Overheating has nothing to do with the condition of the hull, oil level etc. The overheat is directly caused by a problem with the raw water side of the engine. First I would check the intake, remove the intake hose to check for an obstruction & raw water flow. Then check the condition of the plastic parts in the raw water strainer, hoses etc. next would be to check the condition of the raw water pump. In the pump check the impeller, depending how long it’s been since the last impeller replacement now would be the time for that. Next check and or replace the cam in the pump, rear wear plate & cover plate depending on the wear found. Next open up the raw water side of the heat exchanger and inspect the cooling passages inside. Also check to see if there is an oil cooler before the heat exchanger. If so check all cooling passages in this cooler. You need to put your detective hat on. Some where in the raw water cooling system there is either an obstruction or a very worn pump. There could also be an air leak in the items before the pump. If there was an air leak you would most likely see this because it would be filling the bilge with salt water. Good luck, let the viewers know what was causing the over heat.
Get yourselves either an infrared thermometer or (much better) a thermal camera attachment for your phone or tablet. And a "flopper-stopper" or two (google it, they're incredibly easy to make) for rolly anchorages. Sometimes a small sail (sailboard size) hanked onto a backstay and sheeted forward at an angle is enough to control how she takes the wind & waves.
A few things about Vieques which wife and I visited in the 1970's. Cayo Real, the island you snorkeled near was where part of the movie "Lord of the Flies" was filmed in 1961, In the 70's there was still a barn near shore in Esperanza that was used for film developing and storage and still had a "Lord of the Flies" sign on it. The horses you see are Paso Fino -decendents of those brought from Spain. Have a fine gait. When we were there young boys would hold a carrot in the center of a halter loop. When the horse went for the carrot, the halter went over the horse's head, boy jumped on the back and rode the horse to his destination and jumped off with the halter. Outside of Esperanza about 1/2 mile there used to be a hacienda called Casa Frances. Built around 1900 by wealthy European man, who then brought his wife there. She hated it and left shortly after arrival. It was a 2 story center atrium Inn with a swimming pool when we stayed in the 70's and owned by a Bostonian named Greenblatt. It burned down around 1995-2000 and only the foundation is still there. In the 70's, the eastern end of the island was target practice area for US Navy ships and the west end was an ammunition storage facility. We witnessed the target practice while swimming at Red Beach. Swam in the BioBay when we were there and sounds like it is still spectacular.
All your comments are spot on. My family is from Vieques. We have quite the family history of the Benitez family......I just spent 15 minutes daydreaming about Vieques in between words. I know live in Portland, OR ....yes almost the other side of the world. I’m preparing to change my life: selling off EVERYTHING and now actively looking at sailboats between 38 to 42 to live on board and travel back to the Caribbean.
Great video. Loved Khiara's adventures ashore looking for the showers, the sideways palm tree and the reaction to the horses running about town. I hope Millie will stop giving you so many issues so you can get back to sailing and having more fun.
Always look forward to your vids. When you look back the trials and trivails wills be nothing compared to the the memories of amazing people and places. Cheers and if not happy sailing at least funny as shit. You two are 👍
Again, welcome to Puerto Rico. Vieques is a gorgeous Island. Lived there from Feb 2017- Jul 2017. There is petról not far from Esperanza. I have some friends still there and I’m sure they will be glad to help. Don’t know if you left yet but please let me know if there is anything I can help with! Cheers and enjoy guys!
Vieques suffered a lot of devastation due to Hurricane Maria and what is normally a quiet town must be now a "dead" town. Esperanza is the second largest settlement in the island and it used to be populated with bars and restaurants. I remember that the bottom is kind of rocky and not a good anchoring hold. One time I was having a beer on shore and my brother pointed out a sailboat going in reverse and asked: Isn't that your boat? Took a lot of swimming to get back on board and start the engine. Great video guys.
brokerhc thanks for your comment and sorry for the late reply! Hopefully other like us with patron this beautiful little place and get it up to what it was. When were you here?! How far did you have to swim? Tell us your story!!? Khiara
I love it, except the part when you had problems with the engine again. Love your adventurous spirit. That walkway on Vieques looks like a broken down dock area, I don't think I could have walked it!!!
