We were all waiting for the van to come to bring us to Basecamp for lunch. Joss finally got tired of waiting and the three of them got in a crew cab pick up. As they drive off, we thought someone should drive behind them, and how good it was no one from the network or insurance company were there. In the bed of the pickup truck were the gas pumps for all the other vehicles. If someone rearended them, boom. The lead and both creators killed in one explosion on day three. The vampire makeup effects are different for this season as the original company owned the rights to the design. The good thing for me was David Miller worked at the Angel writers/editors offices at the Buffy lot in Santa Monica, but the stages and production offices were across town at the Paramount Lot. I got to drive over the effects every day that they needed them. I was also on set any time David Greenwalt was directing. Christian Kane was the lawyer at the end. He was later in Leverage and The Librarians. He's also a talented country singer/songwriter. I used to see his old band Kane a lot. He was also on some short lived fire fighter show. The parking garage where Angel jumped in the wrong car is the parking garage for the office building where Russell got tossed out the window. That stunt was a two part thing. He never went through the window. A stunt man was dropped on a wire down the side of the building and set on fire. The establishing shot of the building shows a woman in a blue shirt, prop master Courtney Jackson. EP 2 Kate is Elisabeth Röhm. She later became the celebrity spokesperson for the Epilepsy Foundation of NY. She was on Law & Prder at the time. My father was on the Board of Directors of the Epilepsy Foundation when she took over. He left shortly after when my parents retired and moved to NC from NJ. The Angel pilot was shot a month before the Buffy S4 premiere as Joss wanted to direct each episode and needed the prep time between episodes. Ep two was supposed to film immediately after, but the network had a heart attack when reading the script. Kate was still an undercover cop, but was investigating drugs and had gotten addicted to cocaine. Her process of getting clean was supposed to mirror Angel's redemption arc. David Fury was forced to write a while new episode. The writers were excited to have a big head start, but the delay eliminated that. I have one of those cards. It looks enough like an Angel to undercut the jokes. Cordy is still 18, but this show mostly ignores that. Though she's hot enough to get in most clubs and definitely looks much older as Charisma was now 29. Glenn Quinn as Doyle had previously been on Roseanne. But he got to mostly use his own Irish accent on this show, though he occasionally had to alter it for Americans to actually understand him. Though David Fury wrote ep 2, he was still a Buffy writer and had his office upstairs in the Buffy production offices. Ay some point early on a Mutant enemy softball team was started. This was a Buffy/Angel combo team. I signed up and got a team shirt and made a couple of games, I never played. I was never able to make it to practice, so I didn't feel bad. Alyson hannigan was the only actor on the combined team. She brought her then boyfriend to one of the games. He was extremely quiet and mainly kelp to himself. The next say, I opened a music magazine where he was interviewed and he was in full character behind his drum kit, but was standing with his arms up and out looking like he was jumping out of a birthday cake. He was Ginger Fish, then drummer for Marilyn Manson. If she hadn't told me who he was, I never would have guessed they were the same guy.

He just wandered into LA, bought an incredibly cool car, rented an office and an apartment that would go for a few thou even twenty years ago,, and was apparently planning on just living there without an income. So happy you are finally starting Angel. Who would have ever thought, watching Cordelia and Angel in episode one of BTVS, that those two out of ALL characters would end up as partners and employee-employer 4 yrs later fighting evil together in LA. Makes me smile thinking of their character journeys up to here and how their path brought them together like this. Thank god. I generally prefer Angel to Buffy, especially season 1 of Angel over Buffy season 4, but I hated the vampire makeup. The version they had on Buffy was far better.

Angel is my favourite show ever. I love Buffy, however when the shows came out, my high school days were long gone. If Buffy tells us that high school is hell, Angel is life after high school. More grown up, with all that entails.

