Court, I can always count on you to provide a thorough review when I'm considering a purchasing a particular ebike. Thanks for posting this review! Keep up the great work! *
I took the Drop model for a short test ride yesterday. Here's some pros and cons: 1. The bike looks very nice in person. Looks well made (*with one exception). 2. It has a very nice ride and handles very well. 3. The motor is a beast. The bike I rode was de-restricted, and I was able to hit 48kph (29mph) on the flats pedaling hard. In the top power level I was a able to cruise along at 40kph (25mph) with regular pedaling. Hills disappear on this bike. 4. I noticed, every time I stopped pedaling, a clunk from the motor. I could also feel it through the pedals. It felt like something was disconnecting each time the motor stopped applying power. Court, did you notice this? 5. *Here's the one exception-Dost has to make a cover for the cable that runs under the motor. This exposed cable looks like crap. Come on Dost, how much effort is needed to come up with a plastic cover? It detracts from an otherwise very well made ebike. 6. If you buy this bike spring for the extra battery. This bike almost makes you ride fast, but with those higher speeds you'll also go through the battery quickly. The second battery should give you a decent riding range even at higher cruising speeds. Overall impression: My wife and I both really like this bike. I'm not sure I'd buy one, but it's on the top three list for my wife.
@@LordWinter For me, I would get the Dost because it has a throttle. None of the Bosch, Brose, or Yamaha motored ebikes that I have seen have a throttle. I like to use my own strength when I ride, but juuuust sometimes, I use the throttle to give me a slight boost to catch up with my friends and then release the throttle to continue on pure pedaling. *
I think what Joe Q. Public is going to mainly look at (and balk at) is the price point of almost $3K for a bike that doesn't really bring anything new to the table. I really question putting the Bafang BBS02 motor in a brand new 2020 release. Why not the BBSHD or a Bosch or Yamaha offering? The BBS02 is a product nearing the end of it's production life-cycle and using that as a focus-point makes the bike seem dated right out of the gates. Another BIG miss for Dost here is not incorporating torque sensing. I've been following developments before the website reveal date and saw Sam fielding comment after comment about why no torque sensor on a $3K bike. Anyone who is really into e-bikes is not going to be happy with just cadence sensing for this money.
@Dave Heighway Yep the BBS02 is a great choice of motor. That being said I totally agree with C.T. about lack of torque sensor... Anyone who has ridden torque sensor mid-drive knows its a game changer, I'd never go back to cadence only no matter what else the bike is packing.

I'm wondering if long term implications have been thought out putting a casing around the BBS02? They can generate a lot of heat and many in the ebike hobbyist community keep the power limited because the heat dissipation even in a non-enclosed partially finned stock case can become a problem. I've programmed the amperage draw to 18, down from 25 (120 nm) just to be comfortable riding on warm days.

Initial quality on all Ebikes should have high standards out the gate. Its the long-term reliability reports i want to know about. Considering this is a new bike/1st gen I will go with another company that has established customer service and long term reviews just like purchasing a vehicle.

Am currently doing some heavy research for what maybe could be an ebike purchase. This would be my first ever ebike, and I really want it to be a quality first impression. This bike has probably jumped to the #1 spot as a choice. Thank you for the extremely comprehensive and highly informational review!!
Well done - a few criticisms if I may: Why didn't Dost use the current Bafang M600 (or equivalent) motor? Why design a new, custom framed bike around the 5-year old, technically obsolete Bafang BBS02 motor? Additionally, while the dual battery option is currently rare in the ebike world, charging much more that the current, introductory price for a 10AH battery is, well, greedy. For a 17AH battery, sure.
Oh come on! That money buys you lots of options. It's a speed pedelec, has a dual battery option, the mid-drive is more efficient and a much better climber than a gearless hub motor on the RadCity, it can handle more weight on the bike and rear rack... but no front racks, longer delivery time from what I'm seeing, and it's a newer semi-unproven company. I don't see this as an apples to apples comparison, the bikes are very different, and each do a lot of things right ;)
@@ElectricBikeReview The Rover would be a better comparison. Still very different bikes but I think the OP's point is that is this really worth twice the purchase price?
@@ElectricBikeReview I agree with Court. Great features and quality choices. Today's ebike market is giving us a lot of choices. Dost Kope is definitely on my short list. BTW as a daily commuter rider I too like the look too.
CUWATRA, UTILITY IS MY TRUCK, I can afford more than just a bike for transportation. I ride a bike to ride a bike, not go to bingo. Im saying ITS UGLY! I'm three and a half minutes in and I'm going to be critical. You seem to really like the design and talk about their mantra but it's a little disingenuous when you keep mentioning things as "optional." And it's not your fault.
@Dave Heighway Thank you Dave. I like all those extras! I got my first ebike last November. A Rad City. It's ok. I get wanting to keep costs down. I want my next bike to be better equipped. Just read threads on the Rad Facebook pages. I have so many ideas!

