Thank you Jerome (Bonsai Supply) for taking the time to discuss defoliation. Not a topic I've seen much of online (until now) and it will really help me with my orchard (40+ trees). Most of my collection is deciduous (Pear, Cherry, Maple, Ash, Hawthorne, Hazelnut, etc.), with a Cypress and Arborvitae to round it out. Thank you and good luck!
Came across your videos when I was searching for tips on trimming a very large jade plant that I was given. After watching many of your videos I’ve decided this jade plant would make a wonderful bonsai. Just ordered the bonsai soil from your website. Thank you for videos.
Hi, just got a small Ficus Ginseng, double trunk it is 37cm tall and the leaves look big for the size of the tree. Around 1.5 to 2inch. I would like smaller leaves around 2cm or so. I am wondering if the process you show is the same or is it different with this variety? good video packed with info Thanks
Great info, presentation and enthusiasm Jerome, thanks! One thing, it’s quite hard to see the tree with your sign behind the tree. If u move the tree to the side, we will be able to see both the tree and your sign easily. Thanks Neil from New Zealand.
Hello Jerome, Thanks for this video and your teaching. But because of the advert behind the hibiscus it was hard to see the tree and what happened with it. Can you shift it to the side? Martin
Jerome please show us Lantana, golden drop tree and ornamental pepper bonsai please .... these are the tropicals I'm working with in ohio I also have normal 3 tropical hibiscus ... that started as one .... but was actually 3. Thanks for the tips
I’ve been doing Bonsais for 3 years, and this has a an area I knew nothing about… I’ve looked at many videos on this subject, and this has explained it so clearly, thank you 🙏. I have many broad leaf trees ( between big in the UK they’re common) , and this video has given me the knowledge to tackle some of my oaks, Lime , beech and hazels . It’s also stopped me from making some bad errors in trying to defoliate younger trees that won’t handle it . Keep up the great work and videos 😊👍
Hi Jerome! Very informative video. I’m just starting to learn about Bonsai and your videos are a lot of help. I just defoliated my Bignay tree (Antidesma Bunius) and noticed some insects. Is it okay to apply pesticide right after defoliation?
I enjoy watching your very informative videos and share with others. That sea Hibiscus is so beautiful. Love that it has variegated leafs! What about when it’s stikk a young tree with thin bark. Do you allow it just to grow before pruning leaves? How do you encourage thickening of bark?
Use a basket instead of pot. Layer it with thin cloth and use porous medium such as moss, cocopeat, pumice stones and a bit of leaf compost and manure. Shower the plant regularly. Do not allow water to stand around the roots. Within a month you can see beautiful nebari forming. Keep it that way for atleast 6 months so that roots dont break while you repot the plant. Give it a nice trim approx the size of new pot in which you are planning to transfer. Also defoliate the plant before you trim roots so that it survives the stress.
You need to develop patience. Since roots are sprouting, its a positive sign. Shoots will come out later. It would be better to cover the thing with plastic bag so that moisture is preserved. The first thing to be done to a bonsai material is to develop roots, then trunks, lastly concentrate on branches.
Hey Jerome, love your vids, man, I was wondering if you do anything with privets. I've had one I took out of my brother's yard in Richmond, Va like 22 yrs ago, but , I'd love to sere what you do with a privet. I was recently back there and brought back with me 2 more larger ones with multiple trunks and have no idea what I'm going to do with them.
Gday from australia....im thinking about adding branches to the caudex on my ademium....cutting a v section into it and the branch....do u think that would work
I have a large ‘dug’ fig which I have left for a few years after initial cutback. It is badly in need of a repot. It is Spring here in Australia and I live in temperate/subtropical zone. My dilemma...do I repot AND defoliate (very large leaves and lots of new terminal buds), or should I leave the defoliation for a few weeks?
Patricia Wright hi Patricia, always do both at the same time defoliate and repot. Tropical trees such as your fog are repotted and defoliated in the middle of the summer.
Excellent video as always. Heres two questions. Do you have any fukien tea trees? Why dont many bonsai professionals have any fukien teas? I have a 2 and i love them. They do great in and out doors. I love the year round small white flowers!
