      Oh I'm so sorry that happened. That's how I have felt about one of my stories. Like people won't like it. But I've heard that if God is pleased then don't worry about who isn't and that fearing People and what they think is dangerous!!!!!!!!! And it's so true and I'm still learning this.

It's nice to know that there are writers out there like me who share my faith and struggles. I struggled with this as well, the best remedy is prayer and dedication. Go to Him each day and say something like "Lord bless the work of my hands, make my work pleasing to you.", praying the Our Father prayer is also beneficial. By surrendering your projects and talents to Him, you put it in His hands to show you what to do.

    As someone who also balances my creative journey with my faith in Jesus, hearing your perspective definitely resonates with me. I appreciate the focus on doing 'good work' as a way of honoring faith, rather than feeling the need to overtly display our faith in our work. I think your characters and themes, even subtle, indirectly speak volumes about Christian values and its true. If we look at the life of Jesus, sure, He made certain that people were being ministered to BUT, He lived life with people, with His disciples, with His family. It's not always about Bible thumping than it is about LIVING the Bible. There is always time though for sharing the gospel. Great video Ana!!

I am very interested in complex characters and grey areas of morality as I think it’s realistic. But I felt bad for this bcs God gave me the creative gift. Hi Ana! I'm not Christian, but I loved hearing you speak on this topic! As a person of faith, I feel like it's so difficult to find other people who try to practice their religion. It gives me so much admiration for a person when they are living life according to their faith, especially as society becomes increasingly critical of it. My religious beliefs give me so much peace in life and all of my writing is inspired by it, but sometimes I worry that others will find me to be too preachy, so it's nice to hear about how you balance that. This was such a refreshing video to see

    I really liked when you said that your faith defines your values and view of the world and that that influences your writing. I couldn't have said it better myself. Characters and theme do a really good job at sharing the good news!

    Thanks for you interesting thoughts! I actually never thought about that topic of being a christian writer even though I am christian. But what I realized is now, that a lot of what I believe is what I write about. My goal is always that people somehow benefit from my stories in a good way. Be it just gifting someone some time in a safe space or passing over encouragement thorugh characters who overcome fears. The outcome can be very individual for every reader of course but it always should be something good in my opinion. So when you talked about trying to do your best as a writer, I thought " yeah I can identify with that too!"

      I love romance where the characters don't kiss. You don't have to center it around that kind of thing in order to make it good. Love isn't about kissing and such, real love is simply caring about another person, and being willing to put their happiness above you're own (but of course, your needs matter too, don't just shove them aside). It's based on respect and kindness. ^v^

    As a Christian writer, I want to share something with you…. The book of Esther does not mention the name of God, yet it would be inaccurate to say that God is not at the center of that story. It’s so evident how God used Esther in that story. Similarly, if your books are not “Christian” books, God can still be the core of the story! I’ll go so far as to say God SHOULD be the center, whether it’s overt or not. Someway and somehow, we need to use our gift for storytelling to point readers to the truth. We do this through theme, character, and conflict. This is our calling as Christian writers.
    I pray over my writing every time I sit down to write. When I walk my dog in the morning, I pray for God to supply ideas for me, to bless my writing, and that it would glorify Him. You mention wanting to improve your prayer life, so I suggest praying to God out loud, whether it be in the car or on walks, or any time you’re alone And tell him about your writing! He’ll love it, I promise. And He WILL use you, Ana.

    • @KewpiKayo
      @KewpiKayo 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yes I agree!! I also have started journaling and talking to God that way recently because most of the time I can’t really articulate what I want to say out loud but I can explain better when I write, so that may also be another way for people to talk and communicate with God too. Of course that doesn’t replace the Bible by any means, reading the word is important. But if talking is sometimes hard and you don’t know what to say we can write to God about what we are thinking and invite him into the conversation❤️

    • @ladyursala
      @ladyursala 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@KewpiKayo Yup, journaling is a great way too. It can be a prayer journal in that you bring your requests and praises for God. Then you can look back in the future and see how God has been faithful and how he’s answered your prayers!

      @KewpiKayo 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      just wondering why do you think everything has to be about God? I’m genuinely curious. and if the point of spreading the word gets completed then what would u do then 😭. lol it’s kinda a dumb question i guess but it’s 4 my religion classes n js something i’m curious abt so sorry if it sounds rude

