However that is capital intensive compared to the moisture farmers. In essence you need economy of scale and once you scale up production you will produce so much water that the price of water on Tatooine will fall below the cost of production. I never got this, Saw’s movement is directly based on the anarchist partisan movement from the early 20th century (who were further left than the Bolsheviks in the October revolutions)
@@alexlammyman2467could you be more specific on these 20th century anarchist movements? Not doubting you just wanna examine them in comparison to Bolsheviks
I like the fact that you recognize that there are decent people all over the political spectrum. Some ideas may be foolish, but they don't become evil until a person enacts them that way. For instance, a very, very libertarian community could be wonderful if all the people are good but dangerous if the people are evil. I read a book by Mike Huckabee years ago expecting him to advocate small government without question. But in his very first chapter, he creates a scenario (prior to the defend police days) in which all the police left the streets of Detroit. What would the organized gangs of Detroit do to its residents without the restraint of the police? Obviously, a reduction in government by shrinking the police is a frightening mental image in an already dangerous city like Detroit from a couple of decades ago. He argued that "self-government" is a much more important issue than "small government" vs. "big government." I appreciated his admission that knee-jerk shrinking of government can be foolish if a society's turmoil is caused by sources in its populace. But if the problem can be traced to government, is not being aided by existing government programs, or is being worsened by government programs, then those should be rolled back. And when the helpfulness of government action is questionable, the benefit of the doubt should always be given to individual people and away from collective government. I respected this argument because the issue of "self-government" is an issue that everyone can get on board with. Most of American society agrees that if you men would make good choices and stay away from violent crime, instead choosing to work hard and be productive (i.e. govern themselves) then a lot of solutions that either political side touts would immediately be moot. This is where you see common ground with politically liberal pastors and politically conservative pastors. When they have dialogue, they all agree that churches and fathers have the most important jobs in young men's lives and that all the solutions that the DNC or the GOP offer are barely window dressing in the life of an honorable young man. That's why I love the dialog you mention. I am very committed to my good ol' Republican values, but those politics don't hold a candle to how important I believe it is to teach my kids to behave honorably in this world. Today, my 17 year old son is flying out of the country with a group of young men to do some building in Mexico for a school down there. He is doing this part because of adventure and part because of his faith and part because of his love for his neighbor. But it is all with the kind of honor I hope for my son (and for myself!!). It has nothing to do with left vs. right. In fact, he has no clue about the politics in the village or the school. As I have spent time overseas, I understand that our view of left vs right doesn't always match other nation's politics. That's why we might find ourselves rooting for a fictional character holding the opposite viewpoint from us. Who knows where we would land if placed in a different context? I am deeply moved by the communists citizens of Stalingrad whenever I am reminded of their sacrifice during WW2. Christians can side with Muslim Uygurs in China. US Democrats can side with right-wing citizens being oppressed in Cuba or Venuzuela. Even Florida democrats root for Cuban exiles to make it here safely, then have to deal with the majority of them voting GOP. But FL Dems want Cubanos safety because of the decency of their hearts, in spite of their own party affiliation.
I like what you said about self-governance. Reminded me of community policing. Community policing is one of the main tenants of police reform. It's about having a stake in the place you live in-- not being some nameless law man from the town over
@@natMMI I would love for more local leaders in poorly policed communities to discuss solutions that aren't politically charged on a national level. So many of our left v right stuff federally is meaningless (or at least less meaningful) on a local level.
The entire problem with this theory is that NY, San Francisco, Chicago, and Seattle prove that super liberal communities inevitably become dangerous. That's why ppl and businesses are leaving them. Liberalism amounts to placing an emphasis on individualism without restraint. It sounds nice to think ppl can be good in super liberal community, but the proof is in the pudding that it's a delusion.
This is such a great idea and it really does highlight the difference between political, economic, etc philosophy and people living in a real world. Each of the Star Wars characters you discussed are very complex characters and so they don't fit neatly and simply into any political, economic, etc philosophy. Which is, like you said at the start, is why we shouldn't be so quick to assume things about people based on what they say their guiding philosophies are (if they even say one) because people just don't fit so easily in those boxes. I mean, even if you used a three dimensional political compass where the x-axis still represents the characters' economic philosophy/ideology, the y-axis still represents the characters' governance philosophy/ideology, and the z-axis represents the characters' cultural/social philosophy/ideology it'd still be difficult to place these characters neatly into any of the quadrant boxes. But I think these kinds of mental exercises are good and can help us think more deeply about the types of philosophies and ideologies in our own world and time and be more able to make more nuanced understandings of not only our leaders and those who want to be our leaders, but also about ourselves and how one's philosophies and ideologies are in a state of constant change around any given topic. Great video and well put together! I think you picked some great Star Wars characters to use in this example and gave a thorough explanation about them without ascribing any singular philosophy or ideology to them (especially since in the Star Wars universe those terms/labels wouldn't be used) and then showed them on the compass. Thanks for making and sharing this! I know I don't comment very often, but I do enjoy your videos. I love that you discuss Star Wars from so many different angles!
