Wheel Balancing: Why Do My Balanced Wheels Still Shake?

  • Wheel Balancing: On some cars, a traditional wheel balance can't fix steering wheel vibration caused by excessive wheel and tire runout and force variation. This video demonstrates wheel and tire runout and force variation. Learn how the Road Force wheel balancer by Hunter Engineering Company road tests the wheel as if it is rolling down the road to correct common tire vibration problems.

I got these 31" Kelly TSRs for my jeep last July and (other than the normal rumbling sound on smooth pavement) it was fine until a few months ago. Both my front tires had developed a helicopter like sound and the tire expert balances them and asked me to rotate them to opposite rear locations. So I'm hoping that the helicopter sound goes away when the tires start to wear evenly (as the tire expert said). They were slightly used when I purchased them and I only did about eight thousand kms on them before this helicopter sound started. The vibration that happens over 40kmph had me worries about the rear driveshaft but the sound and vibration go away if I put non off road tires in the back. And there is no steering vibration (other than the typical old jeep vibration)

Boy just this week I received a full front end alignment AND a new OEM Ford Ranger left side front truck rim with the already-existing "suspect" tire remounted same front left location again.
I wonder if rotating set of tires could have taken care of shaking over 55. But now after seeing this video regardless where suspect Tire relocated differently it still would have been that imperfect oval similar to flatspot.
Thankfully I live in a big city like Chicago where there is several tire shops within a mile.

    Regarding similar topic...
Back in 1987 when GM began promoting brushed aluminum rims we soon learned that outside weights pressed against this shiny Chrome alternative trapped road salt here in the northern states resulting in our Beauty mags pitting out.
As aluminum has a unique way of rusting even if coated with some clear coat protection back then.
My formula 350 SLP W6 Pontiac dealer was happy to put weights on the inside as alternative which seem to catch on because one rarely sees visible weights on common rims today.
Since similar to Corvette, anytime I rotated tires on my Firebird. Tires were not only mono directional but the original OEM rims had to stay in place and never could be rotated from front to back.
I guess I forgot to remind the first tire shop assuming that they already knew this.
But imagine their surprise when attempting to pull car out from the bay they could only smoke the rear tires while back rims brought forward stayed solidly locked.
Hello, I asked if you guys ever rotated low profile directional tires and stock rims on a modern corvette you big dummies!!! Thank God they didn't break anything.
Also I recall special weights attached along the center of the outside rim. And now that most rims house tire pressure sensors I wonder if engineers take that into consideration by pre balancing during rim Manufacturing or attach permanent weight that remains with life of rim.

The 16" wheels on 3rd generation Camaros and IROCs had different offsets front to rear. You had to mark Left front, Left rear tire then break them down and rotate the tires while leaving the wheels where they started. 16" tires were a big deal in the 80s. Upwards of $125 each. They also had 44PSI max air when most tires were 35. Aggressive driving, improper balance, low air, and failure to rotate every 3500-5000 miles resulted in ppl getting 20K miles out of a high dollar tire for the time. They also "cupped out" "rolled off the outside tread in hard cornering and were an all around bitch to fuck with. So I bought one! Cuz when u got them T-tops out hanging turns, smoking Dat killer, with the Alpine bumping 2-10s fuck it. If u don't understand buy a Prius. Also if you want to balance any tire correctly balance it ON THE CAR, dynamically. Any old school Tire Men remember?

It is certainly possible that these assemblies are suffering from one of the conditions that can be detected with a Road Force balancer: excessive rim runout, a tire that didn’t seat correctly, or a tire with excessive Road Force. These things can’t be detected with traditional balancers so I would certainly try a Hunter Road Force balancer if you haven't already. Lastly, you may need to contact the wheel manufacture if you believe the wheel is the source of the issue. Find a Road Force balancer here: www.hunter.com/gsp9700

I bought my car off dealer, new with after market 20X8 Valiente wheels and it has had a slight vibration since 2011. I have changed my wheels to Mazzis 20X8.5 recently and the vibration is still there, stronger and more annoying. Of course, the wheel shop where I bought my wheels does not want to hear it. Anyway of objectively checking for wheel unevenness, which i believe the problem lies within the wheels and not the tires per se.

Not all balance machines have road force. And there is alot more that can cause steering wheel vibration than just out of balance tires. For example bad CV axles, bad wheel bearings, front end out of alignment, or even bad struts or balljoints/tie rods.
