  • In 1955, the most disastrous accident in motorsport’s history occurred at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Following the accident, widespread change in the sport began. Mercedes completely pulled out of automobile racing and Switzerland even banned the sport altogether. This brings us to America, where the American Automobile Association had typically sanctioned endurance races such as the 12 Hours of Sebring. The incident at Le Mans led to the AAA pulling out of racing. Sebring would no longer be listed internationally.
The founder of the 12 Hours of Sebring, Alec Ulmann, flew to France and got permission from the FIA to create the Automobile Racing Club of Florida. The organization became a social club as much as it was a sanctioning body.
The ARCF went defunct in 1972, but has been revived in 2024 by Ford Heacock III and Charles Mendez to preserve and restore the rich history of sports car racing in Florida.
In this documentary, Ford Heacock III gives us a glimpse at the history of Sebring and explains how the new ARCF will preserve it.
