    My heart went out to you when the second screen broke, we've all been in similar situation at some time. I find that some days, no matter which job you are working on it just doesn't go right., I try to walk away and leave it, as I've found it's often easier when you come back another time in a better frame of mind, but that's hard to do when you are determined not to be defeated. You've had a good run, and you got there in the end, well done.

    Hi Keith, Greetings from Australia.. I had the same problem with a windscreen rubber which I bought from Mini Sport Australia.
    I assume this was sourced from a British manufacturer, but after battling with it for an hour, I gave up and got a windscreen specialist to do the job.
    I wasn't surprised to see that he had the same problem. We gave up and he ordered a rubber from an Australian manufacturer.
    This was much more pliable and the screen was in within minutes.
    I didn't,but I hope you can contact Mini Spares ,to let them know about your dissatisfaction with their product.
    That will hopefully encourage them to correct the problem with their part, so that other people don't have to go through the pain you have had.
    I much enjoy your videos, as it takes me back to my restoratio

    Unfortunately current regulations prevent the use of the old chemical softners in rubbers. So all new rubbers are stift and harder to use. I do like the idea of using a heat gun to locally heat up areas. It seemed the window trim went in very easily as opposed to mine. Keep up the good work!

  • @markdraper7

    God that was funny but i do feel for you to. I've been there plenty of times, whether it's slipping with the spanner and skinning your knuckles or breaking something ( not once but twice lol) when fitting it, does make you really angry but as a bystander, it's bloody funny.

  • @MiddletoM
    @MiddletoM 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The guys who i got to fit mine said the new seals are not rubber but more like silicone so they "bounce" when you try to push the windscreen in as opposed to rubber which you can almost mould into shape. The chap had been in the business for over 30 years and said hes never struggled so much and he had a helper!

    • @MiddletoM
      @MiddletoM 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      also, he was really really giving it some welly when palm shoving it into the seal and came very close to giving up.

    • @classicminiworkshop

      Thanks, I've heard that a few time now. There is certainly a big difference in feel and suppleness of the old vs new rubber

  • @dieselbushcraft1299

    Oh crickey I really felt for you, you felt so bad but you’ve got a screen in there now. Do you mind me asking why you put the rubber in the aperture and then fitted the glass into the rubber. I’ve fitted a rear screen years ago and fitted the rubber onto the glass, then fed so e paracord around the rubber with a lube of washing up liquid. Then placed the glass and rubber against the aperture and pulled the cord from inside of the car.
    I guess different ways to the same ends but wondered if the way you did it has advantages.

    • @classicminiworkshop
      @classicminiworkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I need to give that a try sometime. I've done it that way with a rear side window before but never a front screen

    I got a new laminated screen with a green top sun band delivered from Bull Motif. My wife helped me fit it and it was a bugger of a job. Get the fairy liquid in to it. It's better doing it as a 2 man job .

    Dude.. I hope the bounce of the tool didn't scratch PIOO or Venie... Dude.. I'm sorry to see the broken screens, but it's good to see a respected restorer does have frustrations and issues. but hey.. the angle of the camera makes Sprout look fantastic.. what a great paint job. As for mail ordering the screens.. I have no choice.. can't drive over and get one. This episode is as we say... "when it rains, it pours".. one issue after the other... thanks for sharing your frustrations.. don't remember if you said where the rubber came from.. curious?

    Hey Keith. 4 years on I know, but still a good watch. Do you ever seal the rubber up with black sealant, or always just like the video and the rubber and screen goes in 'dry' other than some water/soap? On my mini when I got the screen put in back in 2008, it leaked rather badly, so I took it back to the windscreen place and they sealed the rubber to the car, and not had a single issue since. Regarding the rubbers, I got one for the mini I am doing up currently, and its as hard as heck also, but had another one from years ago I found, and that is still supple, so yeah - wont be using the hard rubber! Think one came from Huddersfield and one from Minispares, but I cant remember which was which.

    Not good if it was a Mini Spares sourced rubber, if you have time, give them the feedback about your hassle, ultimately, they do care enough to take some action, they have used rubber hardness testers in the past to ensure parts are correct, maybe they should test this rubber vs. an old one...… Well done for persevering! Cheers!

    Hi Keith great work, could please make a normal speed video how to remove the front windscreen and put back on?
    My Mini has a small rust hole under the windscreen, would it be better to grind it down and use fiber glass, or to cut it would need cutting out ? Can I send you a picture by an email or on WhatsApp?

    I found exactly the same when I replaced the the rubber surround on mine. The new rubber is definitely stiffer than the old one. I struggled to get the glass screen in but managed. Managed to get the beading in with difficulty. When I came fit the little fillet piece that bridges the join. I split the rubber!!!!!!!!! Once again rubber replacement parts that are inferior to their years old originals.

    Haven’t watched it yet but that bleep tool that you used for mark last time on the era update, yeah, I feel it will come into play at some point. It’s bloody awful when shit like this happens mate may I suggest putting the rubber on the screen first then putting some string in the groove and working it in circles until the rubber works it’s way over the lip. Sam 👍

    • @MarkDavies4281
      @MarkDavies4281 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've always put the rubber onto the glass then put the string( I use parachute cord as its strong yet small in diameter) into the rubber groove, then locate the screen and rubber in the lower section of the car body then go inside (it helps to have another person outside to aid balance) and pull the cord all the way around gradually and it will pop in easy.
      I've done it the way you tried and yes it can work but this can happen that way (think I've broke x2 screens doing that way before changing to the string way)
      The string way just pulls the rubber seal lip into the body shell so no pressure on the glass at all and worse case the seal doesn't pull in and you have to reset again.
      Good luck 👍 and use some fairy liquid 😉 helps no end
