As an Indian, we have known Hariharan all our lives. Today he is 68 years old. He has started singing since the 70s. He has belted hits after hits. He is one of those few trained singers who has mastered his art. Inspite of being south Indian, the wonderful part is his love for north indian classical style of singing, which you dont see usually. He has released many albums of Ghazals. Ghazals are songs on north indian classical style based on poems or love odes, they have a separate fan base of their own. His perhaps most famous song is Roja. When Roja came out in 1992, it revolutionized the Indian film music industry. It was also listed in Time magazine's "10 Best Soundtracks" of all time. He has many many famous songs in Tamil and Hindi. But do listen to Roja in its original form and musical arrangement. My one wish is to listen to his live concert. If you ask my top fav singers, he is undoubtedly one of them. Oh by the way , in the 90s he had a boy band of his own. It was named Colonial Cousins. Oh the songs were so hit. Such childhood memories !
The reason why it has only 13 million views is because he himself has sung this song in 13 million ways with same music on different platforms most probably every one of us has his or her own fav out of those. And I am telling you, you should go and listen to other live versions of this song by him, and then tell us which one is your fav
He is a Maestro.. Classical, Pop, Cinema, Ghazals.. you name it.. My Idol .. One day I will meet personally to be blessed by him.. I pray to God Almighty..
Hey Justin Burke, He lost his father when he was 8. His mother encouraged him to take music as his life path and she promised she will be there supporting him and wanted him to keep going on and on breathing and living music. She ensured he need not focus on anything else for survival despite the huge personal loss.
Hariharan is a legendary singer in India, who is often in the conversation when talking about the greatest singers in india. This song is actually a film song composed by ar rahman and sung by hariharan, but the original is quite different. Hariharan never sings this song the same way, every time he sings this song, the audience is in for a treat because he would have sung it a little differently. He usually improvises on stage, and people watch him for the magic he weaves with those improvisations. He was in his early 60s when he sung this particular performace, and he has been singing since 1977 professionally. I cant remember exactly, but i think he used to practice singing 8 hours a day.
Hariharan is a classically trained singer. He’s from a musical family n his first teacher was his mother. He has been singing since the late 1970s, mostly film songs and ghazals. He shot to fame in 1996, when he and a fellow musician released an album known as Colonial Cousins. It’s a seamless blend of Indian and Western music. The album won several awards internationally. Around the same time he started singing for AR Rahman, which gave him greater visibility in both north and south India. Hariharan has won two national awards as a playback singer and is the recipient of a Padma Shri honour from the Indian government.
The legend you are listening to is Hariharan ji. He is one of the finest singers of India. The practice he did in his life, is very deep in classical music. If we are listening to him, it's a great pleasure for all of us to learn from him.. One of the best singers of India.
amazing, thanks for your comments Justin. Hariharan sir is one of the best in the industry. He is extremely well training expert in classical carnatic music, gazals, sufi and of course he is one fo the best playback singers of indian film music
This song is basically from a film shot in two languages-Hindi & Tamil. Hariharan's mother tongue is Tamil but having lived in Bombay for most of his lifetime, Hariharan is fluent with Hindi also. So, his diction is blemishless in both languages. At the end of 6th minute of this recording, you can observe, he sings 'Uyire, uyire (Tamil) instead of Tu hi re, Tu hi re, which was the opening rendition. For a comparison of this recording, you should hear the original recording of both the Hindi and Tamil versions, as recorded in the films -titled Bombay in both languages. You will understand the distortions between the movie recording and MTV recording. (Of course, both are good but, the movie version appeals to me more).
Hey Justin, he is one of the best star of aIndia and we are proud of this legend. Hari Haranjis list of songs are endless and we Cant decide which is the top class, as all his songs are out of the world. I had the privilege to hear him live. Luv you always Hari Haran Sir🥰
Dude, you can't even think how much pain of attachment this song carries. I cried many times listening this, literally if you understand the lyrics and with the music, the lyrics tears you apart. The vocals strike like a pin in your heart. Love hariharan sir for this song and also others.
there is a live vieo of hariharan singing 'Hai Rama' with Sujatha Mohan, in an old ar rahman concert, it is a raw recording of a live concert without much mixing. worth watching
The song is part of a 1995 movie 'Bombay ' made in 2 languages. The director is a maverick Mani Rathnam and Hariharan comes from a family of reknown classical singers. Three bits of info on Hariharan 1. He is known never to render a song in the same manner while performing live (like Sukhwinder Singh) 2. He has knowledge of western music and has jammed with jazz and fusion bands like Shakti whose member is Ustad Zakir Hussain, a current Grammy award winner. 3. Hariharan has sung in multiple languages and recorded over 15,000 songs in 10 languages ENJOOOOOY
There is no ending of the Indian classical music world ,in every bite you will get different tests.. and the best thing is you will love each of them 🥰
Hariharan sir is my musical God! As a 90’s kid we all grew up listening to his songs! Now my ringtone, alarm tone, my car playlist are all songs from his Voice! On 3/1/24 I had the privelage to meet him and take a picture with him which I have set it as my wallpaper! That moment i can never express it through words! A magical moment in my Life because meeting him was always a dream for me since 14 years old and I got the chance after 17 years!! So guys just believe that you will always get what you always wanted if you are really dedicated. Your dream will take you to it! Just believe
I wanted to let you know that this is not how the original song has been sung. Hariharan improvises every time he sings the song, so every version of the song sung by him is different. He is just so impressive. I don't know if you have noticed, he has sung this particular version in 2 languages; Hindi and Tamil if i am not mistaken.
Dude, such Lyrics, Music and the Singer come once in a lifetime. You are lucky to listen to this. This is heartbeat and a missed one for many many Indians 😂
He is a legend...just indescribable...did anyone tell u he switched languages mid song at 6:20 ...from Hindi ( very common) to Tamil (his native language) ... It's just the universality of music.... actually the original composition is in Tamil...
He is Hariharan the music legend who had enthralled millions and millions with his awesome, soulful voice and music of various genres! His melodies have been the therapy for me and millions like me! All my life and I'm 61!
Justin, He is one of the most trained and experience artist. Since I started to understand music a little bit he was always my favorite artist and offcourse will stay
Technically this song has 100s of millions of views coz everyone Literally everyone knows this song and it's intricacies...just that this particular video doesn't have those many views on TH-cam...this song comes from era of cassettes not even CDs...it's was a hit album in 1995
Well versed in both Carnatic and Hindusthani as well. He is the one who transformed Play back singing to another level. His improvisations are never ending each time he sings any of his songs. ❤❤❤
He can sing this song in thousands of new versions. And every new version will be unique in itself. I have heard him live and I must say his vocals are so trained that they can play with notes just like water flowing in the river.
This is one of those my favourite songs which I keep listening to it repeatedly. The agony of an intense love has been brought out beautifully by the musician A R Rehman and singer Hariharan
Hariharan Anantha Subramani (born 3 April 1955) is an Indian playback, bhajan and ghazal singer who predominantly sings in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu languages. He has also sung over 15,000 notable songs in 10 languages including Malayalam, Kannada, Marathi, Sinhala, Bhojpuri, Odia, Bengali, Sanskrit, Gujarati and English. He is an established ghazal singer and one of the pioneers of Indian fusion music.
dude he is a legend. i believe he have more experience than the age of you. the reason why most of us listen to songs he could be one of the reason. on another video I saw you mentioned that why people arent cheering and standing. trust me half if the people sitting there eually good as this guy and its in the indian culture.
Those who listens to him constantly knows his ability and that's more than enough now. As all the other famous singers we may praise him more in future
Hariharan is yet another legendary singer who has Carnatic classical as his foundation. Sonu Nigam whom you also like a lot has Hindustani Classical as his foundation. The original song was written in Tamil which appears to be the oldest language in the world. Later dubbed in Hindi.
@6:08 these are the real legends who have sold millions of records and cassettes, not a 30 sec fame celebrity on social media which people forget within a month. real music lovers will always cherish them
one of best vocalist ever existed.. Hariharan sir is extra ordinary. another singer you can do review is Papon. He's got the soul, list to papon- raj Jane ki zid na karo (its a ghazal) listen at night with a good headphone
Hariharan is one of those rare singers who’s trained in both Carnatic and Hindustani music. He also sings Ghazals and songs that have strong Islamic influence. While extremely talented, Hariharan didn’t become popular until AR Rahman introduced him as a playback singer in the movie Roja. Hariharan is an all time favorite for many in India. The great Mohammad Rafi, my favorite SPB, Kishore Kumar, Hariharan, Lata Mangeshkar, S Janaki, Chitra, Yesudas are some of the most accomplished movie singers of all time. There are so many talented singers.
Hariharan 🙏 you should listen to Chitra mam's high pitch singing too. The Hindi and Tamil version were sung by her originally, but they later replaced her voice in Hindi version as the music company wanted someone from North. Unmatched singing!!
Hariharan ji is a musical Maestro ... legendary Indian singer known for his mastery in Indian classical...🙏✨ Justin, please react to Shreya Ghoshal and Sonu Nigam's Duet Live performance in Indian Idol season 14 Grand Finale
Hariharan sir kills us by his vibrato. He changes the actual tune of the song and makes the song more and more beautiful. He is a living legend. We are blessed to live in his era. The reason behind dese beautiful compositions is just one and only AR RAHMAN. He is brilliant. A note to Justin, kindly post reaction videos for SPB AND SHANKAR MAHADEVAN also. You would also love them equally as Hariharan sir.
You need to watch him sing a ghazal (where he shows alot of his true artistry). Search for youtube video with title "Sheher Dar Sheher | Hariharan | LIVE | Hindustani Classical | Idea Jalsa | Art and Artistes". He's one of the greatest singers in India.
305. Justin, I read about 10 comments below mine. And by now you would have understood his background. He is a trained classical singer who became popular with Colonial Cousins. He also does Carnatic Music Vocal Katcheri. You may call it Stage Performance. I am his fan. His voice emotes a lot. I feel the emotions since his diction is perfect and his pitch and tone are as required by the emotion and the lyrics. I pray for his health and long journey with us. You enjoy. I saw 10 to 15 videos of yours. I request you to come to India for a one month and do whatever from here. You will understand Indian Music better. 100 m bhangra viewership is a distorted view of the Indian Music.