    • @KewpiKayo
      @KewpiKayo 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@rb-fk9rx No worries those are some really good questions!! I will do my best to try and help, and give you some scriptures that will explain why I think this way. Sorry if this is a little long, but hopefully this will be helpful for you!
      To me, God should be our everything because, most importantly, he loves us. He loves us so much that he gave us his son Jesus. (John 3:16 King James Version) “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
      Through believing in Jesus and that he died on the cross for our sins, God has given humanity the opportunity to be reconciled with him because we have been separated from him through the sins we commit.
      Secondly God created everyone with a purpose, a plan, in mind. A good purpose: (Jeremiah 29:11 King James Version): “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end…”
      This third reason kind of also relates with the second reason, but God made us and knew us before we were even alive. (And made us with a purpose in mind!)(Jeremiah 1:5 King James Version):
      “Before I formed thee in the belly, I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and ordained thee a prophet unto the nations…”
      God has a specific purpose for everyone!
      But what if we don’t know what our purpose is? That’s when we read the Bible and ask of God and wait for what he tells us. (I know it sounds easier said than done) but by having faith and believing that God does indeed have a plan for us and seeking him he will guide us in the unique purpose we were made for (Matthew 7:7-8 King James Version, these verses are what Jesus said ):
      “7)Ask and it shall be given you, seek and ye shall find , knock and it shall be opened unto you:
      “8) For Everyone that asketh recieveth and he that seeketh findeth and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.”
      These are just a few of a multitude of reasons why I think God should be our everything. I hope this was helpful.
      Now on to the question of if the point of spreading the gospel gets completed than what would we do after that. That is a really good question, and to be honest I’m not really entirely sure; but I will try to explain the best I know how and try to provide scriptures for biblical context.
      I do believe that God wants everyone to be able to go to heaven to be with him and that’s why he sent his son Jesus to us. Hell was never meant to be a place for humans to go, that was meant as a punishment for the devil for being prideful and for trying to usurp/ go against God’s authority. (The devil failed epically in his attempt🤣).
      But because Adam and Eve listened to the serpent/satan in the garden of Eden and ate of the forbidden fruit of Knowledge of Good and evil; humanity had gone against God’s command.
      But God is merciful and faithful and had a plan in mind to save us by sending us Jesus.
      God works all things out (Romans 8:28 Ling James Version) “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
      I probably went on a tangent, but I say all of this to say it is needful that we continue to spread the word so everyone has the opportunity to hear about and accept Jesus as their personal savior.
      Also, even if everyone knows about God and his love, we still need daily encouragement. His word is living, and can apply to all sorts of different circumstances we may face in our lives. We may get one message out of what we read in one part of our lives and the next part or season of life get an entirely different meaning, if that makes sense.
      We need the word because it’s where we get our faith, and everyone deserves the opportunity to get to know God and his love for them. Faith comes by hearing the word of the Lord. (Romans 10:17)
      The original question might not have been aimed at me but I wanted to try and give an answer lol. Sorry this was so long, but I hope this was helpful to you and I wish you the best of luck in your Religion classes! God Bless!!

    As a Christian writer, there is soo much pressure in so many ways.
    For starters, my current project which will be my debut novel is very dark in a way. And I feel like people will be judging about it because they aren’t Christian. It’s even literally in a fake afterlife! And for awhile I felt like I couldn’t do this, but ultimately my book is spreading a Godly message. And in order to do that I have to write the things people struggle with too, not just all the happy parts of life.
    Second is the pressure from the book and writing community, especially writing lgbtq characters. In my faith engaging in homosexuality is a sin, so I cannot and will not write lgbtq characters. Not only is it uncomfortable for me but it goes against my belief. But so many people shove this in your face in the community.
    Another thing is that the women characters need to be “strong and independent” and my characters aren’t that. I have many female characters of all sorts, but I won’t criminalize being feminine and reliant on a male character.
    And another big one is smut, I will not write smut in my books because again it goes against my faith and it makes me uncomfortable. But especially in booktok, people think you need smut in a book for it to be good. Or even that they will only read a book if it has smut! Or just read a book because of the smut.
    I’m so happy that you’ve spoken about your faith, Christians are often shut down and honestly kind of hide their faith when in the public eye like with being a writer.
    As always you’ve inspired me :)

    Thank you so much for speaking on this, Ana! As a fellow Christian writer, I was just wondering the other day if the current projects I'm working on, which don't have Christian characters, are glorifying God, and if they're appropriate for me to even write about as a result of that. So this came at just the right time, giving me reassurance that they can still be stories worth telling, and that they can still spread God's message and love. Especially, hearing you talk about creating characters that have good hearts and are good role models, and it being beautiful to be designed by a creator and then to create yourself, really speaks to me. Christian writer here, bringing in my two cents.
    My approach to writing is answering this question: “does this story glorify God?”
    I write a lot of fanfiction, and as you know, fandoms are very much so not God honoring. I have to be careful about what I write and the themes that underline stories. Basically, is what I’m writing true (does it preach that we as people are inherently good, or are the characters flawed beyond what they can do to “fix themselves”) and is it lovely.
    There are stories that I have written that I really regret writing because I feel they went against what I stand for, but I only realized it after writing + posting, sometimes even months later.
    Ultimately the approach I have to take is asking: “does this story bring people to beliefs or attitudes that are contrary to the gospel and God’s word?” Sometimes I do put in themes that I regret later, just because they indirectly glorify man instead of God.
    I don’t think you have to explicitly name the name of Jesus or have Christian characters, but make sure you aren’t glorifying sin (accepting or congratulating sinful behaviors or lifestyles). And always be in prayer about what you’re writing. If you feel like God is telling you to quit writing it, it is in your best interest to STOP writing it and kill your darlings, because God wants what is best for us, and living in disobedience keeps us away from being in fellowship with Him.

