I've made and sold hundreds of microwave bowls at my craft fairs. I prefer and make shaped bowls with a loop for hanging, I have hard template. I sew an X through the center, four sewn darts (different lengths for different sizes bowl base), topstitch around outside edge and sew a circle in the bowl bottom. They look great and hold up beautifully when washed and dried by machine. Others copy me at fairs and sell them for less than me, but I sell out vs. other vendors because of the fabrics, sewing and pressing I put into them (it shows!) Also, I'd not use fusible batting because of the scrim (glue that is usually petroleum based) that could be flammable. I use only 100% cotton fabrics, batting without scrim and thread and no metallics in any product. I also make plates too.
I'm glad that you back yourself and don't reduce your prices to match the competition Andie. The buyers will soon work out why some people are too cheap 😀
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs Thanks Christine. I always "shop" my competition. I don't mind others making the same things I do, I just make sure mine are the best available some how, some way. I'm my own worst critic, yet it works for me.
I'm glad I found your video, the way you make the template's is a game changer. After watching your video, I made a template for 8", 10", and 12" bowl cozies, I love them, it is so much easier, and quicker than the traditional way. I have a tip: baste the batting to the fabric before sewing it all together, yes it adds a little time to your sewing, but in the long run, you actually save time, because you aren't constantly having to readjust everything, because something moved, just be sure to use cotton thread for basting, and sew with a 1/8" seam. Thank You for sharing your time, and your talent with all of us.
haven't tried the flat ones but I am game. I sell the shaped one at craft shows and everyone likes these. some like the pointed corners and some like the rounded corners. thanks for all the tutorials. love them.
Thank you for this great tutorial. I grabbed a lot of my scraps and made 16 of these, they are so usefull.I kept 4 for myself and gifted the rest. GREAT ITEM.🥰
The template is very helpful! I need to go refresh myself on the flat cozies; I think they’d be easier to sell since they stack flat. Thanks, Christine! Great video!
Hi again Christine, I have been using my cosy in the microwave for years. It’s important to have a bowl of food in it and you must use cotton wadding and fabric as well as the cotton used to sew it. Love your tutorials. Very helpful
Pretty fabric! I’ve made hundreds of these. To save lots of time, you can stitch the four triangles, right sides together, then trim. I also leave mine with pointed corners, also saving time. They’re microwaveable if made with all cotton fabric, thread and batting.
I agree with Lisa Boutin. I sew then trim. I like to heat my food with the cozy on the bowl and longer points makes it easier to take out. I also have thought of using plastic snaps but wonder how the would work in the microwave. Finally i fold my bowl 8nto quarters to store inabasket with trivets.

Thank you for the template idea. Just before I watched this, I very reluctantly put the acrylic into a cart to purchase. Since I am not an impulsive shopper, I decided to go back to it later. I'm so glad I didn't buy it. I like both. The bowl cozies have other uses, like dry snacks and tortillas. Just put another cozy on top and it will keep warm. Adding a little basket handle will make it perfect for toddlers treats and picnics. They can be folded in half for storage. Another idea. Instead of rounding the corners, fold them out and stitch a button to keep in place. It will give it more body and maybe you can charge a little more!

They won't get lost and are readily available for the family. I think the snaps on the flat ones would drive me crazy to attach ( just me).
I prefer to make the flat ones, but people want the shaped ones at every craft fair I attend. I don’t particularly enjoy making the shaped bowls because of all the work involved. So now I only have one or two available at the events and will take orders. That way I’m only making what I know is already sold.
Hi Christine! Omg, have wanted to make these for sooo long, but didn’t want to a: decipher long boring confusing instructions, and b: didn’t have a snap tool even though I loved your snap video. This way to do this project makes it seem so much easier! You have a nice fun practical way to do things. Not only that, I enjoy watching your videos because you’re like having a fun visit with a girlfriend! Thanks my friend! See you next time!🌷😜
Hi Christina, I would prefer the flat ones for the same reasons you gave. But the shaped ones I think might sell better, because people would be drawn to the shape already done... I don't know, like you guess I would make both. Good tutorial, thank you 🌞
I make the shaped ones out of all cotton including thread so that I can use them in the microwave without worry about plastic melting or causing fumes. I use 100% cotton batting/wadding inside. Thanks for the video!
