One thing i think would be really cool for deltarune's final boss would be if it pulled a Lavos (Chrono Trigger) and drug us through the dark worlds we went through already and forced us to fight shadow clones of the bosses of each chapter in pairs (king and queen, ch3 and ch4's bosses, etc) as phase transitions. What i REALLY want though is for toby to surprise us with one of the best finales to an rpg ever. Something completely unique, something that could only appear to you in a dream.
I imagine it will be completely different from Undertale. There, your soul splits in two, but it doesn't shatter and instead reforms. I imagine that in Deltarune, the soul does shatter into tiny bits, and the void background that appears when creating a vessel appears, then you'll be given an option to give up or continue. If you give up, faint courage plays, and the game closes. If you continue, the bits of your soul converge, and the screen goes white, then... your soul is reformed.

Lets think a bit about themes of some of Tobys Leitmotifs. Lets start with Megalovania, by far the most famous, and very well known to have been used in homestuck first. In both pieces of media it represents a climactic battle, against a merciless powerhouse who kills without reason. In Homestuck, that is Aradias assault upon Jack Noir - in Undertale, its against you. Both fights involve somebody who has become far more powerful than the "normal story" would allow (with Bec Noir being an anomaly indirectly caused by the Trolls' misformed Genesis Frog, and Sans quite literally calling you an anomaly). Both fights are very clearly in vain, and are rather stalling for time. I think that should be enough to establish a connection between themes where leitmotifs are shared. Moving onto Penumbra Phantasm. Lets see where its used in Homestuck: Most notably, its used in Umbral Ultimatum, on the page [S] Jade: Enter For you non homestuck fans, I'll quickly summarise. Jade, one of our 4 main characters, enters the medium (where the actual story takes place). Her dog is a God, for lack of a better word. Due to taking too long to enter, she is unable to Prototype anything; prototyping is _necessary_ but also imbues all enemies with the properties of what you prototype. In an attempt to save her life, her dog, again, a GOD, prototypes itself. She is now safe, but enemies now have literal godly powers, and Jack Noir, our main villain at the moment, inherits all of these abilities, making him completely unstoppable. Throughout the story at this point, we had heard a lot about "creating an unbeatable enemy", and how it should be prevented (note: people messaging them from the future). And yet, inevitably, it happened regardless. That is its main usage. It is used in multiple other locations of course; notably Saviour of the Waking World ([S] John: Rise Up), in which our main character ascends to God Tier after being slain. You may recognise familiar themes here, of the creation of a great power. Thats what I personally believe Penumbral Phantasm represents. But unlikr Megalovania, I dont believe it represents an _evil_ necessarily; just the consequences of your own actions. Finally some notes about Toby using these songs. Another Medium is a direct remix of an unused Homestuck song, Patient, which itself is a remix of a used Homestuck song, Doctor. The name itself is a reference to the Medium mentioned prior, and the entirety of Hotland seems to reference LOHAC. Toby is no stranger to re using homestuck motifs. My final note is what I believe is the most important. If you are going to skip my long rambling, please read this. Penumbra Phantasm is not a song we know entirely. Part of it was leaked, however. On Tobys polite request, it was asked to not be shared around. However, upon being asked for more details about it, he responded: "AT SHADOWS EDGE BREAK THE TWILIGHT REVERIE" And if that doesnt scream Deltarune to you, I dont know what would.

It's also important to rene ber that a phantasm is a product of fantasy or illusion, and a penumbra is a part of an eclipse where its light and shadows meet. The literal name of the song itself implies HEAVY connections to Deltarune.

People making Deltarune predictions using Homestuck songs and other of Toby's past work is the most beautiful thing. Also goddamn this just sounds beautiful I can't even point out everything done well this just legitimately feels like something Toby would use as a final boss theme.

I absolutely love how epic, emotional, and truly determined on how this final boss music is. Even if it won’t sadly be an official song in the game, it still sounds phenomenal and maybe one day Toby could possibly have the same leitmotif but better.