    Thatnk uou so much for this. As a Christian writer ive always felt like ppl expected all of my works to have a biblical undertone and the series im working on doesn't have one. Ive felt, especially recently, that i was doing something wrong or something like that but God has your video pop up on my fyp and seeing another Christian writer with the same views as me helps a lot!
    While watching you video I actually got inspired for a book that has a Christian undertone that i would actually enjoy to write! Im not going to start it yet cause im still working on a current series but id just likw to say thank uou for the video! It has helped me a ton!

    This video has just been so encouraging. I’ve been praying about writing a book and to write it the way God wants it written, but I’ve had some trouble. Like I want to make a good book and make believable, realistic characters. And sometimes, in reality, it’s hard to make believable characters when some aspects you want to write about go against what the Bible says/ your morals. Like I don’t curse and I’m uncomfortable doing that, but one of my characters comes from a perspective where that would be completely normal for her, among a few other things. Essentially I’ve had trouble figuring out how to write it so the story and characters are relatable and believable for all audiences, but most importantly that it brings Glory to God. I have a theme that is not explicitly Christian but it alludes to Christianity, like the chronicles of Narnia, but in a dystopian future world. I guess long story short is that I just want to do a good job at writing and put put forth my best effort since I’m a newbie; so this video was a great encouragement. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us Ana!

    I am a Jehovah's Witness who's also a writer and I just want to thank you for touching on this subject. I've worried about how I can write my stories in a way that pleases and honours God, and what you said about creating your best work makes so much sense. The types of stories I like to write are realistic fiction that shows the trials and tribulations that people go through and how important compassion is. Talking about suffering and mental health is so important to me. Through creating characters that feel real I hope it can help someone to realise that they're not alone in what they go through.

    It's very encouraging to hear your story and your take on this topic! I'm also a Christian writer, and from my perspective I think it's completely valid for you to write books that aren't explicitly "Christian". I write fantasy, so in my case I'm creating a whole new world, so it makes sense that God is not going to be an element of those stories, but I've made it my goal to write clean fantasy stories that can be enjoyed by Christian readers without feeling guilty or having to skip or filter through parts (since there is so much gratuity in novels today). But like you said in that MLK quote, it's about us doing our work with integrity and in a God-glorifying way, and I think it's so cool that we can do that even in a "secular" way which will be more accessible to non-Christian audiences!

      being a good person doesn’t mean you go to heaven! it’s believing that Jesus died on the cross for our sins and living for God. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that who shall ever believes in him will not vanish, but have everlasting life.” john 3:16

    I found Jesus in a fairly spectacular way in December 2022. I've been an aspiring writer for years before that. I stopped writing for a year, I found myself hesitant to continue out of a fear that my stories weren't appropriate to the service of his Glory. After a year of reflection, prayer and a little bit of back sliding into my previous life 0 I've finally come to a point where I am excited to once more write. I pray that through my words and stories God will guide me, that if at least one person is influenced by my work, they will be influenced in the right way. Even if I'm focusing on making good shoes.
    I've also struggled to find a writing community in which I feel comfortable, the vast majority of young aspiring adult writers I have met, are all very Anti-God. And while I don't need my writing group to be Pro-God, I feel I am an unwanted presence in their space.
    I'm really glad Ana spoke on this topic, Its nice to see.

    As a sister in Christ I would just want to say that you can write a story that isn't a 'christian' story per se and not really be about religion or God, but still bring it to Him and ask "how can I bring you glory through this book? Help me to shape it to be a well written story that You are pleased with, but others can also find joy in." The story doesn't have to be about faith or christianity but we can still pray for God to use it and for Him to guide us in our writing it. Because anything we do, should be through Him :)

    ana neu is also a quarter chinese so one parent must be half chinese and one grandparent must be full chinese.
    a lot of chinese immigrants in the west would convert to christianity.
    a lot of chinese migrants to southeast asia would also convert to christianity under european colonialism at the time.
    conversion to christianity brought about quite a bit of benefits, like access to mainstream society, jobs, women.
    plus, ana neu is also 3/4 european so she has a lot of european blood and family relatives. and europeans tend to be christian or come from christian families or descended from christians. even if europeans aren't that religious, the christian church may still form a big part of family life, cultural life. they may announce the birth of a baby to the priest/pastor; they may have the marriage solemnized; they may have church funerals. the church has become more of a cultural thing regardless of personal belief or not. and maybe it's better than way.
    like ana neu said, it is possible to write a novel as a christian author, without making it so christian-oriented. though, I feel like the christianness of the author does seep right in. i suspect abbie emmons is christian by the values she's trying to endorse in her **the otherworld** novel.
