This stuff is extremely helpful man, thank you for making these! I'll be watching them all eventually. I just joined NoDo on PC, we had an excellent session yesterday with a playlist of your races. Would love to see you drop by and show the master race some love dude!
Thank you for this. I was looking for driving tutorial videos that were not too specific to one game and I'm sure this racing school will help me remembering the basics. thx for doing this.
Ah this helped me a lot XD I started doing practice runs on Cutting Coroners in GTA Online with my Nissan GT-R (Elegy) and my time has improved from 1:05 to 0:59 in about 15 laps. First i tried performing the racing line correctly, but the braking killed me, and once i got the hang of that I was able to outrun anyone on the track. As long as they werent dicks and didnt just try to ram me of course, thank god for non-contact... It lets you focus on the road rather than getting hit by players. Before now i tried drifting sometimes, and looking back on it, it really butchered my times.
nice video theres so much to coment on this ! this explanation is very simple and will help 90% of the everyone! So i l just get to the other 10%. THE BIGEST FLAW OF IDEAL BREAKING IS THAT IF THE OPONENTS CAR IS IN BETER CONDITION HE WILL EVENTUALY OVERTAKE YOU BY COPYING WHAT YOU ARE DOING. THIS MEANS LEARNING TO USE WIERD RACING LINES/BREKING POINTS WILE GETING GOOD/CONSISTENT TIMES WILL INSTEAD TROW A FASTER OPONENT OFF BY CONFUSING HIM WITH POOR AND CONSTANLY CHANGING RACING LINES AND GOOD TIMES, AND ITS AN ABSOLUTE NIGTHMARE FOR PEOPLE THAT CAN ONLY THINK ONE WAY OF DRIVING IS THE BEST THERE IS. EVER WONDERED WHY FIRST PLACE RARELY GETS THE FASTEST LAPS? THIS IS KEY OF THE REASON WHY! Breaking later then ideal is actually better to cars that tend to oversteer! speacialy 4 wheel drives with the best griping tires. This will overload your tires and cause then to be spent faster, but it should be great for overtaking and races with very few laps.It can benefit times speacily when your racing line is not ideal namely when you have cars by your side. Breaking sooner then ideal is better when your car tends to understeer(front wheel drives in general), it does not give you a time advantage in aniway during most single lap times but this is actualy the best and the fastest way to race very long distances, since its more kind to the car, your tires grip will last longer, This is what a myself specialize in since its great for street and dayly driving(my car is a front wheel drive as well), breaking early makes it very easy for people to overtake you wich is a plus for long distance racing and GREAT FOR NOT GETING DAMAGED during a race. You can practice this all the time, with any car, its safest skill out there, its not the fastest skill for a racer to have but i cant recomend this enougth ! breaking idealy as show in this videos have many benifts: perfect for time attack and ghost races, very good for defending giving away positions and lastly and most important keeping your avarage time very close to one another! But it also have some disadvantages: it wont go well in an unknow track, its takes tons of practice (gt will actualy lower the cost eficiency on this, but it will take alot of money and time to get proficient at this in every track, so get one track you like most and practice !practice is key for fiding "ideal breaking point").
this video is very applicable to gta online races. i was pretty good before, but this has improved it ten fold. also, your tire clipping video opened my eyes big time -- off road tires are ugly, but the extra money from wins is beautiful :)
Alot of controllers have pressure sensitive triggers now ie. Xbox Elite but again for the price of them you can buy a wheel lol. But very informative video series thanks.
Absolutely the best way to be a better racer. Thankyou for the help broughy. my question is that do you play gran turismo 6 now and again? I was wondering if we could have a few races online when my ps3 gets fixed.
This is my 1 problem when playing race games, I just cant get the corners right, I keep locking up and spinning. Hopefully I can use this video to improve my play. Main thing I've learned is that I'm braking far too late but choosing where is the right time to brake is what I'm struggling with
This must be where I always go wrong in GTA. I go up to a corner at a high speed and tap the handbrake just before I turn. Usually this makes me skid out of control and into a tree (or a person, or into the water. )
yep, the handbrake is a good deal for war. Hitting a player with a spoiler. Going left and right with handbrake so you won't get shot. Park your car on reverse so you can get out on a better side That kind of stuff
In GTA 5, how much are you tapping the brake? 80% 60% 40%? Should it be a fast tap or a slow gradual thing? It is really hard for me to tap the brake in such a way that it doesn't mess me up in some way, even with an xbox controller. The transition from nothing to full on is too quick. Thanks for this series BTW.
***** Most cars I just put the brake on 100%. Some cars prefer a little bit less but most will do fine at 100%. Just focus on doing your braking in a straight line on GTA and release the brake when you turn.
It's silly that I've been drying cars for literal decades but I can't/couldn't break when on a racing game. I guess it's because in real life I rarely go above legal speed anyway so it doesn't matter even if you fail, though I did notice it's kinda stupid to break when turning in real life. It's also a little psychological I think. When on a racing game you "must go the fastest" so it may feel stupid to break a lot before the turn but you know what, that's what intuitively I did in real life too, it just feels stupid to not break before a dangerous turn.
Hey broughy, i kinda think i need to ask you this but i have a task for school in which i have to give instructions and i was thinking to tell my class how they can be better at playing racing games/karting. now i wanted to use your videos and screenshots from your videos as examples. Now i dont know if i have to but i want to ask you if i may use those screenshots. anyway thanks and keep up making awesome content
If you're on a controller, use the right analog stick to accelerate and brake. Pull BACK to ACCELERATE and push FORWARD to BRAKE. It's more natural than the trigger buttons, you get finer control. The result is that you're pushing down to brake like in a real car.
