  • This video shows how to set the stereo outputs of the SSL Big Six in both Logic Pro X as well as Mac OS X for use with not only recording/summing but also using the Big Six for computer audio, respectively. We also go over some things to consider when summing with the Big Six in Logic Pro.

    Hiya, this may turn out to have some issues, but I think I have solved the output 1+2 problem by doing a custom audio setup through MacOS…and have put another interface (actually 3) ahead of the Big Six…just need to mark the Big Six channels with their new channel designations. It’s not difficult. It works seamlessly and because I have three Focusrite synced interfaces ahead of the Big Six I have 40 channels of effective I/O. And many options for mixdown through bussing e.g. can use Sum IP to Main Buss from the outputs from the other interfaces.

    To free up outputs 1-2 in logic you have to create an aggregate device in audio/midi settings. Use the Mac internal ins and outs as first device and select big six six as second device which will offset the big six usb input 1-2 to 2-3 in logic.

    The last tip was most usefull for me. It was annoying when I setup channels 15-16 to output in Logic, and then I had to switch to channels 1-2 to listen to TH-cam or Spotify.

    Thanks very much. Have purchased a Big Six but in between studio moves so not implemented it yet. I mainly use Logic so this is a very useful heads-up. Have subscribed. Best.

      Glad to help! And thank you! Yeah feel free to message me on socials or comment back if you have any issues using it with Logic.

      @@Ponchy have you tried checking the “mirroring” button so that you have outputs coming out 15/16 and because mirroring selected, also 1/2…? I have no idea if this works but is it maybe a potential work around?

      @@learningtodive This is indeed the only fix for this issue. This issue is purely a logic one where the outputs 1 & 2 are coded into to be locked to the master outputs.

    I think it's a Logic issue, not a Big Six one.
    "It's worth noting that a quirk of Logic Pro is that the 'Stereo Output'
    routing is 'attached' to Logic's outputs 1 and 2. This can be changed
    in Logic's PREFERENCES/AUDIO/IO ASSIGNMENTS menu, however
    changing the default stereo output (for example to 15/16), doesn't
    release outputs 1 & 2 to be discretely routed from the DAW paths."

    • @Ponchy
      @Ponchy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. Thanks for bringing this up. I talk about this a bit more in my summing video but yeah it makes more sense to set the stereo output to 15/16 for tracking.

    • @peterbigblock
      @peterbigblock ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's correct, it's a Logic issue. No matter what settings you enter, Logic will ONLY allow outputs 1 & 2 to be main stereo outs. So when you redirect your main Logic output to 15 & 16, outputs 1 & 2 basically become dead. Nothing can actually be routed to them other than Logic's stereo out. It makes absolutely no sense, but that's how the Logic programmers decided to do things.

      @@peterbigblock According to the SSL ref manual there's a workaround if you create a new audio device. But I haven't been able to figure it out yet.

    I discovered that if you use the program Loopback from Rogue Amoeba, you can create a more custom layout of the channel routing, where Outputs 1-2 of the virtual device are routed to Channels 15-16 on the BiG SiX, and channels 17-18 are routed into channels 1-2. 15-16 remain routed to 15-16 as normal.
    You can set this up by adding a new virtual device, then:
    1. Click the + button next to Output Channels 8 times, so it creates 8 extra stereo pairs (so it adds up to 17 & 18)
    2. In the Monitor section, add the Big SiX
    3. Delete the routing from the Output 1-2 into BiG SiX 1-2
    4. Add a routing from Output 1-2 into BiG Six 15-16
    5. Add a routing from Output 17-18 into BiG SiX 1-2
    I wish Audio MIDI Setup could do routing like this!

      Yes!! Thank you for bringing this up. I actually use Loopback for recording videos especially when I’m trying to juggle DAW audio, Big Six audio and camera or mic audio so it’s super helpful for that. I only didn’t mention it in my video because of the cost to buy it and wanted to offer free solutions first but I totally agree that Loopback is a great workaround. I also wish Audio MIDI Setup could do that stuff haha.

    does having output on 1/2 and using 1/2 for summing affect audio at all? Seems like it would have to

    Anyone sort out a way to use the Big Six for podcasting? Meaning, you have Logic recording you, on a mic, from the Big Six input one, then someone remote, like in Zoom or Google Meet, on ....? How to capture that remote audio is driving me crazy. The Rodecaster has a feature that does this. Which, I know the Big Six isn't really built for podcasting. But there's got to be a way.

      You can record the computer audio by setting up a stereo input bus in your DAW linked to channel 15/16 and then engaging the relevant EXT 2 button master section (press the EXT 2 button above the main fader). This essentially re-routes the main outputs back into the computer. Input level is dependent on your master fader level.

      I would also like an answer to this question. I am looking at purchasing a Big Six and one thing I wanted to know first is how the interface treats Zoom Outputs. Zoom in particular appears to always default to USB 1&2 regardless of the outputs on the Mac being assigned to any other outputs. This is on a StudioLive 32SC digital console. After chatting with Presonus Support they stated it was a quick of Zoom. I wonder if this is the same case for the Big Six...
