Matt, we have huge respect and gratitude to our hundreds of thousands of viewers and fans. Of course when someone calls us "assholes" we return the favor. Deal with it!
Roman and Nate do a great job of informing the general car buyer of what they can expect of the vehicle that they are reviewing. Stop over analizing every little detail and take it for what it's meant to be.
Thanks for the comment Scott. You may want to check your facts. Plug-hybrid tech is brand new while diesel engines are....If we have to explain it we're probably wasting our time answering this comment.
I leased a Cmax energy. in the video you said the Cmax can go 40 miles on a charge. the manufacturer states a 21-22 mile range. I would get 21 in the summer and 11 in the Michigan winter. I have a Golf TDI and a Chevy Cruze Diesel. they are much more economical for distance driving
ur guys videos are so much more enjoyable & uplifting after or during a long day at work. Other automotive reviewers are too serious & straightforward & predictable. I enjoy your real world spontaneity
the C-Max is one of those rare vehicles where the project name actually becomes the vehicle name. I got to see one of the pre-production models and my large frame felt very comfortable in the car.
Hey, you guys don't have to make any excuses for Mash-ups. They are cool and people potentially cross shop similar but different vehicles. Every other online car review site does direct comparisons. TFL is the only one doing Mash-ups. Why not? It's different, they are interesting, and many times it actually makes sense.
Test drove the Cruze yesterday for 10 minutes. Unfortunately it was the base model with the 1.8L engine. The car I drive right now is a 2009 Pontiac G5 and I am shocked how similar how both cars feel when it comes to throttle response and braking. The steering feels totally different vs. my G5. Found the steering really light on the Cruze which is very nice, but when I got back into my car, it felt sooo heavy. Would love to own the 1.4L Turbo Cruze one day.
Diesel powered cars in Europe are usually rated at 50-60 mpg combined (some as high as 70 mpg!). It seems that diesel cars in the US are rated much lower. Are the US diesels truly less effecient? Or does it have to do with fuel quality? Or the way fuel economy is rated?
Nathan says the C-Max energi can run 40 miles electric-only on a full charge at 1:40. That doesn't sound right. All other reviews I've read or seen rates the C-Max energi at about 20 miles of electric-only range. ???
Nathan, all scientific data aside, Do U enjoy driving the Cruze? Do U feel it would be a reliable car for the long haul? I really love that Cruze and want to make it into a Taxi cab in Atlanta! I may have asked U this before! Love your show! Where did the Lincoln Mark 5 go, have not seen it in a while!
It's a mashup. Roman, and Nathan do just fine showing most interested buyers what to expect and what is out there with their own personal feedback. Do your own scientific channel if you want more precise tests and let Roman and Nate
I agree. They are notoriously half-assed. Why didn't they bother to mention what MPG they got? Also, do they know that until a car reaches normal operating temperatures it is in a much less efficient mode?
Something I forgot to mention for my last comment. Even though the U.K. and U.S. mpg is measured differently, once you do the conversion for a particular car, the mpg ratings is higher anyway, even when converted to U.S mpg. Based on that, I'd say that U.S diesels sips more than the European equivalents.
Very true. However the same thing that makes it cost more (as you made very clear) is also detrimental to the type "test" you are conducting without allowing it to justify itself. Like I said earlier, a very easy way to remedy this discrepancy in the comparison (MPG anyway) would be to just run the C-Max without a passenger - driver only - canceling out the "expensive" 260 pounds of equipment you decided to disable for this particular exercise. I like the videos, just try to be more scientific.
DinosaursOnceRuled Most of Europe uses liters, not gallons, so fuel efficiency is measured differently. However, in the UK, they use MPG but their gallons are around 160oz (vs 128oz in the US), so the MPG ratings will be higher (more fluid per mile). A car rated at 60 MPG in the UK translates to 48 MP_US_Gallon.
Yeah. I drive far less than 40 miles a day. I drive about 5 miles each way to work. Something like this would be perfect. The c max is much more refined with much better sound insulation than the prius for well. My current car is a 2001 mustang gt.
The mpg in U.K. miles is different from the U.S measurement mpg. The U.K. uses the Imperial measurement system that is different from the U.S Customary. It is common to see that cars in Europe get 50-70 mpg, but in our miles it would probably be 37-50 mpg. It's hard to judge now because there are hardly any passenger diesels here in the U.S. For comparison, the U.S. Highway mileage for the Chevy Cruze Diesel is 46 mpg. The U.K. mileage for the same car is 55.2 mpg. The ratings are different.
I'm not so sure about the idea of the C-Max Energi not being fully charged. If you're going to buy upfront for a plug-in and not charge it up every night, then that alone really defeats the purpose of getting a Plug-In rather than a normal hybrid equivalent. I could understand that it'll be more confusing to add up the costs of fuel and electricity together, but if not, then why not test the regular C-Max? Hell, we'll wait and see till Part 2.
I just helped a friend buy a C-Max... non-energi model. It's actually a really nice car, BUT, it has little quirks, it feels sort of like all modern Fords in that it feels as if too much was trying to be crammed into an affordable package. So, it lacks refinement. Also, being first model year, I am concerned with potential reliability issues down the line. I'd stick with a Prius for now. BUT, down the line, the C-Max might win out.
Obviously the plug-in hybrid is the game-changing new technology here, not the diesel. A plug-in hybrid is a possible solution to the very real problem, that the world is running out of oil. Because it can replace not 100% but maybe 90% of the fuel, you use, with electricity. Which can be produced in many other ways than burning oil. Is it financially competitive at current US fuel prices? Probably not for most people. But there is always a cost of being a "first mover".
