    This is the third time I have talked about this Theory on my channel, I've believed in this theory since 2022, I forgot to mention this in the video but I came to this conclusion after seeing fanart of this theory x.com/MARNlE_/status/1548477649651085313 (link of the fanart), when I first saw this art I stopped dead in my tracks and said "that's it that's what we are doing that's the ending" it was like everything clicked into place right in this moment. I'm very happy to finally put all my thoughts on this topic into one place. and also sorry for spoiling the end for you if I'm right.

    Maybe Noelle ends up opening many dark fountains due to her father passing away, as a way to flee from reality, and that leads to the roaring. Banishing the angel's heaven would be essentially destroying this alternate reality Noelle created for herself. She wouldn't be evil, just misguided, and would still fit the overall narrative.

    If shes the angel then her heaven is creating a glitched out dark world to bring back the dead characters (rudy, dess, and even birdly), and this could somehow cause anomalies or whatever that are destroying everything and you have to seal this darkworld which obviously noelle wont stand for so you have to tragically battle her.

    5:58 Honestly, I think the prophecy is written in a way that multiple people could be the “Angel”
    Like, I still think Asriel could fit the “Angel” in the prophecy for the pacifist route.
    1: He literally turns into an angel in the final boss fight
    2: Seeing as it specified an “Angel who has seen the surface” will descend from above, Asriel did see the surface, so that still fits.
    Also for the Asgore bit, all that confirms is in that specific route, Asgore thinks Frisk is the Angel. Again, Asriel doesn’t just destroy the barrier, he turns into an angel before doing that.
    Then again, the geno route still also fits with the player angel interpretation.

    • @visthj
      @visthj หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Based on the video, the snowgrave route won't get an ending - it'll be endless, as we in Noelle's body will be infinitly wandering around the world covered in darkness and frozen corpses. Yet Asriel wasn't ever mentioned in this. What if he goes into this Noelle's dead world alive, only *after* all the disasters ended?
      Now the craziest part - what if he'll be our last chance to *kill* our human soul in the strongest monster body - to finally *end the game,* bit by bit, slowly torturing Noelle, just like in the crucifixion of Jesus? So that after all the prophecy will still be fulfilled?
      Or will he just steal it from Noelle like she did with Kris? Because Undertale showed us how good the weakest human soul with enough determination can be even against the most powerful monster - Asriel Dreemurr. See how the tables have turned, and now Asriel will be one to win - by banishing the Angel's (Noelle's) Heaven.

    I'm curious what you think of the dialogue from Spamton in snowgrave that goes something like: "You think making frozen chicken with your side chick is gonna let you drink up that sweet sweet freedom sauce? Well you're ****ing right! But don't come crying to me wishing you let your old pal Spamton kill you." I see no reason to believe Spamton is talking to the player. He's telling Kris that if we follow the weird route, it will allow Kris to be free of the player's control, which runs contrary to your theory.

    • @fiasch2879
      @fiasch2879 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I probably missed the part where that would run contrary with the author's theory, so idk, but the ending prediction of the player taking control of Noelle and fighting Kris and co seems to line up with Spamton's words. If the player knows that Noelle is going to be their puppet in the finale they might try to pursue the Snowgrave route to make her stronger. Thus Kris is going to be free in the end but they will not like the result as Noelle will just wipe the floor with them Ralsei and Susie. But at the same time if there's only one ending then why is Spamton telling Kris about some kind of way to achieve freedom if in the end it amounts to the same? Idk maybe it's what you meant and i just wasted my time writing this comment...

    • @RedPandaSmash
      @RedPandaSmash หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@fiasch2879 If the ending regardless results in the player controlling noelle, then it wouldn't make a difference to kris's freedom whether we follow the weird route to make noelle stronger. Either way kris is no longer being controlled, which would make this spamton dialogue nonsensical.

  • @CantusTropus
    @CantusTropus หลายเดือนก่อน +39

    Got to admit, that's a pretty good guess as to what Toby's dream was.
    (Spoilers for OFF:)
    Further evidence of this: the old-school Rpgmaker game "OFF" is clearly a major inspiration for Toby - and the exact thing you described (controlling the final boss instead of the player character during the final battle) is entirely possible in that game (though it's optional). It's pretty sensible to think that his fever-addled brain would conjure up that idea.

