Thank you very much for this clarification about how to properly setup. This makes good sense and it works very well. At the ripe old age of 70 with six years into the game, I'm hitting balls much straighter, further and more confidently. With me it's not about driving the ball a country mile, it's about sending it with some distance where it can be found and continue the pace of play. Many thanks!
    🙂

Where do I even begin with my comments on this video? I’ll start with the end: this is an absolute revelation. 30 years of consistent inconsistency and only knowing the pleasure of compression when it would happen by accident. I had a terrible session at the range yesterday-fats, thins, slices, hooks, all after having a pretty decent time of it lately.
I came home dejected about my prospects for a round with friends the next day. While feeling sorry for myself at home I stumbled onto this video and it just resonated. Could it be that easy and that effective? I went right back to the range and OMG compression. Explosive power. Accuracy. And all with ridiculous levels of ease. So good in fact, during my round today I had to consistently go one or two clubs down for all my yardages. I felt like I had a cheat code all day. Thank you for this amazing video - easiest follow ever.

I agree 100% that this is the best grip video ever made! Thank you for showing the move with a tennis racquet (I grew up playing tennis), the hammer (I framed houses after high school), and baseball bat (my son is a switch hitter)! It’s like this video just completes the circle of golf! The fact that this grip allows for a power fade is evidence enough for me that it is correct. A lot of people disagree but they fail to see the positions we should put ourselves in at impact and that is where it all matters! Thanks for an incredible take and I will be rewatching this a lot💪🏻💪🏻👍🏻

Glad to see a fellow golfer who went through the trials.... I've played tennis from 10 to 18, ranked in the midwest tons and tons of reps. I have to use the strong grip or I might as well not even play golf. I CANT undo all those reps as a child.

Add Fred Couples, Lee Trevino, and Mac O'Grady. O'Grady actually explained this in detail with how the joints and ligaments move. He stated that Hogan had everything right except the grip. Also, that Homer Kelly of The Golfing Machine had got the "requirement" of the flat left wrist at impact wrong as well. Great video here! This "strong" grip is actually "neutral" for going to the target as you say. I hit a straight ball on most shots with this grip. Many a young golfer who naturally gripped it strong, have been destroyed by teachers who made them grip it "correctly." It's really a shame.

I've studied all the greats, Bobby jones had written about the grip stating the lead grip must be on top of the club, the so called strong position, i used that grip to start with and hooked too much. I then switched to neutral, maintained a 4 handicap but would always remember the words he wrote, now in the last few years i went back to the grip you and bobby highly recommended. You have explained how getting behind the ball and hitting to the target made sense with the strong grip. I formally and officially rename that grip , THE SHAWN CLEMENT GRIP. Hopefully your explanation of the anatomy and your shawn Clement grip will forever be preserved for future generations. The way most instructors are teaching is for hitting balls 8 hrs a day 6 days a week, you definitely have changed this and i can happily say my distance has increased along with accuracy and more important than anything , repeatability.

I gotta say that this lesson was pretty amazing. I changed my grip from a strong grip to an "anatomically correct grip" and used the handle going low with the finish to the target....and I'm shocked at how effortless it feels with a lot of power. I was skeptical at first, but, wow. Thank you!

This is not only the best video I have ever watched on the grip, but possibly the best golf tutorial video period. I was really struggling with using a traditional neutral grip, watched this video last week, and decided to give this strong neutral grip a shot. What a difference! The change could be seen immediately, and compression for days! Not only does this video get your hands in a better position, but it forced me to change my body position a little at address, two birds with one stone.

