Great couple, Great videos, but you are learning what all boaters eventually know. Boat; A hole in the water surrounded by wood, metal or fiberglass into which one pours money. I feel your pain. I lived on a yacht for 7 years and am considering doing it again. That's the definition of insanity. Keep doing the same thing and expecting a different outcome:)
A tarp will come in very handy on rainy and sunny days. Make a tent, lie it flat on the deck, under boat if you hit again to keep water at bay for pump to keep up. You can Work under, keep below cooler when sun is out, keep rain out when more maintenance is needed etc etc. Land or sea a tarp, duck tape, zip ties n fencing wire can get u out of shite. Love your vids

You cannot mix old batteries with new ones. You have to replace them all. The old batteries will drag the new ones down as they die. You have to replace all six
Yep Butyl tape, great stuff. Perfect for that application and others. Some even use it to rebed cleats, not sure I would go that far though. But stanchions, toe and deck rails and plenty of other things sure. Also as others have mentioned, sure hope you did not use silicon on the plexiglass, it is fine with glass but not plexiglass or any acrylic.
You guys are great keep up the good work and I like the way you fight through adversity. We had a similar adventure way before GPS etc in the 70/80s. You bring back memories cheers.
Don't know if you know this but Tayana's and some other boats produced in that era that were built in Taiwan are affectionately known as leaky Teakys. You have a very seaworthy and beautiful boat inside and out but they do tend to have areas prone to leaking. Fortunately you both seem to tackle every problem and challenge with lots of laughter and a great attitude so I'm guessing you will get on top of it. Love your channel! Butyl is 20000% the way to go. I just pulled some hardware off that was 3 years old and the wood underneath looked brand new. It's now properly epoxy saturated and reinstalled.
Back to episode 10 re your wanting idea to lock shaft nut. Behind nut put tin washer, then hammer over flat on nut, then make two cuts in washer ( or before) and bend tab you made into spline. You now have mechanical lock that can’t back off. Good luck.
Butyl tape is fantastic!! It doesn’t set hard or leave a residue like silicone it works awesome above the waterline and I have heard that it can be used below the waterline quite well also. Just a thought about your prop shaft coming loose.i thought I heard you saw that you left the boat in reverse while under sail, if that’s the case that could have been what caused the nut to loosen. It’s a reverse thread because the shaft is primarily run in the forward direction. Running in reverse would loosen the nut while running in forward would tighten or keep tight. Just a thought. Hi Welcome to a shack down cruse. You might want to consider changing all the plates Stainless work hardens if one has let go the rest are suspect. I noted in episode 10 the leeward stays were loose that isn't good for stainless. I know what you are going through I got a boat in Airlie Beach finished it enough to launch it and bring it back to Brisbane. I didn't want my wife to come but I couldn't talk her out of it. Friends talked me into doing a blog on it it's a bit of fun isn't it. Most important stay safe!
Expresso316 thanks for watching mate. 1200 miles later I think we may have overdone the shake down 😉 my prognosis is that the crack emminated from a pitting hole as a result of water intrusion. i'd say it's been in that state for some time. We did replace them anyway just to be safe its nice to have some visibility on the structure now. hopefully thats one issue we won't cross again any time soon. Cheers!

