@cottleful On the contrary, the ZX-4R is perfect for near beginners. It's not so fast that they'll be more focused on not dying than learning. And it has plenty of capability to grow into. A personal anecdote: I started on a Ninja 500. After 2 months, I upgraded to a Daytona 675. I learned more in 2 hours on the Daytona than I did in 2 months on the Ninja. I was not nearly good enough to use all of Daytona's capability. But the bike was good enough to allow me to more comfortably explore what I was capable of. I would never buy a new Ninja 400 unless you really like that class and want to stay there. If it's for learning, plenty of other people have already done that, just buy their used bike. True beginners should start on something cheap and used so not as much is lost when they inevitably drop it. After a very short period with the learner bike, get what you want - probably not a liter or giant bagger - but otherwise, get what you want. Something being "too good" is never a reason to tell someone else to not buy it.
You Cali guys don't know true misery of riding in the cold till you've commuted in NYC year round lol. All jokes aside, great episode about 2 great bikes under 10k a lot of newer riders or casual riders will be considering. I've ridden the ZX4RR and the chassis is really great. The true potential of that engine shines when they're unlocked which most people will do almost immediately. Graves has a lot of really awesome parts for that platform. The GSX8R does have an amazing engine, but I was really turned off by the weight of it. Some people may not mind it but I'm a shorter rider @ 5'8" and I definitely felt it.
People saying that you should have flashed the ECU are missing the whole point... Both bikes got the job done. If you don't need to win races, your choice only matters to yourself. Get a bike you love, for whatver reason it might be, and you've made a great choice already.
Great review, brought back so many great memories of Socal. The one thing you missed is you should have both switched bikes, to see how you both liked each bike.
Vast majority of beginner riders will buy used bikes because they are affordable. For $10k you could get some damn nice used bikes…hyabusa, cbr1000rr, Ducati 1199, s1000rr, gsxr1000r, zx10r, R1, Concours 14, all for the same price or less than these new ‘squirts’. Yes I know these aren’t starters but that’s the point… Starter bikes should be $2-5k based on performance value.
You guys did my weekly weekend ride. Borrego...stop at Josies...up and down Palomar, then straight down 76 to the Strand before going back down Mission to my crib in Oside.
Great video guys. I almost bought an 8R, I ended up buying a CB750 Hornet. Price and fuel consumption is what was the ultimate selling point for the Hornet. I couldn't find any actual tested data for consumption on the R8, but there was plenty for the Honda. The Honda is a fun bike and it loves to rev, but I still remember the torque of the Suzuki.
I really like the GSX-8R, but the Kawasaki takes the cake with this one. Inline 4, dual front breaks with inverted and adjustable fork, what more can you ask for from a 400cc bike.

I have found that I enjoy shifting a lot on twisty mountain roads, so I will often prefer a lower-powered vehicle for those roads. Something about the need to shift to keep in the powerband makes it seem that I am more a part of the performance. Even though a more powerful vehicle with a larger torque band that needs less shifting will be faster, it will be less fun, at least for me. I learned this with cars. My Father had an old MG Midget with something like 65hp that required a lot of shifting on twisty roads. It FELT faster on the twisty roads than my current car (Focus ST) even though it was not.
Bigger guy did not follow any of the rules of being a good passenger - maybe it was intentional for comedy, but good job smaller guy for completing the lap.

Europe gets the full power versions 59kW (79.1hp), but the USA, for instance, has a restricted 42kW (56.3hp) ZX-4RR and in Australia the power is pegged at 55kW (73.8hp).
I understand your point, I was close to buy a CBR650R, for the reasons you poited out. But at the end of the day, I bought the ZX4RR. Why? It has a sportier look and a sportier engine, and sportier suspension than the Honda. And its more agile and lighter, easier to manouver. It was a tough choice, I looked to the CBR600R too, but I am a new rider, and 120 plus hp, is problably not a good ideia for a begginer rider
Ive been stuck between 2 bikes and would love to see an episode where you compare and give that honest opinion between the '24 Ninja ZX4RR 40th anniversary ABS and the '24 Aprilia Tuono 660.
270 crank; i get it that the 2nd cyl fires after 270 degrees on the crank but wouldn't the other cylinder fire only after 90 degrees? how is this better then 180 degree crank?