And it’s crazy to see how far the channel is come. I had trouble finding this video so I looked up generation tech politics, and I found 175 video playlist, and the very first video on that playlist was about Star Wars characters and their political alignments crazy to compare the videos and see how far the channel has come
This could be an idea/theme for a interesting series of videos. Maybe another video idea, same layouts, but use different jedi across the star wars spectrum and rate their closeness with the force. Could be s fun way to show who would be more likely to turn to the Dark Side, might even find some surprise answers tok
Mon Mothma also scrapped the entire fleets of Imperial defectors and the republic, on a personal note in a table top game of stars wars mothma was one of the reasons my character could not in good conscience stay on with the republic and went pirate (mando pirate).
A bit of galactic political insight: some galactic republic senators represented more than just one planet or system. For example, the senator from Naboo actually represented an entire galactic sector known as the "Crommell Sector" which had more than thirty civilized inhabited planets as well as several thousand settled dependencies. (This information according to and provided by the E.K. Johnston book, "Queen's Peril.")
That was a very enjoyable video! I really thought the part on Mon Mothma was interesting. You could do another one of these with other leaders, such as Tarkin, Heego Demas, Count Dooku, or whoever and I doubt anyone would complain.
I've always thought of Palpatine as Stalin in the way he gained power and then crushed everyone beneath him. Wearing the mask of the people's champion while removing freedoms a little at a time until its too late and the government controls everything.

Please do more of these. I am very interested in seeing where more characters fall on this compass. What about Bail Organa? Count Dooku would be a great one to look at. How about Tarkin? Dutchess Satine Kryze? Jack Black and Lizzo? Greef Karga?
I see Saw Guerrera as an Anarchist fighter who would start ruling as a Socialist if he came to power, and would turn Communist afterwards. I truly enjoyed this video. Thanks!
Loved this! Please do more. With that said, Pally would sit more left. Like midway left. Nationalization was liberaly used. Even Lando from Empire strikes back saw the shadow of the greedy empire. Purposely, he kept his operation small and quiet. Also there where many refrences to the empire being more socialist that didn't make it to the final cut in A new hope. With him being a psychopath, palipatine had to restrain himself from outright controlling everything directly. The cutout organizations like the minning guild and Kuwat hyperknotics where heavily influenced by politically connected people. Not unlock the CCP who uses generals of their army to run factories for private companies.
I'd like to add this also applies to religious views also as in, calmly rationally emphatically discussing things. I have learned a great deal this way.
Ummm Im pretty sure Boba Fett is more center-right while Saw Guerrera is more lib-left. Saw is an anarchist who is pretty much against anyone trying to take power from the people. I agree he doesn't care much about economics, but that should make him libertarian center, not a lib-right. Fett is a mercenary who fights for a fascist empire because he wants money, but then later goes on to become a feudal lord with a sense of "noblisse oblige," that is, he believes he has an obligation as a ruler to protect the poor underneath him. Fett has honor and chivalry, but he isn't exactly a revolutionary.
Alan reminds me of my senior economics teacher You can't tell what his politics are but he always teases you with them. This economic scale should become a regular ones or twice a month thing where he does three or four different characters
Ironic you posted this.. I’ve been thinking about something like this lately. If I existed in Star Wars.. would I be a rebel (restore the republic) or an imperial? Or.. would I even be a reluctant imperial? Reluctant as in: I see the evil the empire does, but also sees the benefits.. aka “what else can there be”.
It's not appropriate to say any benefits existed unless you were on the path of power. It's more appropriate to say you'd be bending around the concepts of comfort, oppression, submission, or insurgency.
Interesting. I would say, for Saw, the moment I saw Luthen Rael refer to him as an anarchist it suddenly clicked that he was meant to be an anarcho-communist revolutionary, but maybe his policies speak for themselves.
I enjoy these, I would like to not only see more individuals, but groups as well. Maybe, break into different planetary groups like the Gungans, Nabooians, Alderaanians, etc. I would also like to see the different tech/trade/crime groups like the Kaminoans, the Hutt, the Separatists, etc.
I would love more videos like this with other Star Wars characters. Especially with many of the prominent Republic senators; it would be cool to see how their ideologies led to who they sided with and who they spake out against.
I'd say it's more fair to label Saw Gerra as an Anarchist he clearly mistrusts any form of government and only cares about his own group he reminds of Nestor Makhno leader of the Insurgent Army of Ukraine during the Russian Civil War.