Thanks for the videos, I've watched plenty of your GTA online racing videos...and I have a question about braking(in race simulations not in gta:o) Is it good in some corners to not brake at all but rather just release the throttle...corners like 'curva grande' on monza race track? cheers
It's always a fine line. Sometimes if you can get away with it a little lift off the throttle is better than braking, but it has to be small. In most cases it would be better to brake and then accelerate if you're going to have to be off the throttle for a prolonged period
Great video! I don't know much about racing, but was always told to tap the brakes multiple times prior to the turn instead of holding the brake. I assumed that tapping the brakes avoided brake fade (maybe I'm using the wrong term, but basically I assumed that holding the brake made the brakes work progressively worse for the respective turn you are braking) and made the brakes work better. Can you tell me the pros and cons of tapping the brakes vs holding the brakes? Great series, keep up the good work!
Tapping the brakes isn't a good idea at all under normal circumstances. Every time you come off the brake you're essentially not braking, meaning you have to brake much earlier. There is no brake fade from keeping your foot on the brake all the time They will work the same at the start and finish of you using the them. If you have to brake for 3 seconds before a turn to get to the right speed, tapping the brakes would mean you'd have to do that for 6 seconds (assuming you are on and off the brakes for the same amount of time, but you get the idea). It's just a lot more inefficient. Tapping the brakes (ie. pressing them, coming off, and repeating) is a technique to help you stop when you lock your wheels and don't have any kind of ABS help. But if you're doing that then you've already missed the corner. Definitely stop tapping the brakes and follow what I'm saying in the video and your lap times will improve. Thanks for your kind words btw :)
***** Thanks a bunch for the response! Much appreciated. I always love your racing videos, hopefully your channel will continue to grow. You seem to have a good head on your shoulders:)
Broughy, in the first video you suggested the Toyota GT 86 for a car to start with. You mentioned that it was the 15th anniversary edition. I only have the standard game and purchased the regular GT86 for 30,000. Is this basically the same car as the one you use except the livery?
Yeah they will be the same and I suggest that car to practice with. I only mentioned it was the 15th anniversary edition because if I didn't people would have said "why does your GT86 look so different to mine?!?!?!?!" haha :)
Completely new to racing games, this tutorial was wonderful Had a question though, it might be a dumb question but do you turn and brake after your initial straight line brake? Or do you just hold break until you get slow then just turn? I'm trying a street course that has like 75° turns i mean some crazy turns and i can't seem to get it. Either i brake and get passed or i try to keep my position and crash into the wall going to fast. Any help is appreciated
Brakes then turn in. You can brake and turn at the same time but that’s more advanced and required more nuance. Just keep braking later and later until you can’t make the corner, then you know where the braking point is
Some questions here. Do you use a wheel when playing GTA races? I don't know if it's possible at all but I guess you use a wheel in other racing games. Do you like Driveclub? I loved the graphics but a racing game not at 60 fps is a huge let down to me. Thanks.
You showed how you start breaking and breaking less. but I play racing games without using pedal/wheel. so how would one counteract this using only a keyboard? PS: not playing this game but PC2 and GTAO
You only option is using assists like traction control and ABS with keyboard. It really is the worst way to play racing games, even a cheap controller would give you much more control.
Broughy1322 well I got an xbox1 controller. I guess I'll get used to it. It just that if I'm playing GTA I'm playing with kb/m but I'll figure it out. Thanks for the reply
so how do you translate this to your gta racing when there are no technical signs or anything to let you know these things? gta 5 is definitely not a real racing game but there must be something you look out for not to go flying into the corners or spinning out when there is a loss of traction on bumps
hey, i race all the time in GTA, its really just about practicing the tracks, whenever there are new tracks out, i always race them solo on 10 laps each a few times, you will learn the intricacies of the track very well because your not focused on anyone else but yourself, or even focused on finishing first, its just about leraning the track. do this a few times and youll feel so comfortable with the track you can do it blindfold. well -- not really, but you get the idea. always race solo to learn the track.
Press the brake in the beginning harder, when you slow down, release it slowly. If you go fast you have more down-force, so you can brake harder, but if you go slower you lose your down-force.
I had this problem in forza motorsport because I use the line and it told me to brake in the corners so I turned it off and learned to brake while going straight people over too king me but I started accelerating while they were still braking
+Broughy1322 actually i would say that letting the gas go is better when your car is drifting or has a very strong oversteer caracteristic (mostly old rear wheel drives) or when theres a corner after a very steep up hill. Also you can let go of the gas before a very wide corner to prepare for a hard break into a very tigth corner afterwards as well! If your interested inthe history of car racing the "no breaking" styles were the best before breaking technology or abs existed ! that becouse breaks were not so trustworthy back in the day, this also happens when your breaks are way to hot or damaged in real life, rance you should practicing no breaking skills to come naturaly when you cant trust the breaks, which is mostly never if your car is in good condition!
In terms of gtao, is use of the e brake ever justified? Like Skidding/powersliding/drifiting On your grand prix hairpin for instance? Or is it always faster to use the regular brake and racing line?
Now I understand why I always was flying of the racing track, thanks.
Glad to help!
why was that
I found another forza player
"we'll _brake_ it down"
Him saying this made me have to subscribe lol