Best video EVER Shawn...thank you for articulating this concept with so much attention and care. I have an extra small bone in each of my wrists, which limits my movement (call it fixed wrists). When I was young, I could bow my left wrist and square up the club, and was a fairly powerful player. Now at 50, I don’t have that flexibility, as my wrists have continued to lose mobility. Bowing my wrist now also hurts. I’ve been struggling to find my issue, as I was taught to use a neutral grip 35 years ago, and it’s the only one I’ve known, and why bowing my wrist worked. While watching this video, I grabbed a hammer, and went through the exercise with you and Savannah. The lightbulb went off! Grabbing my 7 iron, and then working through the position of the club and grip like I’m pounding a nail in the direction of my target. I’m just swinging in my living room, and I feel the power back in my swing when I get everything anatomically lined up, and my fixed wrists feel free and no pain. You sir, just changed my whole outlook for this season. What your doing with your channel is simply awesome. If it wasn’t raining outside, I’d be running the the range...can’t say thank you enough.

Shawn Clement it’s been a little over a week and wanted to give you a follow up. I’ve been working with the new grip for just over a week, really about an hour to 90 mins a day. I’m really not sure where to begin...just wish I’d done this 20 years ago. In the past 5 years, my swing has just gone through so much turmoil. With age, my physical limitations, and a couple injuries from my youth that are catching up to me, I’ve just suffered to swing like I was taught to do 36 years ago. I was losing confidence!
I put my new swing to the test on the course the last two days. I’ve walked 9 holes both days playing with my 16 year old son, who is an excellent player and a 7.9 index...I’ve slowly creeped up to a 14.4. The last two rounds, I’ve bested the young buck by 2 strokes each day. I’m 2 clubs longer with a controlled effort 3/4 swing (where I was was hitting a 7, now it’s a 9), haven’t changed my swing speed a bit, and I’m hitting the center of the club more than not. My driver is 27 yards longer. I’m compressing the ball again, and I’ve developed a beautiful smooth draw. My misses are now just a little more left of target, where I turn the light draw into a little heavier draw. This has taken the whole right side of the golf course out of play...
I haven’t felt this confident in so long. I guess the thing that is most amazing to me, is I have no swing thoughts cluttering my round. I pick and intermediate target, line up, do a few perpetual motion swings, pick my spot where my club is bottoming out, set my club there, shuffle up to the ball and swing to the outside of my target. I’m snapping the ball Shawn! My effort feels relaxed and controlled, and the club is releasing on auto pilot. My goal this summer is to get back down under a 10 index, and I honestly don’t believe it will take long.
For others who may read this, the biggest challenge for me was moving the ball a little further back in my stance. 30 plus years of the ball more forward is a hard change. But, this is where the perpetual motion drill is showing me is the right spot, and I just trust it.
I’ll be signing up for your premium content this week. I can’t wait to find a few more gems. You have changed my game and I’m in love with it again. There isn’t the right words to say enough thanks to you and Savannah. You are giving so much to the golf community...

Sean, I looked at your grip video and incorporated it into my game today. I practiced for about 10 minutes with the grip and went out and played nine holes and shot a 40 in heavy wind. I’m quite pleased with the result in as much as most of my shots were, beautiful penetrating balls getting me on the green and regulation on every hole. Thanks for this video. I am now a believer in a strong grip or as before I wouldn’t even attempt it.

    I LOVE THIS!!!
I am a carpenter in my business and this made soooo much sense. About 17 years ago a good friend of mine who was an assistant golf pro told me to think about my swing as attempting to break a concrete wall with a sledgehammer.
This video brought it all back and as I pause the video, took out my 7 iron in my living room, mimicking the moves shown and seeing the result it all clicked!!!
Thank you so much for this video. I particularly like the part where you hold the golf club out horizontal, turn the face inward, re adjust the grip, and let it go.
Your simplicity and practicality in the way you reach is phenomenal. Especially when your daughter can carry a 7 iron as far as she does. It has to be real, and I believe it is!❤️🏌🏼‍♂️⛳️

Great explanation of grip. I like the way Shawn says, "grip neutral, but turn the club head to closed a bit". THAT made all the difference! Took all the tension out of my arm and hand and allowed me to focus on the delivery to the target. I knew this.....but was resistant! No longer!