    • @KrebbieGaming
      @KrebbieGaming 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Didn't OFF's plot directly inspire the Genocide Route if I'm not mistaken? They're quite similar, and the final fight with Sans and the player is an adequate mirror to the fight with The Judge and The Batter (though I could be wrong)

  • @CantusTropus
    @CantusTropus หลายเดือนก่อน +14

    Potential other evidence for The Soul being put into a different character: there is code in the game specifically designed to re-draw the menu screen to be slightly wider if the player's name is more than seven characters long (I think, it might be six). Obviously, there would be no point to this if we always control Kris, so barring this being a deliberate red herring (and a really subtle one at that), or something like Kris changing their name, there really is no other explanation.

    Angel's Heaven
    Break down the term.
    Angels come from heaven (they don't create heaven), so the Angel's Heaven would be the person/place/thing that constitutes the origin of the Angel. This also makes sense, as Noelle is clearly not entirely "The Angel" yet, so it is logical that by banishing the Angel's Heaven, we can stop the Angel from ever actually coming into being.
    Think back to Undertale, where a prophecy of an Angel also exists. As you may remember, there are two potential candidates for beings that can become the Angel according to the Prophecy, and that would be Asriel and Chara. Asriel, in the True Pacifist Route, becomes the Angel who frees the monsters by shattering the barrier, and Chara, who in the Geno Route, frees the monsters by bringing them death and oblivion (this interpretation of the prophecy is valid according to Gerson). Notice how two things are the same: no matter what happens, if an Angel is created, it brings freedom in some way, and it is caused entirely by the actions of the player. Flowey would never become Asriel and shatter the Barrier, nor would Chara slaughter the underground and end the world were it not for the direct actions and choices taken by the player.
    In essence, this makes the player the person/place/thing responsible for the creation of the Angel in Undertale, or in other words, we the player are the Heaven that the Angel comes from.
    If you take this logic and apply it to Deltarune, many things begin to make sense, for example:
    - When spamton says "Heaven, are you watching?" he is indeed speaking to the player.
    - During the Snowgrave route, we are molding Noelle into something similar to Geno-Chara. We power her up, and make her feel nothing, until she will eventually be in the position to destroy everything. This is why the world is in danger according to the prophecy, we the player are a curious being thanks to our power to SAVE/LOAD, and if we aren't banished, we will eventually create a being much like Geno-Chara and destroy the world.
    - Spamton sells us the Thorn Ring because he sees that Noelle is becoming like an Angel of Death. Spamton desires freedom above all else, so naturally, if he can boost the power of the Angel who will eventually bring him that freedom, of course he would do it, even if that freedom comes in the same form as the freedom the Angel of Death in Undertale brought.

    This theory does make sense to me and I like how you tied all the potential "Angels" into one neat conclusion. The concept of a final boss battle which you cannot win would also parallel UNDERTALE's Pacifist route, in which the final boss battle cannot be lost.

    I think I can un-crack the cracked gaster theory at the end, hear me out! I'll edit this once I think of more ties!
    Gaster's creation: Nothing is known about his creation or how he fell into it, but we know that he was shattered into pieces upon falling inside. Maybe that creation could be, hear me out, GAMEMAKER STUDIO. This is what was used to make undertale and deltarune, and given how he was *shattered into pieces* and *has an influence in both games*, it would only make sense. How else would he be able to have such an effect on both titles?
    Gaster's "Entry Number 17": we get notes of "dark, darker, yet darker", "photon readings negative", "the darkness keeps growing". This could imply that if he was at all influencing the creation of the game, he might be looking for that light of the soul, or the real world influence. That influence could be what he needs to get out of the "dark world" he's in and back to reality.
    The followers: Maybe somehow through some unknown means, monsters from undertale (and perhaps figures from deltarune) are seen/interacted with in various places, all having ties to him. One has a piece of him, others talk about him in hushed whispers as it's "rude to talk about someone who is listening". Perhaps these followers stumbled across him by chance somehow, or are puppets themselves. Made in an attempt to draw the light to him and break him free.
    The vessel: At the start of deltarune we get to make the vessel, which is immediately discarded with no warning. Gaster clearly has some influence with the light, letting it make its own form to influence the world more directly. However, before the vessel is fully formed and given a set directive, someone appears and cuts contact with gaster. Immediately we are thrown into Deltarune, no context to what happened. I am inclined to believe that this random was Toby Fox himself. He's been seen using the same black backdrop and simple text before, why not use it now when it could be regarding something like this? Perhaps he's keeping Gaster trapped in gamemaker studio, for reasons unclear.