Very nice demonstration and instructions. Thanks!
i allways press the brakes mulitple times on corner
thanks for the tips should improve my drving skills

Why floor the brakes? Isn't it better to trail brake so you don't cause any friction to the tires?

When to brake in nurburgring first turn.

How hard do you brake and for how long?? Just a single tap or atleast 1 second??
It's different for every corner also changes depending on what car you are using.
You just have to practice and experiment
cool watching again 1 month later ormore
Any tips on braking without ABS? Coz I usually have trouble with the breaks locking
Press the brake in the beginning harder, when you slow down, release it slowly. If you go fast you have more down-force, so you can brake harder, but if you go slower you lose your down-force.

But..Shinji late brake and he is okay???
I'm confused.
Is it better to go a little bit over then under?
It's generally better to brake too early as you can account for that. Braking too late loses you a lot of time.
Cheers mate
When can letting off the gas instead of braking be beneficial?
Never, unless you can get around a corner with a slight (less than 1 second) lift. Otherwise you're losing time.
+Broughy1322 actually i would say that letting the gas go is better when your car is drifting or has a very strong oversteer caracteristic (mostly old rear wheel drives) or when theres a corner after a very steep up hill. When I'm racing (especially in GTA) I tend to fly off the map or spin way too much. I sabotage myself more than the oher players lol
In terms of gtao, is use of the e brake ever justified? Like Skidding/powersliding/drifiting On your grand prix hairpin for instance? Or is it always faster to use the regular brake and racing line?
Always faster to use the normal brake and racing line :)
It is wrong that you should not brake in a corner, all the best racing drivers sometimes tap brakes in a corner for weight change and better balance
That's beyond the scope of this video.
I subscribed because I'm awesome... Yeah... (Cough) Did anyone buy that lie?
I did what u taught me in your last video on gta and I smashed him around corners he didn't even make it to the end
Good job! :)
It was all thx to u mate