Its a love song... no singer could have done justice to this song other than Hariharan... He's the best ever... He has sung it in two Indian languages one is Hindi and the other is Tamil.
His mother is a legendary Carnatic singer. She was his first teacher. In college he sang Beatles and other rock bands. Then he learned from Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan. Thereafter he sang for Bollywood and composed his own Ghazal albums. He is a legend today. A R. Rahman considers him to be one of the finest singers ever.
He's a living legend. I've been asking many reactions for his many songs. He's one more suggestion "Vaaji-vaaji" song. Do it's reaction if possible Justin
Less views bcoz this is a old movie song from movie "Bombay" released in 1995 and song is so famous that indians have by hearted this song. This duet song originally sung by Hariharan himself with female singer Chitra in this film. As Hariharan was at peak in his carrier as a movie playback singer in 1990's,has given great contribution to Tamil,Telagu,Malayalam and Hindi (Bollywood) film industries. This song is so famous and familiar that even today every indian knows and can sing few lyrics of this song. So people care to watch again.
This song was sung in Tamil and Hindi. Both versions were highly popular and considered cults classics and evergreen today. As such both these songs have over 80mn views and Indians are huge fans! This song is from the 90s, pre-YT era. He's considered a legend and his music is timeless and give me goosebumps still...
There’s actually a science behind when should one be holding a straight tone vs when to oscillate the tone in indian classical music. It’s like being on a race track & trying to overtake the guy ahead of you only at certain points 😊
This is the result of decades of riyaz i.e practising vocal exercises.....the basics of indian vocal classical singing be it hindustani or carnatic. Hariharan is a very well known singer noted for his classical songs, ghazals and Bollywood songs.
His of the song named (Hanuman chalisa ) by hariharan is one of the most viewed song of india 3.4Billions views on that song this song is about the lord hanuman 🙏
Hahahaha.... He doesn't need million views.... He is among the top talents of India. If tomorrow anything happens to those having million views no one will give a shit. But if this guy goes ( I pray for his god health and long life), whole nation will mourn.
You should listen to this song along with its translation. The lyrics where the singer transitions to a softer tone are just as beautiful as his singing. If you understand the meaning behind the melancholic lyrics, you will appreciate the song and the singer even more. It's definitely a song that will bring tears to your eyes.
Justin, Hariharan is legend he is got extraordinary songs to his credit , It's on par with any great artist in the world, He sings Gazals, English Pop, Indian Movie Songs in various Indian languages. He is very senior pro, He has English songs to his credit, Listen to English songs Coloniel cousins
He is also singing this in multiple languages live and pronouncing every word perfectly. This song is composed in multiple ragas (A raga is a collection of pitches - bit like scale or mode). Different ragas help the composer set the mood of songs. Which is why songs are an integral part of story telling in Indian movies. Starts off in Harikamboji and a towards the end it goes into a different raga which I’m not sure of. The way this song is composed gives the singer a lot of freedom to improvise and add these interesting vocal ornaments to the composition. You should listen to Mrs K S Chitra singing Kannalanae live (yet another A R Rahman composition). Don’t need to react if you haven’t got the time but it will be interesting for a musician to listen to it
Listening to your videos and your comments, very satisfying.awesome. I don't know about music. But I enjoy music. Your videos make me very satisfying.keep going..
This is not official video and it has 13M views original video has more than 100M Fun fact he sang in 2 languages in this video started with Hindi gradually moved towards Tamil and then ended in Hindi again. He is legend 😍