I kind of came to this grip the way Sav suggests; Just Do It
Frankly I had never watched any of your stuff but I did watch and sign up for Alex Fortes’ training. There you present your complete swing approach under “Senior Golf Swing” without most of the ‘why’ and just with a focus on the ‘how’. Because Alex’s stuff was working for me, I just did what you said in that “Senior” series of vids and Did It. And It Works!! Thanks for doing your thing on Alex’s site in SHORT FORM.
As a 67yo golfer that started at 65, my swing is still pretty raw. With a few lessons and all the TH-cam stuff I’ve cobbled together some game but now I’ve just completely adopted your swing approach because in one outing my iron distancea all increased by 10 yards or more (measured and averaged). And after a 2 weeks of playing and practicing your swing I’ve had my 2 best rounds ever (101 and 104).
I’m impatient and time is precious. Your lessons are long, detailed, and informative, but outside my ADD tolerance. I recommend others to just accept this approach as effective and Just Do It. You’ll save time and experience a quantum jump in performance. Straighter, longer, less slicing for sure.
Thanks again for “Senior Swing System”! I’m sure you have that packaged elsewhere, perhaps on your site. Go there people!

So I subscribed! I have been looking from someone to justify how I developed my own swing theory and this video is it. Tried Ben Hogan's method and that was a train wreck. I started searching around for other techniques and came across Henrik Stenson. That is when I discovered Pete Cowen and started modeling after some of his techniques. Took about 10 strokes off! Cowen's bucket drill is what really started me on the path of a strong grip. The fact that I was framing houses as a kid with my father back when nail guns did not exist led me to exploring an association between swinging a hammer and swinging a golf club. I learned how to swing a hammer real well and has stayed with me all my life. At 50 I can push a 7 iron 180-185 in warm weather. P - 145. 5I - 200-205. All because of this grip technique.
So much of what Shawn has covered justifies all the hours i spent with my Skytrak in the basement! Been doubting myself and keep exploring weaker grips. But think I may stick with this and work on fine tuning...
Overall great video and great information to reference from!

Man, this video is absolutely perfect. I grew up playing golf and quit after high School for years and once I started playing again got back down to a 2 and had grown up playing a strong grip. In an attempt to gain a little more consistency, I moved to a more neutral grip. After regressing by trying different things in my setup and trying to get a little more mechanically sound, I was all over the place so I reverted back to the strong grip, and this video really helps with the movement through the ball. I always struck the ball well when I had this strong grip and played more by feel. Great video this is how I grew up getting instruction more by feel or different moves, rather than by getting taught mechanics only.

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You bet David! I keep telling my students they are Pinocchio without the strings; perfect human learning machines. What they need to focus on is a simple task-like see “grass whip training shawn clement” and see how simple cutting grass is and see how fast the SOUND golf swing appears by doing that! Then add the right grip-club relationship for how you want the ball to behave in the air and you are good to go! The vast majority of golfers need this grip but some don’t need it as they have been able to perform from a young age without it; guys like Matt Wolff. But others like Paul Azinger and Brendan Steel (and my daughter) are on the other end of the spectrum and do amazing things with a golf ball.

The last 10 minutes or so of this video is gold. I was playing with a closed club face but only using my arms to square it up at address. As a result there was lots of tension in my lead arm/shoulder like you pointed out. I could actually get away with it for the most part on the course but it would always come back to haunt me especially in pressure situations and with my longer clubs. The result being a hook. After watching your video I’m now able to make the proper adjustment with my body and not having all that tension in my lead arm I’m actually hitting the ball farther and more accurate! It’s also a bonus that I’m a righty who plays golf left handed (lead arm dominant) so these videos really hit home. Must be a Canadian hockey thing.

Super important for me at 83 having played for 62 years, now working to change from a neutral grip with straight face and bowed left wrist to your neutral grip with closed face while avoiding the error you show of the wrong type of strong grip. Your emphasis on the anatomically correct movement and showing that wrists in that position may look cupped but are not is genius.