It is mostly a noise and vibration difference. A 270 degree crank has the same firing interval as a 90 degree V-twin like a SV650 or Ducati. To most peoples ears, the uneven firing interval of a 90 degree V-twin or 270 parallel twin sounds alot nicer than a 180 paralell twin which sounds like a lawn mower engine. 270 degree twins also do not have the awful rocking couple of a 180 degree twin (or not to the same extent) so they are generally less buzzy to ride on the highway. The reason they cost more is due to manufacturing as 270 degree twins require a twisting process during forging which is more expensive. But in terms of power and torque per cc theres is very little difference. 270 degree twins can generally be made larger due to the better balance though. Think africa twin 1100. Last difference is in torque pulses. The uneven firing interval is said to improve traction and make it easier to reach the limit. (Think yamaha cross plane vs traditional I4s. or big bang engines in motogp). However with small capacity bikes like these that can barely break traction, it is not a concern. Thanks for listening to my rant
I ditched my traditional Japanese bikes and dived into the Chinese market. Love the CFmoto 450ss thus far and it's a great choice for new street riders with some experience in dirt, scooters and or already did their permit class. Test rode one during a demo and bought a new one the same day. Parts is still an issue but healtech, yoshimura, Vandemon, DNA air filters etc... are bringing big name brands to a newish U.S Chinese motorcycle. It gave an experience rider such as myself everything I wanted, Sporty look, lowish clips ons, brembo front brake, 50HP and much more out of a small little fun packed 270 degree parallel twin, 449cc engine; Price wise it beats everyone on the market. If you can't afford these two amazing bikes in the video, I personally recommend the 450ss.
There's a lot of people in the comments defending the 4RR. They are completely different bikes, and something I got to waffle with when upgrading. 4RR is a cool as hell bike. But unless you're a string bean, it's not a great bike ergonomically. Suzuki fits more riders and is a little more friendly daily. 4RR is more of a street legal track toy. If you don't mind riding at 10K rpms plus all the times, sure go 4RR if you can stand the ergonomics for daily use. But honestly, the 8R is better all arounder, but it's not with out it's own faults.
These two bikes actually have a similar HP curve on dyno. The flashed zx4rr is like the GSX-8R but offset 5000 RPM. The GSX should take off a lot faster either way though. That drag race was a lot closer than I thought it'd be for a gimped 4RR. I definitely think the 4RR is better to start with, it is relaxed slow HP curve especially unflashed, but when you need power, rev it up and it's there
I would think for street the Gsx8r and for a full on track build/bike the ZX4rr. However, not sure what class they will allow the Zx4r though.... I raced @ CMRA (Texas) a ninja 400 in the Light weight twins, 500 class, and D superstock. I raced a R7 in LWT, D superstock, D superbike. The ZX4r would not qualify for LWT or 500 class. So maybe it would race in D class? So from a racing stand point, would suck not have very many different races to do with the ZX4r. Several race guys I know with ZX4r's have had issues with the tuning to get decent power out of the bikes. Still the best bikes for new riders are a used R3 or used ninja 400.
Nice bikes there. Interesting comparison. Not a track rider, so for what I ride: Comfort, fuel range are most important along with style of the bike and reliability on public roads more than faster speed.
Kawasaki zx-4rr indonesia has a maximum power of 77 ps and a maximum torque of 37.6 Nm {3.8 kgfm} / 12,500 rpm with the test method on Engine Dyno / CRANKSHAFT, I replaced the exhaust with Yoshimura Heptaforce TTB (Titanium Titanium Blue) and replaced the spark plug cable with a larger size, also added a zero voltage / neutral electrical cable to 6 cables, placed in several places so that the electricity is more stable, also replaced Velocity Stage 3. I did the test again with Chassis Dyno, the result was 78.5 Hp. please remember for Chassis Dyno the results are smaller than Engine Dyno, so it can be converted 1.10 - 1.15 to get the engine dyno results.

I know nothing about bike racing but that track surface looks horrible.. is that a typical track surface cuz I would have imagined they'd be perfect condition
ZX-4R comes with fully adjustable suspension and superior brakes! Remember chassis, brakes and suspension are something that you can enjoy to the fullest on the road, just swap the springs for your weight and style and enjoy the bikes agility and feel . Moto3 small bikes have more corner entry speed than the GP bikes ! the whole point of small 4bangers is to enjoy the nimbleness and flow .
