Kate Bush writes her own music, produces her music, plays the piano, has a magnificent voice, and stays out of the spotlight as much as possible. The term genius gets tossed around a bunch, but I think it applies to her.
Not only that she produced music videos with her doing the most amazing dancing and choreography while she sang and this started in the late seventies of all things!

My favorite Kate Bush songs are 'Moments of Pleasure' (my fav) - 'This woman's work' - 'I dream of sheep' - 'The sensual world' and many, many more. You should take a deep dive into her work. She is unique.

It tells the story of a woman drifting alone at sea after her ship has gone down, with dreams, nightmares and the longing to return to her family.
Kate is gorgeous in every sense. Beautiful, timeless music and in her day a physically beautiful woman. Does her own choreography in videos and also one of the first women to handle her own business side. BTW David Gilmour gave her a big assist in getting her music career started and they are great friends to this day.
Saying she sings like a bird is visionary as many years later she issued "Aerial" which tackles bird singing as a conceptual piece. You could not be more on point !
I remember the exact moment I heard this track the first time, 37+ years ago, on MTV at my parents house. It stopped cold in my tracks and had to listen. Many a track has caught my attention on first listen, but none have left the mark this did.
I honestly love that you don’t watch videos and just bring us reactions to music. However, with Kate Bush, you have to watch the video. She was such a visual artist, and her choreography and use of imagery was so far ahead of its time.
I get you, but I cordially disagree. The music stands on its own merits, and watching the video will *inevitably* distract from the music. One of my pet peeves with reaction videos (and I watch a lot!) is when the reactor ends up talking mostly about the video and hardly at all about the music...

The sexual politics at play in this song are amazing. She's vocalizing something a lot of women can recognize. "Tell me we both matter, don't we?" is a devastating line. A few tidbits: - Kate owns her masters on her own record label, so when Stranger things blew up her record, Kate actually made a bunch of money (unlike a lot of other artists when things like this happen) so that's nice to know - As you continue on your Pink Floyd journey keep in mind David Gilmour actually helped Kate get signed. He heard a rough demo that had been passed on by a bunch of labels when Kate was 16. He paid for and helped her record new professional demos and got the head of EMI to listen to get her a deal since he believed in her as an artist. Also there's a version of the two of them playing this song live on TH-cam. Its amazing, check it out.

Funny that she was an amazing figure in the alternative music world back in the day and then Stranger Things catapulted Running Up That Hill into the top 40, what a strange phenomenon. Syed, as cool as this is, in my freshman year of college, her really outlier album The Dreaming came out, I think it was around 1982. And it got a lot of play on our local college alternative radio station and I heard this song from it called Something Sat In Your Lap. You mentioned liking the drums on this song; Something Set In Your Lap is the craziest drum-heavy thing and the lyrics are a bit more abstract but I would love to hear your take on it. I don't think I ever tried to analyze them at the time; I just love her voice and the look on her face and the song itself is so compelling and everything on that album was fairly experimental, but it still leveraged her classical vocal training and penchant for amazing costumes and narratives, and I just found all of that album so compelling compared to the other ones, although I bought all of her albums definitely. At one point, I went to this really strange art gathering in this abandoned building in town and somebody had their hands on a whole bunch of Kate Bush music videos from Britain and we all drank wine and sat cross-legged on the floor and they set up an old projector and screen and played them with sound of course, and we were blown away by how amazing these things were, this was the late seventies into the early 80s and she was way way way ahead of her time. Doing the most amazing dancing in the most amazing costumes while basically singing at an operatic level and all of it just so brilliantly conceptual. She really is a phenomenon unto herself and it is so impressive.
This song still makes my spine tingle the way it did when I first heard it. I owe a lot to Kate Bush. She was part of my exploration in music and I thank her genius for that. The Hounds of Love album is a masterpiece, you could say the first half is hit after hit and the second half seems more personal and experimental. Syed, great reaction/analysis. Yes, you may say it was ahead of its time, but this was very relevant in the 80s. It meant so much to me, as I was trapped in an epic relationship struggle. To top it off, I lived down in the town, and she lived high on the hill. In real time, this song struck me to the core. True genius in concept and execution, best of the 80s.
THE amazing singer, songwriter, composer and producer, Kate Bush. One of the most unique artists of all time. She knew what she wanted to say, they gave her money and 1 or 2 years at EMI when she was 16, seeing her talent, so she could get better amd come back. She came back at 17-18, recorded "The Kick inside", amazing debut album. And she danced too...pure art.
So, the comments around dreamlike qualities permeates every song she creates on some level. The use of birds chirping and other natural bridges of thought are her hallmarks. In videos, because she is also brilliant in dance, the visuals are even more impactive. "The Sensual World" maybe the best example, but the entire CD "Aeriel" is magical in its textured sounds, transitions and dream sanctuary. Glad you enjoyed