I've made these for YEARS, and never knew I could make them flat. I think I prefer your way of doing the darts in the shaped ones. I've been measuring each dart, then sewing it, and THEN cutting the extra fabric away from the dart. Your way is MUCH faster and cleaner looking. I've never done them flat - will they work in the microwave with the snaps? I bet I could make them adjustable, with two sets of snaps at each corner (we have different sized bowls).
Ive literally sewn and sold hundreds upon hundreds of these bowl cozies. I live in a small rural town with small rural towns around every direction but one. Every man, woman, and child has to have at least one per season. I sew my darts then cut them. I also use all cotton materials, including batting. I don't quilt the pieces, just the "x" to keep the batting in place. If you use 100% cotton materials and only the X for quilting, makes the bowl cozies microwavable. My customers prefer pointed edges to hold on to when removing contents from the microwave. I use bright fabrics left over from quilts. I also sew potato bags. I had no idea what they were. So, i looked it up. You make an envelope with fabric, again 100% cotton, just a couple lines of quilting. I personally have never used one. But, I sell a bunch of them. Long story short, 100% cotton is the key, else it can be flammable. 😊❤
I love your video. Best I’ve seen. That’s for the instructions four making a template. I making a larger bowl do you use the same measurements for the darts. Thank again for the great video
Very fun tutorial. I am going to make these. My boys are home schooled and we are going to go to sell at the local market. I will teach my boys to make these. So you sell for $10 is that each or 4 of them? Thanks again for your time.
Your tutorials are so easy to follow .. all your items are useful and "sell-able" .. just wanted to thank you! I watch your videos over again every month or so and each time I get so many ideas .. now I'm thinking to make the shaped bowl cozies in holiday prints for gifting .. making them a bit smaller and filling them with candy then wrapping in cellophane with a bow. Nice gift to keep on desk at work, or the coffee table, etc. You are a very smart business lady and excellent seamstress!! p.s. Also thinking to make the playing card holders!!
I’ve made some in the past but was told by a friend who sells and sews to only use 100% cotton, fabric and cotton batting (NO SCRIM) preferably wrap and zap to avoid a fire if using in the microwave. I’ve only made them with everything 100% cotton including the thread. I’m interested to know if everything you used is 100% cotton, (no scrim) in your project. Thanks for your video your my favorite teacher and love how you let us know cost and time vs selling price! Your great!
I do use cotton fabric, and mostly use the cotton batting too. I however, tell my customers thet they're not for use in the microwave, rather for use after it comes out, and for ice cream too. I'm probably over cautious, but am terrified someone will burn themselves if a bowl slips from the cozies whilst coming out. Particularly if it's in a higher position 😀
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs Hi Christine, thanks for your reply. Here in Florida most are microwaveable. Hi, Judy here, wondering if you have ever made a bag for a mahjong set. My hard case is crumbling and I see lots of lovely bags online that are way too pricey for my budget. I have all the materials I need to make a bag, but not sure exactly how to proceed. Would love to see a tutorial on this as I can't find any tutorial online for mahjong bag. Thanks so much. I'm really enjoying your videos, and I'm sure I'll be making many of your ideas as time goes by. You are so talented and creative ❤️. Thanks.
Hi Christine! First, I'm a new subscriber and I thank you for your enjoyable videos! Second, I'm wondering if the plastic snaps would melt in the microwave? I think I'd be concerned about that? BTW, I enjoyed your tour of your quaint little shop!