Youve not been watching long enough buddy 😉😉 1500 miles in less than 6 months 🍻 Also, all projects are on the back burner until were out of the hurricanr belt.
Seen all your uploads and perception is you motor about 75% of the time. I'm not the only one commenting on this. Good luck with everything. Hope it all works out for you.
sailors back centuries ago had a rough go of it, no doubt about that...but at least they didn't have bloody infernal combustion engines to piss them off. anyhoo....another nice episode.hope you liked the lobster. thankyou.
And they had a copper bottom they said didn’t work well, scrubbing the shit out of it every couple weeks. They also wouldn’t have been able to do anywhere near the amount of motoring these guys have done because their batteries would have died.
Diesels can be tricky to diagnose but once you understand that engine you will know when it is about to act up by the way it sounds, smells, and vibrates. Get a manual for that model or a general marine mechanic's how-to and it will server you for all the days you are on the water.
Don’t know how late this comment could be, but watching the issues you have had with the engine, may I suggest you plan to “polish your fuel”: you have algae and condensate water in your fuel. If you don’t have it now, you will eventually. Check fuel polishing in your engine manuals. I think it will prove useful.
Possibly heat exchanger could use Muriatic acid wash. Not an expert myself but Atticus solved their overheating problem this way in the last or second to last season 2 episode. Noticed someone also suggested Barnacle Buster instead of the acid as less caustic. Just something to keep in mind.
Agreed, check the strainer, the impeller and if no impeller parts found in the heat exchanger do a flush. Now as a lover of our oceans, and one of the owners of the company that makes Barnacle Buster, please do not use muriatic acid to flush any sea water cooling systems on your boats...I'd rather you guys even use our competitors product over muriatic acid as it's not very safe to use and when misused, it can cause a lot of damage. Thanks for the mention and safe travels
Discovered your channel today its been great to watch so far working my way through each video, if you use premier theres a trick most people dont no, when you come to render set the bit rate to 7mb and the target bitrate to 29.7 mb instead of creating a file size of 1 gig it reduces the file down to 180 mb which should upload files in no time, to see bio luminescent in dark up the iso level up to 5700 if possible or 3700 it should bring up light level in dark
Video uploads , in desperation you can put them on a thumb drive and snail mail it to someone who can post it on the web . Please double nut that drive shaft !
Here are other anchoring tips you may find helpful. The bridle technique for the 'roller coaster' problem is included: www.pbo.co.uk/seamanship/anchoring-6-tips-for-tricky-situations-21085
Yes, low oil WILL cause many engines to overheat/run hot, because oil removes a lot of heat from the engine, too. Yes, check coolant and thermostats..HAH! I was about to Suggest that you do that on the anchor chain, it's called a Spring, and in the days of Sail they used the method to adjust Windage when doing Gunfire Operations against Shore positions. Damn. I was hoping to have a Helpful Idea, but Alas, I was Too Slow....Somebody ELSE reads C.S. Forester, apparently.. Those lobster made me HUNGRY! Good thing I'm not There, you all would have to share the Second one, I'D eat one without ANY help, MMMMMMmmmmmm! Okay, A Point here: You named her Millennial Falcon, but you're Surprised and Annoyed when she has a lot of small Breakdowns? Come ON! Adam, where's your Inner Han Solo? The reason the Millennium Falcon broke down all the time was the SAME as why Millie is doing it. The Previous Owners Ran the Dogshit out of her, and didn't bother to Maintain her Properly. Therefore, Like Han, you're going to have Unforeseen Problems for awhile with OTHER people's mistakes or negligence, as well as the few things YOU Break. Cheer Up, Khiera is MUCH Better-Looking than Chewie, and damn near as Handy to Have Around. Give her a year and she'll be Handier. And so will you. Oh, also, in an Emergency, you CAN run your engine WITHOUT a Thermostat to get somewhere to get a new one. And, Straight Water has a lower Boiling Point than Antifreeze/Coolant, so that Alone can cause Running Hot. Add a couple thermostats to your spares, and gaskets/O-rings for them, they last for years, usually, but sometimes you get a Lemon from the store. Or the gaskets/O-rings go Bad and Leak... Let me know when you have a Mechanical problem, I'll help out all I can. Not so Good with Electrical, I can't get the Shorts out of my ass, lol...
Greetings. Thermostats are not needed to run an engine, the engine will come up to temperature slower. That’s not a bag thing running it in the Caribbean. If you were running it in the Arctic that may cause a problem. Try sailing more!
*You should look into “The Rocker Stopper” (just google that). It’s supposed to helpful from what I’ve heard. It stabilizes your boat at anchor.* ⛵️ ⛵️

