Can techniques you used be transferred in all systems? Of course they chuffin can! Keep up the good work, enjoying painting what you want to paint and keep being the D-Dog we all love! 🐻❤
The music early in the video was in Jin Roh. Im 47 and started "the hobby" with Ral Partha miniatures, painting cool little warbands. Eventually Warhammer became all consuming; primarily the catch-up cycle of painting miniatures 'that win' became a chore. Having two sons now, I split from GW due to the cost & politics. I tried simpler games, and OnePageRules proved to be very liberating. Because you can take any miniature and apply it to their rules, or make your own unit rules. It got me back to painting "cool little warbands" of miniatures I like.
Honestly you’ve done some of your best work this past year in my opinion, I love your bit about resolutions that aren’t just about doing more, I’m gonna take that on this yeah, cheers
I've loved every vid o this year, you're hands down one of my top 3 hobby-tubers, and now you're collaborating with another one! '24 gonna be a good year methinks
this video probably got into my algorithm for warhammer but i like your stance on not feeding it with bad content. i will stick around for whatever else you have under your sleeve
It’s been so awesome to see your channel grow. I remember when there were only a couple thousand subs. Now you’re just killing it with your videos and growth! Congrats on everything you’ve accomplished!!
I have been GW free for years. Yet I am consuming GW content on TH-cam, as the skills transfer to the games I play (historical). Having a wargaming channel that has the content I want has been great
These videos are just impossibly good. Imagine someone this skilled at their videography craft gracing us in hobby world. We couldn't be luckier. Thanks mate, and a happy new year to you
Mate that was quality! I love the dramatic cinematography you put into your videos. Always entertaining and thought provoking. Whatever direction you choose to go in I am sure it will be a bloody enjoyable watch! Much respect. 🤟
Probably one of the most interesting videos youve done - these talking head pieces from you always have been. I kind of want a Bill, Dave, and Miscast podcast... What was the cease and desist for?
I come here for the eclectic and the tangential. Appreciate your approach and your content. Do what make you happy and keeps you interested, we'll show up for it.
Fapchop you surely meant ;) I started this year with less. Thanks to GW hype train i menaged to sell off two out of four of my old WFB armies. It is tempting to push at least one more too :) Happy new year mate.
The main reason I subscribe to your channel is because you dive into niche and nostalgic stuff so much, plus I tried and couldn't get into Warhammer so am also happy to see hobby stuff not only about that single game. I honestly spend most of your videos admiring all the cool shit on your shelves etc and would love to see more of that in the spotlight, plus new stuff I haven't seen before. But hey that's just me. Whatever you get up to all the best, man!
It’s still been one of my favourite channels in the last year despite the lack of Warhammer - which like others I hadn’t really noticed. Besides, if i ever miss Dave talking Warhammer I just go back and watch him waxing lyrical about a brochure again. Comedy gold right there. What the hell was the cease and desist for? Can’t think of anything you did that would have stressed them.
Very good, verrrry good! Great video as always, lovely sense of balance in the discussion. Not too much "Warhammers is a big pile of wank" or "I've missed Warhammer so much" Looking forward to the collaboration as well, Bill is a very funny fella. Top work as always Dave.
Thought provoking stuff Dave. I'm only a few months into my TH-cam journey in the wargame space and your points about the state of the feed, the potential bubble and pigeon-hole business very much echo some of the concerns I have. Ah well, looking forward to the collaboration with Bill!
Love your videos, always a welcome appearence in my feed! My partner and I also enjoy spotting our various hobbies / interests reflected in your awesome hobby den. Which we hope to one day have of our own, I have a stack of Trek and Thunderbird models to make, partner has Star Wars, Ghost in the Shell and Gundam... We have run out space for the things we enjoy! But again thank you for making your videos they have brought us comfort and joy for the past few years, esspecially through the last year. Medical and job stuff not been great, so even if this is badly written or random I'm making a point this year to thank the people that bring me joy. ☺
I wasn't aware you weren't doing any Warhammer this year. I have to say your content this year has been amazing, my favourite thing back in the old hobby stores was looking at all the other games, all the other model kits and I feel you have brought that energy to your channel. Thanks for a great year!
EPIC film making as usual! Your storytelling/hobby skills just get better and better. I took a good 15 years off warhammer tbf, I did miss it but I appreciated it when I returned, Kind of, things changed... mainly the price... and fantasy was gone... and the shop was different... the man in there seemed sad... etc
Unbelievably well said. Money/spontaneous purchasing in a hobby rarely fills that gap in happiness you're looking for. Sometimes it really is best to just sit back, take a breather and reset (somewhat, anyway).
