The players get worked over because despite making all that money, they can’t go a year without earning a check. So they aren’t going to hold out. And without holding out, you can’t get the owners to fold.

To be fair in the US we should all have healthcare via a single payer system. Healthcare here is a joke with the insurance companies caring only about maximizing profits. I lost both of my parents to cancer at a young age and their hospital bills and drug prices were insane. If you aren't a multi-millionaire, then you are screwed.

When the NFL players went on strike in 1987 the owners played games with replacement players, and a lot of regular players crossed the picket line, including future Hall of Famers like Joe Montana and Lawrence Taylor. When the baseball players went on strike in 1994 the owners did try using replacement players, but not a single regular player crossed. That is why NFL players have non-guaranteed contracts and a hard salary cap, while MLB players have guaranteed contracts and just a luxury tax.

If they're going to 18 games, they must expand the rosters to 60 and all dress on Sundays. Practice squads should get expanded again as well. But guaranteed contracts are still impossible. However, lifetime health coverage would be doable. The union must negotiate hard during the next CBA. It's worth a strike.

The career of an average player when the NFL first bullied the Union was 2.5 years. Players did not want to lose half their careers and have the other half affected by reduced revenues due to a cancelled season(if it ever get to that point). Don't forget that the NFL structured their media deals so that they get paid regardless if there is football played or not. They also used replacement players. Hence, they can wait the players out. It would take at least a cancelled season to get a fair deal. Also, a lot of players may even go against their union and play with the replacement players.

I'm sorry but the fans have ZERO culpability in the NFLPA's historical inability to negotiate for their best interests. The players have always had a short term view and it's cost them dearly. The '82 strike should've netted them guaranteed contracts and long term health insurance. Every CBA since has been short term improvements. Every year, you've got multiple players complaining about their deals, because of concessions made by the union. The NFLPA has the leverage, and unlike the MLBPA, has refused to lose a season in the short term, for better deals in the long term.

  • @OlcurtyB

Not sure if many of you or even the guys talking understand unions and collective bargaining. It's not about whether they should or should not get lifetime healthcare. It's about if the players prioritize it.
Everything in bargaining is give and take. The players can get it in the next deal they just have to make it a priority over some of the other things they currently enjoy. But good luck getting a 25 year old super athlete to understand that having lifetime healthcare is worth giving up money in your pocket today.

A construction worker needs to pay for his and his job is more dangerous and he has to keep working for double the amount of years a football players have to work. Hence owners have huge disproportionate leverage.
Then you have teams trying to guilt players saying that if they do not take a discount to help the team win, they are selfish lol. They say that the players agreed to the salary cap hence they should consider the cap when asking for a huge contract. You don't get to cite the agreement when you bullied the other party into agreeing to an unfair agreement.
