In this video we have a look in to what could have caused the huge backfiring in the factory eGas FG Ute. Also give the car a general check over before sending it off for it roadworthy.

I know I'm a bit late to the comments section but I thought it's worth sharing so others may benefit.
Mine was doing the exact same thing. Exact!
Backfire at start up, then wierd mis-timing/ compression behaviour just like yours sounded. Eventually starts, then run rough as guts(At one point the air filter box exploded) Eventually it sorts itself out then runs fine
The fault was always intermittent and only on cold start up. After weeks of tinkering and head scratching to no avail- the starter motor suddenly shat itself. After replacing it the fault went away. I did an autopsy on the starter and it pretty much failed due to lack of grease. Bit ordinary for a ten year old car but I did buy second hand from a dodgy dealer so the starter probably had a previous life in a taxi.
2 years later the fault returned. Same again- intermittent and on cold start up. This time it was the battery.
In summary its an electrical fault. For whatever reason if the voltage gets too low at start up the system aborts resulting in a backfire, then the ecu has a hissy fit due to power loss and tries to recalibrate itself.
Your issue could even be as simple as a dodgy negative battery terminal. Nothing to do with the gas leak- well done on picking that up btw.

Hi had same problem with bf falcon with dedicated gas,backfiring on start up then a pain to get going.Eventually this got worse.start up when cold was sometimes okay but once warm it would be slow to turn over and sometimes needed a jumper.the starter motor solenoid was on its way out replaced with new starter motor and runs good again,my guess is the huge current draw affected other parts of the electrical system and the slow turnover speed wouldnt help,but before swapping starters do the basics and check battery and alternator
Air cleaner boxes are getting rare to find as lpg backfire and breaks the plastic where springs go. There is a idle jet & main jet that can foul. Check the 2 drain plugs under converter for water leak in the gas side of converter. Rebuild kits are $130 from a business called LPG shop in kipperring. Vialle, sprint gas and Impco kits are available. Oh, the main jet under the lock comes out with a spark plug cap with a long self tapping wood screw.

That's why it runs like it's misfiring after a backfire. Thanks for the information. Lucky the piston doesn't hit the valve on the way up.
My au Falcon dual fuel has lost compression it was also back firing when I was swapping it to and from gas. I've checked all the components like setting TDC but it's all looking fine, I might add that I've hit a pot hole just before it stopped running could I have lost a sensor or something or
i have also found to avoid a backfire after you turn the key to on fully press the accelerator then let off ( which primes the intake ports with gas) then start and hold the key in the start position until you hear the motor running then let key go. i have not had one backfire in a long time since doing this start procedure
on my old ef falcon if it backfired and started running rough it was a hose off a black thingy on the passenger side firewall about the size of a 20 pack of smokes , i would just refit the hose and it would work fine ( assuming it didn't crack all the plastic intake )
Check that the spark plugs are seated properly, you can do that by removing the plugs and check that the washer has been crushed, if not it is not going in all the way. If the business end of the plug is not in the combustion chamber it will cause a misfire especially on start-up. There are plenty of vids out there on cleaning out the spark plug threads.
get a metal PCV to prevent backfire, put a kit thru the converter and tank inspection $350.
This always used to happen with my dedicated gas BF Futura when it had a faulty stepper motor, it would backfire when struggling to start and sounded EXACTY what yours just did. I've always wondered why it sounded like that when cranking over after backfiring. I would get it started and it would run rough as guts until I'd given it a decent boot in drive, as soon as the engine reached a certain RPM threshold (around 3500 to 4000RPM or above) it would then come good and run perfectly as if nothing had happened, like some above have said; maybe something like a valve getting stuck? Never found the cause..
My 2008 FG does exactly the same thing. 230,000klms on the odo.
It does crank slow when it is cold. On the first start up fail it sometimes backfires which bring the engine to an abrupt stop with a loud bang and shakes the whole car. Then I wait about 15 seconds and attempt starting the motor again... my car makes exactly the same sound, 3 quick turns followed by 1 slow turn sound = 1 cycle. After about 4 cycles the speed of cranking increases slightly and the pitch increases (higher) just like in the video. My car always starts on this second start up attempt, and runs very rough for about 2 minutes before smoothing out.
Converter / vaporizer just replaced with Genuine ford part = $1700 + labour
Spark plugs and air filter done at 212,000klms
Might try the 680CCA battery replacement next. (not sure how old the current battery is, I have owned the car for 2 years)

only cost me $220 from metrotune to have my gas tank inspected last year , that was in a vy wagon though with a single tank , If those 2 tanks on the ute are easily accessible i doubt it will cost you much more than that :)
I think it gets flooded from the initial false start, and that's why it struggles to start for a while afterwards.

