Young boy determined to see it all before he goes blind

- As part of our continuing series, "On the Road," Steve Hartman meets 9-year-old Ben Pierce who suffers from a condition that is slowly stealing his sight. His parents are determined to help him experience everything he wants to before his vision fades.
Such a sweetheart :') I hope he somehow gets his vision back someday.
I met a sweet young boy and his mother one day almost 25 years ago. The sweet darling joy was going blind and possibly may end up dying because of a brain tumor. I was at the hospital for my son to has his first doctors appointment at 6 weeks old. The mother was close to tears and could tell she was dying a little inside. She came up to me and asked with hope in her voice if her son could look at my son. I said sure and that made her smile. She explained to me about her son and I then offered to let him hold my then newborn son. You would have thought I was giving her the greatest gift ever and in a way I was. I gave her the gift of seeing her son smile such a beautiful smile of pure delight and joy. He had told her very recently that he wondered what holding a baby was like and wanted to one day hold one. I am to this day of being able, even if for a short time fulfilling such a pure wish as that. I like to think the sweet boy survived the operation and has his own family. I think about it almost daily still.

Most thoughtful parents on the face of the earth! My dad was in the military and we traveled all over the world. One of my very favorite memories as a nine year old was our trip to Mount Rushmore. I can see it in my head right now, so many years later, yet I only saw it once. Such a wonderful story.
When I was a baby, I was told I would be blind by 20. My sight loss was steady but slowed when I was 11. I'm legally blind but I can see WAY more than I'm "supposed to". I hope he gets to see all those cool things no matter what winds up happening.

It must stink to not be able to see again. I hope Ben and others who are unable to see would someday be able to see again, and I have hopes for the future with the development of medicine and technology in general.
What a awesome little guy. Dad needs to make sure he gets to see everything. Wow just read a story where on eof eyes has stopped working.

I worked at a restaurant for a while and had a boss who had an uncle who is blind. He wasn't born blind. He got a macular degeneration of some kind and was blind by 16. He is a very successful stock broker/financial consultant and he and his highschool sweetheart have been married for 40+ years. I couldn't imagine anyone has a single bad thing to say about either of them. They are that level of good people.... But I have been told the tale that when he knew he was going blind he wanted to have sex with his girlfriend at the time (it was his only girlfriend and is a saint of a woman to this day) so he could see her one last time before he went blind. Love is something we should all try a little harder to get to