Hi Nana Jill. Welcome! I have to say, I don't know personally how the plastic snaps hold up in the microwave as I use them after heating, so I asked mum who uses the same, and she puts hers in without problems. I'm a bit of a negative Nancy in that I don't recommend that they go in the microwave at all. I have horrid visions of hot bowls slipping out of the cosies as they come out.😁
Hi Christine - I’ve made heap’s but never thought to make a pattern. I’ll make one now so thanks for the demo. I like the bowls with darts the best. Are the snaps ok in microwave?
I would love for you to show how these could be made for different size bowls or plates, figuring out depth and length of darts is not my strong point. I like the shaped bowl cosies. Not sure why. They would be great for caravanning in lieu of placemats etc
Hello! I LOVE your videos! I learned so much. A question: what type of labels do you buy? I bought some from the same company you buy them from, but I'm not sure they are the correct ones. Thank you.
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs thank you! I got the right ines then, just too small to sew all sides. Thank you for your reply. I made the expandable bags smaller and they look adorable!
I use "wrap and zap" batting on my microwave bowl cozies. This fusible cotton batting, can it work as well as when heating soups, stews, etc. without burning your hands?? I would much rather use the fusible cotton batting, wrap and zap can be uneven(bulky)in some areas, so I tend to waste some of the wrap and zap.
It's probably just me Cristina, but I've never recommended people actually put the cozies in the microwave. This comes after seeing accidents with young children, and the bowl tipping or slipping from the cozies, especially when too high. I've had many near misses myself 😀
I have the same problem with the wrap and zap, especially if you soak it and preshrink it. Sometimes I even have trouble top stitching at the end because it’s so thick that my machine sometimes has trouble with it. Any tips or suggestions???
I thought storage of the shaped bowl cozies was the original purpose for the cozies. In other words to put between your bowls in the cupboard to prevent chips and dings. I use thrifted nicer dishes as everyday items and they do get chipped and cracked on occasion. So I suppose the shaped cozies could also be dual purpose like the flat ones.
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs Small town girl. I'm in Hobart. I really enjoying getting inspiration from your videos so keep ding them. Ever decide to take a trip to Tassie, message me, i have a spare bedroom
As a consumer/ customer I would prefer the shaped ones, less work for me. I have two shaped bowl cozies, given to me by other craftspeople. I store them flat myself, because they are fabric and store flatish, perhaps not as flat as the snapped ones, but flat enough for our small kitchen.

I’ve made these before. But I’m going to try and make the ones with the snaps. I think I may prefer those over the other ones.
See you next time!🌷😜
Haha, I love that Tina. I'm usually the one being naughty 😀
Thank you for sharing! I think both the flat and the bowl would be great to have! ❤️
I think so too!
Wow, cool, I need to find the one with the snaps. It's easier to store. Thanks for sharing
Much easier Doris. I like the flat ones best😀
Thank you for the video. I’ll be making a few for Christmas presents.
That's a great idea Rita😁
Hi Christina,
I would prefer the flat ones for the same reasons you gave. But the shaped ones I think might sell better, because people would be drawn to the shape already done... I don't know, like you guess I would make both. Good tutorial, thank you 🌞
I agree Karen. The shaped ones will definitely sell better 😀
flat for me but i do own the other type they were a gift love that you share the how to make a pattern
Glad you like them Maxine 😀
I make the shaped ones out of all cotton including thread so that I can use them in the microwave without worry about plastic melting or causing fumes. I use 100% cotton batting/wadding inside. Thanks for the video!
Thanks Janelle 😄
I've made these for YEARS, and never knew I could make them flat. I think I prefer your way of doing the darts in the shaped ones. I've been measuring each dart, then sewing it, and THEN cutting the extra fabric away from the dart. Your way is MUCH faster and cleaner looking. I've never done them flat - will they work in the microwave with the snaps? I bet I could make them adjustable, with two sets of snaps at each corner (we have different sized bowls).