Ideas for how the key mechanics could work in this fight (assuming Noelle's with the main three): FIGHT - Four separate targets are shown on the attack bar, and each one matches up to the individual damage of an attack from one of the heroes. ACT - Multiple abilities can be used between the characters: - Red Buster: With enough TP, Susie can deal a good amount of damage to the Penumbra Phantasm. - Dual Heal: Ralsei and Noelle can collectively heal you by a great amount. - X-Slash: Kris can deal more damage against the Penumbra. - Courage: Raises your defence for a turn. - Supercharge: Powers up the Yellow SOUL if it is active. - FluffyGuard: Defends your SOUL from attacks. Up to four can be used at once. DEFEND - Due to it being everyone, using defence raises TP by 24% collectively.

this has to be the best final boss theme ive heard this sounds like it could actually be the ending theme it doesn't depend on the motifs as much as the other fan made themes, and uses them in a meaningful way this song sounds like it could actually be used in the final game
I like the idea that the SAVE points we’ve been using ever since Undertale have all this time been blessings of the ANGEL. That as we’ve grown stronger, as we’ve progressed, as YOU became more entrenched in this world, YOU were in turn giving the ANGEL strength, YOU were acting upon it’s blessing. And Kris, the real hero of light, the one YOU took control from has grown weaker, their tenuous grasp on reality slowly slipping as their control wavers. We didn’t know this of course, YOU presumably care about Kris, YOU presumably care about everyone. But the ANGEL manipulated us, the ANGEL manipulated Kris, now we’re stuck like this as Kris’ loses their DETERMINATION over their world, while YOU gain far more than they ever had. And now in THE END, the ANGEL is the one who takes that DETERMINATION. That power used to control the world, it takes it and reshapes it in the vision it so desires, but much like ASRIEL, that DETERMINATION isn’t it’s own, and as such it has less control over it than it should. So then in THE END, everyone’s combined DETERMINATION is enough to stand up to it, perhaps not match it, but enough to give YOU control once more, YOU are needed now more than ever because YOU alone have the power to fight the ANGEL. But YOU need others, YOU made friends through your adventures, friends that both YOU and Kris share. Now do they know the truth, a truth Ralsei always knew, he alone trusted YOU, he was never suspicious, but to the others he may have appeared as such, YOU were suspicious of him because YOU don’t remember the time that YOU shared with him. Ralsei does, he remembers all of it he knows YOU aren’t a bad person, he trusts YOU, that’s why he never gets mad at YOU, why even should you do something terrible, something like the Snowgrave/Weird Route he will still chose to believe in YOU. Maybe even your most rash actions have a reason for being, he trusts YOU, and only by learning of how much and why will we feel bad for suspecting him. YOU are needed in this world, YOU are the counter to the ANGEL. Kris can get to THE END all on their own, without YOU. As was shown by them being able to complete Chapter 1 without our intervention should we choose to skip straight to Chapter 2. Kris won’t do what we would though, they won’t talk to everyone, they won’t fight the secret bosses, Kris is capable, but they aren’t YOU. YOU need to do what only YOU can and will if the ANGEL has any chance of being stopped. Kris doesn’t realize this yet, which is why they lash out, why they fight back, but once they do perhaps their view on YOU might change. Sadly if things reset and the ANGEL succeeds, Kris will forget, everyone will forget, except Ralsei which leads us back to Chapter 1 and why he’s always so supportive. Why the ending song for Chapter 1 is “Don’t Forget” it’s Ralsei telling himself that he can’t forget what happened, that he has to be strong, that he will be with YOU in the dark because YOU need someone to help you. Because as was shown when DeltaRune first came out, YOU didn’t remember, YOU forgot, so he has to remember for us.