    Personally the main thing for me that pulls me towards the player being the Angel is the idea that the Angel’s Heaven is tied to the Roaring and the continued opening of Dark Fountains in general
    The Dark Worlds not only symbolize fiction and escapism metatextually, but they're also where most of that happens literally- they're where we get to go on all the fun adventures, where we get to play this game we love. So, what's "heaven" to a player of a game? A game that never ends of course. It's not directly founded in terms of evidence anywhere, I've just had the idea for a while and find it fits waay too well for me to ignore. Great video btw :>
    Edit: your way of explaining that connection works just as well actually

  • @CantusTropus
    @CantusTropus หลายเดือนก่อน +33

    About the crack theory: OK, so, if we go with the whole "Gaster 666" stuff...well, the reason WHY Satan fell was because of Pride - he wasn't happy with being a creature, with not being God. In a way, he wanted to be "independent". If we're going with all the stuff you talked about in the video, what if Gaster was an "Angel"/Player that didn't want to fulfil his function - in other words, he didn't want to stop playing the game and wanted it to last forever, or wanted to make his own. That would KIND of fit with the fact that he can apparently erase and merge timelines...if indeed the main theme of Deltarune is a warning against relying on escapism, then this interpretation of Gaster would certainly work as a strong visual warning about what happens if you go all the way off the deep end.

    I'm really enjoying seeing the number of people who grasp the concept of Narral dimensions (what you've called 'layers of fiction', which is a perfectly communicative descriptor) increase, even if we have no standardised nomenclature for it.
    Has anyone else noticed how much the church in hometown resembles Ralsei with his hat on in chapter 1?
    Your description of the Trinity falls into a contentious view, often regarded as a heresy called modalism among Catholic and Protestant theologians alike. (just a note, not a condemnation or judgement, as I suspect you're simply doing your best from outside or little experience within the religion)

      I do subscribe to a rather tragic theory that Ralsei is a follower of the Angel religion, but he believes it's his destiny to carry out the prophecy of banishing the heaven. This is due to his similarities to Asriel (who does follow the angel religion), and that he has the same healing prayer as Noelle (who also follows the angel religion.)

    one of the major themes in deltarune is escapism. everybody in hometown has some kind of sadness in their life, and you can see that especially with the main characters. you can't really say who has it worse than everyone else, but noelle is definitely set up for things to get worse for her very soon. she has a troubled relationship with her mother, her father is dying, and her sister has been missing for so long that everybody has moved on except for her. at the end of the day, the dark worlds may be all that she has left, and that's why she'll create the angels heaven. her own heaven where none of her problems exist anymore

    Your best video IMO. Fresh, compelling answers to some of the biggest questions about the game. It's been a while since I've felt this kind of giddy excitement over a Deltarune theory.
    I especially like the talk of the Holy Trinity. I've seen people equate the angel with Christ before, and it's always felt clumsy. In Christianity, angels and Christ are intuitively different things. But you've brought in this framework where the angel is a union of three things, one of which is a Christ parallel, and suddenly it's a much more sensible reading.
    I feel like we can apply this to Undertale as well. I've never been convinced by "player = angel" for Undertale, but "player, soul, and Frisk = angel" is much more compelling. Or perhaps replace "soul" with "Chara" if you're a NarraChara truther.
    Noelle as the Angel/Christ is a very compelling theory, but I'm not 100% onboard. You could very well say the same thing about Kris. Under the Holy Trinity, they are already the angel. More evidence: they position themselves in front of the angel wings on the rug at the end of Chapter 1. Etymologically, "Kris" could stem from many names that eventually resolve to "Christ" -- Kristian, Kristine, Kristopher. So "Kris" is much closer to Christ than "Noelle".
    If we're theorising that Noelle is Christ, I feel that we have to account for that. Maybe Kris is the Antichrist -- false prophet -- and Noelle is the true Christ? Vice versa? Or maybe it doesn't truly matter who embodies that "Christ" role, just that someone is there to fill it.