When the coach speaks about grip, you listen. Period. This is another masterclass that I will be watching a few times over. The tip about combining a slightly neutral grip with a slightly closed club face then a slight tilt to ‘naturally’ have a square club face and stronger grip is genius. Safe to say that trying to artificially manufacture strong grip by twisting your hand / over the top of the shaft without considering body angles and position is not only unnatural but uncomfortable to the degree you may end up producing a slice versus a draw. Sean, this method makes 100% sense and can’t wait to try it during my next practice session.

I've been playing golf for more than 30 years, been down to a 7hcp in my prime but I have the most traditional swing from the 80's, except the driver where I improved on my technique over the years, I've had a dozen or more pro's working on my swing over the years, never have I heard of "throwing the ball", actually, even on the tour today good players of the irons and woods are called good ball strikers not throwers. This is pivotal! Because of the pandemic I'll be out on the course this weekend for the first time in a year! I'm confident in my abilities to put "throwing the ball" to the test and will let you know how it goes! Cheers from Portugal!

I'm so glad this video came up in my recommendations. I'm still very new to the game despite having taken it up casually a couple of years ago. I've watched enough videos to understand that everything in the golf swing starts with the grip. I've tried to fix my power slice by strengthening my grip artificially (turning the hands over) to try and keep the club face from spraying open. I understand that there's a lot of possible causes but this video addresses a lot of it - not only grip but the physiology behind the movement of the swing itself. I may have been going about it all wrong and will be trying this at the driving range ASAP. Thank you!

Grip changes are dangerous Band-Aids to the us mortals.
I think of it like checking with your doctor when you change a medication. You have to know (or ask someone that is trained in that field) what interactions or compensations need to happen to accommodate it.
Obviously, coaches love to recommend neutral grip because they know most people will be exposed to all the other coaches teaching aspects of the swing with neutral grip. It's a broken cycle.
Finding a good pro to give you a quick check up to make sure you're mechanically correct is a blessing. I can still play golf and improve even in my older years thanks to a minor change recommended to me that I wouldn't even have considered to be "allowed" in the grip.
Due to pain in my tendons between my thumb and wrist, he showed me what is essentially the Sarazen grip with my thumb off the spine altogether.
With that came weeks of learning the other components to the swing that need to happen to let me swing that way. Then relearning the "short thumb" and "long thumb" versions of the grip to put those shots back in my bag.
Long story... Because a grip change isn't simply holding the club differently at address as you've demonstrated.

I wasted 20 years playing golf with a ‘neutral’ face. I think what needs to be noted (Shawn had numerous times) is that not all players will make contact with an open face. Players like me make an aggressive motion with the upper body often come over the top with with a square or closed face. Hard pulls ensue!
With shawn’s method .... the OTT sensation is so strong in the mind that our bodies don’t want to do it.

Hi Shawn, 44yo, 12-hdcp here- I have really made an effort over the last couple seasons to work on and improve my lag, staying flat with an inside out swing. I have my stretches where it all seems to work but I still struggle with over the top early release and/or making poor contact with an open face or worst yet when it's all out of whack I'll straight hosel a 7iron OB right (those are fun). I watched this video a couple times and once I processed the angles and why a closed club face with a standard grip works (very odd concept for me to wrap my head around at first) I went to the backyard to practice on the net. Holy sh*t man?!? I was ripping and I mean straight blistering my irons, hybrids, woods....the sound was honestly shocking to me. I've been completely aware of the WIG grip philosophy, I'm also a premium member with access to all that fantastic content. However, I really felt uncomfortable with a strong trail hand. Shawn, sharp as a razor caught it in the last swing review he did for me, and I went back and reviewed all the grip vids to see what I was missing. Well, what's doing it for me (work in progress!) is the process of arriving at the strong grip: taking a neutral grip over a closed face, AND THEN "getting behind it". That's very, very different to getting into position and then adjusting your grip to compensate and "be strong". It's a subtle thing but it's changed how I think about holding the club and now my trail hand is stronger and feels like it's in a great position for what I need to do.
I'm striking the ball beautifully the majority of the time; and that joy is just on tap because of WIG. 🙌🏻🤙🏻👊🏻

Youre probably right especially for beginners, women and office workers! but for low hcp golfers the grip is the hardest thing to change, its taken me 2 months to Slightly strengthen my Hogan neutral grip. I have noticed that a lot of top pros have a strong top hand but most have a neutral low hand and like most pros learnt as a kid. After 7 weeks off my new slightly stronger grip gave 6 holes of pull draws apart from the driver which was great.