I am so happy you two are watching Angel!!! It's my favorite show ever! I actually watched it before I ever watched Buffy. Its early morning timeslot on TNT made it perfect for me to watch an ep before school and record an ep to watch after. I didn't know it was a spin-off of anything until like halfway through because I missed the first few eps my first watchthrough, and I had been too young to watch the shows when they first aired. Even after finally watching Buffy, Angel is still my fav!! ❤
I have seen all episodes of Buffy but not Angel, so I’m really looking forward to watching these episodes with you guys. I have seen enough to know the main things that happen and how the show ends, and I feel like the show does get a little weird after Season 2, but it will still be nice to revisit and experience everything in chronological order. Cordy is a great addition to the show and her growth throughout will be something to watch. Plus, she isn’t the only Buffy alum we’ll be seeing along the way ;).
One thing I learned about watching Buffy, Joss whedon and his team of writers have a way of making you forget or not think about certain important characters for an episode or two until you see them again and then you're like omg like in this case as you guys mentioned you forgot all about Cordelia in the first two episodes of Buffy season 4.
I'm really enjoying seeing Angel through your eyes! I enjoyed it when it was brand new, but never found it all that rewatchable. So I'm looking forward to taking the Angel journey with you. Love you guys!
Excited I've finally caught up to join you on the Angel journey. Season 1 Angel reminds me of Season 1 Buffy, entertaining but still finding its footing. Meaning it gets better as you go.
My brother and I growing up, loved the early seasons of Angel!!! it was such a fun ride and has a darker edger kind of Film noir vibe to it!! Plus the intro music is incredibly beautiful. Quite a sorrowful tune. I cant wait for u guys to see their growth!! p.s. love love Darrell lol
I think its so interesting that, as much as all reactors love Cordy, most of them don't notice she's not in the first Buffy episode. Maybe Pedro blows their minds so much.

Yay! Angel is one of my favourite shows! I’m up in Canada, and the WB was premium cable, which was much too expensive for me at the time. So I had to watch it on a local channel. Where it aired in the middle of the night 😭-and it was never on at the same time! Sometimes it started at 12:45am. Or 2:20am. Or 3:15am. And the TV guide was never accurate. So I would set my VCR to record from 12:30 to 4:30 and hope I got it. It was BRUTAL. But I put up with it because I loved it . The season one box set was also the first dvd I ever bought, lol.
The difference between the shows are great! Angel is dark and Buffy is light. Buffy is about growing up and dealing with becoming an adult and Angel is about addiction and mental health. Love the buffy verse🧡
I love the show, and your reactions and discussion are great! The 3 main cast members play off each other so well, and I enjoyed what Kate the Cop brought to the mix in episode 2 as well.

TRIVIA: Episode 2 was hastily rewritten and reshot at the last minute and was originally very different. Instead of a trendy nightclub the demon was operating through the use of sex workers, and Kate was originally supposed to have working undercover as a prostitute and was also secretly addicted to coke. In the opening credits you'll see a woman in a black bra and purple coat getting into a car, well that's Kate.
I think the early episodes of Angel were actually quite good, and actually I preferred the style of Angel, and I love BTVS! The Detective Agency was a great idea to forge Angel's character. You could feel the attraction tension between Kate and Angel as the season develops. The comedy surrounding the business cards was actually very funny, ( butterfly, lobster ). From the S3 BTVS episode Amends, you can see that Angel is determined to do as much as he can to help others and atone for his previous sins, and in his own show this arc is developed further. I read they had to re-shoot a lot of scenes for early episodes as it had a bit in E1 where Angel was licking blood off a carpet and the WB objected to this so they had to tone it down. This was very much like an X-Files type of episode, with the monster of the week etc, Directed by James A Contner who Directed one the best X-Files episode in Soft Light, he also did many BTVS episodes also. Still a great follow up to City Of. Believe me the show just gets better and better. Great to see you enjoying it. Angel absolutely is a brilliant show in its own right I hope you stick with it, the way this show develops is amazing, S5 of Angel is off the charts.
Also, Kate was intended to be a hardcore drug addict and crooked cop. But for similar reasons to censoring Angel licking Tina’s blood, they changed it. And I vastly prefer Kate being a straight cop. Fun fact, when Angel finds Tina, you see him put his blood-covered fingers in his mouth, just before the scene transitions away.