Everyone posting that the ZX4 is a completely different bike with the ECU flashed are correct. However it's also worth pointing out that it's ridiculous that you have to spend the money these things cost and then spend more money to get the performance that you really have already paid for to start with. Yes, I do realize that this isn't even really a manufacturer issue but a government one. Still frustrating nonetheless.
If the zx4 rr is flashed it would be a lot closer than that. I am 6’2 and have the zx4rr tuned huge difference than the 52 hp stock pulls all the way up to 14k doesn’t struggle in lower gears like before just saying but if you keep it power bands if a fun bike and enjoyable ride

True beginners should start on something cheap and used so not as much is lost when they inevitably drop it. After a very short period with the learner bike, get what you want - probably not a liter or giant bagger - but otherwise, get what you want.
Something being "too good" is never a reason to tell someone else to not buy it.
you guys need to switch bikes and give each personal impression for each bike after
Glad to see more On Two Wheels!
Great video guys. Much better than a standard comparison.
2 UP was funny as hell hahaha
People saying that you should have flashed the ECU are missing the whole point...
Both bikes got the job done. If you don't need to win races, your choice only matters to yourself. Get a bike you love, for whatver reason it might be, and you've made a great choice already.
Flashing the ECU is to get the bike back to STANDARD, which would make it a more fair test. The fact the those bike are gimped in the us is laughable.
8R is a sport bike and position is like on naked.. right..
Hm
Borrego...stop at Josies...up and down Palomar, then straight down 76 to the Strand before going back down Mission to my crib in Oside.
please do the Suzuki GSX-8R vs Yamaha-R7, I'd like to know which is the best.. thanks
definitely the 8r
Really enjoying this kind of comparison content!
Kawasaki Z900 enters chat. But between these two bikes I would still choose the ZX-4RR.
This video was gold and pure awesomeness. Great entertainment thanks boys 👍 from Australia
Good job. Keep the good work coming.
Aspirational, thank you! Loved it
Bigger guy did not follow any of the rules of being a good passenger - maybe it was intentional for comedy, but good job smaller guy for completing the lap.
Hello Bradley
Whats up !
Ritchie Thorp here
Brought back memories with your comment of SV650 racing days
Not sure you remember racing me . Thanks for the memories
I own a Ninja 400 and I've driven a XZ4 on track. Boy oh boy that bike is AMAZING!!! It screams so high and drives like a dream. I'm buying one for sure in the future.
Yup, you guys are nuts for the 2up lap.
Even with my KLR650 on a casual neighborhood ride, I hate the feeling of a passenger on the back.
Hey Guys, what absolute perfect Test you ve done here. I will have to decide between those both Bikes and would choose the Suzuki in cause of the economics, because i am 54 and as a beginner dont think about race Tracks. Thanks a lot. Wish you always a safe ride! Greetings from Germany!
4rr is not the direct competitor of 8r. So what’s the point? Same price?
the title is 10k vs 10k bike
enjoyed this guys. I am going for the Suzuki 8 R
Sweet video. 👏🏼 Loved the sv650 but not the lack of slipper clutch stock. Can you record the cardio audio and then match it to GoPro footage in post?
If you clap or make an audio spike that also has a strong visual cue, it's easy to sync the audio to video footage.
Team Green 💚 Kawasaki having the guts to make a 4 cylinder 400 in 2024 wins.
Cool video for sure. Would be interesting to see the drag race results after switching Riders
Everyone complaining about the prices is out of touch with reality. They are selling electric bikes for 5000 right now.
They’re also selling 400cc bikes for 5k
This video should of been Suzuki GSX-8 vs Kawasaki Ninja 650. ..Cool comparison nonetheless.👍🏽
My gsxr 750 is 21 years old and still does 175+ and it only cost me about 2 grand and still gets all the looks and likes of anything on 2 wheels out here in El Paso Tx so why in the wide world of Rossi would I need to waste all them extra thousands on something that really isnt much quicker than what I've been riding over the last 2 decades and I just turned 60..Exhaust pipe drop..😎😢
Good fun vid, thanks guys!