Wow! These bikes, the DROP as well as the KOPE, is a winner. If only they can clean up those ugly welds.
What happened to the full suspension model... I think it was going to be called the "Fate"?
Hi Mike! I think that one is launching later in the year. I didn't get to see or test ride it during my visit. I'm super excited for that bike and plan on returning for another review. And yeah, it is called the FATE ;)
@@ElectricBikeReview Are they going to make a larger Frame for the taller among us ? 4 inches taller then you : It looks like the size is about Perfect for you : NICE BIKE
@Dave Heighway Thx. Dave!!! You answered my question as I'm six three and change. Cool you guys are local!!! Good luck to you and Dost!!! 🇨🇦
Seems like Ride1UP 700 is a better value although not a mid drive, they seem very similar in design.
Put the Bafang Ultra in it for the torque sensing and I'll buy it and not winge about the added price.
Battery is waterproof?
Throttle on a mid drive motor...nice.
Yes indeed ;)
That bulky cable harness out front though….
Does this bike have the ability to be set up for Optional 33+ mph in Off Road Mode)
YES
Court is this the best long distance touring ebike on the market ??
Is that the real price?
Maybe $1.8K is a Freudian slip for the "universal service fee" lol
Oh man, that's hilarious! No, I get less than $1.8k for my review fees. Regarding the price, I made a mistake in my haste to publish both bikes simultaneously and do a live premiere chat session. It's actually $2,799 sorry!
Initial quality on all Ebikes should have high standards out the gate. Its the long-term reliability reports i want to know about. Considering this is a new bike/1st gen I will go with another company that has established customer service and long term reviews just like purchasing a vehicle.
Nice that they have a 2 year warranty though!
Subtitle shows $1K less.
Yep that got me as well. Reloaded the page and now shows correct price. Was getting ready to look for the website and order asap. Edit: new page shows 2.8k, premiere still shows 1.8k .
Yeah, I had a typo because the team had asked me to publish both bikes today at 11am PST for their launch and I ran this as a premiere with live chats... just doing too much at once, sorry! The real price of DROP and KOPE is $2,799
Cadence sensor? Torque sensor?
I am not see a torque sensor ... how is the pedal assist ??
Am currently doing some heavy research for what maybe could be an ebike purchase. This would be my first ever ebike, and I really want it to be a quality first impression.
This bike has probably jumped to the #1 spot as a choice.
Thank you for the extremely comprehensive and highly informational review!!

Did you go with this one?
I'm thinking about choosing it,,, if they will ship to Alaska,,, most of these ebikes can't be shipped here.

Review the new Ebike from aventon , the LEVEL please
Well done - a few criticisms if I may:
Why didn't Dost use the current Bafang M600 (or equivalent) motor? Why design a new, custom framed bike around the 5-year old, technically obsolete Bafang BBS02 motor?
Additionally, while the dual battery option is currently rare in the ebike world, charging much more that the current, introductory price for a 10AH battery is, well, greedy. For a 17AH battery, sure.
it is a tried and true motor. They went with reliability as opposed to the latest untested option.
And not a stupid-cheap 7 speed drivetrain
a stupid-cheap 9 speed instead?
Nice review but it's not a $1k improvement over a RAD.
@@-C.T.-Anything that's reliable and mid drive is better than a hub motor system. Instant power not latent like a hub motor. First hand experience
Oh, throttle, no not for me.
OMG Plus Tax here rite at $3K I could buy Two Rad Power Bikes for that .
Look at Ariel Rider C-class if you want a similar bike that's more affordable, but considerably uglier.
@@milesmccall2301 This is basically the ride1up 700 but with a mid drive and a 2nd battery that’s optional
That's a good deal for $1.8k
It was a typo mistake, I'm sorry! Just fixed it, the price is $2,799
@@ElectricBikeReview But it should be $1800 if DOST really plans on selling many. Too much $$ IMO.
Do a burnout
Racks and fenders make it look like a Grandpa bike
Dumb comment if ever I heard one. It's called UTILITY, friend.
CUWATRA, UTILITY IS MY TRUCK, I can afford more than just a bike for transportation. I ride a bike to ride a bike, not go to bingo. Im saying ITS UGLY! The Evelo Aries Mid drive looks better, the Specialized Turbo Levo looks better, no Old Man fenders that barely work, no Grandma rack. Its like a Honda Goldwing compared to a Kawasaki H2, the Kawasaki is sexy and gets girls, the Goldwing gets you laughed at.
Oh, the big goofy mirror is ugly too
@@rovidbouski4022 But enough about you...big and goofy.
Cuwatra, you got that 1/2 right. Im a big dude, but most people wouldnt call me goofy, at least not to my face.
Hopefully with more goodies included. So many times it's hit and miss in extras purchased elsewhere. Imagine selling one with a number of exceptional extras. I was literally thinking how I'd love to shoot a video review (I'm a pro photographer) of an ebike that has some better components along with most of the accessories most people love. Just read threads on the Rad Facebook pages. I have so many ideas!
@Dave Heighway Thank you!
@Dave Heighway...thanks. I appreciate that... especially as a budget-minded buyer. If I can grow the budget, I'd like those extra gear and equipment but it's nice to know if the budget gets tight that they are just optional
@Dave Heighway

Hey do you guys ship to Alaska ???
🟥
@@Zebrajellyfishphotoget a mid drive motor bike next time. Way more natural feel and instant volts instead of latent power like hub motor bikes
Dost doesn't honor the hassle free policy. Stay away!
These are not Specialized or Trek Quality Poor body fit gaps no painted battery cover such eye sore crazy hanging wires noisy china motor terrible welds Bike looks like the others that you send away for
One size does not fit all.
I don't like these bikes... They charge too much for them. I don't like the way they look. Also I don't like the handlebars... The whole bike doesn't look comfortable.
Cool. What's your favorite ebike right now!
Right. Not being affordable for me right now doesn't make be grumpy about Dost. And those handle bars are adjustable!!! Rule! Meantime, happy trails.
No thanks
Can the fenders be removed easily?