Ive only had this problem once or twice, BF with Vialle converter. I found not trying to start the thing instantly stopped it from happening, give it time to do whatever, then start. Never happens now.
I had the same issue with my vl calais. I washed the engine it was running fine for a day then all of a sudden it felt and sounded like I was on 5 cylinders it would drive or idle for a little but once I accelerated it would back fire then stall then I’d try restarting the car and it wouldn’t fire up I had to wait for 5 mins to actually start the car then it would repeat the same symptoms. Issue was water got the spark plugs after a few days the car went back to normal.
This could be the money shot. Im going to take the plug/coil cover off when it gets back from the gas inspection and check for moisture. It ran rough when we first drove it, but the back fires only started after the wash......
I also had my ignition barrel done as it stopped, had to get the gas certified which was 1.1k and the back shocks ended up going. Now I need to get the thermostat done and the diff bushes done. I've spent more than its worth on it..
Yr not alone mate I spent over 3grand on my bf ute anyhow it's worth doing.
@@iwillnotcomply2002 total cost with buying the vehicle was 13k and I still need to do my diff bushes lol after that the whole cars essentially new again.

do yaself a favor if it is a wagon or ute put boss suspension airbags in the rear they work awesome cost $500 to buy a setup
Falcons and gas. Ignition system needs to be in top notch condition. Coils, a bad coil will cause backfires and shitty hesitant power. Also if it backfires. Check the pcv towards the back or the rocker cover. Will blow the bottom out of it, and cause poor idle.
Just change the plugs and coils. Car still runing rough. only works when running the car on high revs. I guess I'll have another shot at it tomorrow.

@@aaronharris8245 old battery was the issue. The previous owner never had any issues as he only drove 7 KMs to work every day for the last 6 years.

Bro when my bf cut out on a hill. Then went again like no probs. I smeld gas. But had a gas mechanic look over it couldnt find a fault. But there is. New coils plugs runs great. Then just stopped on a hill. Dangerous. Will sort it go to gas specialist. Thanks
Hey mate had this problem with my FG EGas. Battery issue. Chuck in a new one with higher Cold Cranking Amps (CCA). Kicks it over way faster when its cold and fires up without backfiring. I got a 680 CCA battery.
LPG is more difficult to ignite and with these dedicated gas engines being a higher compression they just need a bit more power to turn over on a cold start. Guarantee you this is your problem mine was exactly the same.
What amp or cranking battery did you get mate

hi i just bought an fg egas the lady i bought it off fitted a 480 cca amp battery in it would that be to small?
Mine started backfiring and wouldn't run properly, turned out to be the coils.
I got a el falcon xr6. Straight piped.same thing
does this non-greentop Egas motor come with the stronger rods compared to the NA Barra?

If it was factory dedicated lpg , then yes , it will have the turbo rods . I do know in bf3 wagons for sure that not all dedicated gas engines were fitted with green top especially the 2010 ones. If ford didn't have a green top on hand , they would put the standard rocker cover on.
Its not genuine ford lpg , they used viable converters exclusively.
Green tops have the turbo conrods. The pistons look similar, bit they are fixed and not the same.

Yeah it was a pin missing in the right rear. Just made one up.

When did it have a new set of spark plugs ignition is critical with lpg engines
And coils how old are they ?
Also those gas converters are designed to be drained of old gas residue whilst hot every 40000klms or so
Unfortunately there is no history on the plugs and coils. I didn't want to buy them unless they are needed, but its something else to definitely keep in mind.

You will find that the intake manifold gasket is broken and leaking. They become brittle and blow out quickly.
That could not be any easier to fix. Gas tape or LPG rated sealant. The tank test should be about $400, or $200 if you take it out. It must be taken out for a proper inspection.
Mine had a cracked gas converter. Now I have a broken thermostat lol. Won't regulate the water to gas so the converter now freezes over after 5 minutes of running
Now the water pump needs doing, and heater core.
Don’t forget the transmission cooler if it has one.
Need to clean the idle jet use a spark plug end that unscrews.
If you happened to be in Melbourne Sullys LPG cylinder testing does mobile tank testing for $150 per tank my ute has two tanks I got charged $300 which is good price

The gas leak you're smelling is most likely the air filter rubber seal blown out from the backfire.
The overflow gas goes to the air intake box... Without the seal, it'll stink big time.
I'm sure you had the little leak, but most the gas will be coming from the air intake
I had the same problem. Turns out the starter motor was pulling too much current from the battery. New starter motor plus new battery, problem solved.

