I think Denis’ means in that Dune: Messiah “ends” Paul’s arc in the sense that Paul is no longer the protagonist after Messiah. Though he’s still in the story,he’s no longer our point of view character

I completely agree with you on taking the time to get the story right. The changes Denis made to Dune itself (timeline, Chani's arc, Alia's presentment, etc.) certainly don't preclude him from coming up with a fantastic script for Dune Messiah that respects the source material while still being the basis for a great cinematic experience. But striking the necessary balances will be a tricky business, for reasons you've discussed in this and previous videos. It's important that Denis not rush the process, and I don't think he will allow the studio execs to push him any faster than he's willing to go.

YES! Villeneuve needs to take his time and get Dune Messiah right! He earned a TON of goodwill from fans by how well he handled the first two movies. The shame would be to rush it for artificial deadlines (or money) and produce a sub-par show. Longtime Dune fans, and new ones that have enjoyed his Dune adaptations, will be delighted to buy tickets whenever it comes out in theaters.

I dont have a doubt on Denis vision of the Dune Universe. Because not only did he succeed with the 1st one he succeeded again with part 2 and was even used as reference source for the dune game thats in development and even the Dune Show is using the vision of dune he created in their show. Denis Paved Dune for WB, however this where it can ultimately fail. Just like how disney is fumbling the title of Star war, WB has that chance to screw it up too once Denis walks away and they wish to continue the story of Dune. Unlike SW tho they do have a beginning, middle and end. Its just can they find a visionary if not as conparably or greater than Denis to carry Dune forward if WB chooses this route.

I waited and bought both movies at the same time because I was so sure I would like it. It turned out that I didn’t care what happened to the characters. If you wanted a complete book to screen, you’d have to go the game of thrones route. But as for the movies, I’m waiting to see how Denis concludes it. Chani was fine for the most part, and I thought having her be the cynical voice Paul and Jessica had in the books worked. But I’m curious to see what they do with her, cause she still has to be mother to Leto and Ghanima. But I think they’re gonna make it part of Paul’s vision, knowing that he can’t be with her because he would lose her would make their final moments all the more tragic since they had very little time together. As for Margot. I love that they had her, but I wish we also count Fenring as well. They said Lady Margot was the emperor’s childhood friend, yet we don’t see her interact with him. I would’ve loved to see the Fenring’s talk about Feyd in their secret language while watching him. Though I’m hoping that messiah is gonna have Alia fight Feyd and Margot’s daughter.

There was another recent interview - and unfortunately I can't recall the source or event - where he was asked about the more 'exotic' aspects of Dune Messiah - and will they feature in his film. And this, for me, was a question that was on my mind - does Villeneuve somehow simplify Messiah to end his run with the films, or does he remain true to the book and open up the potential for future exploration of the Dune universe. Surprisingly, he seemed to favour the latter - he would be keeping the more colourful characters and aspects of Dune Messiah intact, giving other directors more to leverage in possible future adaptations of later books (or the broader Dune universe).

  • @loganastrup6870

I think Messiah will begin with Paul basically almost all alone. He'll have Alia and Stilgar on his side but he'll be in a loveless marriage with Irulan and he won't even have Chani supporting him. The movie will begin with Chani against Paul. This will emphasize the tragedy of who Paul has become. At some point though Chani will reconcile with Paul. As Paul says "She'll come to understand. I have seen it." How though? I dont know thats for Denis to figure out. But I trust him to tell a great compelling story that will obviously have changes from the book but will still honor the core ideas and themes of Messiah. I think hes done that so far with Dune.

How? I really don’t think it’s hard. She loves him passionately and he loves her. She had an absolutely normal reaction to Paul‘s decision to marry Irulan, but it was a first emotional reaction. Once she looks at it with a bit of distance and gets convinced that Paul will never touch Irulan, why would she not come around (though like in the books it remains an issue for years).
If anything, her reaction in the book makes little sense by modern standards.

      @MongooseTales 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

I'm no great storyteller like Denis, but it seems to me that Act 1 of the movie could consist of the events of the Holy War and Chani reconciling with Paul as it becomes clear to her that (1) his marriage to Irulan is in name only, (2) he is fully entrusting the conduct of the war to Stilgar and the Fedaykin (as illustrated in one or two big set piece battles), and (3) he is channeling the spoils of the war to Arrakis to benefit the Fremen people rather than to Caladan (where Jessica and Gurney have relocated) to enrich and rebuild House Atreides. That would set the stage for Act 2 which would begin with the introduction of the plot against Paul described in Dune Messiah.

It is therefore essential that if the current cast is to be used then time needs to pass in the real world as well.
The 3rd book in the original series "Children of Dune" carries on a further 9 years later.
3 other books were originally published by Frank Herbert making a total of 6 books:
"God Emperor of Dune" (1981): This book represents the most significant time jump in the series, occurring about 3,500 years after "Children of Dune." It follows the rule of Leto II Atreides, who has transformed into the God Emperor.
"Heretics of Dune" (1984): The narrative of "Heretics of Dune" happens approximately 1,500 years after "God Emperor of Dune," introducing a significantly changed universe in the wake of Leto II's long reign.
"Chapterhouse: Dune" (1985): The last book written by Frank Herbert, "Chapterhouse: Dune," picks up shortly after the events of "Heretics of Dune," with no major time jump between these two books.
Dune 7 was the working title for Frank Herbert's seventh Dune novel, which was to be the concluding chapter of the entire Dune series. He had hinted that he was planning to end the series; however, the work was never completed because of his untimely death in February 1986.
AND of course family members and others have written their own books.