Europe gets the full power versions 59kW (79.1hp), but the USA, for instance, has a restricted 42kW (56.3hp) ZX-4RR and in Australia the power is pegged at 55kW (73.8hp).
Great review, little of everything.
Around 10K brand new the Honda CBR650R. Cannot beat it. Super sport looks in line 4 and reliable.
After an SV650 this 8R is my new favorite bike - awesome content and i would say 8R is way more comfortable :)
Hi admin what is the equipment used to check tyres? I really appreciate any help you can provide.
The fact that is fires so soon after is what gives it the smoothness advantage. From the short bit I read about it..
The crank goes around twice for every power stroke. So its 270-450-270-450 etc. A 180 degree crank would go 360-360-360-360.
@@DogmaticShrew But how is it better?
@@Expertshot777 Thanks for posting it.
It's not a rant, it's informative lol
Cheers
I agree with this. I have both the 450ss and zx4rr. Prefer the 4r but price wise, can’t beat the 450ss
My starter was an 08 cbr600rr for $7k. It only had 2k miles and was mint… from the dealer!
Awesome video guys.. the two bikes I’m literally considering… what comms system did you two use?
So Suzuki makes ninjas now... Bring back the SV1000S!
Everything I've seen is the ZX-4RR is a fabulous bike - after its tuned to eradicate the very very restrictive and limiting factory standard tune.
Can you unrestrict and tune both bikes and redo
Yes. There's a vid on here of a guy who just got his GXr flashed and tuned...really opened it up. And a guy named Scouts out did his ninja a few months ago
I’ve been riding Harley’s and supermotos for 4 years on street. (Been on dirtbike since 6) the zx4rr is the perfect bike I was looking for. It cruises highway fine on my way to the canyons.
I demod an gsx8r at cota. I love that bike. Just 350cc higher than my bike but way stronger. I just didnt like how far the clutch engage at. My 450ss clutch engage about 1 to 2inches away from the handlebar while the gsx8r was almost all the way out.
Idk why, but seeing two dudes in full race leathers two-up on track is the funniest damn thing
I know nothing about bike racing but that track surface looks horrible.. is that a typical track surface cuz I would have imagined they'd be perfect condition
I’ll choose the little screamer all day every day
ZX-4R comes with fully adjustable suspension and superior brakes!
Love how your explained engine differences
As a previous owner of a Bandit 400.....I can say the little 4s were definitely in the U.S.
should be the GSX8R vs Triumph Daytona 660
As a San Diego dirt and sport bike rider there’s so many options when it comes to riding out here
Nicely done guys. Does that track require constant sweeping to stop it becoming like the surrounding desert?
Awesome. More of these please! 😎
I think 8r sitting posture is more comfortable
If the zx4 rr is flashed it would be a lot closer than that. I am 6’2 and have the zx4rr tuned huge difference than the 52 hp stock pulls all the way up to 14k doesn’t struggle in lower gears like before just saying but if you keep it power bands if a fun bike and enjoyable ride
I’m getting one in 2 months, I’m assuming the tune makes the bike way better? Is it a must to get?
@@jasontoth7965 Yes. Most places will do multiple flashes for free so you can just flash it stock and then again if you ever decide to get an exhaust system.
Aint nothing fun about about a 400 cc bike in my opinion. Once you ride a liter bike you can never go back
@@claudemaggard7162 I traded in my MT-09 for less power, and my friend traded in his ZX10R for a ZX6R. People go back all the time. lol
As a fellow 6'3 dude who eats, it's nice to get an accurate representative of my build on these bikes
"i trust you bud" hahaha that part really laugh me hard. good content brother! love from squad ninja zx25r from Malaysia 🤙
I'd take the ZX-4rr just for the inline 4 'Screamer' sound! just LOVE the sound!!! lol😊❤
What was the track capability of both bikes? Which one could do a faster lap?????
It's sad the aftermarket is the only solution to get the ZX from 49 horsepower at @14200 rpm to a whopping 76 horsepower.
But with the same aftermarket help, the 8R makes 88 hp and bags more torque.
What mic setup are you both using? It sounds great. That cant be the mic attached to a gopro. Thx in advance