One critique, your description of left vs right on the axis is from a capitalism=freedom view point. The most consistent difference is what factor of production dominates economic decisions. Capital for right, labor for left, and land for feudalism. Left can also be described as anti capitalist due to blended systems like market socialism being thrown into the left category
This video inspired me to take the political compass test and im basically exactly the same as boba. 3 lines down socially and 4 lines to the left economically. Not sure what that says about me.
Likely nothing, because the Political Compass is very flawed, and unless you're an outright nazi or a caricatural greedy businessman, then you are bound to end up in LibLeft.
I feel like slavery should have been taken into consideration when talking about Palpatine's political views. He's more to the right than that. Also centralising economy doesn't make you left wing if you don't redistribute wealth
This is honestly a huge improvement from the video you made 5 years ago about where the Empire lies on the political scale. Used more accurate definitions of left-right economics instead of "government does stuff = left" and "government doesn't do stuff = right".
Hey Allen I got a video idea, do one about the lucrehulk in Jedi survivor like how it got there and if it's repairable, what happened to it's outer ring, how operational it is, etc

@@lobselvith8 Most people who describe themselves as Anarchist are on the lower left side of the compass. People on the lower right side of the compass describe themselves more often as Libertarians. I was not questioning Saw being an Anarchist, I was questioning him being a Anarcho-Capitalist as opposed to an Anarcho-Syndicalist or some other similar ideology.
I actually adore this video. Please do more of these Alan, its super enjoyable
This video should have a part 2, my suggestions would be Padme Amidala, Princess Leia and Lando Calrisian
I would love to see a series of this! One character per quadrant per episode would be quite digestible and would keep things fresh!
And it’s crazy to see how far the channel is come. I had trouble finding this video so I looked up generation tech politics, and I found 175 video playlist, and the very first video on that playlist was about Star Wars characters and their political alignments crazy to compare the videos and see how far the channel has come
This is where the fun begins
"If you don't vote for me then you ain't black!" Sounds an awful lot like Palpatine.
"My allegiance is to the Republic, to democracy!"
Sometimes all I do is just like the video and fast forward to the end just to hear those words and that's it
Said by one of the oligarchical leaders of a theocratic alchemist warrior order
“I love Demoncracy.”
That was a very enjoyable video! I really thought the part on Mon Mothma was interesting. You could do another one of these with other leaders, such as Tarkin, Heego Demas, Count Dooku, or whoever and I doubt anyone would complain.
This site is becoming my favorite Political Science class; very insightful, but fun!
Excellent topic and video... as always.
I've always thought of Palpatine as Stalin in the way he gained power and then crushed everyone beneath him. Wearing the mask of the people's champion while removing freedoms a little at a time until its too late and the government controls everything.
Palpatine is meant to be Nixon or Bush

SInce you talked politics here, Alan. How about finding out what kind of democracy is used to run the Republic? Liberal democracy? Illberal democracy? Presidential democracy? Parliamentary democracy? Majoritarian democracy? Minority democracy? Dominant-party democracy? Electoral democracy? Authortitarian democracy?
It’s funny because I saw a tweet about the thumbnail and people kept saying no it should be this way or that way without explaining their thoughts even when someone showed the final result there was still complaints
how is this a more rational and adult debate about politics than what even the most respected mainstream news sources can do lol
Because mainstream news outlets are businesses first and foremost. Their primary concern is revenue.
@@SuperGman117 you can get revenue with quality journalism, but that requires more effort, and they want to save time and effort
Can we please get a part 2? I would love to see Leia Organa on the scale. Thanks and well done.

We need more of this. If you do a part 2, I want to hear your take on Karga
Ahem, that's High Magistrate Karga to you! lol
Please do more of these. I am very interested in seeing where more characters fall on this compass.
What about Bail Organa? Count Dooku would be a great one to look at. How about Tarkin? Dutchess Satine Kryze? Jack Black and Lizzo? Greef Karga?
Loved this one! Hope ya make more like this in the future 👍👍
it would help if the 'political compass' wasn't nonsense
It doesn’t pain the whole picture no, but it’s a good starting point for discussion.
it's not actually. The american left vs right is.
Would love to see more of this Allen! =D
Ground News is the perfect sponsor for this video.
I’d love to see another video where Senator Amidala, Nute Gunray, Bail Organa and Duchess Satine fit on the political compass
Brilliant video, well put together with a good cast of characters
Id love to see more of these there is so many great leaders in Star Wars you could probably fill the whole chart
The video we've been waiting for
Aye I remember watching the political compass vids when they first came out.
Good work applying the political compass to Star Wars characters.