You need to always check the engine impellars when the engine starts to overheat. And remove any broken blades.

Super fun episode this week....getting better and better... best wishes and ...............Cheers .
David Chandley thanks mate for always tuning in and commenting. We really appreciate it :). Adam.
Great to see you moving again and catching fish! Would love to be there eating with you two incredible people. Love and safe seafaring xxx
And more palm tree photo shoot!!! Love it. Seeing y’all In Action.
Getting better and better..!
loved it!
Having a friend to give you some diesel help must be very comforting. Good video.
Very nice video! GOD bless you guys. JC
Fantastic - love your videos
Loved it guys. Keep them coming.
Cheers

Love the channel, just keeps getting better.
Great episode! Wish we could have seen the bioluminescence but I am glad you all got to enjoy it! Can’t wait for the next episode.
My god! Khiara is so beautyful

Good vid ya'll, hope you get your engine troubles sorted out.
Corellian Engineering Corporation (CEC), has lots to answer for. Great video 😀
Always see them motoring and never sailing. Looks like the window project is forever on the back burner. Fair winds and safe travels.

Makes a good argument for going electric, and also CopperCoat bottom covering. Much less buildup and easier cleanup.
"sailing uma" has an electric engine. (from a forklift if i recall)
kudos to them for giving it a go, but it seems less reliable than a diesel.
And they had a copper bottom they said didn’t work well, scrubbing the shit out of it every couple weeks.
They also wouldn’t have been able to do anywhere near the amount of motoring these guys have done because their batteries would have died.
There’s a big difference between CopperCoat and a copper coat antifoul
Taking the thermostat out of a older Holden worked well. I'd be reluctant to do it on a marine motor.
Try using a stern anchor to turn the bow into the swells.
Diesels can be tricky to diagnose but once you understand that engine you will know when it is about to act up by the way it sounds, smells, and vibrates. Get a manual for that model or a general marine mechanic's how-to and it will server you for all the days you are on the water.
Bums on a boat had the worst time with their motor. They finally got it straightened out. Try some of their solutions.
Something with the exhaust.

A stern anchor willl hold boat into waves, which will ease rolling. Lying broadside to an anchor risks dragging.

Did you get a new dinghy around the time of episode 19, or is that the other couples dinghy?

“Mesquite bay, which is famous for its bioluminescence....” I don’t know, the name suggests it’s famous for something else.... lol thanks for sharing.
The horses at night will turn into humans. HE,HE,HE.
Upload at 720p. Will look great and save you time. Sail on!
I was thinking that too, since most of us view them on either our computer or tablets.
You guys need to get a Chow Dog and name him Chewy.
So... did Khiara dive on the anchor? You cut the video before she his the water. No video evidence... mustn't have happened. :P
You only need to boil Lobster 3 min and it is DONE! Barney
That's the way I did it when I lived in the Florida Keys, Steak and Lobster every weekend

Diesel engine filters?!
Good videos ....But don't forget to look at us...we are the camera. You are getting better but may still forget sometimes.
Not much sailing going on.
Are you guys British or Aussies? You called it a BBQ not a Barbie.
Greetings. Thermostats are not needed to run an engine, the engine will come up to temperature slower. That’s not a bag thing running it in the Caribbean. If you were running it in the Arctic that may cause a problem. Try sailing more!
Y'all should trade for a power boat.
Whats up with the facial hair? Jejeje
She's HOT
