Interesting little fact: the winning car, the Jaguar D-type had disc brakes which was very innovative back then and it gave those cars a tremendous advantage over other car makers. They could stay at full throttle for longer because they could brake much later and rely on the brakes to not fade. Today all modern cars and motorcycles use disk brakes.
Have you seen The Grand Tour where Clarkson and Hampster drive around France in a D-type and an Aston Martin? Hampster loved the brakes. It was supposed to have been a brand new “old” car that never got built back in the day because of a fire.
didnt the jaguars in 55 also have disc breaks and thats what leas ti the horrific crash? with hawthorn slamming on the breaks in front of 2-3 others and them not having adequate breaks to slow+ not expecting to be break checked by a passing car on a straight
Absolutely amazing what both cars and drivers could achieve in those days. Can I recommend to anyone interested in this era of cars Simon Kidston's channel. Brilliant films about historic cars, with a sense of humour.
This is another great episode of showing the 1957 24hrs LeMans auto race and the cars. They drove it took a lot of skill and. Endurance to compete in this race of 24 hours during Darknes
The announcements and commentary by Raymond Baxter are almost certainly dubbed over, it would have been done by circuit officials in reality, being a French event with mostly French spectators, even though there would have been a fair number of Brits. The speeds are terrifying considering the brake, tyre and suspension technology of the time.
My dad raced in the motorcycle part of the competition. 1957 on a Norton 500cc. Team Dutarte-Petard. Is there any documentary about that? This short film is the closest to what I could imagine he experienced. Thank you.

My e-bike has disc brakes

My mountain bike had hydraulic discs for 20 years man
And in 1958 Jaguar introduced the first 4 wheel disc brake production sports car in the XK-150...Dunlops

Great video! Love vintage Le Mans. Cheers!

Amazing shot from White House!❤
Fantastic spectacle! ... Unlike nowadays - truly heroic but dangerous for drivers and audience..

Les 2 450 s en film....
Yay, Jaguar!
Great close up of that beautiful Omega chronograph at 1:36
From the start of this race you can instantly tell who buckled up and who didn't
The slower starting drivers sensibly took some time to light a cigarette.

Jaguar dominated Le Mans in 1957, coming in 1,2,3,4,6,
It's hard to believe they left wrecked cars on the side of the track.
Makes me wish I was there instead of here in 2021 Australia
Why? I rode some perfect 5-6 footers in front of the pines at Avoca Beach today.

i found that pronouncing it "grand pricks" is the fastest way to annoy the french in conversation. like nails on a chalkboard to them, give it a try
The French dont have a sense of humor do they?😄
@@russellloomis4376 they also hate it when you refer to your adjustable wrench as a "cwaasontHONHONHON"

I feel like hunter s Thompson watched this before penning fear and loathing, regardless of his own experiences.
9:13 for some reason this woman in stripes does not want to be seen on film….perhaps she’s shy…or is not supposed to be there with someone…?
She is time traveller talking to her mic