      @blackchestnut  หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Oh yeah There's a ton of stuff going on with Kris in terms of religious symbolism they have the Christ like imagery that you mentioned but they also have Devil connotations with the red horned headband and on top of that you could also read eve connections with their connections to Apples, which I think could be a big deal if we want to throw Gaster into the ring and say that Kris was Gaster pilled in the bunker.
      Loved your video by the way I didn't leave a comment at the time because I didn't know what to say, wish I had said something tho, I found it on reddit right when it dropped, I was actually your 2nd subscriber.

    Unironically one of my favorite Deltarune theories but maybe thats just cause Noelle is my favorite character lol.
    Tho I have to wonder, If Noelle is meant to be a parallel to Christ, could Noelle in the snowgrave route be a parallel to the anti-christ? Perhaps this could create connections would Gaster aka the devil. Prehaps we meet with him at the end of snowgrave while playing as Noelle?

  • @just_a_hedgehog

    Omg... if your theory is correct, and the game ends WHEN we vanish the Angel's heaven... then Toby wasn't lying to us when he said the game will have only one ending. Hear me out, we obviously have (since Chapter 2) three paths that we make, neutral (killing whatever enemy you want withouth exceeding), pacifist, and... kind of genocide (since the snowgrave route), but IT DOESN'T MATTER WHICH ONE WE CHOOSE, since all of them leads to the same ending... we vanish the Angel's Heaven one way or another. Damn...

  • @GameJam230

    One of the most interesting aspects of Deltarune's story is the messaging it has around escapism in art, and how characters from that art would feel about their existence if they knew it was only to serve a higher being- to be there as their escapism.
    With that theme in mind, I personally believe that Kris is the Knight (and while I don't feel like fully getting into my reasons why here, I have many), and they are using the dark worlds to make changes for the better to their own life, as people can't choose who they are in Kris' world... but what if we were in a NEW world? Ultimately, I believe this sets up an extremely interesting parallel between the main bosses and Noelle, and the secret bosses and Kris, and given I think the soul will be placed in the vessel by the end of Deltarune, I think it's entirely possible that Kris and Noelle WILL be the bosses of the final chapter, or one of the final couple.
    Thinking about Deltarune with these story themes also allows us to make major predictions about the other dark worlds. We have a chapter focused on board games, one on the internet, and one on TV. If all the chapters will tie into a theme of art forms used as escapism, another will likely be in books (Gerson's perhaps), and another could be in cooking/food (after all, the last newsletter DID tease a "Gingerguard"). But the most important chapter? The one focused on video games- Deltarune itself. Deltarune itself is the chapter on video games, with a boss as Noelle, a secret boss as Kris (or vice-versa), and the "Human" from the prophecy is the vessel (although the weird route could perhaps reverse/swap some of these roles).
    And, while you said playing as the vessel takes away from the stakes and conflict- and I agree- this may mean playing as the VESSEL is only for the weird route ending. After all, you ruining Kris' life by killing people will likely push them over the edge, and there aren't SUPPOSED to be stakes considered in the route where you intentionally try to kill everyone- you WANT them to die, so playing as a vessel with no emotional value to the game world ensures this can happen.
    Of course it's just a theory, but by looking at the messaging we get from the first 2 chapters combined with known teasers for the next chapters, I think it has some strengths.

    45 Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land. 46 And about the ninth hour Noelle cried out with a loud voice, saying, “☜☹✋📪 ☜☹✋📪 ☹✌💣✌ 💧✌👌✌👍☟❄☟✌☠✋✍” that is, “Kris, Kris, why have You forsaken Me?”
    47 Some of those who stood there, when they heard that, said, “This Woman is calling for The Lighteners!” 48 Immediately one of them ran and took moss, filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and offered it to Her to drink.
    49 The rest said, “Let Her alone; let us see if The Lighteners will come to save Her.”
    50 And Noelle cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up Her spirit.
    51 Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, 52 and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the monsters who had fallen asleep were raised; 53 and coming out of the graves after Her resurrection, they went into Castle Town and appeared to many.
    54 So when the Darkeners and those with him, who were guarding Noelle, saw the roaring and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, “Truly this was the Delta Rune!"

