He graduated from high school a valedictorian, and then got a Bachelors degree in Biology, a Masters degree in molecular biology, and then, after getting famous in the Offspring, he took some time off from the band to get a Ph.D. in molecular biology. Holland was a doctoral student at the Laboratory of Viral Oncology and Proteomics Research, at the Keck School of Medicine, and he has published papers about HIV.
At Aftershock 2021 he played it slow and sad. Times have changed and instead of lighters people had their cellphone flashlights on. It might be available on TH-cam if you look for it.

The Offspring have so many great songs. What I love about punk is the juxtaposition between the music and the lyrics. on the surface, it sounds fast and positive but it nearly always dark and unsettling. Take a song like Last Caress by The Misfits (horror punk) - it sounds so upbeat and happy that for a lot of people it totally flies under the radar of how twisted it is. The Ramones are also a must listen if you guys are diving into this genre. They are legends.

This song is such a universal appliance to every generation. This was released in the late 1990s and I've experienced the same things mentioned in the song today. Being Class of 2020, we didn't have a proper graduation not did we even really finish school. During that time, I had enough time to get my things together and planned to move to Arizona from Washington for Audio Engineering school. It went pretty well for me, a few hiccups but it was generally alright. I then moved to LA to start my internship. After I finished that, I felt rather successful in my career and that it was going somewhere. When I went back home to Washington for a visit, however, I noticed how grey the city felt. I attempted to get in contact with a bunch of my friends, but only a few responded and they told me of many of then that had fallen info obscurity, a few started doing drugs, and a couple committed suicide, one of them was one of my closest friends who was the guitarist in my first band from Middle school. This shit is real and when I heard this song after my trip, I almost cried over how accurate it was that I almost crashed my car while listening and tearing up.

Man this song hits with me. On my street there were 10-15 kids who all grew up hanging out. Up through high school. Now id say half of them have passed away. Its crazy how growing up we just accept the losses as they come. And im not that old at just 37.
The video for this track is totally worth checking out as well. It's artistic, clever, poignant, ugly and beautiful all at the same time, and it's probably one of my favourite music videos I've seen.

I think this song is more about a good neighborhood turned bad. “When we were young the future was so bright / The old neighborhood was so alive / and every kid on the whole damn street / was gonna make it big in every beat” but the very next segment is “Now the neighborhood’s cracked and torn / the kids are grown up but their lives are worn / how can one little street / swallow so many lives”. And then the next verse is where they talk about suicide, ODs, etc. So, I don’t know. Some kids from a decent neighborhood who got involved with the wrong people, and went down the wrong paths. Got addicted to drugs, and just did a bunch of generally “live fast” shit without any care for the future or any guidance from anyone to prepare them for the real world. Maybe their parents just weren’t around enough. Maybe it was just one “bad apple” that got into drugs and sucked everyone else in. Or maybe the town they lived in just went downhill altogether. It’s hard to say. But the general message, I think, is that, yeah, they just weren’t prepared for the real world when the time came to go out there, so they just made a bunch of bad decisions because they didn’t know what the good decisions were. It’s happening more and more often as time goes on. No one knows how to raise children anymore. Sad as fuck.
And some people should flat out never have children. But yea.. growing up hits you and you look back and see how everyone's lives changed when it was all so simple when you were a kid. I don't personally know anyone who's overdosed, but know like 6 people around my highschool days that committed suicide. I think someone having a kid in highschool is pretty much common in every highschool... But my school was considered good, now that I'm 32, they've had gang fights, knives brought to school, someone set off legit smoke bombs inside the school.. The kids are definitely not alright..
The Offspring just like Green Day, Blink-182 and all the others you mentioned is pop punk. The classic punk movement that went on was in the late 70s/early 80s and included bands like Sex Pistols, The Clash or The Damned in the UK or Ramones, Dead Kennedys or Misfits in the US. In the early days there was only punk rock as a genre but over the years there were several subgenres that evolved from that like hardcore punk, crust punk, fun punk, horror punk, ska punk and much more. Pop punk was probably the most popular since it was the one that had the most commercial success. Nevertheless it's just one subgenre of a genre that has much more to offer throughout it's existence of over 40 years now.
The Offspring are what's known as Skate Punk, which is pretty much a less political (and much more White) version of Punk, similar to Pop Punk but it was much more in line with the original attitude of Punk Rock than Pop Punk was. Blink 182 is another example of Skate Punk, but they also have a large crossover into Pop Punk.
The song is about the viewpoint of being a kid growing up with ambitions and dreams, but then making that transition into adulthood and finding out those hopes were never a guarantee and that the harsh truth of reality can simply destroy lives that were once so pure. As a senior in high school, I had a teacher leave for a week to return home for his own class reunion. It was kind of novel, being seniors ourselves and knowing that we'd one day be doing the same. When he came back though he was a bit disheartened. We were his first class of the day after he'd returned and he sat down with us and told us all to take life for all it is worth, and never take for granted the people around us because there will come a time when they just won't be there, and it will hit you like a brick wall. He'd been to several reunions and had noticed a trend that each year fewer and fewer people would show up for any number of reasons. Sickness, incarceration, death, or any number of things. It was certainly something to hear as a teenager who thought they were invincible with all of life ahead of them. I still remember that talk. Here's one for the teachers who actually kept it real.