I'm someone who prefers Angel to Buffy, and I'm so happy you're enjoying it so far. This show goes to some wild places and is incredibly ambitious, and I think you're really going to love it!
Except season four. Despite it having some of the highlights of the series, a large chunk of it was traumatising. There’s not enough bleach in the world to clean my poor eyes. If you know, you know.
Guys Welcome to the other part of The Buffyverse. Give it time it's a brilliant show. This was a strong opener Angel as a character has so much depth in this. Great to see Cordy too, and along with Doyle a great trio in the early days. Great crossover episodes and plotlines too with BTVS. If you keep to the watch order it will make a bit more sense but if you are going to do alternative episodes you will enjoy it the same. Great scene when Angel fires Russel out through the window and he burns on the way down. Enjoy the show, IMHO the very best episodes of Angel are easily a match for BTVS and many surpass it. The premise of Buffy is “growing up” with each demon/big bad representing a challenge you face during adolescence. The Scooby Gang all grow up together, and find their way to adulthood. The premise of Angel is about already being an adult, and “Living with choices we’ve made and how to make the best of the time we have.” Everyone in Angel has something they want to redeem themselves from. Buffy is a show about teenagers stumbling their way to adulthood. It’s far more geared for a teenage audience, since the whole show is about the new challenges you experience as you grow up. As younger people, we watched and totally related to the Scoobies. And as adults, we all relate to Joyce and Giles, and mentally call out all the preventable dramas the Scoobies got themselves into. Angel is a show that you can only really understand and appreciate as an adult. You need _some_ life experience to understand. Watching it as a younger person, I certainly missed many nuances and elements that went right over my head, that I feel in my soul now as an adult. While Buffy is written as a young girl, finding herself and becoming a fully realised young woman, Angel is written as a recovering violent alcoholic, earnestly trying to redeem his past actions.
i love this show. i wasnt a big angel fan on buffy but I really like him on his own show. its a darker show, more adult. kinda noir detective. unlike buffy and her gang he isn't a teen, his life would be more adult. and I think LA lends itself well to that. like doyle. i grew up watching the actor on roseanne but I find this character much more endearing. and I think cordy is the brightness that this show needs in contract to angel.
The first twelve episodes are very “monster of the week” as the show establishes itself (not unlike Buffy season one). They’re still enjoyable, but once the later half of the season begins, it’s absolutely amazing. The Irish character, Doyle, was indeed intended to have been Whistler, the good demon that we say in the season two finale of Angel, but I believe he was unavailable. So Glenn Quinn was cast instead as a similar character to fulfil the same character role and personality that Whistler would have. Sadly, Glenn Quinn would die from a heroin overdose. Kate is an _incredible_ character. I really enjoy her on the show. She’s a great balance to the supernatural. So glad you started reacting to Angel. I hope you both enjoy. And can’t wait for your reactions and precious gay gasps!
I’m so glad you guys also picked up Angel. I love this show. I love Buffy too but I had a deeper connection with Angel. The style just suited me more I think. Plus I think it helped I was able to see the first episode of angel on tv and continue with it. With Buffy I missed part of it. And only was able the see everything later in life. Also happy someone warned you about the opening. That would have spoiled Cordy’s introduction.
Your reaction to Cordelia showing up was very satisfying. Queen Cordy, yay! Sergio, you were vibing with the music in ep 2 at 32:09...me too when I rewatched this show for the first time after a number of years. I ended up going down a VAST rabbit hole. Some really good songs from this artist. The track in that episode is called Touched.
Angel as a series does have different themes and darker tones compared to Buffy. Ironically, Buffy being in L.A. at the beginning of season 3 feels like a teaser compared to what this series touches on. Also Angel does go through different phases as his story progresses. Ex: This half of the season is pretty much his Batman phase.

Angel to the rescue! 🔥 Curious about the senior partners. Cordelia working with Angel & Doyle! It’s giving Batman 😂 Them trying to figure out what the business card art was. Doyle’s visions are intense. Everyone thinking Angel is hitting on them or them hitting on him is hilarious. I’m liking how each episode has Angel connecting with humans. Not those guys thinking Cordy was a hooker 🤦🏽♀️ “Go to hell…been there done that.” Liking the Cordy/Doyle scenes. Body hopping demon. Kate being a cop 🤯 Cordy’s apartment 😭 Donkey demon 😂 Aww not the bartender. The grappling hook fail 💀 So creepy watching the decaying demon try to talk up women at the bar. Liking Kate so far. Interested to see how that relationship develops. I was excited to start Angel but I’m enjoying it so much more than I even thought I would! Love the reaction as always 🖤
This isn't a spoiler, and not sure if anyone mentioned it, but Doyle was originally supposed to the be the character, WHISTLER, from the end of season 2 of Buffy, but the actor was unavailable. Hence Glenn Quinn and the very Whistler like character that isn't quite him ;) Angel is such a counter to Buffy. It's tone and approach are different, but I love it. Get's a little sketchy at times (when you get there, you will remember I said it), but it's such a good ride with one of the best finales EVER in my opinion. Carry on into the good night of Buffydom!!!
I love that you are doing Angel as well. Imo, Angel gets better with each season, and the last season is one of the best in the Buffyverse (behind Buffy S5 of course).

