Aussie Dave here Scott, your trident maples are all broom style, ever thought about making branch pad's to show the beautiful trunk 🤔. Great information and good job..🤗

Just found your site, watched a few now back to back, excellent content. I got into bonsai in the 90's and I've got a couple left, but still find the art fascinating. Thank you. Simon 👍✌🇬🇧

Great information for people in South Africa as well, the Australian bonsai artists give us the proper times to do our processes/tasks to the trees.

Another quality informative video. Sure to come back to it again and again. Although I haven’t maples yet, they are about to enter my collection

    Awesome video 👏🏽
Although I don't have Maples, this was very informative..
    I have Chinese Holly.. Ficus...Portulacaria Afra's, & a Fuji Cherry..
I'm in Florida(USA) which is a Tropical environment..
Would that, influence you at all as far as defoliating any of these?
All my Trees are Strong, and I've never thought about defoliating any of them..but, was just curious how your Climate would effect someone defoliating their Trees..
    New subscriber..
Looking forward to more of these videos..

Thanks Damon. It's very common for me to defoliate my ficus. My general pattern is a complete defoliation every 2 years approx and partial in between. The strength of the tree should dictate whether you do it or not. Maybe you could just remove the largest leaves on you ficus and see the result?

      @@BonsaiMatsu Appreciate those Thoughts...
I DO remove larger leaves from time to time, & have never had any issues...
The tree is Super strong already... I asked the question, just kindof wondering what(if any) benefit(s) I'd get from defoliating...
I'm gonna think about it some...As are most things in Bonsai; there's no rush..
      lol
Thanks so much for the Reply...
      I'll keep watching going forward...
      Very informative
      👍🏽

I understand that we live in different growing zones……. I’m in zone 8b. I’m just curious to how much sun (direct or indirect specific) do u give your Japanese maples and trident maples? I have heard everything from 2-4hrs of direct sun then dappled shade to 6-8hrs of direct sun. All of your maples look fantastic and healthy, no scorching or weak growth. I’m about 3yrs into my life long passion of bonsai!! I love your podcast, Bonsai Stuff!! It’s AWESOME!! Any and info on how much sun you give your maples will be hugely appreciated! Take care and HAPPY BONSAI!!

Thank you so much! I’ll cover this in a future podcast for you too. Some get full sun, others similar to what you have described. You need to ensure your root system is strong and efficient and water when needed too.

Thanks, Scott!! I seriously appreciate you’re podcast, Bonsai Stuff. I listen to it while at work, it helps the time pass faster. I think I’ve listened to every episode at least 10 times!! You do a great job, keep it up!! I bet you have enough knowledge to write a book on bonsai. I’d buy it if you ever do! I’m a big fan! If you ever visit Washington state in the United States, you are welcome to stay at my house. I live only about 15mins from the Pacific Bonsai Museum, which is fantastic by the way!! Take care and HAPPY BONSAI, Scott!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Scott!, big fan of the podcast, came to check your TH-cam channel.
A question regarding defolioation, would you alter your fertilisation at all after defoliating, reduce it or keep it consistent to encourage new growth?
    Thanks!

Thanks Sam! It really depends on the stage of development. If it’s a very refined tree then no fertilizer but if it’s developing still then a mid dose will be fine.