Make this a whole series please, it’s pretty interesting to see you take on the politic stance of politically involved Star Wars characters.
I see Saw Guerrera as an Anarchist fighter who would start ruling as a Socialist if he came to power, and would turn Communist afterwards. I truly enjoyed this video. Thanks!
that's kinda how Che Guerra was. Though he became a socialist along the way.
Boy howdy I can only imagine the comments in this one...
Not unlock the CCP who uses generals of their army to run factories for private companies.
the Nazis did the same, every private company Hitler 'privatized' had a 'Komissar' or was owed by the state or his military.
Truly evil has a pattern.
@@royd.4629 indeed, and ignorance of that pattern is how they win, so knowing more about the ideology is key to opposing them.
I would love to see this turned into a series with more and more spots being filled out
I'd like to add this also applies to religious views also as in, calmly rationally emphatically discussing things. I have learned a great deal this way.
Please do a full series of this placing every major leader on the scale
Love content like this.
Also second channel I follow that promotes this. Imma have to get it myself
Please, make this a series.
cool video! best sw channel on youtube.
I agree.
Very happy that my favorite character in all of Star Wars lands around the same place I do (Saw)
I think political spectra as a tool for actual understanding actively do more harm than good but debate and classification for their own sake are fun
Alan reminds me of my senior economics teacher You can't tell what his politics are but he always teases you with them. This economic scale should become a regular ones or twice a month thing where he does three or four different characters
So...is there a separate compass for Borsk Fey'lya from Legends? Does it include incompetent?
I mean he did go down like a bad ass tho
Ironic you posted this.. I’ve been thinking about something like this lately. If I existed in Star Wars.. would I be a rebel (restore the republic) or an imperial? Or.. would I even be a reluctant imperial? Reluctant as in: I see the evil the empire does, but also sees the benefits.. aka “what else can there be”.
It's not appropriate to say any benefits existed unless you were on the path of power. It's more appropriate to say you'd be bending around the concepts of comfort, oppression, submission, or insurgency.
This guy sure knows how to drum up engagement 👍
I love this series
Fun video, Boba takes a W as always
Interesting. I would say, for Saw, the moment I saw Luthen Rael refer to him as an anarchist it suddenly clicked that he was meant to be an anarcho-communist revolutionary, but maybe his policies speak for themselves.
Although Anarcho communist is redundant
How do you mean?

I enjoy these, I would like to not only see more individuals, but groups as well.
Maybe, break into different planetary groups like the Gungans, Nabooians, Alderaanians, etc. I would also like to see the different tech/trade/crime groups like the Kaminoans, the Hutt, the Separatists, etc.
I would love more videos like this with other Star Wars characters. Especially with many of the prominent Republic senators; it would be cool to see how their ideologies led to who they sided with and who they spake out against.
PART TWO!!!!
Needed this video.
Can we get a Jedi & Sith political compass video mega plz?
I’m sorry you’ve got Saw wrong - he’s clearly a Maoist revolutionary!
He decries human cultists etc. Saw should be top left corner with Lenin and Mao.
Maoists are kind of hard to place on this spectrum lol
I'd like to see a part 2.
I'd say it's more fair to label Saw Gerra as an Anarchist he clearly mistrusts any form of government and only cares about his own group he reminds of Nestor Makhno leader of the Insurgent Army of Ukraine during the Russian Civil War.
This is actually a great comparison
That was good ! More !!! More !!! Plz !!!
It's surprising to see Boba land in a similar spot to myself. Though I suppose book of boba fett did a lot to his idealogy.
He fought for indigenous rights and sovereignty on his show.
Excellent comparison
One critique, your description of left vs right on the axis is from a capitalism=freedom view point.
The most consistent difference is what factor of production dominates economic decisions. Capital for right, labor for left, and land for feudalism.
Left can also be described as anti capitalist due to blended systems like market socialism being thrown into the left category
this guy gets it, I was going to comment something similar to this but you nailed it
But..... Sydious loves democracy....
Loved this, MOAR
This was a very interesting video. Are you planning on making this a series?
This video inspired me to take the political compass test and im basically exactly the same as boba. 3 lines down socially and 4 lines to the left economically. Not sure what that says about me.
Likely nothing, because the Political Compass is very flawed, and unless you're an outright nazi or a caricatural greedy businessman, then you are bound to end up in LibLeft.
Id like to see more of this very fun!
Y'know what? 🤔 This is a pretty fun idea!
What other political characters could we fit into this kind of chart and where would they fit in it?
Hey Allen I got a video idea, do one about the lucrehulk in Jedi survivor like how it got there and if it's repairable, what happened to it's outer ring, how operational it is, etc
Welp Palpatine sure's a long game guy...