I enjoyed that. I have always been a warhammer painter and haven’t done anything else (bar minis that have come with one box board games like Dune Imperium), and I’ve never known what else to try when branching out. I’m currently taking a step back, not from warhammer, but I won’t buy anymore till I paint all the boxes I have. So I like the idea of your experiment very much
@@MSPaints it’s been two months since I bought anything new. I had some FOMO but that’s gone now. Next thing my plan is to sell some models that I’m not using etc. That’s gonna be a hard step
@@johnhobkinson560 that can be a tough one! Sometimes you just need to be honest about which projects you'll never get around to or descaling some of the sizes of projects you have. I've done something similar and it was hard!
@@walksinthedarkness I agree. I was talking to my partner this morning and she herself has a pile of shame she wants to examine. For me it’s looking at my AoS orks that I just go “am I ever going to want to go back to them. And consider maybe passing them on. I think when it comes time, I’d rather pass them onto a new person as when I joined the hobby last year, members of the local club kept giving me models
Great vid Dave. You already probably know this from the YT dashboard, but your vids rarely (if ever) came up for me due to *the algorithm* - so just at a "consumer" level I thought you might want to know that, presumably because the WH wasnt mentioned in your titles. Anyway - all the best, keep doing what you WANT (!) to do, and I hope you might want to do something on Legions Imperialis soon given your previous vid on Epic... and the fact that a certain company who produced it is already shocked by the appeal and sales its had over standard 40K (not my words, a local store manager for said company's words!)
That's the best Squarespace advert I have ever seen! ;) But the most important, that was a great experiment with the year off. I couldn't resist and pre-ordered myself an Old World but also started a withdrawal from painting too much Warhammer. I had a small 500+ followers account on Instagram and noticed a big drop in response rate when I shifted to other things. But I started spending more time with my family which is good. I also started to plan other painting projects which I always wanted to do. More thought put into everything now. Great video, thank you!
You know, I didn't even realize you didn't do any Warhammer this last year. Your production value is great. Your ideas are great. Not only do I look forward to your videos, I don't watch them right away. I save them for when I can actually sit down and enjoy them. You, Health and Safety Frog, and Tony D are part of my most favorite TH-cam content providers. You keep doing you, brother. Thank you.
Opening was phenomenal! Yea, I got into Kill Team 2.0 when it released and bought way too many quarterly boxes that are mostly still unopened or only have one team put together. I think I've done pretty good last year resisting the FOMO urge and concentrating on what I already have. Thanks for the video and here's to a new year and many new videos!
love your direction (no direction) the new hook, it will come, something will spark you, been looking forward to every video you make, make a bot, bash it, try to spread your hobby wings! Cheers from an old guy from Canada.
Well done!!! Making a video that sounds like The Thing( storm outside) was expecting the hartbeat-sound at the end. The end was perfect!!! I follow you for you'r calm pesona & fantastic humor. You make me want to make a video... or a move...or "just" a comic. You are inspiring!!! Luv,luv,luv..
Quality content as always Dave. As for the year ahead ,to quote Lewis Carroll- 'if you don't know where you're going, any road will get you there'! I took 30 years out from Warhammer, so I still have some energy for it. See you on the road!
Happy New Year mate. That ending with Bill was fantastic! I've kept away from the warhammers for a few years now, and thoroughly enjoying Stargrave, Silver Bayonet, Reality's Edge etc. Small warband skirmish games are definitely my jam.
Definitely something I'm thinking about for the start of this year, despite Christmas and my oncoming birthday likely giving me some Warhammer stuff, I want to spread my wings, but also, just get shit done (ie. Save my model money). Thanks for posting this, appreciated, Dave.
The irony is you’re honestly one of the best “warhammer” content creators on TH-cam… the production is stellar and the takes are always unique. Looking forward to seeing where the next step with the channel goes.
I have really enjoyed the last year of content, it's been great to see outside the yellow and red bubble. I am questioning my hobby system buy more than I am finishing, built more than I have primed, primed more than I have painted! Bit crazy as I looked at it so took deep breath and decided finish some of what I have and enjoy the finished the 2 army's I am playing and just buy stuff to finish them not buy more gear to finish. Paints glue etc. I guess be more chill!
Watched. Subscribed. Looking through other vids. Recovering 40k mini-ac here. My journey has involved TTRPGs, and model agnostic rule sets. And painting random things for FUN.
