  • The Northrop F-5E Tiger II Best of Aviation series documentary is about a lightweight multirole fighter which is an upgraded version of the F-5A Freedom Fighter. Upgrades to the engines, avionics, and structural improvements allow the F-5E to fly faster, carry more fuel and weapons, and have significantly improved sensors. All of this was done while keeping the F-5E an easy to maintain, inexpensive to fly, and highly maneuverable fighter. The F-5E is still in use today as an aggressor or adversary aircraft by the US Navy, and is still operational with over 25 countries. The Tiger II has and continues to make its mark on military aviation.

@@PilotPhotog found your channel searching for the F5. Enjoy your videos and found them to be Sub worthy. 🤪 I fly RC EDF planes and thinking about getting a F5. Might have to repaint it to the F20 LOL.
How about the upgrades to F20. Thrust Tom Wright went to like 1.14! That's amazing man. I agree... you would think the F20 could find a role. Especially in with it's short engine on to in air response time. The new avionics is so cool tool. No old school gauges. Just screens. Looks like the Falcon capsule for human flight lol.

And as good as the F-5Es are, the F-5G (re-designated F-20 Tigershark) was quite a slick, powerful jet but very similar to the performance of an F-16 Viper. A real shame our allies couldn't have used it as a more cost effective alternative to F-16s or the newer F-35s.

When I was growing up on various AFBs, the T-38 varían was always around training SR-71 pilots. I always thought the Tiger shark was better than the Falcon. Better climb and angle of attack, cheaper yo make and comparable stores. I talked to a Marine general later in my 20s about it, laid my cae for it. His reply stunned me, he agreed, then told me it was all politics. Go figure.

April 16, 2020---Was stationed in Panama (72-74) when Northrop brought down their first F-5E for display at Howard AFB. Northrop was looking to sell a bunch of 'em to Central & South American countries. There was a shit lot of brass around the planes that day. Was just getting into model building at the time so I took a bunch of photos of everything I could. Think I shot 2 rolls of 36 exposures each. There was to be a flight demonstration but because of low clouds, it wasn't done.

This illustrious plane has a fearsome combat record with all that have flown her!! South Vietnamese and later Vietnamese Air Force used them in their counter attack to over throw Pol Pot in Cambodia. Currently 75 F-5Es the Vietnamese Air Force wishes to upgrade them against the rising Chinese aircraft capabilities. The ROC used this beloved plane to maintain air supremacy over the PLA in the air battles over the Taiwan Straits in the 1970s. The Iranian Air Force used their F-5E II to combat Iraqi Air Force MiG 21s Mirage F-1s and MiG 23s with an impressive sortie rate and aerial kills! The Swiss Air Force is relegating their F-5s more to an inexpensive ground attack plane since their venerable Hawker Hunters have been decommissioned. An impressive legacy!!!

The F-20 Tigershark was a development of the F-5 series using a single f404 turbofan in place of the two GE-J85s. It also featured a superior air combat radar, cockpit layout, and HUD.
Had the end of the Cold War not flooded the market with surplus F-16s, the F-20 Tigershark might have matched the sales numbers of its elder brothers, the F-5A/B and F-5/E/F.

I'll never understand why in the early eighties we in the Portuguese Air Force were so extremely close to receive a batch of brand new F-5E - gossip said around thirty - to replace the F-86F, so close that we even received 12 T-38s to make the conversion, and suddenly ended up receiving a batch of fifty used A-7Ps - said to be A airframes with the avionics of the E but the weaker TF-30. And so we were left again without a fighter jet until the arrival of the F-16 in 1994.
Although often criticized by the Press, he A-7P was actually well liked and praised by those who flew it - one of them was a friend of mine - and of course she could fly Strike, interdiction, TASMO, CAS, and even interception missions with two AIM-9P + two 20mm guns, for lack of a better mean. I saw them fly many times, in an era when it was socially tolerated that a combat aircraft flew at 400 kts at 300 feet in peacetime, over crowded beaches! It was an absolutely impressive aircraft af low level, with great roll rate and great rate of climb if clean. Pretty smoky too. We lost a fairly large number, fourteen I believe, and as with the F-104G with the Luftwaffe no main cause could ever be ascertained. We had a lot of seagull strikes, engine failures, CFIT, oxigen induced incapacitation issues, at least one middair collision with all crew ejecting safely; many different causes. In a sad accident, a pilot tried hard to dead stick land an A-7 on her Base only to have her stall a couple of meters before the runway. He was killed.
The F-16 is a superbly safe and efficient aircraft, just think that we only lost two in 28 years, one CFIT and a major failure of the flight control system, in the test flight after the Mid Life Update. (ejected) but I'll surely miss our A-7Ps forever...

It's testimony to the superior quality and low cost to operate the F-5, that if Northrop were to restart it's F-5 line with modern cutting edge tech it would sell very well. The roll of the Tactical fighter is one of being first to fly and first to fight upon alert of the enemy. The F-5 does this better than just about any aircraft flying today. And lets be frank, the modern missiles and sensors of todays aircraft make the show boating stunt flying demonstrated in military air show just silly.

Saw one of these sitting on the tarmac the last time I was at Coronado. Beautiful aircraft to see in person. Always wondered if they could have been adapted for carrier use if a nation ever wanted to build a "light carrier". Assumed the landing speed with those small wings would be too great. Small carriers needed planes that could approach at 75 knots, IIRC.

jagreb thanks for commenting and great point. Every F -5E already has a tail hook so the only modifications needed would be to the nose wheel and likely larger flaps or wing area. The F-5 did directly lead to the F-18 so there is also that contribution to naval aviation.

Excellent! Yes, it's still viable. A replacement may be the F16. The F/A18 legacy is likely too maintenance intense (I worked on these in the late 80's. Avionics). The Superhornet has better maintenance but might be a bit large for the role at this time. So I think F16 would make a good replacement in the future.

    Very well explained 👍
F-5E is an amazing feat of engineering 👌👏
    Can Northrop Reincarnate F-5E into F-5NE (N - Navy , E - Export) with following improvements:
    Top speed - Mach 1.6
    Strengthened Landing Gear & Undercarriage
    Arrester Hook
    Folding Wings
    Mordern Avionics
    Improved Radar for BVR
    Inflight refueling
If F-5NE Can be made it can be operated from Light Aircraft Carriers (e.g. USS America type) & Amphibious Assault Ships (e.g. Juan Carlos Class , Mistral Class , Canberra Class) , as it would be valuable, low cost, Light Fighter for STOBAR Light Carriers for Export Markets.