No. She has talked about this song many times. She did not come at it from the current "Men are the baddies!" aspect. She approached it as both sexes need to understand each other better.
Ah man, this is a fantastic song. I liked it but I liked the Placebo cover almost more than the OG. But since Stranger Things used it in their show, it's gone to one of my favourites and I find myself humming it every now and then. And while "RUTH" is really very, very good, and has brought Kate a global recognition that is very well deserved, even if something that she seems to have never really craved or felt in need of, t my mind the truth about "RUTH" is that in this song we are really only paddling on the safe seashore of her music. Delving into her extraordinary music catalogue will bring you face to face with weirdness, madness, paranoia, inc*st, suicide, murder, revenge, nuclear fallout, ghosts, monsters, demons, witches, possessions, hauntings, ethnic cleansing, sex from many angles, childbirth - but from the anxious waiting father's perspective, songs dealing with reincarnation, encounters with the dead, religious and philosophical schools of thought, a composer dying with syphilis, a song inspired by Stephen King's "The Shining"... and a near 15 minute song in which she tells of shaking the sheets, grinding the corn, or doing the deed, or having the matrimonial polka, or horizontal tango... with a snowman. She treats us to a song where she puts on a fake Australian accent, or another where she dons a fake cockney accent or yet another where she gives us a fake Irish accent. She gives us a song completely unaccompanied... just her and only her voice, she gives us a cover version on which the original artist contributes as a backing singer and then claims that her version is better than his original. She gives us a vocal performance that would eventually lead to Elton John saying that it literally saved his life. She also gives us a song about the mathematical number PI in which she proceeds to recite.... the mathematical number PI, and another song about the old story of how Eskimo/Inuit have 50 words for snow in which she proceeds to recite her own 50 words for snow each of which is more ridiculous than the previous. In her videos she gives us the most erotically charged removal of a hat in the history of rock music, another in which she does very bad things to a double bass, another where she spends much of her time dancing deliberately on her partners feet, another that consists entirely of her spinning non-stop into the darkness, and another where she assumes the guise of some kind of futuristic alien baby in the womb. The utterly unique Kate Bush!

Got it in one! -- Now you've got the taste of honey on your lips, you should go for more dives into Kate Bush. -- You could try really early "Cloudbusting" with Donald Sutherland in the video. -- Or the fantastically constructed "Army Dreamers". -- But there's dozens of other to choose from too.
Running Up That Hill is just the tip of the Kate Bush iceberg. This song is actually rather straightforward compared to what most of her songs are about conceptually. Incredible song regardless. Do give her album Hounds of Love a listen. Much to dissect and analyze there.

So - if not to post, treat yourself to listening to the whole album Hounds of Love front to back. Fantastic composition, road but focused sonic template; fantastic vocals and percussion throughout .and the whole second half is one long conceptual piece broken into parts - it’s like a Pink Floyd album only it’s Kate Bush is all her particular brilliance. Which is no surprise: she was “discovered” by Dave Gilmour and he’s played guitar on a few of her tracks. She’s the full package: she had absolute creative control since signing as a teenager over her own music compositions and performances, video production, etc. Absolutely fucking brilliant.

The first half of this album is great pop songs. The second half is called the Ninth Wave a 7 song suite about a woman lost at sea. It’s one of the greatest pieces of music ever released into the pop world. No one like her. Her music only improves with age.
I've always thought that what she was referring to was a woman's experience of sex, that seemingly pained reaction being the hurt she's reassuring him she's not feeling, or complaining of at least, how conversely men achieve their plateau so relatively easily while women require patience, generosity and dedication from their partners. I'm more familiar with her previous album, 'The Dreaming', very deserving of your perusal. Try 'Pull Out the Pin', 'Suspended In Gaffa', and the title track at minimum. Cheers, good reaction 👍
If you want another amazing concept try Genesis again, but do 'Mama' with the official video so there will definitely be no misunderstanding the situation. The lyrics are pretty clear and the song is not about your mama (think 'sex worker'). I can't believe of all their massive body of great work you picked 'I Can't Dance'. And if you do try Collins solo pick his live video of 'In The Air Tonight' 2004 Paris. You WILL LOVE the production (even if you know the song). Awesome.
In certain music circles (including mine) she's a legend. But Running Up That Hill, despite its commercial success, is not even in my top ten favorite songs by her.

