I watch a channel where the farmer raises only Dexter cows for beef. They are smaller and easier to handle than regular size beef cows. Might be the way to go for you guys, and you could get two cows.
Rachel, I have to say I'm loving your hair these days! I've been a long-time watcher, and remember watching you go through your hair challenges 🙂So glad you've remained natural...it suits you!
First full on homegrown meal, I did that for my 60th birthday from the wine, the soups, the meals, bread, the entrees, the deserts, everything was homemade and most of it was homegrown as well, it was a very proud moment for me.
I saw a video from the Hollar homestead where they grafted a fruit tree to a Bradford pear trunk and it grew. Maybe a way to get new fruit trees for you. I'm sure if you emailed them they could explain their process.
I love your channel! Rachel gave me the confidence to try pressure canning! I had the canner for 6 months and watched so many tutorials, but when I found this channel I was ready! Thank you so much!!
Oh my goodness Rachel. I was laughing when you were talking about finding crabapples from the neighbors. I actually walked into my local supermarket and asked the manager if I could pick the crabapples off the trees in the parking lot. I promised him some crabapple jam. Lol😊
It's amazing how man y projects can keep getting added to the list. Our home we keep getting things done too but something else always gets added. :) Even though you aren't gardening , it looks like you have some projects you have been wanting to get to. Thanks for sharing
Pretending it’s summer ….in your alpine sweater… just had to laugh… and preserving food is sooooo influenced by a parent’s example… so don’t underestimate what the kids think, and may end up doing eventually!
Yes, the back pasture would be great for a steer. You might want to get 2 as they are herding animals. We have about the same amount of pasture with 2 steers & a milk cow. I say do it!
That saw is just so adorable! I check out the price and for me it would be about $300! Doing the Dave Ramsey plan, so I'm thinking that probably wouldn't be the best purchase! 😂 Maybe next year. 😏
Hey~ Just a thought when u mentioned ur down on ur grass fed beef or only so much goat meat but not so thrilled eating the turkey meat, u could mix the turkey meat with ur other meats to stretch each of them a bit. I do that when we r getting low on ground beef and plenty of ground pork. Really don't taste the difference and it helps stretch out the ground beef.
Your floor looks beautiful! You guys look like your around our age, and I’m looking for information on small homesteading for two. Sometimes it feels like there’s just so much to do and it can feel overwhelming!
R & T, we are building canning shelves. We have been watching your tours, and T’s fixes to your shelves. We are putting the 2x4’s with the vertical 4” showing for extra support, plus four supports underneath each shelf. My basement is 7”, so we figure one big shelf on the bottom for buckets, one large quart shelf and 3 pint shelves. Thanks so much for your videos and assistance. Boy plastic heavy duty shelves don’t cut it.
The cow raising is rewarding.. but remember that cows are very social animals. They go crazy when they are alone.. Having just 1 isn't a good idea.. need atleast 2.. we have 3..
I just came here to say that. I understand why people want just one cow, but being raised on a dairy farm and seeing actual friendships between cows, it hurts to see a cow alone. They're herd animals! ❤
@@1870s We successfully raised a single bottle calf with our sheep and goats. She was very content with them as her family and ended up being the leader of the herd.
Love how you talked about how your kids are doing different things that go along with this lifestyle, i have a late age teen and she sometimes seems interested in what i try to do with the garden and canning but she is a teen..... So your saying there's a chance lol 😂😂😂
Definitely get two steers. That was the big mistake we made with our first round of homegrown beef! One steer and he always made trouble and was too rough with us!
That is a beautiful green meadow! Love the clover, I could see a very happy steer back there :) I just green! So ready for spring to get here and stay.
Don't feel so bad about not getting started on the barn, I am trying to catch up from last summer, tripped over the garden hose, smashed my shoulder up and all summer dealing with that, garden fell behind as just couldn't keep up with it and then surgery and therapy to deal with also . All is good now but feel overwhelmed so this year I am farm marketing and not canning . Taking the year off and try to catch up at a reasonable pace. It has lifted a load off and now I feel like I can catch up . But got big plans next year for the garden. I hope you both have a great summer.
Nice video! We can our venison at least one deer my husband shoots three the we freeze a lot ! We buy a pig in the fall and split with our son already butchered and ready to freeze ! We have a barn and land to raise our own but the cost to buy a cow, pig, chickens, and raise and feed them plus the time needed to put into them we just buy farm raised animals already processed and ready to freeze Plus I get attached 🤷♀️🤷♀️. We’re also getting to retirement age and we want to travel and it’s just to hard when you have all these animals to take care of ! But hoe rewarding it would be !
Rachel, your honey pickles look wonderful and I could hear them crunch. I totally fail with pickles, they never crunch. What is your secret?? Thank you!
Yes having cows is great, you will need to invest in good fencing, you will need hay and or feed and cows need company so will need more than 1. Its a real investment and hard to go on vacations.
Hope to help my dil buy a pregnant yak next year . Their meat , and milk are supposed to be super high nutritionally. They live in Wisconsin and can withstand the much colder temperatures!

Research growing Yellow Rattle to suppress grass so you can grow food in that back pasture for the bees. Gardener's World is where I first heard about it.
Rachel, may I ask where you get the Amish Coleslaw Dressing Mix that you use in your homemade mayo now? Do you get it at the store you have been visiting?
@@1870s well, you know what taste better than beef? Deer of course.
