However lock washers are a thing of the past, they’ve been disproven by something called “breaking force”. Simply put using a torque wrench to get a nut off with or without a lock washer requires the same amount of breaking force, therefor the washer is being used for nothing more than surface area tension... at that point you may as well just use a larger washer to gain surface area tension. In these type of situations there’s serrated flange nuts. I’m an industrial technician, we specialize in retro fitting parts already made to our specific need - with that is all types of unorthodox mounting methods. I use nothing but serrated flange nuts and have never have a problem, easily up to 1500 installed by now. In situations like this where it’s tricky to get leverage on both sides they will “zip” themselves tight without the need of holding both sides with a tool. Just wanted to spread the word as they’re not popular for some reason, but but once you start using them you’ll never look back.
Only use stainless bolts in a boat. If you ever have to take it apart again you'll know why. Have the same controller in a 2000 VIP and found out that set screw does not need to be removed but a lot of controllers they do. Good video tho on taking this thing apart, I had to ask a mechanic and he showed me the trick of finding that bolt...
hey there....i have 92 johnson 175 2 stk.......got the same problem ....those wood screws are way loose. the shop told me to replace them like you did... nice video. now i know how to do it
Had the exact same issue. Once back together it will not go into reverse without pushing the black button. Forward fine but won't go backwards. In your video it looks like you tried putting it in reverse and it would not go also. How did you fix this ?
Hey bro, got a question. Would you happen to know how the heck to remove the inside control box to replace the shifter cable on that boat. Working on the same boat and apperently you have to be a magician. Lol. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Sorry man. I’d have to see it and it’s been a minute since I had this ranger, but thankfully I never had to deal with cable replacement. Figuring out this lever was painful so I can only imagine what your going through. Best of luck.
Nice video. Question, how does the kill switch work? I bought a bassboat with the same shifter you have. I cant figure out how to put the key in and use it? I have that cord with a bunch of keys for different levers and I cant figure it out? So I run without the kill switch engaged... the small lever just stays on the run position.
Mine has just a toggle switch on the throttle...the gray switch bottom left looking at it in the video. The wrist strap has a plastic loop and the switch holds it on when it's in the run position. When you pull the strap it pulls the switch too the off position. Hope that helps.
Should have left the words in blue at 5:03 on long enough to read! And now I need to find a video that shows how to separate the outer part from the main body of the control. Mine's sandwiching an upholstered panel that needs to be redone.
FYI, you don't have to remove the small set screw first. As a matter of fact, you shouldn't do anything with it since it is just the throttle friction adjustment and has nothing to do with removing the handle or cover plate. It has an access hole to allow adjustment of the friction without removing anything.
Gary Washer Hey gary, I took my 3000 shifter off to repair the trim and put it back on and now it’s out of adjustment and it’s hard to find a neutral any tips on getting this adjusted properly
I would start at your closest Ranger dealer. I tried calling dealers that weren't authorized ranger dealers and they could not help. It's a pain especially if your closest dealer is an hour plus away. Good luck.

do u have to replace the whole if the throttle button goes , it wont go back into gear
Mine acts backwards. Just got the boat never ran it. All the way forward is actually neutral