Dune Part one and two make my imagination just run wild. I think there will be more movies after the third, because there's now a hunger for more Dune, wich will never be sated, only slowly fade when less visionary directors will make their adaptations of later books. To make God-Emperor of Dune, where to me, there was some pay-off to everything before, as true cinema would be hard, we should be honest about that. It would need to be planned together with Children of Dune and it would need to be done very creativelly, as to not weird out the people who do not yet know of Leto II final form. Maybe Leto II would narrate for 2/3 of the movie and only in the last third will he be fully revealed. Or something like that. I don't know if DV will still have the drive to do it himself, if he does everything before that. Maybe he'll come back 20 years later to finish his career with a last hooray.

I think the revised version of Chani was a great idea, because it's clear to her that he is no longer the boy/man he was, and she can see his changing into a power hungry man, not the boy she fell in love with. It could even be possible that she has the children-since she is already pregnant-at a sietch without him knowing that he even HAS children, and when the film begins, he will meet them for the first time. I don't think that under these conditions their love will be quite the same, and very different from the books. How she is reconciled with the new Muad-dib, remains to be seen.

I've wondered if one reason he doesn't talk about CoD as part of Paul's arc is also because saying that it is part of his arc is a huge story spoiler. For a movie that would still at best be years away (speaking hypothetically of course), if I were directing and enthused about doing CoD, I'm not sure I'd be broadcasting repeatedly how Paul is also in CoD when the book does not confirm his survival until several hundred pages in.

He’s probably gonna take some of the Jihad scenes from the expanded book Paul of Dune to hopefully show some of the jihad as that’s where I think the action will be, the rest of it will be a lot of political intrigue with lots of dialogue which I’m 1000% here for.

Yep. The Holy War and Paul's reconciliation with Chani could be the focus of Act 1 of the movie and satisfy the audience's expectation for some spectacle. The events of Dune Messiah could be introduced in Act 2 (which would start with the formulation of the plot against Paul) and resolved in Act 3. Dune Messiah is a short novel and I don't think its story really requires more than two-thirds of the movie's run time.

Alia could still be possessed by the baron but in the story it was so so much sweeter because she is the one who killed him the first time (as a toddler- bad ass) and then she got to kill his ass again later after possession. IDK how he comes back from the changes he has made in regards to getting the same feeling the story gave us, there was so much room IMO for him to change or tweek things and the things he decided to actually change were really odd choices. Will he extend the time line between end of Dune and Messiah, yes I dont think he has any other choice but to do so if he wants any chance at saving the few things FH actually wrote into the book that were solid truths.

Or Denis can just change the setting for Dune Messiah from 12 years after the events of Dune to 16 years after. It's not going to make a difference for 98% of the audience, and I say that as a huge Dune fan who first read Herbert's books 50 years ago. The trickier thing will be to age up Paul, Chani, and Irulan in a convincing way. Make-up can do amazing things but when it's used to attempt to add years to a young actor's face the result often doesn't come across as realistic.

Considering the end of the second part, I see no reason for a time jump. The holy war has started, Denis will have to show a battle with some ruling family, maybe House Richese or House Vernius. Meanwhile, as the war is going on, he can outline a conspiracy by The Bene Gesserit, the Spacing Guild, and the Tleilaxu. Also, the blue scarf that Chani wore may be an anticipation of her pregnancy (I know Villeneuve changed the meaning, in the book it indicated motherhood and marriage, in the movie it was sign of falling in love), which initiates a reaction from Irulan trying to prevent the birth of children. The only thing we will be deprived of is Alia and Duncan's flirtation. If Denis says that Alia is aging rapidly, just so that Anya can be part of the film, that would be another abomination, completely silly, at least for me. Anya will voice the infant Alia and can appear in dreams. This will cause difficulties in future screen adaptations, primarily because Alia and the twins will be the same age, but I don't think it concerns Denis too much.
If he is really going for a 12 year time jump, how will he portray the war and the mending of relations with Chani? In flashback? And Alia won't grow up enough to do the events of the book anyway.

I think Denis Villeneuve wants to move on from a creativity standpoint. He’s devoted years to the Dune project and it’s likely time to do other things. It’s so difficult to make entertaining cinema from intrenched source material that has so many devotees. One is always in danger of either adhering slavishly to the source and making o boring film or straying too far and alienating the fans of the book series. He’s masterfully threaded that needle to this point and he’d like to finish it off with a strong finale. I can see him doing something smaller and more contemporary after he finishes with Dune.

I am not excited for this to continue. Nothing in DV's Dune makes it a faithful adaptation, it is instead a fanfic film based loosely on the book. The only characters that stay true to their book counterparts are Duke Leto, Barron Harkonen, Yui, and Duncan. All key events and character beats have been altered for changes the director thinks make the story more sensible. In fact, these changes only highlight how far from the mark these writers are from understanding the source material and being able to give fans of the books a true and faithful adaptation without injecting BS politics into a story that already has its own issues and topics to tackle.
DV's Dune is as faithful to the books as Rings of Power and the Wheel of Time; by that I mean it is not at all.
