      Steve uses 50-110s which aren’t everyone’s cup of tea but apparently if you get his Tech 21 SansAmp you can replicate his sound almost perfectly.

    I would seriously consider this bass as the my dream P Bass. The only draw back is having to remove the neck to access the truss Rod. I'm the kind of player whom frequently makes adjustments for ehatever style of music I'm playing that month. I love the fact that it's a heavier body, paint job is beautiful, great binding, sweet maple 🍁 neck, those SDP-4 pickups sound tremendous I love the bass. If someone offered me a killer deal I'd get it but not for 1350.00 list price. That's absurd for a MIM P.

    Any old P bass will get you there

    • @innocentoctave
      @innocentoctave 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A lot of Steve's sound comes from his low action, and the inevitable fret noise, plus his choice of EQ, which is unusual for a bass player: bass lower than mids, treble high. He gets a very cutting sound, which isn't thought of as 'typical P bass'. You can get very close on any P bass - though obviously a bright-sounding one will be easier - and even on the neck pickup of a J bass. Adding flatwound strings and replacing them before they dull will get you even closer. The P bass is more flexible than its one pickup might suggest.

    @trikkke11 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Same here: Maiden and La Steve particularly made me pick up the bass, but his sound is sort of an enigma and not only due to the instrument. I think we can all agree on that. The Precision must be the most boring and impractical bass I have ever tried. It is too big and its sound is outdated. Unless you're a fan of hybrids = signature versions. And even then...
    1. There's no way a Precision sounds that crisp without fooling around with the amp. Bigtime !
    2. Steve claims he's using flatwounds. I've tried flatwounds and they sound... errrr... flat. Once and never again. Unless you fool around with the amp. Bigtime ! Roundwounds sound waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more crisp default, so why would you use flats and compensate with the amp ?! Or by slapping harder ?!
    It's all make believe. I sound way more Harris than Harris without this bass. And with other pick ups. And why would you want to sound like some one else ? I've been laughed at because I supposedly sounded like Steve, without me even trying to sound like him.
    3. And then there's your body. Even your fingers make a difference. I used to play punkrock mayhem party shows of 3 hours and wind tape around my fingers. Just to prevent bleeding. But it also manipulated the sound. Its' all trickery. I love Steve and Maiden, but let's get real: there's more to the equation than just the instrument.

    • @innocentoctave
      @innocentoctave 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Steve's signature Rotosounds - which are supplied with this bass - are apparently unusually bright for flatwounds. He also replaces them before they dull, which most of us couldn't afford to do. As for 'fooling around with amp' - that's what the EQ is there for. The first few examples here you can see that the EQ is set flat. Then the later examples have a more Harris-like EQ: raised treble and mids. The SD pickup is probably also voiced for that sound.
      Steve has a signature tone that can sound odd in isolation - like Lemmy's - but in a mix, or live, it fits perfectly with his band's sound - like Lemmy's.