The umbrella was a great idea.... Id have handed the handle of the umbrella through the porthole and ductaped it there. ";-) then you could have stayed a bit more dry...... ok, I probably wouldnt have thought of the umbrella in the first place. :D
Just found your vlog last week so I have so catching up to do. On your windows. Probably too late now, but Butyl Tape yes. Silicone NO. Some silicone it not compatible with plexiglass and will cause it to weaken and craze. Even worse is it gets into the pores of the gelcoat making any new chalking not stick. You have to grind the area out and build it back up. Do some research on what to put around the plexiglass ( a name brand of acrylic ). Dow Corning makes a product and there are others. I do not allow silicone of any type on my boat.
Glad to see Khiara's smashed finger is healing well, I have had a few of those, ripped a nail off and crushed the tip on one, looks like it belongs to E.T., now. (Phone HOME.) Another filled up underneath with blood, had to drill a hole through it to relieve the pressure. This Hurt REAL bad, because the SLIGHTEST touch hurt worse than the Original Smash,lol. But the Relief was MORE than Worth It, because it was free to start Healing, then. The Book by Calder is your Maintenance Manual, as you've figured out,lol. And everyone says NEVER use Silicone caulk on an Ocean Cruiser. Do you all have a Complete set of tools Aboard? Ratchets, sockets, wrenches(spanners, to you Brits and Anzacs), Actually you need TWO, because our Euro-Pandering Industries tried to switch us to Metric System years ago, and now all it means is you have to have TWO Tools sets to Work On ANYTHING, pretty much. Oh, and remember Duct Tape? If you had, you COULD have Taped Up the screw holes in the portlights to keep the rain Out. DUCT TAPE: Uses Limited ONLY By Your Imagination. NEVER Sail, Motor, RV, Fly, Drive, WHATEVER Without it. SERIOUSLY. It's also a damned Fine MEDICAL Tape in an Emergency, for wrapping bandages, improvised Splints, and sealing puncture wounds temporarily on you AND the Dinghy. Good Cheap Bikini Waxing, slings for broken/sprained arms, Google It and Be AMAZED. Love your vids, Cheers.
Make your own chain plates. Download Sketchup. Learn to use it via You Tube, it's a free (for non commercial use) intuitive drawing program. You might need to get the 2015 version if your computer is dated. Get the Sketchup addon that allows you to export dxf files from the online addon warehouse. Draw up your chain plates. Email the dxf files to a steel cutting service. They'll plasma cut them or laser cut them for you. Remember to make sure that any holes you draw have as many sides as the program will allow. The holes in Sketchup are never true holes. They seem to have 24 sides default. The more sides the more "round" the hole will be. The bolts will then pass through easier.

Hmmm I'm not sure your surveyor did a very good job. Seem to me he should have been able to spot quite a few more misstakes that you've found along the way. The engine and prop shaft is one thing, shit happens. But leakages etc should've been found without too much trouble, windows alone are easy but a good surveyor, or even a decent one should have found other places without too much trouble. Glad you're both cheerful anyway and with high spirits! :-) /Rasmus

I'd be careful with your stainless. I'm no metals expert but I've been led to believe that stainless should be left bare of anything, hence all the nice polished stainless you see on boats. It needs oxygen for it to be rust resistant and when oxygen deprived it will rust away just like most metals ( commonly shows up as pitting and cracking in stainless ). This is also why rigging wire will damage around the stanchions first (dirty and oxygen deprived). On many boats plates are polished and not just for aesthetics. Cleaning should be just warm soapy water and no harsh cleaning agents and then a quick polish. The best (and most expensive that you'll ever be able to afford) marine grade stainless is 316 but walking around your local chandlery it can be hard working out exactly what grade they have on the shelf. 316 is the only grade of stainless that isn't magnetic so for the cost of a small magnet you can save yourself a fortune. A highly worked/machined piece may be slightly magnetic. Stainless can be a real B#### because it gives very little warning it's about to fail. You need a magnifying glass to look for hairline cracks and then if you can't polish them out you're in trouble.
Are you kidding! Contact the nimrod who did your survey and ask for your money back. These should have been spotted and changed before purchase. What if all of them were like that? The first hard blow and you would have been dismasted.
@@Josef_R Actually i own 2. Chainplates like that should have been red flag after red flag. Rust busting out of the wire rigging up top should have been found by the surveyer too

The best (and most expensive that you'll ever be able to afford) marine grade stainless is 316 but walking around your local chandlery it can be hard working out exactly what grade they have on the shelf. 316 is the only grade of stainless that isn't magnetic so for the cost of a small magnet you can save yourself a fortune. A highly worked/machined piece may be slightly magnetic. Stainless can be a real B#### because it gives very little warning it's about to fail. You need a magnifying glass to look for hairline cracks and then if you can't polish them out you're in trouble.

and changed before purchase. What if all of them were like that? The first hard blow and you would have been dismasted.

Actually i own 2. Chainplates like that should have been red flag after red flag. Rust busting out of the wire rigging up top should have been found by the surveyer too
