    They've only unearthed a small part of the tomb. They soldiers were painted but the paint fades as soon as it's uncovered and they're trying to figure out ways to preserve the paints.

    Let me add a little more: These terracotta army are in three pits, but there are more than 200 pits located around the First Qin Emperor's Tomb - which is literally a mountain. It may takes 100+ more years to dig and restore all these pits.

    The terracotta warriors are only a small part of the tomb complex. The most interesting part is the part that has not been excavated yet -- the central mound that is a forested hill covering the main pyramid-like structure of the emperor's tomb. There is a square path all the way around the large central mound that you can walk, but there is a fence on the inside of the path blocking access to the mound itself.

      It's no surprise as they probably mold it after the biggest soldiers for intimidation factor, it most likely do not reflect the actual height of the average soldiers during those times, they are more likely a bodyguard for the emperor passing into the afterlife so they likely pick the larger stature soldiers to be molded.

    Just wondering what happened to all the super long bronze swords the thousand of solders used
    I see them in the movies depicting the fighting
    Yet I have seen only a few recovered from tombs
    Looks like they would be very difficult to fight with because of the weight of bronze
    A thin sword would break easily
    I can understand the “T” shaped heads they used on probably bamboo poles
    Would be more manageable in fighting for a period of tIme
    Maybe there were a lot of giants in that time
    Just thinking

    greek sculpture nothing to do with chinese sculpture. reason:
    1. greek statue made from carved stone full size body without any coloring, chinese terracotta made from clay, have hollow inside it, and painted with color.
    2. mtDNA found in xinjiang are tocharian people, they more close related to persian (iranian) rather than greek
    3. mummy in xinjiang are blonde and red haired resembble nordic features, while greek are mostly mediteranian feature with black hair and dark eyes. if european want to claim, they more related with germanic tribe rather than greek but germanic tribe at that time (221BC) still barbarian and have no art or sculpture like greek or chinese one.
    4. alexander the great never reach china, he reach afganistan, pakistan, and north-west india at maximum extent, never into modern day china's xinjiang province.

    • @noaccount4
      @noaccount4 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I make no claims of knowing whether Greek sculptures or sculptors had any influence or trained any of the craftsmen of the terracotta army, but I know this:
      1. Greek statues were made from a wide array of materials, including terracotta:
      i.imgur .com/Kcl6egv.jpg
      Terracotta figurine of Hermes, made 450B.C.
      Moreover the Greeks painted brilliant colours, to more calm lifelike colours on most of their statues - the paint just did not survive till today (with only the traces being able to be seen through UV light, as is the case with the terracotta army):
      harvard magazine.com/2007/11/dazzlers-html
      2. The mtDNA is European specific. Moreover, there existed no previous tradition for creating life-sized statues in China, only small figurines. Without centuries of practice and experimentation, the quickest way to making this leap in tradition is to have outside influence. This is what happened with Greco-Buddhist art, that even influenced China and Japan:
      en.wikipedia .org/wiki/Greco-Buddhist_art
      What is unique about the terracotta army theory, is not that it had Greek influence, but that it had Greek influence a lot earlier than expected.
      3. This is an anachronistic view of genetics, modern day Mediterranean phenotypes have been affected by mass migration events and two thousand years of mixture with Arab and Turkish genes, much in the same way that Ancient Egyptians are not the same as modern Egyptians, Ancient Persians are not the same as modern Iranians or Ancient Chinese same as modern Chinese.
      4. Alexander's conquests would bring the Hellenistic world up to China's border, maintained by the Greco-Bactrian Kingdom which traded extensively with the Han Empire
      en.wikipedia .org/wiki/Greco-Bactrian_Kingdom

    • @JinFX
      @JinFX 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The tomb was built before the Han. The Han created the silk road by military campaigns to the west. Greeks never reached even modern Chinese borders which are further west than Han.

      Alexander ruled the middle east and persia and parts of India a hundred years prior to Qin empire. So there is a likelihood that there was some knowledge and artistic transferrance. Moreover, the Greek Statues were all very well colored during their time and the Romans copied what they did.

    The latest theory, these terracotta army is to honor China First Empress Dowager Miyue. The army formation represent Chu kingdom which Miyue came from. The hairstyle doesn't represent Qin. The chariot was abandon after Miyue reform the military. Because of Miyue reform on military and politic, Emperor Qin Shi Huang able to conquer the whole china. He take 18 year to do that after Miyue dealth. Emperor Qin is afraid of after death, he will never do such project for himself.

    Greco-Buddhist art is the artistic manifestation of Greco-Buddhism, a cultural syncretism between the Classical Greek culture and Buddhism, which developed over a period of close to 1000 years in Central Asia, between the conquests of Alexander the Great in the 4th century BC, and the Islamic conquests of the 7th century AD. Greco-Buddhist art is characterized by the strong idealistic realism and sensuous description of Hellenistic art and the first representations of the Buddha in human form, which have helped define the artistic (and particularly, sculptural) canon for Buddhist art throughout the Asian continent up to the present. It is also a strong example of cultural syncretism between eastern and western traditions.
    The origins of Greco-Buddhist art are to be found in the Hellenistic Greco-Bactrian kingdom (250 BC- 130 BC), located in today’s Afghanistan, from which Hellenistic culture radiated into the Indian subcontinent with the establishment of the Indo-Greek kingdom (180 BC-10 BC). Under the Indo-Greeks and then the Kushans, the interaction of Greek and Buddhist culture flourished in the area of Gandhara, in today’s northern Pakistan, before spreading further into India, influencing the art of Mathura, and then the Hindu art of the Gupta empire, which was to extend to the rest of South-East Asia. The influence of Greco-Buddhist art also spread northward towards Central Asia, strongly affecting the art of the Tarim Basin, and ultimately the arts of China, Korea, and Japan.

      there isn't even any strong proof of contact between the 2 civilizations. those are just speculations aka NOT real history at this point. all that these people are saying is that there wasn't a history of large life sized statues of humans before this. so they inferred that it MAY have been influenced by the greeks. that's not history at all. pure speculation.