Amazing job. I thought you'd not make anything as good as that Gaster Weird Run theme but this is really on that level, and I love the detail of the wings being pretty similar looking. Penumbra Phantasm is probably the most underrated Toby Fox song, I would say it is kind of like the antithesis to Hopes and Dreams. Both are final boss songs with an "angelic" feeling, but the way they do it is so different. Hopes and Dreams is still a fun song, it gives you the vibe of meeting a childhood friend for the first time in who knows how long and preparing to duke it out one last time with them. Penumbra Phantasm is not that. Penumbra Phantasm has an otherworldly feeling, like an alien or a god or who knows what else descending upon you, telling you how pitiful your attempts are, how powerful it is and how you cannot even begin to comprehend what you are fighting. Penumbra Phantasm feels like hearing all of that, taking it in and choosing to reach for your knife all the same.

As both a Deltarune and Homestuck fan, I love this. Brings so many memories. You took Penumbra Phantasm and you turned it into a song I could genuinely hear in Deltarune! I tip my hat to you, really.

Considering Megalovania came from from Homestuck I think this actually makes sense for a roundabout reference to what mostly inspired Undertale in the first place.
After discovering that there's a very faint reference to "Penumbra Phantasm" in "Hopes and Dreams", together with the "Fountain" and "THE HOLY", i am fully convinced that "Penumbra Phantasm" will be Deltarune's final boss theme
To anyone reading this, if you pitch down this song a little, you'll get it to sound much closer to the original Penumbra Phantasm. I think this would be closer to what the final boss theme would actually sound like.

i think this would make so much more sense if ACTing had an option called "swap" where you could swap to a certain character for a bit, but rouxls would be the most powerful, as he is the RULES (Rouxls) CARD (Kaard), being able to change everyones defense, attack, or even if the enemies attacks work.

This song's been stuck in my head for weeks and i noticed it was it's one year anniversary, so congrats! i didn't notice this when i first listened to it, but i love how this song has a very faint bit of Hopes and Dreams towards the end, just like Hopes and Dreams has a pretty hidden bit of Penumbra Phantasm / Doctor.

When I listen to this I imagine this Angel being even more powerful than Asriel, a deity that has the ability to warp timelines and entire universes. Kris would be the only one remaining to stand against it, in a battle of who controls who with alternate universes swirling around the battlefield through visions and glimmers.
this is amazing, genuinely on toby's level of quality for the kind of music he'd make for this scenario i like to think that for this fight, there'd be a metric ton of ACT options, and each one would correlate to every major character you'd have met up to this point; party members, important lightners, asriel, important darkners, secret bosses, your vessel, whoever the knight is kris's act, costing 999% TP, would involve opening a ("the") locket to banish the angel's heaven, while everyone else's acts either boost TP, deter the angel's heaven's attacks, or statboost
I'm just gonna throw this out there, I could totally see the official final boss theme of Deltarune when it comes out being an epic amalgamation of Penumbra Phantasm, the Freedom leitmotif and maybe even a bit of Megalovania. If Toby considers Deltarune to be his magnum opus, and it draws on things he's created before, it only makes sense that the music will as well.
I think the Freedom motif would be used in a Gaster encounter. If you've seen Andrew Cunningham's video on it, the Freedom motif is basically an advanced version of Gaster's theme.