    I have a similar crack theory to yours that kind of goes in the opposite direction. I think that Gaster was just a regular video game character but when he started experimenting with the dark worlds he thought “if I could turn these fantasy worlds real, I could make a world where the monsters aren’t underground, and then everyone will be happy” then ig Toby Fox wasn’t happy with that and said gg and expunged him from the games but Gaster partly succeeded so now he’s like one step above just a character from Undertale, now he’s some entity that has access to Twitter lol.
    In that way he still mirrors the fallen angel except it’s rising from hell to heaven.

    I agree with a lot of what you're saying (though you are committing the heresy of partialism), but I think you're off-base with saying that the Angel's Heaven is Noelle opening too many Dark Worlds and causing the Roaring. Angel's Heaven, as a term, seems to be the opposite of Hell's Roar - which Jevil refers to and is presumably synonymous with the Roaring. Also remember that the Legend states the Three Heroes will only appear *after* "the Earth will draw her final breath". And the whole World's Edge business - where is that? And in the Roaring cutscene the Delta Rune is shown being subsumed by the Dark Fountains. There's also a bunch of little stuff that doesn't line between the Legend and the Roaring, as well as Ralsei's general suspiciousness making me disinclined to trust any exposition coming from (there's stuff he says where there is no way the story won't prove him wrong, like the whole business about darkners only feeling truly fulfilled when serving lightners).
    I'm also unconvinced by the message you think the Snowgrave Route will have. A key metric I judge Snowgrave theories on is "Does this differ in a meaningful way from Undertale's Genocide Route?". And this theory fails that test - it's just rehashing the same themes of completionism and being unable to let go.
    Also re: the Vessel - I'm not sure it is a non-character exactly. The dehumanising way it's talked about by Gaster - yet it can be given "gifts" such as "mind" or "voice" - suggests to me that it is a living being, and our creation of such a being just to serve us may have consequences. After all, the game does save your vessel...
    Also re: Don''t Forget - no, I don't think it is describing the Roaring. The thing with "when the light is running low and the shadows start to grow/and the places that you know seem like fantasy" is that it's an exact synonym of "penumbra phantasm"/"twilight reverie"/"the edge of the shadow where reality and dream meet". The Roaring seems to have too much darkness and not enough light to be considered "twilight".
    Also re: pacifism and the ending - I really don't think pacifism will have a key impact on the ending like what you're suggesting.
    I also feel your theory doesn't really take into account everything else that's going on in Deltarune, especially Gaster, though admittedly perhaps that's something you deal with in other theories.
    Also, I think the fruit juice is meant to actually be wine that's called fruit juice.

    Gaster also has a lot of weird Angel conections, but not really the Angel specifically. More so a Fallen Angel/Demon, with a lot of references to the number 666 and describing Gaster as having "Fallen" into his own creation. As well as his association with Ralsei, Ralsei being the "Prince of Darkness", and Gasters domain in Deltarune being called "The Depths"
    Perhaps the Angel that Hometown worships is actually their understanding of Gaster as just some vague higher entity? Ralsei already claims to have heard the Prophecy from "Time and Space", not knowing it came from Gaster. It saves the weirdness of them worshipping... Noelle... who is the real Angel. Instead it is a False Angel, a role Gaster fits more.

