    I am from Canada and grew up in the Cayman Islands in the Caribbean, so I've flown the Twin Otter many times in both countries, from island hopping to the artic. I had a relative who worked on the original aircraft. It's a fantastic utility plane and I've never felt safer on such a versatile rugged aircraft in such conditions. It's reliable. I get its smaller than people are used to, but it's very safe and dependable.

    I went to the Scilly Islands in 1982 by helicopter. But one day later, this same helicopter crashed into the sea and all dead (it did not float as they said it should)- Of course, when I returned some 10 days later to Penzance, I took the Ferry. Used the camping all these days which was very good and visited all islands and the famous lighthouse too, when it was still inhabited. Very good: the Tresco Gardens. You will need the whole day. Thanks for the video.

    That light does in fact work, it just needs to be turned on through a switch on the overhead in the cockpit “CABIN READ LGT” then that little button would turn it off if you didn’t want it shining in your face.

    Did this trip last year and an absolute pleasure to fly so easily. You can take your dog too and save a lot of time versus going by the boat particularly if it's a short stay on the Island or day trip. The MV Scillonian is a flat bottomed boat so it can rest in Harbour at low tide so is more prone to lurching or rolling in a swell.

      Unfortunately its not just the getting there that is expensive. Tresco arguably the nicest of the islands had its main hotel closed and these days the only real choice is expensive time share cottages that are in big demand. The main island St Marys is a liitle easier, but still not cheap. If you are looking for rugged remoteness Hells Bay hotel on Bryher is worth looking at.

    Paul, loved the video, as I’m watching now on the Isles of Scilly. The bit you missed (for all av geeks) is that you can walk across the runway on St Marys. A light and siren warn you of approaching aircraft. It’s always fun to be there when there is an arrival! Flown the Twin Otter a few times, but the old and now new helicopter are another experience agin (plus extra 5kg luggage allowance).

  • @PaulIsAGamer

    Loved the video, finally got to see the Isles of Scilly. Packed in a little plane going to and from it.
    From what i could see those isles are beautiful!
    Detail: did you know the Netherlands were for 335 years (1651 - 1986) at war with the Isles of Scilly?
    I didn't until a couple of months ago!
    Luckily not a single shot was ever fired and nobody died because of this war. It was the longest war ever.
    BTW it seems the inhabitants don't like to be called the Scilly Isles but like to hear the Isles of Scilly.
    Probably because Scilly sounds as silly.
    Thank you for uploading this video!

    I flew on the twin otter on the same crossing to St.Mary,s at the end of February this year the planes seats are very small but the flight is Fantastic much more exciting than flying on big planes and you see and hear the pilots as the cockpit isn't sealed.The cost of £109.50 each way from lands end is a little pricey but Everyone should do it!! And it saves 2.5 hours on a bumpy ferry !!

    I have many hours onboard the DHT. It was the lifeline from the trunk routes airports in Norway to the «Chicken fields» as the airports with a 800-meter runway was called because the minister of transport (1965-1969) name directly translates to that. Once I was so lucky to have the airplane to myself! In oct 2003 it was game over for the DHT in Norway. I flew SK MD-80 OSL-TOS-KKN. Then the WF DHT KKN-BJF-ALF. The last leg was SK on the Mad Dog ALF-TOS-OSL. It was done in about 10 hours I think. The first time I flew the DHT was summer of 1978 it was from HFT-ALF-SOJ-TOS. I was 8. The weather was CAVOK! Great vlog as always!

    • @thecaynuck4694
      @thecaynuck4694 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well, it's a utility plane built for versatility and reliability on relatively short flights. It is a pet peeve when some travellers expect every plane to be Emirates first class and the comfiest planes. I don't love when people judge planes based on comfort rather than performance, efficiency, safety, engineering, the things that matter. That's also why I get pissed when people constantly bash the CRJ-200. Sure, the CRJ-200's not comfortable, but that doesn't mean its a bad aircraft! It's made for regional travel!

    Nice video, beautiful pictures filmed.
    Aha, a Twin Otter. Do You know it is approved for some aerobatics? In a commercially flying Twin Otter the pilots did a roll being on a long final! Okey, the plane was empty, no passengers. If the pilot as allowed to do it???? I can't tell but he obviously knew how to do it.... The guy in the AFIS tower was, mildly expressed, upset....
    Once flew with quite a smaller commercial 2 engine plane for a much longer and overseas travel. Picking up the plastic covered food and seated one pilot asked if the seat belts were on. Then they started the engines. After a short while they stopped the engines and the pilot went outside with a hammer in his hand, hammering the brakes.... The handbrake was stuck.... My college said: Shit I didn't bring the large whisky with me.... We arrived safely at the destination.
    Oooh, flying at only 2000 feet. That's low. Risk for private, VFR pilots buzzing around... Any traffic control on watch?

    Great video, Paul. Question: how long is the ferry journey between Scilly and the mainland?

    • @Janeliker
      @Janeliker 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Too long! Though done it many times...2 hrs 45 minutes x 2...on a day trip I think you are longer on the boat trips than the island🤣 however you often get to see dolphins, and large jellyfish...and the sun setting over Scilly as you leave.

    That English flag should not be a part of the title. Just don't include it. If a Cornish flag was available however, use it. But since it's not, just take it out of the title.

    Would I fly in such a small plane? I've been in smaller - a float plane that did sightseeing tours above Juneau, Alaska. Can't remember its capacity, but our flight carried the pilot plus me, my wife and daughter - capacity might have been six. Our daughter, who was 9 years old at the time, fell asleep for most of the flight!

    It’s a nice video, but that’s not a tiny plane. Tiny planes are ultralights or powered parachutes. I’m not going on either of those. I did go on a Beaver in Alaska from an airport to land on a glacier on Denali. That was awesome. I guess it’s not a standard flight, as only the family of the man who pioneered the airport stays there overnight. You should try it. And while you’re there, maybe try a float plane or two.

    How bumpy were the flights? We're thinking of going but have some nervous flyers with us.