Hey Deon, unfortunately the ute has been set aside temporarily. The fuel prices falling through the floor and lockdown has sort of reduced the urgency on getting it ready for sale. However, we did get the leaks all fixed and the gas cert done. We did get a chance to film a more traditional episode on the ute which will be live at 5pm this afternoon. There will be a full update on it sometime next week, after sitting for a few weeks, the hard start is back with vengeance.

I have same problem. I changed all coils, sparg plags and new battry,,,,, & new convertor and still have cold start then BOOM 💥

Check pcv valve after backfire they blow them to peices.
Agreed, I always replace them with metal ones.
Glad I did as such to the bf2 I picked up in 2018, as the starter was dying and it would backfire frequently.
What made matters worse is that some genius clamped the hose to the PCV valve, which in turn prevented the hose from blowing off at the valve, and forced it to blow off under the throttle body. After removing the clamp it could blow clear at the valve, I was able to fix it again in about 5 seconds, and I didn't have to worry about burning the shit out of my arm anymore if the engine was hot.
Not an issue for me now though as the starter crapped out and was replaced about 5 months back and it hasn't backfired since then 👍

It was the gas leak and converter had a seal gone.
@@ZeroTo60Tube ahh, thanks for the reply. I still have my issue but I replaced my converter about 2 years ago with a Vialle converter. If I fix it I will be sure to reply with the fix here.

That’s a really poor gas converter most fg and ba bf came out with vallie gas converters your one looks aftermarket
It is definitely after market gas because the factory dedicated E-Gas engines have a green valve cover

Late reply but for info , bayford or jefferson ford on ebay , metal type $10 & replace the grommet if its hard or perished also available genuine about $25 ( they are much better than the aftermarket ones & easier to get off without dropping bits into the engine when it comes time to replace )

the back fire will be plugs and or coils 100%. Fix the gas leak yourself it's far too easy. It's the same as putting a 9kg bottle on your bbq, and you wouldn't pay someone to do that for you. Not being a smart ass, just trying to save you some $$. When you undo it a small amount of gas in the lines will obviously come out, but the tanks have shutoff valves on them so no extra gas will be lost from the tanks. There are also manual over-ride taps on the tanks (next to the shutoff valve) that you can also close for peace of mind while fixing the leak.

LPG doesn't get dirty oil. Could be 8k old oil
it can become contaminated when the car backfires lgp through the pcv. the oil turns to jelly and floats. Also I will guess the backfire was from water on the sparkplugs, from the pressure wash.
Obviously duel fuel system.. wrong converter.
Replace inlet manifold.
Pretty expensive?

Had quitw a few LPG vehicles, yes electricals need to be spot on for LPG,also take a close at the air box, as a LPG backfire can blow it apart may not be obvious from the top, makes them run like shit.
This one does have the springs on it, but i should definitely open it up and check it properly. Thanks for the tip. Do you know what part of the electronics need to be spot on? Are there any adjustments?
On the fords it won’t matter bout the airbox it’s the map sensor that gets damaged plus other certain parts that you wouldn’t think about
@@anthonywhelan8373 It does matter if the airbox does blow open as messes with the reading at the of air quantity at the map sensor, LPG is very sensitive to that and any ignition problems leads, coils plugs ect, also coolant levels, all these are barely noticed when running on petrol.
Hi Paul don’t take this the wrong way but mechanic by trade lpg vechiles for the last 25 years including a current 500hp vl turbo that I built and the map sensor stands for manifold absolute pressure meaning it only reads the amount of air that goes into the manifold and adjusts the mixtures by way the of sending signal voltages to the ecu so in my experience a damaged airbox won’t affect a map sensor in any given way otherwise fitting a highflow air filter would make a car run shit as it would be passing more air than a stock air filter or taking the airbox off a car starting it would do the same you may be mistaken for an airflow sensor or maf sensor that is located near the airbox as this gets damaged when a backfire occurs that is big enough to destroy an air box

well its not too bad considering it has to be removed then pressure tested. In case you are from the states GAS as in LPG.