    When it comes to phrases like “Oh my god,” I think it’s fair to wonder if the implications are even intentional. You *can* dodge any phrase that’s so much as etymologically related to Christianity if you try, but it’s rarely worth the effort and tends to come across as clunky.
    For reference, here’s some things you *can’t* say if you want to dodge any reference to Christianity:
    - Oh my god/gosh or any variation thereof.
    - Geez (abbreviation of “Jesus Christ”)
    - Heaven* (except maybe as “the Heavens”).
    - Hell/heck (bonus points: this one also implies the existence of the old Norse religions, as Hell is named after the goddess/realm Hel).
    - Damn/darn
    - Christmas
    - Saint/Santa
    - Church
    - Sin* (etymology unclear, but the modern meaning comes from Christianity. Maybe Judaism if you push it).
    - *Goodbye* (it’s a mutated abbreviation of “God be with you”).
    Like I said: not worth it, especially considering that most people will never even give such minor details a second thought.

    • @Tulip_bip
      @Tulip_bip หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      yea, christianity is so heavily tied into western culture that it's kind of surpassed just the religion. non religious people celebrate christmas, everybody says "oh my god" and "jesus christ", tons and tons of media has just accepted that they need to use it even when it doesn't make sense in the context of the world. i think it's kind of obvious that christianity itself doesn't actually exist in deltarune, it's referenced a lot but the religion of the angel is clearly supposed to be the stand-in for it
      the holiday family being full of references to christmas doesn't really mean that christianity actually exists, how weird would it be for someone irl to be named "december holiday"? lmfao

    What if Chapter 6 is more or less the boiling point of the conflict? Like, what if Chapter 6 is happening in the Bunker and Kris grows overwhelmed, and then we are there and they just rip us out and throw us away, to which Gaster places us in the Vessel, with the whole point of Chapter 6 being to reconcile with Kris and unite one last time in the fight against the enemy? Hell, what if the way we reconcile with Kris is by FINDING DESS?
    So yeah. Wouldn't call it as simple a solution, frankly.

    - The Angel...

    Surface...
    - They will *return*.
    - And the underground will go
    empty.
    (Asterisks replaced with dashes since TH-cam uses asterisks to bold specific words)
    Notice how it says *return*? Asgore, infamous for putting burdens on children, attempts to gives us his soul so that we can leave and then RETURN to save monster kind. Which does not happen. I mean it sort of does with all the resets, but we as the player cannot fit that description as we do not get to see the surface until after The True Pacifist Ending. You could argue that "Hey, Frisk does technically require getting an ending first. It could be intended to absolutely apply to the player/Frisk! Maybe even a hint towards there being a new ending unlocked in case you killed flowey!" and you would be right. It can absolutely mean that and I 100% agree that Toby Fox probably thought about that when writing it. The point of the prophecy and the Deltarune itself is to be multi-faceted, to have several meanings and interpretations. But the in-universe candidates for The Prophecy to be fulfilled that have both left and returned without rewinding time being required are Chara and Asriel. You can't say that Asgore, The Most Divorced Man In The World, While Dying, is giving more reliable information when he is simply enabling us to fulfill the prophecy that 2 other characters directly fulfill. It's pretty much always a "Both work" situation for the Prophecies and Deltarunes tbh.
    The rest of this video is great though. Good thoughts and opinions and theories and all the rest of it works, very good. A lot of people really don't pick up on the CONSTANT trinity symbolism (Undertale having 3 parts to the player character: Frisk/Chara/The player) throughout the games. Really like you pointing out the Jesus symbolism too, something that's so overlooked even though I realized it immediately I managed to forget lol. (Also dude, finally someone else predicting that Noelle + The Red Soul will be a final boss!!! I think that it might be a Weird Route exclusive though) Something else that apparently only I have thought long and hard about is that The Red Soul really obviously isn't Kris' soul, and a Vessel fight could be made interesting simply by being the storage for Kris' soul. Hell, maybe Kris' soul in the vessel has been The Knight this entire time! We could end up in a scene where Kris doesn't know why they, as a soul inside a vessel, would decide to fight us or do something to start a fight. They could do something like, right after Dess appears, separate us from her. Etc.
    Also the fruit juice thing is just real, a lot of churches were like "We can't give alcohol to kids are you INSANE" so they just did fruit juice.

    Think of the queen undyne ending from undertale. It has 3 possible variations but its technically the same ending, right?
    Maybe itll be similar for deltarune where in the end there will be variation but its still technicslly the same ending
    Normal Route w/ Noelle and w/o Noelle if you failed the final boss fight could be variatiobs of the same ending