I'm not sure your really getting this song. It's pretty much "You think you have it hard, let's trade places and see" The whole "Hounds of Love" album is one of the best and needs a listen as much as any Pink Floyd album does. "Cloudbursting" the last track on side one is a favorite. Acually on vinyl side one was "The Hounds of Love" an side 2 was called "The Ninth Wave" where it's 7 tracks conceptualy went together where Bush pursues a vision quest, taking the listener through a death and rebirth.
Kate Bush is a unique and singular talent. When you listen to any of her music it is purely her artistic vision. The constant David Glmour references are a little annoying like there is a need to place a man into her music and story. Kate's brother was a friend of Gilmour's and passed him a demo. He did help get her noticed and signed very early, but there was no way her talent wasn't going to be recognised. Glimour wrote nothing for her, played on nothing and produced nothing. He's a footnote in Kate's story, nothing more.
Richard Draper How many of Kate's albums do you own? Whilst she deserves all the credit as the sole songwriter, Dave is credited with producing "Man With The Child In His Eyes" and "Saxophone Song". Played on nothing? How about backing vocals on "Pull Out The Pin", plus lead guitar on "Rocket's Tail" and "Love And Anger". None of this detracts from Kate's brilliance, but do a bit more research before making false statements. BTW it was family friend, Ricky Hopper who told Dave about Kate.

Just checked my original pressing of The Kick Inside and The Saxophone Song and Man With The Child In His Eyes have Dave Gilmour credited as Executive Producer. This is typically given as a favour for financial assistance or arranging the session etc and does not imply any artistic input. Fair play, I forgot that he has had a few guest slots once she was already an established artist. That puts him on a level with Rolf Harris and I don't see the comments on every Kate Bush video banging on about him. Some people just seem to feel more comfortable when a woman's talent can be credited to a man in some way. I'm not one of those people.

This song still makes my spine tingle the way it did when I first heard it. I owe a lot to Kate Bush. She was part of my exploration in music and I thank her genius for that. The Hounds of Love album is a masterpiece, you could say the first half is hit after hit and the second half seems more personal and experimental.

Syed, great reaction/analysis. Yes, you may say it was ahead of its time, but this was very relevant in the 80s. It meant so much to me, as I was trapped in an epic relationship struggle. To top it off, I lived down in the town, and she lived high on the hill. In real time, this song struck me to the core. True genius in concept and execution, best of the 80s.
THE amazing singer, songwriter, composer and producer, Kate Bush. One of the most unique artists of all time. She knew what she wanted to say, they gave her money and 1 or 2 years at EMI when she was 16, seeing her talent, so she could get better amd come back. She came back at 17-18, recorded "The Kick inside", amazing debut album. And she danced too...pure art.
So, the comments around dreamlike qualities permeates every song she creates on some level. The use of birds chirping and other natural bridges of thought are her hallmarks. In videos, because she is also brilliant in dance, the visuals are even more impactive. "The Sensual World" maybe the best example, but the entire CD "Aeriel" is magical in its textured sounds, transitions and dream sanctuary. Glad you enjoyed

No. She has talked about this song many times. She did not come at it from the current "Men are the baddies!" aspect. She approached it as both sexes need to understand each other better.
Ah man, this is a fantastic song. I liked it but I liked the Placebo cover almost more than the OG. But since Stranger Things used it in their show, it's gone to one of my favourites and I find myself humming it every now and then. And not only that, she gets 100% of the royalties for it due to her creating and writing it herself, or so I've heard. Correct me if I'm wrong.

And while "RUTH" is really very, very good, and has brought Kate a global recognition that is very well deserved, even if something that she seems to have never really craved or felt in need of, t my mind the truth about "RUTH" is that in this song we are really only paddling on the safe seashore of her music.

In her videos she gives us the most erotically charged removal of a hat in the history of rock music, another in which she does very bad things to a double bass, another where she spends much of her time dancing deliberately on her partners feet, another that consists entirely of her spinning non-stop into the darkness, and another where she assumes the guise of some kind of futuristic alien baby in the womb.

The instrument playing throughout the song is an early 1970s synthesiser called a Fairlight. At the time her's was one of only few in the country.
Colin Piper Not to be confused with the older, more commonly used, moog synthesiser, though. It was named after a Sydney Harbour ferry, which itself was named after the northern Sydney harbourside suburb of Fairlight. We used to stop into Fairlight on the way to Manly Beach.

Got it in one! -- Now you've got the taste of honey on your lips, you should go for more dives into Kate Bush. -- You could try really early "Cloudbusting" with Donald Sutherland in the video. -- Or the fantastically constructed "Army Dreamers". -- But there's dozens of other to choose from too.