Mark here the 3in1 insect spray is it safe for all trees Tropicals, & outside I tried it on my Ficus Willow tree and it seemed to turn some of the leaves yellow I bought the insect spray that wasn't mixed so I mixed it with water as it said on the bottle still turned some of the leaves yellow ?
Hey Carmie, the Bayer 3in1 is completely safe! If the leaves are turning yellow after application that means that you had insects on those leaves and now the died. You probably had white flies
Man, i had two beautiful little walnut seedlings i found growing in an old walnut pile we forgot about in our yard and i put them in pots. One of them started to get some type of fungal or bacterial infection and started dropping its leaves. On top of that, no matter where i moved it to, the dark neighborhood cat kept knocking it down or over and i had to keep repotting it. Finally i brought it indoors and bought lighting as there is none inside. It started growing back its leaves but they were smaller. With the smaller leaves along with the way it was growing sideways made it look like a mini bonsai tree. I wasnt going for bonsai and just want some walnuts.lol but it was too perfect. Unfortunately, it has had enough stress i suppose as it has dropped its leaves again for the third time and so far no growth at all coming baxk. So i believe its done for. So sad as i got so inspired and interested in bonsai now. My other seedling is growing too good to mess with and none of the other walnuts are viable to grow anything. So i dont want to chance any type of stress. But i am determined to give it a shot with a wisteria sapling i have. It too is perfect shape with a slight lean to it and evem branching out making it look like a miniature mature tree. If it werent for the leaves being somewhat normal size that is.lol
I’ve regularly heard that defoliation should only be carried out on a happy and healthy tree and only once every 2 years or so. Never heard someone say they defoliate 3 times a year!
Depends on the type of plant you are working with. Defoliation encourages growth, so it must be carried out frequently but you must have knowledge when the plant needs defoliation and when not. Hint: Defoliate and prune just before growing season, when the plant is dormant.
Hi! We never fertilize after defoliation. We wait until the new growth has hardened after defoliation, trim the tree back and then start to fertilize again.
@@WeareTheBonsaiSupply Glad I asked , and thanks for the great channel and reply! Can you touch a little on reasons why to wait until new growth had completely hardened, I had thought you wait until new growth starts to comes out and then fertilize? But I will wait until my tree has full canopy 👍
Hey Fred, are you referring to the defoliation? You can defoliate your tree as soon as the night temperatures are steady above 70 degrees but I wouldn't do it past September.
While the plant is small, you need to keep atleast 3 leaves and cut the rest. Let the plant grow atleast a feet long before you plant to do something on it. I'm just sharing my experience. I have various ficus bonsai at home started from seedlings as well as cuttings. Seedlings are far stubborn to die easily. Cuttings are weak and have less lifespan, so you need to be more careful.
Thank you for the video but can you be aware that your sign in the back is in conflict with the tree's structure ? During your video I had the urge to slide the hibiscus to the viewers right so that tree was in front of the black background.A suggestion and relief for the viewers eyes. Thanks

Got your vedio just now..thanks for your sharing..is it good to cut the leaf in the month may or june..
depending on your climate, but may june is good
@@WeareTheBonsaiSupply Thank you for replying..love your vedio and presentation..
Which leaves do you not remove? Just the ones at the tips of the branches?
Yes. If you remove that, the plant stops growing. Never prune young branches, allow them to grow and mature. Then more branches would grow from it.
My hibiscus from cuttings has been more than 2 weeks old now and I can see a lot of roots coming out but I have not seen any shoots sprouting out yet?
Hey Marc, It take time for the cutting to re-sprout. give it lots of heat and water and time

Is this method used on conifers, too?

Thanks Charles. It does.
Hey Donna, Charles is correct, don't use defoliation techniques on Conifers or you will kill them.
Did you say you defoliate your ficus 4 times a year?
If I am in the ramification stage yes
Ah defoliation I remember reading about it as a beginner and did it back to back with a little ficus I grew via cutting the poor thing died on round 3
