    When I had mine, I just wedged pieces of metal on each side and epoxied it solid. Saved me 30$ and didn't even have to remove haha. Held for years with great steering feel improvement

    I'm a fan of MM but their steering shafts are atleast $200! I'd rather do this. I first saw this on Premium Fuel Mag's channel but thanks for posting on the topic as well. I definately helped.

    Great tip!! Thanks for sharing. You could also cut the shaft to length so it ends in the bottom of the upper yoke sleeve instead of going so far through. This would prevent needing to do all that grinding. Also, if you don't want to weld, you can get the yoke in position on the shaft then drill and tap through both the yoke and the shaft and loctite a 1/4-28 grade-8 cap screw through both to hold it together. That's a strong connection, but if you don't trust one bolt, you can do two, opposite from each other.

    great vid. One thing I would like to say is if you are welding the u-joint on yourself don't push it in all the way & bottom it out then weld you want to leave a little space otherwise you can crack the socket from the heat expansion .

    The rack is solid mounted to the car.
    The steering column is also mounted solid with no adjustment.
    Did you measure the length of the shaft before you cut the rag joint off?
    How do you know the finished shaft is the right length?

    This is great for a k member install

    get the maximum motorsports one. THEN after its installed, loosen the bolts that hold your steering column in place and use a pry bar or something equivalent to push your steering shaft away from your header and hold it there while somebody tightens rhe steering column bolts or wedge your pry bar in there and tighten them yourself. ford actually put some adjustment into thebracket bars that hold the column in place for that exact purpose. you'll see when you loosen the column bolts, they arent in holes they're in slots that allow side to side movement.

    Quick question when u install the shaft. Did u push the shaft all the way down on the steering gear box then tight it??

    I did the maximum Motorsports shaft myself and it was a big improvement. It's still not 100% as I have driven foxes with phenomenal steering. Next step is the steering rack, if it's leaking then that will take your 50% improvement to 100%

      I replaced the steering rack in mine about 1 year ago. Another good improvement was when I replaced the steering rack bushings with MM aluminum bushings.

    So if I buy the maximum motorsports steering shaft, will it eliminate the rubber bushing that I just bought? I just bought that part so I'm going to get it installed but if the whole shaft is a better option then I might just hold off and buy that instead of replacing the rubber

    I found that the upper u joint on the steering shaft I replaced had the play in it. Not the rag joint That was for a 97 stang.

    You said to make sure you push the shaft in as far in as possible. What would make it harder to install by leaving it out slightly more? Just out of curiosity. I want to do this but what to make sure I’m doing it right

    • @Gerardo.hernandez
      @Gerardo.hernandez 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Christian Chavez if you do, it will be difficult to put the shaft back on the the rack and firewall. Leading you to take the rack off, slide the shaft and reinstalling the rack. That is if you didn’t leave the u joint out to much, in that case it just won’t fit and you won’t be able to bolt it on.

    Thanks for the info and the link. I will definitely be doing this to my 89 vert. Would you recommend cutting the excess shaft off the end instead of having it so close to the u-joint?

    • @CreateYourWorth
      @CreateYourWorth  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's really your call. The joint being replaced doesn't have that much working angle to the point where it can bind within itself. It's relatively straight. The U-joint closest to the firewall is the one that has way more working angle. Just make sure to measure everything if you're going to cut it. The way I had it, it only made the steering shalt 1/4 inch longer, which wasn't all that much. The steering rack is able to accommodate that extra length without issue. Goodluck!