See this is why I come back to all of your vids, because you are awesome. You tell it like it is, and that's sadly lacking from a lot of the others. Shine on superstar 🙌
Subscribed. Starting year of zero hobby purchases after refining my pile of potential down to the minimal required for the next project. Love the editing and intro and message
Always appreciate your content. I like the variety and the videos are always entertaining. After I backed Dead Man’s Hand, I’m on the new year, no army kick! Going to happily work on whatever I feel like in my vast gray pile
TBH I love this different approach to the hobby. I enjoy learning new things, and there was a lot to learn about the hobby in 2023 from your channel because of this decision. That said, I wish you a great 2024 with a lot more stuff to explore, outside of Warhammer. 😊
I totally get you Dave! I'm a 3d sculptor, creating miniatures and other stuff - and I'm trying to work only on projects I actually like. I have a feeling that many other artists don't feel the same and they are trying to go with "popular" thing at the moment. Happy new year brother!
Hey, I don't normally comment on videos but your mention of imposter syndrome compelled me - yours is the best miniature channel on TH-cam. But, just like with miniature games, and sadly most things in life, the best is rarely the most popular. It stinks. You deserve more, but at least you've kept your soul.
I've been following your youtube so long now, and anytime you are just diving into your own interests have been te best. Just keep doing what youre doing, what you enjoy and more people will find you..!!
Fair do's, because of seeing it on your channel I bought a bunch of Dystopian Wars ships and got my mate into wargaming with it. I also bought myself a couple of gundam kits and I'm enjoying them and looking forward to the whole nerding / detailing slippery slope, panel lining is a thing already. And i would have given into the fomo but GW sold out of all the Christmas boxes the day they went on pre-order so I spent the money on a bunch of Moonstone minis instead. I'll buy the cardstock village kit that you were reviewing in a couple of months. I don't know how much it's worth but you got me as a viewer, I'll look forward to whatever you're doing.
For me, Warhammer has been happily sustaining my hobby enjoyment. 2023 I'd aquired and expanded alot of my armies; started collecting but never yet played with an AoS army and even achieved my long time wish and goal of getting and building/painting my Tau Supremacy. With 2024 I feel like I want to spend that time getting all caught up on these armies ive built painting wise and finally get some tabletop time with AoS to learn that new game. I suppose the best point I can end with is GW stuff or not, do what you enjoy; and be proud to share it with others. That kind of energy is infectious and healthy for us all!
Love these videos, really enjoyed the Gunpla build you did in the past. I've recently taken a break from from WH40k for the last 6 months. Still keep up with whats going on and such, but i havnt bought a WH40k model since June 2023 ( Daemon Prince for my DG army). For my hobby time, ive been wrapping up some old Gunpla kits ive had on the back burner for years. Finally finished the MG Hi-Nu Gundam Ver.ka I started back in 2016, just recently finished the decals and such.
Stepping away from the "Red 'n Yellow" can indeed be a rewarding and refreshing experience, for instance I'm building up a Human Defence Force for One Page Rule's Grimdark Future and I've set myself a single rule: No Games Workshop other than paints and/or decals, not even the bloody bases. Doing this has made my push my creativity and forced me to dig trough boxes at home or websites for the right things, all my infantry, save one, are Raumjägers from Wargames Atlantic whereas my vehicles are from Archon Studio, I'm getting myself some dropships too but those will be from Mantic Games. Honestly, it's the most fun I've ever had working on an army and one that's nearly completely painted as a result.
Mate, thanks for explaining. I have to say, I really enjoyed the last year with your content and did not miss that there was no Warhammer. 😉Looking forward to what you have this year in mind.
I have just (this weekend) put all my Warhammer models away as i just dont want to do anything with them - even the Cities of Sigmar stuff i got just before and with some xmas gifts. Going to restart with Bolt Action and probably pick up Walking Dead when Mantic relaunch it later in the year. Great video as always. Look forward to seeing what delights you have for us this year Dave.
Great video. You sure made me start thinking about how I want my GW stuff to look like instead of what they should like. And yeah, there's a lot of nice games out there. Thanks for this video. :)
I don't always watch your videos as soon as they're uploaded. An MSPaints video has to be savoured, they always warrant my full attention. Keep doing you, you're a wonderful dude and creator.
great video man, I'm glad you're getting back into warhammer (hopefully not too much) because i like seeing the different stuff you do. The robot sound awesome, cant wait :) you might want to get a bed tho, being up north sure can get cold XD
Dude, the year off from Gee Dubya made room for Stargrave. Also the Alien Dropship build and effects shots... And a whole lot of other cool stuff I enjoyed this year.
