No of Mux = No of inputs in Register(Bits of Register)

now the mux will be of 8x1 type

Yes. It depends on 2^? .means in 8×1 .so 8 could be also represent in 2^³.it means 3 selection lines will be taken. Depends on bit.

That kind of "slip of tongue" is common during teaching.
Isn't it correct? For 16 bit register we will need 16 multiplexers.