Lets think a bit about themes of some of Tobys Leitmotifs.
Lets start with Megalovania, by far the most famous, and very well known to have been used in homestuck first.
In both pieces of media it represents a climactic battle, against a merciless powerhouse who kills without reason. In Homestuck, that is Aradias assault upon Jack Noir - in Undertale, its against you. Both fights involve somebody who has become far more powerful than the "normal story" would allow (with Bec Noir being an anomaly indirectly caused by the Trolls' misformed Genesis Frog, and Sans quite literally calling you an anomaly). Both fights are very clearly in vain, and are rather stalling for time.
I think that should be enough to establish a connection between themes where leitmotifs are shared.
Moving onto Penumbra Phantasm. Lets see where its used in Homestuck:
Most notably, its used in Umbral Ultimatum, on the page [S] Jade: Enter
For you non homestuck fans, I'll quickly summarise. Jade, one of our 4 main characters, enters the medium (where the actual story takes place). Her dog is a God, for lack of a better word. Due to taking too long to enter, she is unable to Prototype anything; prototyping is _necessary_ but also imbues all enemies with the properties of what you prototype. In an attempt to save her life, her dog, again, a GOD, prototypes itself. She is now safe, but enemies now have literal godly powers, and Jack Noir, our main villain at the moment, inherits all of these abilities, making him completely unstoppable.
Throughout the story at this point, we had heard a lot about "creating an unbeatable enemy", and how it should be prevented (note: people messaging them from the future). And yet, inevitably, it happened regardless.
That is its main usage. It is used in multiple other locations of course; notably Saviour of the Waking World ([S] John: Rise Up), in which our main character ascends to God Tier after being slain.
You may recognise familiar themes here, of the creation of a great power. Thats what I personally believe Penumbral Phantasm represents. But unlikr Megalovania, I dont believe it represents an _evil_ necessarily; just the consequences of your own actions.
Finally some notes about Toby using these songs. Another Medium is a direct remix of an unused Homestuck song, Patient, which itself is a remix of a used Homestuck song, Doctor. The name itself is a reference to the Medium mentioned prior, and the entirety of Hotland seems to reference LOHAC. Toby is no stranger to re using homestuck motifs.
My final note is what I believe is the most important. If you are going to skip my long rambling, please read this.
Penumbra Phantasm is not a song we know entirely. Part of it was leaked, however. On Tobys polite request, it was asked to not be shared around.
However, upon being asked for more details about it, he responded:
"AT SHADOWS EDGE
BREAK THE TWILIGHT REVERIE"

I absolutely love how epic, emotional, and truly determined on how this final boss music is. Even if it won’t sadly be an official song in the game, it still sounds phenomenal and maybe one day Toby could possibly have the same leitmotif but better.
I think Toby WILL use Penumbra Phantasm in DELTARUNE, either as the Final Boss track or as The Old Song Coming From The Sea (or both)

Ideas for how the key mechanics could work in this fight (assuming Noelle's with the main three):
FIGHT - Four separate targets are shown on the attack bar, and each one matches up to the individual damage of an attack from one of the heroes.
ACT - Multiple abilities can be used between the characters:
- Red Buster: With enough TP, Susie can deal a good amount of damage to the Penumbra Phantasm.
- Dual Heal: Ralsei and Noelle can collectively heal you by a great amount.
- X-Slash: Kris can deal more damage against the Penumbra.
- Courage: Raises your defence for a turn.
- Supercharge: Powers up the Yellow SOUL if it is active.
- FluffyGuard: Defends your SOUL from attacks. Up to four can be used at once.
DEFEND - Due to it being everyone, using defence raises TP by 24% collectively.