Speaking of 1/2 assed and whatnot... Did you see the "Ike gauntlet" they did with the Tundra, F-150 & the Silverado?? It drove me friggen NUTS. Admittedly I'm a Ford guy 100%, and in the 2nd episode of that 3-part series, the F-150 wasn't even trying but they refused to let it embarrass the other 2 trucks. Hell, the Toyota & Chevy (both with much larger engines) could barely do the speed limit while the Ford might've got close to triple digits had they opened it up like they did the other 2...
Yup. They kind of just do reviews on a whim... maybe if they had a checklist of some sort before every vid, they would be better at informing everyone of the details.
I think they do too many videos for any of them to be really top quality. I liked the Ike Gauntlet vids and I think they had to keep under the speed limit since they were hauling a trailer around other cars in traffic. However, they could use some polish to their work and I think that limiting the number of vids they produce could go a long ways to accomplishing that.I also seem to remember they badmouthed the F-150's fuel efficiency than got proven wrong later. I'm not sure what that was about
If you're not going to charge the C-Max Energi the C-Max Hybrid gets better gas mileage 43 Energi to 47 Hybrid. And it costs $29k for SEL and $26k for SE.
I know, it kinda bothers me too. It's because the Ford runs on electric only for the 1st 40 miles. They fail to mention how the C-Max Plug-in can be used as a 99% EV for many people. A high percentage of Americans drive less than 40 miles per day - my family for example. When I read articles about EVs, there's always the mention of "how it can only go so far on a charge"... Very few times (if ever) have I read how an EV's range is adequate for most people. --There's too much money to be lost.
Those of us that get tired of insurance/law enforcement breathing down our necks for a few mph over at the bottom of a hill... hence the Geo Prizm now I have lol, where the speed limit is a good goal to achieve when going up hill.
...the plug-in version if the C-Max weighs 259 pounds more than the non-plug-in version. Rather than using the extra battery capacity of the Ford as a double handicap (price & fuel-efficiency), why not run it thru your test without a passenger? That will cancel out the inherent inequality nature of this test.
This being a "mash"-up, I guess there isn't any "proper" way to compare their mileages, but it still feels pretty 1/2 assed. If you're going to read window stickers and drum on the fact the Ford costs 10K more, why then exclude from the test the REASON it costs more?? It just seems pretty bias in favor of the Cruze if you ask me. The C-Max PLUG-IN's major selling point is it being an EV for the 1st 40 miles - that's why it costs more & WEIGHS more. That extra weight only hurts if it can't help.
I never said a thing about "dishonesty". It just really burnt my ass how the test was "conducted" - the F-150 was/is FAR superior to the other trucks but you guys for whatever reason, held it down to the level of the other two. If you were going for a towing/speed contest (torque sprint), I'm sure you could've found a more realistic way of testing the pulling power rather than having all 3 pull at the same speed - why even time it? What was the point? -I say have them pull 7 tons down the strip.
When you compare the sticker price on these cars, are you also mentioning the $7,500 fed tax credit that gets taken off the cost? That brings these two a lot closer.
In the real world who the heck drives the speed limit? It would be helpful if you guys got the results of the normal 5-10 mph above the speed limit that most people will do.
You guys couldn't even get the milage differerence calculated correctly and you expect us to buy that you know how "old" either of these cars are in technology means?
WRONG on "new vs old" tech. The Chevy arguably has newer technology in it's design than does the Ford. Sure Diesels are older, but this is NOT an older Diesel. And you guys are supposed to know cars... Gees...
As much as I like the mashups, it really does defeat the purpose of the plug-in to run it like a regular hybrid when making a price comparison, as well as the diesel in traffic and not on an invigorating flat stretch run through Texas without stopping in any shit towns along the way.
Diesel is not cheaper in Europe, Roman. It's the same price as petrol and high performance diesel is more expensive than petrol. Also, to get your facts straight in real world a diesel engine car in Europe does about 6l/100km in average, that is around 35-40 MPG.
If you guys are mashing up these two cars why would you not allow the Cmax to have a full charge but still talk about its price compared to the Cruze?!? Why not just compare a regular Cmax to the Cruze? Guys you know I love you but this video made no sense. There was just to much filler that we didn't really need to see like the gas station???
You guys are the one that needs to check facts. First, electric powered cars have been around for almost as long has cars have been around. A hybrid is just a slight difference in how the electricity is made and used. And hybrid itself is decades old as it is. Plus, this diesel is NOT the diesel's of years ago. There's actually more "new" to this diesel than there is "new" in the hybrid you guys used to test. AGAIN, really stupid that you even tried to use that analogy.
Same here. My mill is 6 miles away and my wife's is 4 miles. The way our clock in/clock out times fall, we can actually use 1 car to get us both to & from work every day - we did it for a while. If we hadn't bought our '09 Focus 3 years ago, we would've went with the electric model (100 mile range give or take). It has always smelled fishy to me - the way the media cuts up EVs for "only" going 40, 60 or a HUNDRED miles on an overnight charge. EVs are adequate for the vast majority of Americans.
These guys wonder why the comments on their video are so critical of them. Good god, they're assholes to their audience. What kind of good channel tells their audience to "deal with" whatever video they're making?
On electric that C-Max doesn't do 40, it does 20 miles ..... and this video is pointless and both these guys are dorks ...... this is just entertainment .........