Great video mate. The ending has me creasing 😂 found myself taking a step back from the new editions the last couple of years and beating that fomo had a pleasant roll on effect of not feeling pressured to keep buy what I can't afford and don't have time for. It's nice to breathe
Such an amazing vid Dave. Not wanting to slag off the standard TH-cam Warhams scene too much but it's amazing how few vids hold my attention *despite being about the exact thing that I'm into!* whereas this was like jumping into an ice-bath of revitalising clarity! Good on you mate.
If I could give the video a 2nd like for the Frank Black, I would. I'd really love a video tour of the hobby Dungeon. I'm always seeing cool things in the background of your videos.
Lovely video and I agree with a lot of your sentiments. It feels like the only way to make more non-Warhammer hobbies popular (esp. on TH-cam) is just to bite the bullet and keep up the exposure. Personally I'd love to see more vids on Stargrave, OPR and the like but 40K seems to be the only thing that pulls in the big views sadly. I'll be here watching regardless! 😉 P.S. Your production values are incredible, each video just gets more and more impressive. 👍
I found this channel back when you had like 1,000 subs and I always thought, “Dave deserves WAYYYY more subs, this channel is so awesome and well done”. I’ve always wondered if a person could escape that (red and yellow brand) as a content creator and be successful… but there’s so many good games out there. I don’t play Warhammer. Im more into dungeon crawler board games and mini painting and I feel like I don’t have a home of sorts in the TH-cam space because every damn channel just talks about Warhammer all the time. I love GW minis and use them wherever I can proxy models for games but because of that I pretty much didn’t watch any TH-cam for all last year and wasn’t really even getting notifications to remind me to watch videos like Dave’s. (Unfortunate because it turns out Dave’s channel would’ve been perfect for me and would’ve helped Dave). So I’m glad to see the channel have way more subs now and you’re more than just another GW guy. Well here’s to binge watching some MS Paints.

Thanks
Wow! Thanks for the super, mate!
Thank you mate!
Having a wargaming channel that has the content I want has been great
I'd love to see some Stargrave or Rumbleslam videos on here. I don't think either gets enough attention out there in the world.
Love to see what Dave would do with rumbleslam, I have him pegged as a closet ultimate warrior fan myself...😂
*LOAD THE SPACESHIP WITH THE ROCKET FUEL!*
I love your foray into Gundam. My oldest son is into Gundam and your foray into it has opened my eyes as to what he sees in them.
Nice ghost effect on 10:05 had me wondering there for a sec! You have an amazing quality over your videos! Happy new year!
I enjoyed that a lot. I couldn't help wondering how you got away using the Patlabor music without risking a claim?
It'll catch up with me eventually i'm sure, haha.
@@MSPaints shieeeet
Fapchop you surely meant ;) I started this year with less. Thanks to GW hype train i menaged to sell off two out of four of my old WFB armies. It is tempting to push at least one more too :) Happy new year mate.
Happy new year! And thanks for saying FAPCHOP. I’m using that at some point!
Love your channel for your varied videos and your excellent cinematographics! Not just Warhammer, Warhammer, Warhammer but varied content! 😄
Getting back to the spirit of the hobby without the FOMO and the targets is a real relieve!
I definitely come here for your realist perspective, well shot entertainment, and lack of click bait.
I love this channel. Honestly the content, the shots, clever use of the bloody floor. Just quality, all class man
Not enough people using the floor!
Very good, verrrry good! Great video as always, lovely sense of balance in the discussion. Not too much "Warhammers is a big pile of wank" or "I've missed Warhammer so much"
Looking forward to the collaboration as well, Bill is a very funny fella.
Top work as always Dave.
Thanks, flower! Yep, always a mildly passive aggressive apathy is my go to!
Looking forward to the next year of content, if it’s anything like the last year it will be sound.
I want a second channel from you that has zero production effort, just you going thru your day and taking us along
I won't lie, I got into your channel for warhammer, stayed for your skills and input, love your videos my friend. Thanks for all you do.
I took a good 15 years off warhammer tbf, I did miss it but I appreciated it when I returned, Kind of, things changed... mainly the price... and fantasy was gone... and the shop was different... the man in there seemed sad... etc
Haha, yeah. That 15 year gap really hammers things home.