Fun reaction and it’s a joy to watch this excellent show with you. Think about the challenges facing Whedon and the writers. They were going to follow Buffy on Tuesday nights. They had to keep the BTVS audience, be a difffernt show, and to grow a different audience in the male 14-29 target group. The production team took the first season to set the stage and slowly move the audience and the characters to a different level. All of that without losing the core but able to attract a new audience. A hard task but you will see their success. The show truly becomes its own in Season 2 but it’s an excellent first year. Your viewing schedule is ambitious. Just keep in mind we watched the shows back to back. Keep up the great work and you are going to have a great time. The only question is when are you going to look at each other and ask… Why didn’t we know about these 2 shows earlier? Lucky for us we have the pleasure of watching the discovery.

It was actually supposed to be but since this came out around the time of the Blade movies and they also had a character named Whistler so the creators of Angel had to change it to Doyle.

Angel may not have a 401K, but he's definitely been doing something with money. He just wandered into LA, bought an incredibly cool car, rented an office and an apartment that would go for a few thou even twenty years ago,, and was apparently planning on just living there without an income. So... he's got some financial resources somewhere!
So happy you are finally starting Angel. Who would have ever thought, watching Cordelia and Angel in episode one of BTVS, that those two out of ALL characters would end up as partners and employee-employer 4 yrs later fighting evil together in LA. Makes me smile thinking of their character journeys up to here and how their path brought them together like this. Also, love your discussion about Angel’s characterization in BTVS (from Buffy’s perspective) and Angel in ATS.
Angel and Cordelia have one of the best dynamics of any show I’ve ever seen. Early Angel was soo great.

They changed the vampire makeup to give a more evil appearance, but it looked terrible so they went back to the usual vampire look after the pilot episode.
Thank god. I generally prefer Angel to Buffy, especially season 1 of Angel over Buffy season 4, but I hated the vampire makeup. The version they had on Buffy was far better.

Angel is my favourite show ever. I love Buffy, however when the shows came out, my high school days were long gone.
If Buffy tells us that high school is hell, Angel is life after high school. More grown up, with all that entails.
I am so glad that choose this show. For me is this little more darker and showing more type od monsters and threats than Buffy. Less teenage stuff and drama. I always like it more. I am looking foward to your reactions so much 🤩

I am so happy you two are watching Angel!!! It's my favorite show ever! I actually watched it before I ever watched Buffy. Its early morning timeslot on TNT made it perfect for me to watch an ep before school and record an ep to watch after. I didn't know it was a spin-off of anything until like halfway through because I missed the first few eps my first watchthrough, and I had been too young to watch the shows when they first aired. Even after finally watching Buffy, Angel is still my fav!! ❤
I have seen all episodes of Buffy but not Angel, so I’m really looking forward to watching these episodes with you guys. I have seen enough to know the main things that happen and how the show ends, and I feel like the show does get a little weird after Season 2, but it will still be nice to revisit and experience everything in chronological order. Cordy is a great addition to the show and her growth throughout will be something to watch. Plus, she isn’t the only Buffy alum we’ll be seeing along the way ;).
One thing I learned about watching Buffy, Joss whedon and his team of writers have a way of making you forget or not think about certain important characters for an episode or two until you see them again and then you're like omg like in this case as you guys mentioned you forgot all about Cordelia in the first two episodes of Buffy season 4.

My brother and I growing up, loved the early seasons of Angel!!! it was such a fun ride and has a darker edger kind of Film noir vibe to it!! Plus the intro music is incredibly beautiful. Quite a sorrowful tune. I cant wait for u guys to see their growth!! p.s. love love Darrell lol
I think its so interesting that, as much as all reactors love Cordy, most of them don't notice she's not in the first Buffy episode. Maybe Pedro blows their minds so much.