it doesn't depend on the motifs as much as the other fan made themes, and uses them in a meaningful way
this song sounds like it could actually be used in the final game
I like the idea that the SAVE points we’ve been using ever since Undertale have all this time been blessings of the ANGEL. That as we’ve grown stronger, as we’ve progressed, as YOU became more entrenched in this world, YOU were in turn giving the ANGEL strength, YOU were acting upon it’s blessing.
And Kris, the real hero of light, the one YOU took control from has grown weaker, their tenuous grasp on reality slowly slipping as their control wavers. We didn’t know this of course, YOU presumably care about Kris, YOU presumably care about everyone. But the ANGEL manipulated us, the ANGEL manipulated Kris, now we’re stuck like this as Kris’ loses their DETERMINATION over their world, while YOU gain far more than they ever had.
And now in THE END, the ANGEL is the one who takes that DETERMINATION. That power used to control the world, it takes it and reshapes it in the vision it so desires, but much like ASRIEL, that DETERMINATION isn’t it’s own, and as such it has less control over it than it should. So then in THE END, everyone’s combined DETERMINATION is enough to stand up to it, perhaps not match it, but enough to give YOU control once more, YOU are needed now more than ever because YOU alone have the power to fight the ANGEL. But YOU need others, YOU made friends through your adventures, friends that both YOU and Kris share. Now do they know the truth, a truth Ralsei always knew, he alone trusted YOU, he was never suspicious, but to the others he may have appeared as such, YOU were suspicious of him because YOU don’t remember the time that YOU shared with him. Ralsei does, he remembers all of it he knows YOU aren’t a bad person, he trusts YOU, that’s why he never gets mad at YOU, why even should you do something terrible, something like the Snowgrave/Weird Route he will still chose to believe in YOU. Maybe even your most rash actions have a reason for being, he trusts YOU, and only by learning of how much and why will we feel bad for suspecting him.
YOU are needed in this world, YOU are the counter to the ANGEL. Kris can get to THE END all on their own, without YOU. As was shown by them being able to complete Chapter 1 without our intervention should we choose to skip straight to Chapter 2. Kris won’t do what we would though, they won’t talk to everyone, they won’t fight the secret bosses, Kris is capable, but they aren’t YOU. YOU need to do what only YOU can and will if the ANGEL has any chance of being stopped. Kris doesn’t realize this yet, which is why they lash out, why they fight back, but once they do perhaps their view on YOU might change.
Sadly if things reset and the ANGEL succeeds, Kris will forget, everyone will forget, except Ralsei which leads us back to Chapter 1 and why he’s always so supportive. Why the ending song for Chapter 1 is “Don’t Forget” it’s Ralsei telling himself that he can’t forget what happened, that he has to be strong, that he will be with YOU in the dark because YOU need someone to help you. Because as was shown when DeltaRune first came out, YOU didn’t remember, YOU forgot, so he has to remember for us.

Penumbra Phantasm is probably the most underrated Toby Fox song, I would say it is kind of like the antithesis to Hopes and Dreams. Both are final boss songs with an "angelic" feeling, but the way they do it is so different. Hopes and Dreams is still a fun song, it gives you the vibe of meeting a childhood friend for the first time in who knows how long and preparing to duke it out one last time with them. Penumbra Phantasm is not that. Penumbra Phantasm has an otherworldly feeling, like an alien or a god or who knows what else descending upon you, telling you how pitiful your attempts are, how powerful it is and how you cannot even begin to comprehend what you are fighting. Penumbra Phantasm feels like hearing all of that, taking it in and choosing to reach for your knife all the same.

As both a Deltarune and Homestuck fan, I love this. Brings so many memories. You took Penumbra Phantasm and you turned it into a song I could genuinely hear in Deltarune! I tip my hat to you, really.

When I listen to this I imagine this Angel being even more powerful than Asriel, a deity that has the ability to warp timelines and entire universes. Kris would be the only one remaining to stand against it, in a battle of who controls who with alternate universes swirling around the battlefield through visions and glimmers.
this is amazing, genuinely on toby's level of quality for the kind of music he'd make for this scenario
i like to think that for this fight, there'd be a metric ton of ACT options, and each one would correlate to every major character you'd have met up to this point; party members, important lightners, asriel, important darkners, secret bosses, your vessel, whoever the knight is
kris's act, costing 999% TP, would involve opening a ("the") locket to banish the angel's heaven, while everyone else's acts either boost TP, deter the angel's heaven's attacks, or statboost

I'm just gonna throw this out there, I could totally see the official final boss theme of Deltarune when it comes out being an epic amalgamation of Penumbra Phantasm, the Freedom leitmotif and maybe even a bit of Megalovania. If Toby considers Deltarune to be his magnum opus, and it draws on things he's created before, it only makes sense that the music will as well.
I think the Freedom motif would be used in a Gaster encounter. If you've seen Andrew Cunningham's video on it, the Freedom motif is basically an advanced version of Gaster's theme.

I think that instead of undertale's finl fight that feel hopeful, deltarune's final fight should feel hopeless