@MSPaints 😄 it really really does 😔
Unbelievably well said. Money/spontaneous purchasing in a hobby rarely fills that gap in happiness you're looking for. Sometimes it really is best to just sit back, take a breather and reset (somewhat, anyway).
Congratulations you did it!!!❤😂🎉 Also really loves all of your content, I always find them inspiring
Thank you for getting me into Gundam. It's been a very rewarding side hobby for the days my hands don't work very well.
So I like the idea of your experiment very much
That’s what we wish we’d all done early on! Haha. More power to you for balance!
I'm far from a frequent viewer but your warhammerless year had my favourite videos of yours
Thanks!
love your direction (no direction) the new hook, it will come, something will spark you, been looking forward to every video you make, make a bot, bash it, try to spread your hobby wings!
Thank god you’re still making videos. After losing geek gaming scenically, I don’t know if mini hobby TH-cam could survive another loss like that
Quality content as always Dave. As for the year ahead ,to quote Lewis Carroll- 'if you don't know where you're going, any road will get you there'! I took 30 years out from Warhammer, so I still have some energy for it. See you on the road!
Your cinematography was verging on Blanchistsu. Very cool. Love the content with or without GW. Keep on truckin’!
Happy New Year mate. That ending with Bill was fantastic! I've kept away from the warhammers for a few years now, and thoroughly enjoying Stargrave, Silver Bayonet, Reality's Edge etc. Small warband skirmish games are definitely my jam.
Aye good shout on the Silver Bayonet! That’s on my radar this year hopefully! And a Samurai team for Frostgrave, haven’t tried that yet!
Definitely something I'm thinking about for the start of this year, despite Christmas and my oncoming birthday likely giving me some Warhammer stuff, I want to spread my wings, but also, just get shit done (ie. Save my model money). Thanks for posting this, appreciated, Dave.
No problemo! Thanks for watching, Adam!
The irony is you’re honestly one of the best “warhammer” content creators on TH-cam… the production is stellar and the takes are always unique. Looking forward to seeing where the next step with the channel goes.
Looking forward to seeing your 2024 videos. Happy New Year.
Such an awesome video... Really appreciate the shots and comedy! Awesome stuff...
Watched. Subscribed. Looking through other vids. Recovering 40k mini-ac here. My journey has involved TTRPGs, and model agnostic rule sets. And painting random things for FUN.
You and Bill making bead bots is a video I'm very much looking forward to
See this is why I come back to all of your vids, because you are awesome. You tell it like it is, and that's sadly lacking from a lot of the others. Shine on superstar 🙌
You’re a brilliant creative. These videos are more than what you usually find here on TH-cam.
Can't stop staring at the Star Wars CCG Cloud City poster, reminds me of good times back in the day
Same here. I was into matching pilots, so cloud city wasn't my favorite expansion... but good times nonetheless! 🙂
Subscribed. Starting year of zero hobby purchases after refining my pile of potential down to the minimal required for the next project. Love the editing and intro and message
I loved the stuff you've done in 2023. I can't wait to see what you do in the collaboration with Bill Making Stuff.
Always appreciate your content. I like the variety and the videos are always entertaining. After I backed Dead Man’s Hand, I’m on the new year, no army kick! Going to happily work on whatever I feel like in my vast gray pile
"A subtractive resolution" is a wonderful idea. Especially if you're not enjoying the "more, more, more" that so many of us get stuck in.
Where can I find your sculpts?
Hey, I don't normally comment on videos but your mention of imposter syndrome compelled me - yours is the best miniature channel on TH-cam. But, just like with miniature games, and sadly most things in life, the best is rarely the most popular.
It stinks. You deserve more, but at least you've kept your soul.
Thank you for the kind words mate!
I've been following your youtube so long now, and anytime you are just diving into your own interests have been te best.
Just keep doing what youre doing, what you enjoy and more people will find you..!!
I have loved the past year of videos, and might have gotten a gunpla kit just because of you...
Much respect! Look forward to your content :) Thank you!
It was a great year Dave! I ended up following your lead and getting into the Terminator Genysis game system following one of your vids.
I bought it too!
I’m looking forward to that walking dead relaunch!
@@MSPaints I had a bunch of stuff a few years ago but sadly sold it on.
However its a chance for a fully fresh start on what is an awesome game
Man,I think i speak for everyone when i say you HANDS DOWN, have some of the best-shot videos in the entire hobby space.
Ok, but can you make a video about your new slapchop technique that make you paint like a pro a full space marine army in 24 hours tho?
Hackslop is still in development!