You must watch JHOKA HAWA KA by hariharan.

This song is from Bombay film.. Just listen to all the songs of Bombay and Roja.. You will be amazed for sure!
his all repeat performs are different and creative (some what like unplugged)
There’s actually a science behind when should one be holding a straight tone vs when to oscillate the tone in indian classical music. It’s like being on a race track & trying to overtake the guy ahead of you only at certain points 😊
React to his live performance of the song 'Nila Kagirathu', composed by A. R. Rahman
He Is Hariharan One Of The Great Singers of Indian Region
HE Practice 13Hrs/Day Since Childhood
the song is about a guy waiting for his lover and there is the yearning in his voice... just the voice tells the story...

Fun fact- He not only switched nodes in the song, but also switched languages in between ❤
This is the result of decades of riyaz i.e practising vocal exercises.....the basics of indian vocal classical singing be it hindustani or carnatic. Hariharan is a very well known singer noted for his classical songs, ghazals and Bollywood songs.
His of the song named (Hanuman chalisa ) by hariharan is one of the most viewed song of india 3.4Billions views on that song this song is about the lord hanuman 🙏

He is just legendary . This song is a love song where newly wed couple are separated in a tragic incident. He is singing for her
Rest assured India knows he is one of greats. The song was released decades ago and other uploads have multi millions views as you’d expect.
Don’t need to react if you haven’t got the time but it will be interesting for a musician to listen to it
Hariharan sweet voice
