  • The Audinate Dante protocol is a powerful tool for sharing multiple channels of digital audio between devices. Peter Schneider and WIll Colding show off a small-scale demonstration rig and go over the basics and terminology.

    To clarify some network details and fuel further research for any readers. A more complete way to describe the situation discussed at th-cam.com/video/nbilNNiJBT4/w-d-xo.html is to say an ethernet device that is configured for DHCP but can not find a DHCP server assigns itself a randomly generated link-local IPv4 address. This is bad for a computer that needs to be routed through a gateway to another network like one across the internet but is somewhat fine for an airgapped network and should be totaly fine for a network as simple as a Dante network. When I say a Dante network is simple I mean it has no need for VLANs or distribution and access layer switches or printer servers or DNS servers or Domain Controllers or file servers, these are things you would find in even a small business network.

    Realy helpfull,
    In the begining, i thaugh i could simply connect my Lynx Hilo directly to my Focsurite RedNet pcie card. (Direct plug n play like USB audio interfaces)
    At my surprise, Dante Control Software din't detect nothing. I thaugh there was a hardware or driver probleme. Ableton detect focsurite driver but show error when i click on it.
    So in the end, a gigabits switch is part of the connection. Audio interfaces and PC must be connected to the gigabits switch. Otherwise, Dante Control software wont detect the audio interfaces.
    Let me know if i'm wrong

    Great video guys. Would anyone know if there are any advantages applicable for broadcast sound between the Cisco SG300 & the SG350 switch? I would love to know any practical advice as to which is better for a TV/Broadcast scenario.

    • @PeterSchneider1
      @PeterSchneider1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Daniel - The SG350 is as far as I know an updated version of the 300 - we have spec'd them in a few installs without issue. Here's something that may not be obvious: the SG350-10 *non* P (aka POE) version runs on 12V DC.

      @novuskin 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PeterSchneider1 Thanks for this, it seems the Cisco SG series are one of the most popular. Is there another version that does not require to be run on 12V DC? Would be handy for field installations.

    So theoretically or even can be practically, if i use dante, i can basically add my outputs. But can it be, if i use dante for additional outputs for my PA speakers and the orginial outputs from my Digital mixers for personal IEM?

  • @Douglas_Gillette

    One of the main benefits of networking is scalability and fewer cables. This seems impractical for on location where all the equipment is nearby and the space is fixed to a filming location.

    I am interested in creating a Dante network without any Dante-Enabled gear. I know they have adapters that you can buy that plug into your devices and converts the audio to IP. Is it possible to create a Dante Studio without having a mixer that is Dante-Enabled?

    Reason I ended up here: searching for solution where (with dedicated PC, where necessary) for multi-channel audio playback; e.g. stereo, 3-way "active" speaker system, active crossover (slope, phase, delay) where audio signal is divided (High/Mid/Low) for "active" speaker system - e.g. each speaker/driver driven by dedicated amplifier - 6 channels... expansion to sub-woofer channel also(?)... audio signals would be standard 192kHz/24-bit PCM (also FLAC files... DSD???)... possibly also 5.1? (likewise, active speaker systems)

    So, am I understanding properly that wordclock is not really necessary between devices ??

    • @PeterSchneider1
      @PeterSchneider1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct - word clock is not necessary between devices, but rather word clock should be connected to one device, which is then manually selected to be the Dante clock master. All other Dante devices will slave their timing to that device. The master device should also have "slave to external wc" check in the Dante Controller.

    Hi, i have Cisco SG300 10port switch, how to configure this for Dante Network. I done the configuration from Yamaha website. My iP adress for switch is 192.168.0.254, but I must set a dhcp for each of ports ? Pleas tell me how is Yours switch configured? Thanks for answer ; )

    • @Douglas_Gillette
      @Douglas_Gillette 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No. The only interface that requires an address is the management interface which is actually a virtual interface. This virtual interface is logically connected to the switch. All the physical ports are access ports.

    I just got around to seeing this. My question is about managed versus un-managed switches. Peter clearly states that using managed switches is 'optimal'. But after going through the level one of Dante certification I get completely the opposite idea. In fact I got the idea that using managed switches could sometimes get you into needless issues. That one is better off using an un-managed switch. Care to comment. Thanks for the video, very useful.

      @@njh209 So in the DAW/Main computer, any tracks that are recorded will go to the 970's hard drives? Is there an advantage to using the 970 as opposed to the main computer's hard drive? I don't think the 970 does the ADC or DAC. Wouldn't it make more sense to have a good converter (Dante) that does ADC and DAC, and then have that audio sit on the main computer's drive? I'm trying to understand what the advantage is of the 970, as it is not a budget piece of gear.

    • @njh209