What a great idea Linda😀 I'm told they're fine in the MW, but I use mine after the bowl comes out
Thank you thank you for showing us how to make the template. Mine were looking goofy. Take care. Marion in Oregon
You are very welcome Marion. Thank you😁
Great video. Thanks for the direction for making the template ❤️
You're very welcome Mary 😀
I love those potato bags. They work great 😀
Great video. Sure looks easier than I’ve been doing them. Thank you
Thanks Linda😀
I love your video. Best I’ve seen. That’s for the instructions four making a template.
I making a larger bowl do you use the same measurements for the darts.
Thank again for the great video
Thanks Mary. It depends on the size difference, but I'd try another ½" 🙂
I like the flat ones the Best. That way you can use them with most sizes of bowls and plates saucers, cups which ever
Exactly my thoughts Wanda 😄
I agree the shaped ones are so tedious to sew. I'll look at your other tutorial -- thanks!
Thanks Lori 😊
Love this. I'm definitely going to try one of these. ❤
Please do! They're very easy 😁
Very fun tutorial. I am going to make these. My boys are home schooled and we are going to go to sell at the local market. I will teach my boys to make these. So you sell for $10 is that each or 4 of them? Thanks again for your time.
That's a wonderful idea Patricia. Mine were $10 au each😃
Clear plastic cutting mats from the dollar store are fabulous as template plastic. Two mats per package.
Thanks Ann😀
Your tutorials are so easy to follow .. all your items are useful and "sell-able" .. just wanted to thank you! I watch your videos over again every month or so and each time I get so many ideas .. now I'm thinking to make the shaped bowl cozies in holiday prints for gifting .. making them a bit smaller and filling them with candy then wrapping in cellophane with a bow. Nice gift to keep on desk at work, or the coffee table, etc. You are a very smart business lady and excellent seamstress!! p.s. Also thinking to make the playing card holders!!
That sounds like a lovely gift idea Esperanza. Thank you 😀
I’ve made some in the past but was told by a friend who sells and sews to only use 100% cotton, fabric and cotton batting (NO SCRIM) preferably wrap and zap to avoid a fire if using in the microwave.
I sell mine for $15 but one gal I met in a fabric store sells them for $8 and I suspect she may not make them for the microwave. Her big seller is totes, since she lives near the beach. I love your channel and often recommend you to anyone who sews! 😁.Your very authentic and refreshing and I find those rare qualities in our changing world. Thank you for being there for us all.
Thanks.
Hi Judy, I'll give this some thought. I have a couple of ideas milling about in myt head. It's been added to my list 😁
Thanks Janice. As far as I know, the snaps are ok, but I don't recommend putting the cosies in the microwave for safety reasons.😃
I would love for you to show how these could be made for different size bowls or plates, figuring out depth and length of darts is not my strong point. I like the shaped bowl cosies. Not sure why. They would be great for caravanning in lieu of placemats etc
That's a great idea Rachel. 😀
I like both of them. Have you ever made some for plates?
No, To be honest, I've never considered it Rose. I usually just make the 10" squares for bowls.
Hi Christine. I love your bowl cozies. I looked for your video on making the flat cozies but was unable to find it. Can you help me with that? Thanks.
Absolutely Sheryl. Here it is th-cam.com/video/btLcitR-3P4/w-d-xo.html 😀
These templates go for 14.99 each! I refuse to pay that kind of money! Thank you for these template I can figure out the bigger size myself
Thanks Linda. That was exactly why I did the video. So others wouldn't have to purchase templates😁
Hello! I LOVE your videos! I learned so much. A question: what type of labels do you buy? I bought some from the same company you buy them from, but I'm not sure they are the correct ones. Thank you.
Robi, I use the "classic woven labels", but you can really use whatever works for your products. Mine aren't cotton, I learned this the hard way 🤣
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs thank you! I got the right ines then, just too small to sew all sides. Thank you for your reply. I made the expandable bags smaller and they look adorable!
Awesome thank you
Amazing.
