In regards to the Empire being fascists, I think it's probably relevant that they pretty much all seem to be humans, whereas the Rebels have at least a few aliens on their side.

Nx57ytre what’s even more ironic is that as far as I recall Palpatine himself wasn’t even a human supramcist unless him stating he was allowed him to gain something like in the case of Dooku. Thrawn shows that Palpatine didn’t care who or what you were as long as your existence could be used to serve him you were alright.

12:47 To be fair, the Star Wars Universe is a particular case because the Galaxy has been stuck into a loop of death and rebirth of the Republic for basically thousands of years. And even when the republic is in power, it seems to be incapable of doing anything but preserving the status quo. A status quo that doesn't mind slavery. Or aristocracy.
In a sense, in this Galaxy the past haunts the present and makes it rot into a mimickry of what has already happened.
So basically it's fascism vs capitalist realism. That's depressing.

That is what I sort of like about Lucas prequel. How a cold war can start over something as boring as trade agreements, quickly turn hot and said war be used by fascists to subvert a free society in the name of order and safety. Edit: To be clear, I don’t like the sequel trilogy but I find the “it is bad because it has more POC politics” argument a bad argument to criticize the new trilogy. The movie trilogy isn’t bad because it has rose and Finn. It is bad because it is absurd to progress the story after return of jedi definitely wrapped up the story of anakin skywalker and ended the major antagonist in the original two George Lucas trilogies. I found Robert Paxton's "The Anatomy of Fascism" to be very instructive. It defined fascism more than anything as a process, driven by ultranationalist populism, which erodes democracy from within. This video hits it right on the head. The failure of the prequel films was their inability to really grasp this process, despite them showing it pretty explicitly. I wish Lucas had succeeded. People often grasp for Star Wars metaphors when describing the Trump admin's many crimes and I'd like it if the films gave people better material to work with.

In the Expanded Universe,(Both legends and even Canon) the style of fascism by the Empire was expanded upon. With the Empire having an anti-alien agenda, claiming that humans were the superior species in the galaxy and that all aliens were inferior. Empire propaganda would talk on how humans have shaped the galaxy and that aliens were a threat. This kind of propaganda was enforced during and after the Clone Wars. This led to the conquest, enslavement and massacre of many alien species.

In the EU, there's only two alien species that the Empire wholly accepts into its culture. The Sith Pureblood and the Chiss. This is explicitly seen in SWTOR.

This is wonderful. Honestly the best thing is that you broke apart the "let the past die" message. I have seen people who hate the film and even those who love it use that as the message. I have no idea how the fuck they got that idea. Killing the past does not achieve anything, Luke's past failures are still there, he hasn't killed them, hell he chooses specifically not to kill his failure but rather to humiliate him to save others. Killing the past would mean essentially denying historical materialism.
This is always a particularly fascinating topic, particularly since SW, even when pretty overt, does run a risk of normalization. Like you said, they keep it vague so they can sell tee-shirts and shit. I'll admit, I have my fair share of stormtrooper figures, but there is often still this gut feeling that the franchise fetishizes the imagery a tad much. Would you consider covering that topic at some point? Like with how toxic dicks get the absolute wrong message from fight club, or how some SW fans can fully have progressive politics, but somehow play devils advocate cause they wrap themselves in the context of the franchise and forget the allegory's real consequences?

Very interesting point about the First Order. I noticed while watching that here in Latinamerica we have some similar movements trying to bring back "past glory" in the form of the military dictatorships. Hell Bolsonaro was very outspoken about how much he loved that time and different politician in Bolivia, Ecuador and Chile have the same speech. Which is terrifying given our current situations and the U.S' threats to "stop insurrection". The scar left by autoritarianism (which was fascist here) is still fresh and many fear a new intervention due to our recent struggles with Power to gain our basic rights.

The weird thing about Star Wars is that it isn't just the in-universe fascists that want to return to the past. They are always trying to bring back the Republic and the Jedi, things from the past. The original trilogy and prequels are just some Boomer's nostalgia for the 50's. The past and nostalgia are a ball and chain on this franchise. A lot of fans just want rehashes.