Running Up That Hill is just the tip of the Kate Bush iceberg. This song is actually rather straightforward compared to what most of her songs are about conceptually. Incredible song regardless. Do give her album Hounds of Love a listen. Much to dissect and analyze there.

So - if not to post, treat yourself to listening to the whole album Hounds of Love front to back. Fantastic composition, road but focused sonic template; fantastic vocals and percussion throughout .and the whole second half is one long conceptual piece broken into parts - it’s like a Pink Floyd album only it’s Kate Bush is all her particular brilliance.
Which is no surprise: she was “discovered” by Dave Gilmour and he’s played guitar on a few of her tracks.
She’s the full package: she had absolute creative control since signing as a teenager over her own music compositions and performances, video production, etc. Absolutely fucking brilliant.

She has quite a few top songs but for me this and her duet with Peter Gabriel on 'Don't Give Up' are her best two.

The first half of this album is great pop songs. The second half is called the Ninth Wave a 7 song suite about a woman lost at sea. It’s one of the greatest pieces of music ever released into the pop world. No one like her. Her music only improves with age.
You have to do Babushka next, that will really blow your mind for creative storytelling. Would love to hear your take on that.

Kate Bush is fantastic because she controls all her music, writing, producing etc, rarely tours.
I've always thought that what she was referring to was a woman's experience of sex, that seemingly pained reaction being the hurt she's reassuring him she's not feeling, or complaining of at least, how conversely men achieve their plateau so relatively easily while women require patience, generosity and dedication from their partners.
I'm more familiar with her previous album, 'The Dreaming', very deserving of your perusal. Try 'Pull Out the Pin', 'Suspended In Gaffa', and the title track at minimum. Cheers, good reaction 👍

If you want another amazing concept try Genesis again, but do 'Mama' with the official video so there will definitely be no misunderstanding the situation. The lyrics are pretty clear and the song is not about your mama (think 'sex worker'). I can't believe of all their massive body of great work you picked 'I Can't Dance'. And if you do try Collins solo pick his live video of 'In The Air Tonight' 2004 Paris. You WILL LOVE the production (even if you know the song). Awesome.
In certain music circles (including mine) she's a legend. But Running Up That Hill, despite its commercial success, is not even in my top ten favorite songs by her.

I'm not sure your really getting this song. It's pretty much "You think you have it hard, let's trade places and see" The whole "Hounds of Love" album is one of the best and needs a listen as much as any Pink Floyd album does. "Cloudbursting" the last track on side one is a favorite. Acually on vinyl side one was "The Hounds of Love" an side 2 was called "The Ninth Wave" where it's 7 tracks conceptualy went together where Bush pursues a vision quest, taking the listener through a death and rebirth.

Kate Bush is a unique and singular talent. When you listen to any of her music it is purely her artistic vision. The constant David Glmour references are a little annoying like there is a need to place a man into her music and story. Kate's brother was a friend of Gilmour's and passed him a demo. He did help get her noticed and signed very early, but there was no way her talent wasn't going to be recognised. Glimour wrote nothing for her, played on nothing and produced nothing. He's a footnote in Kate's story, nothing more.
Richard Draper How many of Kate's albums do you own? Whilst she deserves all the credit as the sole songwriter, Dave is credited with producing "Man With The Child In His Eyes" and "Saxophone Song". Played on nothing? How about backing vocals on "Pull Out The Pin", plus lead guitar on "Rocket's Tail" and "Love And Anger". None of this detracts from Kate's brilliance, but do a bit more research before making false statements. BTW it was family friend, Ricky Hopper who told Dave about Kate.

Just checked my original pressing of The Kick Inside and The Saxophone Song and Man With The Child In His Eyes have Dave Gilmour credited as Executive Producer. This is typically given as a favour for financial assistance or arranging the session etc and does not imply any artistic input.
Fair play, I forgot that he has had a few guest slots once she was already an established artist. That puts him on a level with Rolf Harris and I don't see the comments on every Kate Bush video banging on about him. Some people just seem to feel more comfortable when a woman's talent can be credited to a man in some way. I'm not one of those people.

I'm quite happy to concede Kate's work stands on it's own merits, but I personally like to cite David to anyone who may be a non believer. Not suggesting that you are one of those. You're obviously not. I've got her whole catalogue on vinyl as well. Plus contributions to Roy Harper, Big Country, Peter Gabriel, Go West, Midge Ure, Prince. Most of whom I wouldn't listen to except for Kate.
