    You're a brilliant teacher. Don't worry about scaring people, your demonstration of gli' was EXACTLY what someone learning a foreign language needs. I don't understand why there are so many videos on TH-cam teaching the sound but never actually describing the articulation process behind it. You need to SEE how to pronounce something first in order to be able to emulate it.

    Thank you it was very helpful. I also show the tongue and teeth combinations to my husband because I teach him Hungarian and I think its very useful way to do and explain. Literally essential to learn the pronouncination.

    It’s the same sound in Portuguese as lh. In Spanish, some conservative dialects in Spain and the Andes pronounce ll like that.

    E' davvero difficile perche' il suono fonetico non esiste in inglese. I
    I appreciate your explanation compared to that of English-speaking people trying to explain the sound away. One needs to be born in Italy and be among Italian speaking people ( family) to master these sounds. The closest peoples to pronounce "gl" are the French and their double "L's", such as "fille".
    However, as you suggest, it's a matter of placing the tongue at the roof of the mouth to get the sound "gl"--- practice makes perferct, yet, no English-speaking person will ever achieve the perfect sound!!

      no. you have to press the tip of your tongue against the lower front teeth

    I listen to italian music and I hear some people use the y and some use the gli. It’s driving me nutsssss!!!! I have to say I do prefer a more southern italian accent!! Any tips?!

    This is the simple reason why my Italian doesn't improve, not knowing how to pronounce gli, even after seeing this video I have doubts, is there an equivalent sound in English or Spanish?

      Old Spanish (and maybe still conserved in some places around Spain and Latin America) has that sound for LL.

    Mi spiace contraddirla, ma la ragione per cui "gli" si legge come in glicine non e' perche' la "i" e' seguita da una consonante. Nella parola maglificio la "i" e' pur seguita da una consonante. Tuttavia, in quell caso "gli" si legge come in fogli, conigli e figli. Lo stesso vale per raccoglimento. Per contro, nella parola glioma (tumore benigno del sistema nervoso}, "gli" si legge come in glicine anche se la "i" e' seguita da una vocale e non da una consonante. Notera' che tutte le parole (non sono molte) che cominciano con "gli" si leggono allo stesso modo di glicine. L'unica eccezione a questa regola e' l'articolo "gli". Vi sono rarissimi casi dove "gli" e' pronunciato come in glicine anche se non e' situato all'inizio della parola. Questo e' il caso della parola anglicano. Ma cio' e' dovuto alla derivazione inglese della parola. Comunque, mi piacciono le sue lezioni che credo siano di grande aiuto a chi cerca di imparare l'italiano, e il suo inglese e' impeccabile.     So, basically, just pronounce the L while doing that thing with your tongue and teeth, which will add that ʎ-sound. I think that's the trick.
