- Getting my masters degree in math was very rewarding - but there was some stuff I had wished I knew! Here are the things I wish I knew before I did my masters in math.

This is very interesting sir. 70% passing mark is very high. Being an electrical engineer myself and business minded i do love math so much especially calculus which use a lot in engineering problems.
I just got finished with differential equations class and I also love math/calculus. I was wondering what type of problems in engineering would you solve using calculus?
@@victorhernandez-eg7wp anything that varies with time will involve calculus and differential equations. No matter the engineering discipline. EE in particular will use ODE, PDE and lots of vector calculus.

Could you tell me mathematics courses you had in your bachelor degree.... I had Bsc (program) where mostly our college decide what courses you study now after completing my bachelor's I'm self studying mathematics so I just wanted to know what's mathematics major study in their courses.
@Frederik Leones Diff eq is an elective for you? Lucky since that is my least favorite math class :(
For my math degree, the required classes are: Calculus 1-3, linear algebra, diff eq, PDEs, analysis, abstract algebra (our intro proofs class too), intro to research, and then 4 math classes of our choice (then 3 other classes that had to be either math, statistics, or computer science). For the 3 other classes, I chose CS classes because I am dual-degreeing. For my other 4 math classes I am choosing/have chosen: combinatorics, number theory, linear algebra II, cryptography

Community colleges have the same type of atmosphere, it sounds like. I'm a junior in high school taking all my classes at a college and it really surprised me that I was 16 but still treated like an adult in my diff eq class. I'll graduate from the college next fall and will probably miss it because my only option is to transfer to a university. I don't think I can have an AA degree and still attend high school classes for a semester. Hopefully my professor for real analysis or whatever I take next is just as great as my calc 1 through 3 + diff eq professor. I know I'm still young, but you and several others have convinced me that I was dreaming of joining a PhD program for the wrong reasons and that a masters is probably better suited for me.

How crucial is it to know how to use LaTex before enrolling in a Master's Degree program in Math?
I never learned LaTex until after I finished my Masters. It really depends on your specific program. Cheers.
It’s not hard at all. Just takes a bit of time to get used to it.
I have a similar experience with professors except as an undergraduate, I accidentally missed a final and the professor let me take it anyway, and a lot of my professors (math mostly, bio professors not as much) ask us to call them by their first name and tend to be pretty friendly and willing to take personal stuff into account
Edit: for math majors at my university anything below a C- is considered failing for any math courses for your math major while classes for a biology majors only need a C average across all of their biology related courses meaning that you could get a D in a course or two if your average was still a C
Oh my goodness. I'm so jealous. For my undergrad bio major, I absolutely could not make anything less than 70% in any class. I failed a required course because I made a D in it, and that was only because my lab grade brought me down. I made straight Cs on the tests, but the lab reports required were terrible. (That university thought everybody needed to be prepared for med school. Quite seriously.)
That being said, it is absolutely the same for my undergrad math major at a different university.
I think Ds almost shouldn't exist or should always be failing. 60% is too low of a standard IMO.

I'm not sure about a math Master's program, but more are starting to come out with a GRE exam is not required which is nice!
Nice to know! Many masters at least don't require the subject test GRE.

I got my BA in Economics and I'm applying for my MS in math. i didnt take a lot of math in undergrad , what subject should i brush up on to get prepared?
I don't know your background but I think you should've already took 2 calculus classes. You need to take calculus 3, or multivariable calculus.
It really depends on your master's program and your interests after that, what courses are you going to take in your master's program?

Sir, did you do a course based masters or thesis based? It seems like you a thesis based that helps in pursuing a PhD in future. Could you help with some info on the type of master thesis and what is expected by universities. I am a Mechanical Engineer looking to take this route.
PhD in Civil Engineering here, we also had courses that were offered every 1½ or 2 years, even very practical/professional oriented courses, so that is not only a thing on the pure sciences, it just has to do with how graduate programs work, professors have many administrative assignments we do not realize, plus research commitments and they end up teaching only one or two courses per year.
I have found education after high school to be sort of distressing. Education seems to be an industry that can't back the product it produces. Too many kids coming out with $200K in debt and not finding jobs. Lots of young men aren't even attending college now. I got a bs and masters in math in the 1980s. Never could find a job unless I taught, so I understood why my professors were only able to teach. I ended up graduating from HVAC trade school during the 1990s recession after working as an assembler for years. Unfortunately, they were laying off even experienced guys back then. I think the average age in the trade now is 56 years . I ended up learning to fix printers on the job. Most recently took a bunch of night courses in mechanical engineering, but covid and a sick parent stopped that. Never lost my love of learning new stuff yet. Learning machine learning now.
While you are still a student, join a Mathematics Professional Society such as: American Mathematical Society (AMS) or the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM).
Should I be worrying about this stuff in my second year in high-school

Most professional societies recruit for their Student Chapters in college, but there's no reason not to start one at your high school.

Great channel. Love your videos. So I graduated with a Bachelors of Mathematics two years ago and I still haven't found a job using my degree. I wouldn't mind going to grad school for a masters in math but I'm concerned I will have the same issue I have now. I spent thousands of dollars on schooling and I have little way of paying it back. This is mainly because employers want experience and I have none besides school. Any advice? Is it easier to find jobs with a masters degree but still having no work experience?
A common mistake people make is thinking a Masters Degree will get you employed.... False. Work Experience trumps Education in today's world, as well as connections...cough cough Linkedin. I suggest looking for Internships and Staffing Agencies in the Industry you want to work in.
Congrats on your math degree! I feel your pain and was in a similar situation but don't know if I can fully answer your question. Personally I had a very specific reason to go to grad school (I wanted to teach math). Maybe one thing you could do is figure out exactly what job you want, and then work backwards from there to see what steps are needed. Alternatively you could try grad school for a bit and see how it goes (can you work and go to school at the same time?). These are just my thoughts at this moment, I wish you the best of luck!

It's funny you say that schools responded in mere weeks. I applied to some math masters programs over 170 days ago and still haven't heard back. Could you share what your GRE and GPA were? With a 318 and 3.75 I feel as if I should have heard back from them by now.
It really depends on the school and the time of year you apply. I don't usually share my stats - I think it was more just the particular school I applied to that was speedy in reply. I hope you hear soon!

@@Andrew-ez9ft Most top programs prefer 3.5 GPA and above. You can offset a slightly lower gpa with good letters of rec and good research experience.

Israeli pretty much anything you want to be honest. You’ll be more easily hired by tech related jobs but you could still go to law school, med school, etc. since they like to see hard science and math majors even with slightly lower gpas
A math degree in industry isn’t directly applicable most of the time but it shows you’re smart and can work hard which is often enough to get your foot in the door

Uh, 85% or higher is a high distinction. Well, that's been the case in all four degrees I've completed at three institutions.

I was reading the wikipedia page of Steven Hawking. He apparently wanted to study math in college in his 20s, but his father told him not to because there were no jobs in the field. His father gave him good advice.
