Wellington cracks me up. "I'm about to order the invasion of France. To suspend it while we find Will Nugent would be interesting, but might be criticized in London."
The Duke of Wellington led a victorious British army across Portugal, Spain, and France, never losing a battle whatever the odds...but the sight of women and the thought of affection makes him completely flustered. I like the creativity.
The Governor General was Wellington's elder brother. Arthur Wellesly was a Colonel in India and is known for his famous victory against the Mahrathas at the Battle of Assaye.
Arthur Wellesly came to India in 1797. The Battle of Seringapatnam, in which Tipu Sultan died, took place in 1799. I have been to Seringapatnam and seen the small stone memorial indicating the exact location where Tipu Sultan died. Arthur Wellesly was the first British officer to physically see and confirm the Sultan's death.
When they are making bets you hear one man say "I'll bet 5 guineas on the gal" and then when Sharpe is going to shoot instead of Hagman you hear the same man say "better make it 10 guineas on the gal" Lol
there were a few who were raised from the ranks in the British army. It was a very small percentage, 10% I think, but those officers had the benefit of experience in the field. Most just purchased their commissions.
I love the way the LT says prove yourself to sharp before the rifle match, sharp should have been like prove myself? Saved lord wellingtons life, captured a French eagle, killed hundreds of enemies, what have you done again LT?
Yeah, yeah, we all met Lieutenant Ayres sometime in our lives, the virgin who never saw a woman before and doesn't know how to please her. (Maybe I'm looking at a mirror).
Arthur Wellessly had his elder brother's patronage and commanded forces attacking Tipu Sultan's capitol at Seringapatnam (That's close to Ooty). His initial forays were a bit of a disaster, but he finally captured the fortress of Tipu Sultan. Arthur found the body of Tipu Sultan inside the fort amongst a heap of bodies (he had died fighting) and asked for a stone memorial to be placed at the exact spot. It is still there. He then went on to defeat a French-trained Marhatta army at Assaye
Going through the every episode of Sharpe trying to find things to shame the British about so he can write for in the comments section, now complains he's insulted by something he's found. Well, I just gone into my field where I grow my f**ks and it seems to have been a bad harvest this year, so I fear I cannot give any to you to compensate!

you are right mate Lord Wellington was in india from 1805 till 1808 and he won a major battle near uttakmand or ooty as it is called in present time and there is a place near ooty named after him Wellington where a defense college is situated
Lord Arthur Welssely aka Duke of Wellington, was the first Governer General who in india expanded the company rule out side bengal which by mid 1830's was spread all over india. so thus we can say He was the Greatest General to serve the British Monarch as Lord Nelson Admiral of Royal Navy
yeah, she is sent to live with theresa's family in spain as sharpe didn't want to raise her within the army but rather that she could have a good peaceful life
@thejoexman Actually this isn't so unrealistic, when you consider the standards of the time. He's spent much of his adult life around men (rough ones at that), and at war. As a member of the Peerage he'd only be able to marry a woman of similarly high standing, which are hard to come by when you're slugging it out with Napoleon around the world and in penninsula.
@SixFootBabyStudios I don't understand what you mean by "it sounds like suicide" but being hanged is not a good way to go, especially if it's not done "scientifically" by means of proper rope to drop ratio including body weight to ensure a broken neck.
4:20 Wow! Just like America! Have the Spanish speaking people take care of everything. If there's an apocalypse, the people with practical skills will have a better chance of survival. More power to them.
Near true, he only suffered one defeat but that was a night attack gone wrong back during his time in India during the siege of Seringapatam but it is indeed right that after that he never again suffered a defeat. This is also the reason why Wellesley would never again attempt a nightattack unless it was vital.
Its always been okay for men to wear a hat inside when there isn't a hat check in, a hat rack, or a empty chair. Hats are considered accessories and are never to be placed on a dining table or the floor/ground. Furthermore, without hat accommodations men have the right to wear their hats inside in protest. Men don't have to hold their hats with one of their hands inside forever...
@thejoexman I know this was a long time ago, but I can't sit back and see such a disgrace to Napoleon. It must be unknown to you, but Wellington lost at the Battle of Quatre Bras, that is just one battle I know of that he lost. The battle was part of the Waterloo Campaign so I'd like it much more if you could say that he won the campaigns and not all the battles because it is more accurate. Also to be fair he didn't face Napoleon in the battle, it was Micheal Ney.
literate France from a wicked old regime? Napoleon's regime is one of the most stable and popular of that time. Old Wellington is missing the fact that the French people support this new regime and Napoleon.

Wellingtons capable eyes "laugh anymore and one will have you shot"
@@raxsavvage I don't think Wellington said that as he could speak English and, unlike you, knew how to use the impersonal pronoun.
as soon as Wellington's cousin's daughter shows up, Sharpe's like "oohh yeah, time to get my mack on"....
Cousin...Otherwise Wellington would have all the provosts providing an armed escort at all times! XD
That flute motif as Ellie and her mom ride up ALWAYS puts me in mind of, "Irish Spring. Manly, but I like it too."

@DiVeronica i just meant that "strangled to death by his own body weight" sounds like he's killing himself
@tommybarrs no no, she's supposed to be from kildare
How did we ever win that war with officers like that
The left tenant is Robert Shaw s son
Holy crap your right!
Been staring at his mush for ages thinking I know that fella!
this is a very gothic episode. apart from that i think that wellington would have rather faced the french than this neice in front of his men.

I don't think they quite got Hugh Fraser's nose makeup right.
with Admilral Nelson Duke of Wellington is the only defense general who never lost a single war no matter how adverse the situation was