Yay! Angel is one of my favourite shows! I’m up in Canada, and the WB was premium cable, which was much too expensive for me at the time. So I had to watch it on a local channel. Where it aired in the middle of the night 😭-and it was never on at the same time! Sometimes it started at 12:45am. Or 2:20am. Or 3:15am. And the TV guide was never accurate. So I would set my VCR to record from 12:30 to 4:30 and hope I got it. It was BRUTAL. But I put up with it because I loved it . The season one box set was also the first dvd I ever bought, lol.
The difference between the shows are great! Angel is dark and Buffy is light. Buffy is about growing up and dealing with becoming an adult and Angel is about addiction and mental health. Love the buffy verse🧡
I love the show, and your reactions and discussion are great! The 3 main cast members play off each other so well, and I enjoyed what Kate the Cop brought to the mix in episode 2 as well.

TRIVIA: Episode 2 was hastily rewritten and reshot at the last minute and was originally very different. Instead of a trendy nightclub the demon was operating through the use of sex workers, and Kate was originally supposed to have working undercover as a prostitute and was also secretly addicted to coke. In the opening credits you'll see a woman in a black bra and purple coat getting into a car, well that's Kate.
Early 2000s or 90s look. That hairstyle of Angels. The shirts and tshirts with a long coat. Definitely influenced some guys to dress like that.
I think the early episodes of Angel were actually quite good, and actually I preferred the style of Angel, and I love BTVS! The Detective Agency was a great idea to forge Angel's character. You could feel the attraction tension between Kate and Angel as the season develops. The comedy surrounding the business cards was actually very funny, ( butterfly, lobster ). From the S3 BTVS episode Amends, you can see that Angel is determined to do as much as he can to help others and atone for his previous sins, and in his own show this arc is developed further. I read they had to re-shoot a lot of scenes for early episodes as it had a bit in E1 where Angel was licking blood off a carpet and the WB objected to this so they had to tone it down. This was very much like an X-Files type of episode, with the monster of the week etc, Directed by James A Contner who Directed one the best X-Files episode in Soft Light, he also did many BTVS episodes also. Still a great follow up to City Of. Believe me the show just gets better and better. Great to see you enjoying it. Angel absolutely is a brilliant show in its own right I hope you stick with it, the way this show develops is amazing, S5 of Angel is off the charts.
Also, Kate was intended to be a hardcore drug addict and crooked cop. But for similar reasons to censoring Angel licking Tina’s blood, they changed it. And I vastly prefer Kate being a straight cop.
Fun fact, when Angel finds Tina, you see him put his blood-covered fingers in his mouth, just before the scene transitions away.

And yeah, Doyle's character was originally meant to be Whistler, from Becoming on Buffy, but they couldn't get the actor and/or decided to go with someone different.
I'm someone who prefers Angel to Buffy, and I'm so happy you're enjoying it so far. This show goes to some wild places and is incredibly ambitious, and I think you're really going to love it!
Except season four. Despite it having some of the highlights of the series, a large chunk of it was traumatising. There’s not enough bleach in the world to clean my poor eyes.

Guys Welcome to the other part of The Buffyverse. Give it time it's a brilliant show. This was a strong opener Angel as a character has so much depth in this. Great to see Cordy too, and along with Doyle a great trio in the early days. Great crossover episodes and plotlines too with BTVS. If you keep to the watch order it will make a bit more sense but if you are going to do alternative episodes you will enjoy it the same. Great scene when Angel fires Russel out through the window and he burns on the way down. Enjoy the show, IMHO the very best episodes of Angel are easily a match for BTVS and many surpass it. Enjoy the show, you will love it. Good Luck.