Thanks Carolyn 😃
Great video, TY!! My question is... what kind of snaps do you use if someone uses them in the microwave...
I use plastic snaps Eva, but I don't use my cozies in the M/W 🙂
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs Thank you for the reply, I don't either but I have friend that put the bowl with cozy in the Mic-w.. again TY! and stay safe
I am new here. So nice and a wonderful gift for Christmas. TFS. 😍
Thank you Carol. Welcome 😀
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs I've never had that problem with my customers buying my bowl cozies over the years. Thank goodness.
I have the same problem with the wrap and zap, especially if you soak it and preshrink it. Sometimes I even have trouble top stitching at the end because it’s so thick that my machine sometimes has trouble with it. Any tips or suggestions???
Would the glue in the fusible fleece pose a problem in the microwave? Also, where do you get microwavable snaps??
I don't recommend putting them in the microwave at all Alexandra. Rather put the hot bowl in the cosie to keep from burning your hands later😁
Thank you!
You're welcome Maggie 😀
I thought storage of the shaped bowl cozies was the original purpose for the cozies. In other words to put between your bowls in the cupboard to prevent chips and dings. I use thrifted nicer dishes as everyday items and they do get chipped and cracked on occasion. So I suppose the shaped cozies could also be dual purpose like the flat ones.
I had never even thought of doing that. What a great purpose 😀
Thank you Christine. Loved your video. What part of Australia are you. I'm in Tassie.
I'm in Nagambie Vic Pamela 😀
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs Small town girl. I'm in Hobart. I really enjoying getting inspiration from your videos so keep ding them. Ever decide to take a trip to Tassie, message me, i have a spare bedroom
@@pamelagahan5601 oh wow, thank you Pamela. That's so kind ☺️
Always use the batting made for heat, cotton thread and 100% cotton fabrics. Using anything else can catch fire in the microwave.
That's correct Barrie😁
I was thinking couldn't a person round the corners on the flat one so the corners don't stick up so high??? thank you for the template.
Is there a video for the tapestry zipper bags
Yes Kit. This is it th-cam.com/video/KhumF6XBZXA/w-d-xo.html 🙂
Will the darts be the same width and length if I want mine 8 or 12 inch bowls?
Georgia, if you make the darts wider and longer, you'll have a deeper bowl😀
As a consumer/ customer I would prefer the shaped ones, less work for me. I have two shaped bowl cozies, given to me by other craftspeople. I store them flat myself, because they are fabric and store flatish, perhaps not as flat as the snapped ones, but flat enough for our small kitchen.
Yes, they do squash down easily Celeste. My customers prefer them too 😄
do you find them to last, it seems always get a drip on them and hard to get it out.
I've had mine for years. Stains and all😃
Thank you
A pleasure as always Cynthia 😀
Thanks
Thank you so much Rachael 😀
Can you microwave the cozy with the snaps?
You can microwave the snaps Mary, but I don't recommend anyone using the cozies in the M/W for safety reasons. I've seen people slip with hot food
What kind of pen is that you are using for the markings.
Sherry, it's a Sewline fabric pen
Looking for the video for the flat ones. Where can I find it
Here it is Teresa th-cam.com/video/btLcitR-3P4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=2wVoDYmcH8ZHJlKL 😁
The link to the Peltex - is that 100% cotton so it can be used in the microwave? How thick is the Peltex?
Peltex isn't cotton Geri. You'll need to source cotton batting if you plan on using it in the microwave😀
That's what I thought, but wanted to clarify. Love your instructions@@ChristinesHomeAffairs
NOT fusible batting, use Wrap N’ Zap microwave safe batting!
Thanks SM😀
I didn't hear the size to cut the squares, is it possible to get that please?.
They're 10" ssquares 😃
All cotton making these?
Yes Eve, otherwise you shouldn't put them in the MW 😀
What kind of snaps?
I use the plastic Kam snaps Nicie😁
