She's right. After writing fanfic for years, I've recently decided to sit down and try to write an actual, honest-to-God book with the eventual end-goal of publishing it for actual money. In order to do that, I had to stop treating writing like a hobby and start treating it like work - 1500 words a day, minimum.
And when you start treating something like a job, it's not long before it starts FEELING like a job. I try to give myself weekends off to avoid burnout, but even then, I low-key dread Monday morning just like everybody else.
On the bright side, it's hard to argue against results. I've written about 90,000 words so far. If I keep up my current pace, I should be done by the end of the Summer, unless Writer's Block decides to show up and kick my ass again.
And of course, while I have days where it's a real struggle to reach that daily word quota, I also have days where I get so into my writing that I end up breezing past that quota without even really trying to. I get good days and bad days, like in any other job.
TL;DR - Even if you love your job...it's still a *job.*

@@AcidiFy574 it is. But the mentality is the 'turn it into a career' bit. You do a hobby for your own benefit. You work to other's benefits and get paid based on that.
You CAN turn your hobby into work but know that 1. It's no longer just for you and 2. You will need a new hobby.
Many don't and just think they can be paid doing their hobby. Thus either they don't get paid or they sacrifice what they want you do for others.

"Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life" sounds very enticing, but even one's dream job can be riddled with annoyances and boring work
even if one lands that dream job, one might find less enjoyment than they thought they would get; or even if they do enjoy it a lot, they can’t help but think "it's still work and really tedious"

This exactly. I'm a professional artist. I am able to pay all my bills and live comfortably off of what I make as an artist, but it's definitely work.
In some ways, being a creator (or just being self employed at all really) is harder than a 9-5. Sure, we set our own schedule and do what we love, but we also often work 16 hours a day, marketing, meetings with clients, sketching/painting/finalizing, it's endless. There's also no one to pick up the slack if we need to take a sick day, it's brutal.
I still wouldn't trade it for an office job, and I know I have it better than most, but it's not all fairytales and sunshine either.

Which is why the happiest people aren't those who land their dream jobs and live the dream life, it's those that can enjoy themselves in quite literally any situation. The funnest people make typewriting seem like a blast, and they are a pleasure to talk to, unless you like calling anyone knowledgeable a nerd, that is.

    • @mndlessdrwer
      @mndlessdrwer ปีที่แล้ว +5

Honestly, my dream job has a 10% entertaining and complicated work to 90% boring shit ratio. It's fun to learn new things and challenge yourself, but you cannot sustain that kind of workload indefinitely and you absolutely need a fair amount of just boring busywork to let your brain decompress and sort through the new memories you made while resolving the complicated stuff.
Quite frankly, as long as you don't hate the subject matter and you can pick up the knowledge fast enough, then any job that pays reasonably well and gives you an appropriate balance of challenge to boring work can become your dream job. I used to work for a licensing enforcement branch of my local government and there were literally only two parts of that job that I disliked: the pay and needing to talk on the phone to people. Not gonna lie, if there was a good way to resolve those two problems then I'd be content to work there for the rest of my life. It is very fulfilling to gain a mastery over a skill and branch of knowledge while basically doing busy work for the majority of the day.

Being your own boss means you’re not able to take it easy, a lot of people think that if you become a TH-camr you don’t have to worry about going to work on time or being late but you still worry about those things. The only difference is that instead of a random person yelling at you for being late or not doing something right it’s you and only you. I found this particular fact out for myself after getting work as an overnight clerk in a gas station some years back; staying up all night, chatting with randoms, or just fucking around was FUN as a kid/teen/young adult because I was not paid to do it.
Forced to stay up late, into the early morning because I AM OBLIGATED TO AS PER MY JOB... is significantly less fun.
Also the lack of a decently sized monitor and easy access to the internet kind of kills the fun factor :P
Makes me a bit reluctant to shoot down my teenage nephew's dreams of being a vet/rancher/homesteader/pro-gamer/skateboarder content creator, for all that i feel like he could use a dose of... reality lmao

If I may, when I was doing video editing and story writing as a hobby, that I was and still am super passionate about, I was so happy doing it. Now that I've went to college and done free lance work, it's definitely a drag and tedious. I still love doing it, but there are sleepless night, and times where I have to cancel on friends and parties. Everything has a con, so know what you're getting into.