The Offspring were kind of pop punk in the 90s. Think along the lines of Green Day and groups like that. Their big breakthrough songs were Come Out and Play and Self-esteem, but they also did the original version of Gone Away which recently got covered by Five Finger Death Punch. Another one they did was Pretty Fly For A White Guy.
You guys should listen to 40 Below Summer's "Relapse" especially Hollywood. It as you can tell deals with a subject we both have an experience with. Amazing song. Then listen to "Rain" that has some badass drums in it.

No matter how sad the song is, the music is so upbeat. "Gone away" is another great example. One of the saddest songs ever, but the music is happy.

I would suggest going a bit back and react from spmething from the Smash album which was what put The Offspring on the map
SAMIAM is a very underrated 90s alt-punk band. Dull, Simca, Bad Day, While You We’re Waiting, some great songs
This isn't punk. It's pop Punk. Punk is Dead Kennedys ,Bad Brains, The Dammed, etc
love the cat meme at the start of this one, because i was getting ready to comment that the offspring are my cat Olaf’s favorite band. no joke, he can be passed out in another room and if i hit play on any of their songs, he comes running in to the room and stares at the sound bar til i turn it up 😂 once i do, he plops down and gets comfy right there until i turn the music off 🤘🏻💜

Punk is one of my favorite genres of rock and these guys are one of my favorite punk bands this album is my favorite album of theirs and this is my favorite song on the album. Rise against is probably my most favorite punk band other than the offspring

Dudes, Hollywood mentioned they could rap over the instrumentals, def can... Chris Webby sampled this song in the track "Fragile Lives" off the "Bars On Me" mixtape, and it's fucking amazing.. hits you right in the feels in such a great way

The Offspring were kind of pop punk in the 90s. Think along the lines of Green Day and groups like that. Their big breakthrough songs were Come Out and Play and Self-esteem, but they also did the original version of Gone Away which recently got covered by Five Finger Death Punch. Another one they did was Pretty Fly For A White Guy.
You guys should listen to 40 Below Summer's "Relapse" especially Hollywood. It as you can tell deals with a subject we both have an experience with. Amazing song. Then listen to "Rain" that has some badass drums in it.

Blink 182 was definitely punk, but they were pop punk, so was Green Day, Offspring was more punk than pop, but their thing was that their songs were anthemic and epic.

I love The Offspring. I went to that Tony Hawk tour thing and they were the music. Only my dad was a little inebriated and goes "wow they suck," that put me in a bad mood and we left. :'( I still love them though! You should check out the song, "Why Don't You Get a Job?"