The premise of Buffy is “growing up” with each demon/big bad representing a challenge you face during adolescence. The Scooby Gang all grow up together, and find their way to adulthood.
The premise of Angel is about already being an adult, and “Living with choices we’ve made and how to make the best of the time we have.” Everyone in Angel has something they want to redeem themselves from.
Buffy is a show about teenagers stumbling their way to adulthood. It’s far more geared for a teenage audience, since the whole show is about the new challenges you experience as you grow up. As younger people, we watched and totally related to the Scoobies. And as adults, we all relate to Joyce and Giles, and mentally call out all the preventable dramas the Scoobies got themselves into.
Angel is a show that you can only really understand and appreciate as an adult. You need _some_ life experience to understand. Watching it as a younger person, I certainly missed many nuances and elements that went right over my head, that I feel in my soul now as an adult.
While Buffy is written as a young girl, finding herself and becoming a fully realised young woman, Angel is written as a recovering violent alcoholic, earnestly trying to redeem his past actions.
i love Doyle and Kate so much! great new characters bc sometimes that doesnt always work out well but those two are 🤌🏼
i love this show. i wasnt a big angel fan on buffy but I really like him on his own show. its a darker show, more adult. kinda noir detective. unlike buffy and her gang he isn't a teen, his life would be more adult. and I think LA lends itself well to that. like doyle. i grew up watching the actor on roseanne but I find this character much more endearing. and I think cordy is the brightness that this show needs in contract to angel.
The first twelve episodes are very “monster of the week” as the show establishes itself (not unlike Buffy season one). They’re still enjoyable, but once the later half of the season begins, it’s absolutely amazing.
The Irish character, Doyle, was indeed intended to have been Whistler, the good demon that we say in the season two finale of Angel, but I believe he was unavailable. So Glenn Quinn was cast instead as a similar character to fulfil the same character role and personality that Whistler would have. Sadly, Glenn Quinn would die from a heroin overdose.
Kate is an _incredible_ character. I really enjoy her on the show. She’s a great balance to the supernatural.

I’m so glad you guys also picked up Angel. I love this show. I love Buffy too but I had a deeper connection with Angel. The style just suited me more I think. Plus I think it helped I was able to see the first episode of angel on tv and continue with it. With Buffy I missed part of it. And only was able the see everything later in life. Also happy someone warned you about the opening. That would have spoiled Cordy’s introduction.
Your reaction to Cordelia showing up was very satisfying. Queen Cordy, yay! Sergio, you were vibing with the music in ep 2 at 32:09...me too when I rewatched this show for the first time after a number of years. I ended up going down a VAST rabbit hole. Some really good songs from this artist. The track in that episode is called Touched.
Angel as a series does have different themes and darker tones compared to Buffy. Ironically, Buffy being in L.A. at the beginning of season 3 feels like a teaser compared to what this series touches on. Also Angel does go through different phases as his story progresses. Ex: This half of the season is pretty much his Batman phase.

Them trying to figure out what the business card art was. Doyle’s visions are intense. Everyone thinking Angel is hitting on them or them hitting on him is hilarious. I’m liking how each episode has Angel connecting with humans. Not those guys thinking Cordy was a hooker 🤦🏽♀️ “Go to hell…been there done that.” Liking the Cordy/Doyle scenes. Body hopping demon. Kate being a cop 🤯 Cordy’s apartment 😭 Donkey demon 😂 Aww not the bartender. The grappling hook fail 💀 So creepy watching the decaying demon try to talk up women at the bar. Liking Kate so far. Interested to see how that relationship develops. I was excited to start Angel but I’m enjoying it so much more than I even thought I would! Love the reaction as always 🖤

Angel is such a counter to Buffy. It's tone and approach are different, but I love it. Get's a little sketchy at times (when you get there, you will remember I said it), but it's such a good ride with one of the best finales EVER in my opinion. Carry on into the good night of Buffydom!!!

I actually prefer Angel [outside of season 4] to the later seasons of Buffy. David Boreanez's acting is superb in this series, and the cast around him.

Fun reaction and it’s a joy to watch this excellent show with you. Think about the challenges facing Whedon and the writers. They were going to follow Buffy on Tuesday nights. They had to keep the BTVS audience, be a difffernt show, and to grow a different audience in the male 14-29 target group. The production team took the first season to set the stage and slowly move the audience and the characters to a different level. All of that without losing the core but able to attract a new audience. A hard task but you will see their success. The show truly becomes its own in Season 2 but it’s an excellent first year. Your viewing schedule is ambitious. Just keep in mind we watched the shows back to back. Keep up the great work and you are going to have a great time. The only question is when are you going to look at each other and ask… Why didn’t we know about these 2 shows earlier? Lucky for us we have the pleasure of watching the discovery.

Episode 1x02: Angel, Cordy, and Doyle officially start up Angel Investigations. And we first meet the character of Kate.