In that feed there were other VTubers saying the mom was not wrong being upset and laying down the law about the collge fund. (Apparently the girl wanted to use it for her debut)
Thing is in being a VTuber you need other skills of some sortPunkalopi is an aspiring stand up commedienne and has turned that into her routine as a VTuber her uncle taughter her stand up and now she is using that skill. Onigiri likes to cook, and our Prince here is a shitposting memelord with a Bit of British in her, but she has a bit of skills that she can use to entertain.

I think it's really great that Rin gives us some info on the more "back end" aspects of the job. So many people see it as just plop yourself in front of the PC and play games all day, conveniently forgetting the entertaining chat aspect of it, but all the planning, meetings, scraps in Tescos car park, slowly purchasing IKEA stock until you become majority shareholder, it's a lot to do that isn't glamorous or fun, well a ruck down Tescos might be.

I remember Mori Calliope saying something like "if you become a vtuber, you have to stream according to schedule even if you're not in the mood because this is what you decided to do for a living". And she also said that she didn't genuinely like most of the games she streamed in the first year or so. That sounds rough.

Way back when I tested the streaming waters when I was off work, and very quickly found that even with no other demands on my time I could not stick to even a light schedule. So I knew it wasn't for me, no money down. Would recommend to others considering: just stream something, talk to the empty room, edit the videos for youtube, and see if you can keep doing it and how often, then after a month see if it was workable and if you could increase your schedule to whatever a full-timer should be doing. If you can't, then stream socially or kill it off, and at least you know for sure.
I might re-try it once my health improves because that was a factor, but no way in hell I'd look into signing contracts or paying for gubbins like rigs and arts before re-running that test.

I started making content a while back and having to work on the video (scripting Mon Tue, recording Tue, editing Tue Wed Thur Fri, release Fri) is definitely a lil exhausting because of the "rather be doing something else" thing. However, I do enjoy editing lmao I can't lie despite the fact I need to spend the weekend checking analytics and weekdays making vids

This really comes down to schedule, if you upload once or a couple times a week you can essentially sit down for a couple hours playing the games you wanna play and if you’re a let’s player the time spent editing is minimal compared to most other avenues on TH-cam, I don’t make content (Mostly out of laziness and lack of necessary equipment) so maybe I’m just out of my depth but with so many easy to use editing tools compared to a few years ago content creation been easy as a casual thing. Full time though? Have fun suffering

100% correct, I’ve seen a few friends try at content creation and after a couple months they just stopped. Though it hasn’t been one of the reasons I have chosen not to. I’m good at long planning games Hoi, Eve online, satisfactory even though my duration (relatively) is short to my “history”(if you can call it that). FPS was a major hit for me but it would require lot of grinding and skill development to reach a “competent” level. It felt like a chore most of the time, but since console was limited I had little choice back then, Titanfall 2, Battlefield 1, apex, Fortnite. Never really good at them to begin with, but I stuck with them and enjoyed them in the end.

This also extends to things like being in game development. When your hobby becomes your job, it becomes incredibly hard to just merely enjoy it as a hobby. I worked in game dev for 15ish years and booooooy did I only really play two or three games regularly. Everything else was never started or one and done. But now that've I have left the industry? I've reignited my love for pokemon AND been carving a path of destruction through my steam backlogs.

Yea, I can understand that. I forgot who said it but I remember seeing a youtuber say “anyone who says that if you love your work, its never really work, is bullshitting” or smth along those lines. Which I believe to be true cuz I could never imagine being a small time youtuber and spending 13+ hours editing a 20-30 min video so it grabs peoples attention and then repeating said cycle 😅
Props to youtubers tho who stay committed and then grow and go on to do crazy cool things

As a person who rides writing another chapter is like doing hell because you have to think of everything the plot the characters how is continuing the grammar, everything else it has to match and takes the fun away from writing. Please do not turn your hobbies you enjoy into a job. It won’t be fun because a job is a job it’s not something you can just change up to make it fun forever.