These mashups are awesome. There's a lot more info here than watching separate reviews of both cars. Keep them coming! thanks.
Let them do their thing without you haters crying.

C-Max Energi Federal Tax Incentive - almost $4000, maybe even some state incentives. Don't think diesels get tax rebates?
ur guys videos are so much more enjoyable & uplifting after or during a long day at work. Other automotive reviewers are too serious & straightforward & predictable. I enjoy your real world spontaneity
Can you guys please do a fusion and accord hybrid comparison for the 2014 models???
Even though mashups aren't equal I'm looking forward to part 2.
the C-Max is one of those rare vehicles where the project name actually becomes the vehicle name. I got to see one of the pre-production models and my large frame felt very comfortable in the car.

Correct, rated mileage is 19 miles on the battery.
Sadly, both cars no longer made. He paid 3.79 a gallon 8 years ago and today that price is 5.35 per gallon for diesel. Thanks Joe!!!
I like their videos so I'm not trying to be critical, just wanted to point out the cost is closer than at first glance comparing the stickers.

can you do a mashup of the best fun to drive compact cars
That cruze has as much torque as my 96 grand marquis with a v8. It's amazing how far we've come in the past 17 years
And the us chevy cruze diesel also is tuned a little differently and has a urea fluid to get the emissions lowered.
I agree. They are notoriously half-assed. Why didn't they bother to mention what MPG they got? Also, do they know that until a car reaches normal operating temperatures it is in a much less efficient mode?
I DID notice the same thing! Even though i think Nathan is actually fond of Ford products!
Good job, "Its a mashup...deal with it!!"
I did notice there are quite a few porto potty trucks in that town...haha.
THAT I would PAY to see.

@DinosaursOnceRuled- The gallons are smaller in US than they are in UK. That's why UK cars get more miles per gallon.
Yes, but I love the Cruze Eco - it's the best in my book.
Leaf vs Volt vs C-Max??
Love the comparison
TFL you rule!
Usually i like the way yall do ur tests but im havin a hard time understanding why u didnt have the energi fully charged.
sounds like a lovely place for cars
can you guys please review the nissan titan it's so underrated please review it

Keep in mind in the city the cmax energi tramples the diesel in city fuel economy.
$3.35/gal for regular? Where's that at?!! Lucky! Greetings from NorCal! Love your channel, guys!

Price doesn't make a lot of sense in this comparison. If you're not going to use the plugin aspect of the cmax you can get one for 26000.
You do realize that imperial gallons are not the same as US gallons, right? And the only the UK uses MPG, the rest of Europe uses L/100km.
Those of us that get tired of insurance/law enforcement breathing down our necks for a few mph over at the bottom of a hill... hence the Geo Prizm now I have lol, where the speed limit is a good goal to achieve when going up hill.

Interesting how the price dropped a little bit in that time. 8/10ths of a gallon of time :P
I gotta 2015 Ford Fiesta and I'm getting 38 MPG in PA .

A gallon of diesel costs about $8 in Europe (1.5 euro / liter).
When nathan exits out his cmax, it says beep beep
Guys when you pay $3.79/US gallon this costs us in the UK equivalent to $8.64 here.
We pay way more than you guys. Need to check your facts!
When you compare the sticker price on these cars, are you also mentioning the $7,500 fed tax credit that gets taken off the cost? That brings these two a lot closer.
Too bad the torque delivery only pulled it to a 13-second 0-60mph in their previous vid.
Edit: Looks like the fed tax credit is $3,750. So they're a little less than $4,000 apart in price.
In the real world who the heck drives the speed limit? It would be helpful if you guys got the results of the normal 5-10 mph above the speed limit that most people will do.
Electric cars have been around forever too.
if you guys weren't going to charge the vehicle than you should have compared it to the much cheaper cmax hybrid.
You guys couldn't even get the milage differerence calculated correctly and you expect us to buy that you know how "old" either of these cars are in technology means?
And how about a ride on an enginecycle? All funning aside, though, according to the encyclopedia Francisco is right.
We nearly saw the code for your credit card ;) BE CAREFULL !
