    The letters “gl” in Italian have two different pronunciations, depending on the following letter.
    - They are pronounced /gl/ (like in “glad”) when they are followed by “a”, “o”, “u”, “e” (e.g. gladiatore, gloria, glutine, inglese)
    - They are pronounced /ʎ/ (the most similar sound in English is in the word “million”) when they are followed by “i” (e.g. figli, famiglia, coniglio, tagliare) but be careful, “gli” is pronounced /gli/:
    ● at the beginning of a word (e.g. glicemia)
    ● when they come after “n” (e.g. anglicano)
    ● in some exception words (e.g. negligente, nitroglicerina, geroglifico...)
    Watch the video to discover how to pronounce many Italian words correctly and to learn how to pronounce the sound/ʎ/ correctly!
    You can also use our videos to learn new vocabulary. Write down the words as you see them to build your vocabulary.

      I miei nonni, gli zii e mia madre parlavano il dialetto bergamasco. Great lesson! I know no Italian but I wanted to know how to pronounce the name of a movie "Gli Specialisti," a 1969 film with Johnny Halliday. I think I got close to the sound, but in doing so I irritated the back of my palate just above the uvula. And then I had a coughing spell. I will keep trying. Practice makes perfect.

  • @1rsalc
    @1rsalc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is a great video. Very detailed. Unfortunately, I'm not an Italian speaker, so my ear doesn't distinguish well the sounds.
    This is what I hear: gl is pronounced as "y", so I'm expecting figli to sound like "fi-yi":
    the first time you said it, I heard "fi-yi" (great! I'm getting this!!!), but the second time you said it I heard "fi-lyi"
    (Comparing this to English million. It is as if first I heard mi-y'n but then I heard mil-y'n)... a very tricky sound!!!
    In conclusion, you are a great teacher. I will continue watching all your A1 and higher level videos...
    I just can't control the sounds that my untrained ears hear :-)
    Pronouncing it is very difficult for me. It seems like the sides of my tongue control the "phantom" L sound: sometimes it's there, sometimes it isn't.

    You mentioned the 3 exception of gli sound at the beginning of a word should be pronounced like a hard g, but the double object pronouns like gliele, glielo,gliela,gliene,gliela, - the g is not pronounced even though it is at the beginning. Why is that? Is that just an exception to the exception that when gli is at the beginning it should be pronounced as a hard g.

    • @PassioneItaliana
      @PassioneItaliana  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ciao Adam! In the double pronouns (glielo, gliela, ecc..) we don't pronounce the hard "g" because it needs to include the indirect pronoun "gli" with its own correct pronunciation. I hope it makes sense 😀
