Thank you for reacting to this! I’m a proud Shawol so I love it when people discover this performance. It was performed during the (edited) SHINee World DxDxD Tokyo Dome concert in 2016. I work professionally making costumes for theatre, opera, and dance so I’ve seen my fair share of opera. The maturity in his voice is astounding for is age. This performance makes me cry every time! I describe his voice as “megaphone warm honey” because of the tone and the way he projects it. It’s one of the most unique voices in the business, hands down. There’s an interview with IU in which she tells him that he has her favorite male voice in all of Kpop.
I still wouldn't call it opera, nore theater than classical. I think his larynx needs a different placing. It is still high. It is wonderful nonetheless and I agree one of the best in the world.
@@Lupita311 yeah I completely agree. I didn’t want to broach this lest other SHAWOLS dogpile on me. But thank you for saying so! His vowel and mouth shaping especially (he sings very wide) as well as lack of vibrato are not truly operatic in style. He sings this aria beautifully in his own style with impressive power. Thank you for bringing this up. I love Onew dearly and there’s no denying he knocked it out of the park on this one!
@@thespianoge I agtee. It is not which style is better, it is just the route he took with his God given talent. If he wasn't this talented no amount of training in any style would matter. I wouod call it popera, just as Dimash's style.
Onew's performance of "Nessun Dorma" was performed in 2016 as a solo stage during one of SHINee's Japanese concerts, but it is not the first time Onew (SHINee's leader) has performed this song, he has been performing it since SHINee's early days. Whether it's a performance from 2011 or this one from 2016, there isn't much difference -- his voice is a little more mature in 2016, but it was still impressive from the beginning. Onew is not classically trained in opera, but he had been training as a singer for more than 10 years when this performance took place, and he has an amazing range and understanding of his voice. He is also a musical stage actor, so he understands how to project his voice to the back of the theater and he knows how to tell a story through the performance of the song. As you know, "Nessun Dorma" is an Italian song, so I am sure he spent time studying an original version of the song, and really worked on perfecting the pronunciation of the words. He doesn't speak Italian, but he could fool you into thinking he can with this performance. ;p Onew is known for having clear and perfect diction and pronunciation when it comes to languages -- he, and all the SHINee members -- seem to have an ear for being able to pick up on the nuances, inflections and phrasing in different languages that make them seem like native speakers. It's that attention to detail that makes them that much more impressive. Onew is a member of SHINee, so of course he is an amazing singer and performer. That's why the members of SHINee are some of the most well respected singers and artists, and why they are one of the top groups in the industry. SHINee are the golden standard when it comes to live performances. It's literally known as the SHINee standard, and it's what all other groups strive to reach. If you are impressed with Onew's vocal range in this performance, just wait until you see his performance of "Friend." Onew broke the record for the longest continuous note at 40+ seconds, just because he could. I believe that this performance was at the Tokyo Dome in Japan, so there were 55,000 fans in that audience, and, yet, listen to how quiet the whole audience is. They are all just as speechless as you. :) The Tokyo Dome is one of the largest concert venues in Japan and there is an unwritten rule that in order to get permission to hold an event there you have to be able to fill it to capacity. SHINee are so popular as Japanese artists that they are one of the few acts that are actually asked by the concert promoters to hold another concert there. Most people have to ask to hold an event at the Tokyo Dome, but with SHINee, executives actually contact SM and ask them to please hold another event there. SHINee are so popular in Japan that they know they will have no problem selling out within minutes of tickets going on sale and most likely they will have to have multiple day events because fan demand will be so high. SHINee has even held fan meeting events at the Tokyo Dome that weren't even full concerts and were still able to sell out. Which just goes to show you, how popular they really are.
@@Lupita311 Yes as a I said, Onew has performed "Nessun Dorma" many time. However, I am almost positive that this specific performance is from 2016. As I said in my comment, Onew has performed this song many time over the years starting with their first concert. I'm not sure what you are trying to correct, because I think we are saying the same thing.
@@milindawilson9175 why you got so upset, what I meant was that the first time he performed it was in 2012. Back in the day on that show Star something they had two opera singers and Onew said he played at singing classical and sang a piece of it. Everyone appauded. Onew is amazing!!! 😍 I find it funny that he was the last member of SHINee that I really became interested in getting to know better and is currently my second favorite member!! 💖 This performance is one of the ones that made me pay more attention to him and I always get goosebumps when I watch it!
