I am about to make a few of these to sell at our Christmas Fair which raises money for our Community Fund. We live in a tiny village in West Wales, UK. Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom, this has made my task easier.
Here are some tips I learned when making bowl cozies: If your foot has the little black button and spring on it, push the button when you go over the darts. It levels the foot and the button will pop back out once you get back onto the flatter edges. If you don't have a foot with the black button, put a small piece of cardboard under the foot before you sew over the darts or use a jeans jig. This helps keep your stitches all the same size. Never pull your fabric through as you sew. That's what breaks needles. Also, a walking foot helps. I use a size 75 needle when sewing bowl cozies and increase my stitch length to at least 3mm/3.5mm. Ask me how I know, lol.
That cardboard trick works great and they also sell a product called a seam jumper, which is made out of plastic and has space for the needle to go through. was a game changer for me.