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  4 ปีที่แล้ว

The key is to be able to confirm that your release and peak speed is well through or past the ball before you make any adjustments back towards the neutral way! If you pull draw one left, ask yourself: what was my focus just before I pulled the trigger? Was I worried about the ball or a swing position or was I clear on the feel of the delivery into my flight plan?

Shawn's comment on turning the club face 45 degree to the left at address, are INCREDIBLE . I saw this youtube last night so this morning I went to practice greens , hitting 10, 20 and 30 yds with a sand wege and 59 ded wedge. Magically, my ball direction was straight and the dispersion pattern was TIGHT. The balls seemed to have more spin now. How can turning the club face close to 25, 35 degree would make the ball go straight ? Only Shawn Clement can know. THANK YOU.

This video is the complete opposite of every other video I've seen. It's great. Actually, this explains perfectly why I've started to slice as I've put more power into my golf shots. As I put more power into my shot, I have to move my body more into the shot creating more lag and that opens the face. I need a stronger grip now. Bowing the wrist is VERY uncomfortable for me.

Very good! Now you can start compressing the ball again and get some ball speed and confidence; this will feed into your swing and you can deliver with more assertiveness! 🤛👍😀💪

Hey Shawn I have been watching a lot of footage and teaching of Moe Norman and what you were saying about a neutral grip closed face corresponds yo what he did by setting up with the club far behind the ball but the face staying square. This allowed him to swing hard and on plane with the club staying square longer. Good stuff

Love the closer (bigger) picture. The framing can be better now w/ so many people on set who can operate the camera. Much easier to see your points from the closer point of view. Excellent content as usual. Very nice presentation w/ thorough explanation. Please keep 'em coming.

Hi Shawn an excellent presentation. No one really talks about strong grips in this way. Instinctively I take a strong grip with my right hand and it does not feel comfortable getting the v's pointing more neutral for me as people or other instructors would suggest . I have been reading old books lately many on henry cotton. He advocates strengthening the wrists through various exercises like hitting a Tyre which I do most days and grip strengthen exercises to hold the club and stop it slipping and turning the face through impact. I agree with him 100% on this point as I notice better contact with no slipping. However reading Mr cottons book he is very much of the opinion of a two knuckle lead hand grip rather than a super strong four knuckle grip. He says four knuckle grip lead hand players cannot use the wrists properly in the swing. He says only two knuckle players can use wrists correctly. However this didn't really sit with me as I do not like my hand to be more neutral it feels weak. However watching your video here has really confirmed to me that your hands with four knuckle grips work just as good if not better than two knuckle plus the right hand super strong. Its natural to me and I see the benefits with what your presenting here. Thank you kindly for the information

I do love you videos and I have watched this video many times for the confirmation of my strong grip. Thank you.
One last question… in tennis if you have tennis elbow you grip too strong or if you listened to Martina Navratilova. When you had tennis elbow she would tell you to use a different brand of a racquet. I played with head and Wilson and couldn’t play with a babolot. Could it be that the PXG’s I play with could be balanced differently and I should try other clubs? Aren’t clubs weighted differently?

Hitting on Mats, holding off the natural release of the arm anatomy, or hitting too down on the ball will get you possible issues there, but from one brand to the next…this is interesting…

I have now watched this video three times and finally understand what you are getting at with the approach. Thank you. Can't wait to get out on the range and try this out.
