Brant, I would love for you to sit down one day while you’re camping and tell us some of the creepiest/weirdest things that have happened to you out there
I hiked it back in 1999 as a child.. like 13. I’m so glad I knew none of this stuff. Every person we ran into was beyond kind and shared food and stories. I don’t know how many shelters we got to and met people and we’d walk into town and get hot dogs and burgers to bring back. The blue ridge mountain section will stick with me forever. It was beautiful and it’s the first time when I was convinced I couldn’t do something but pushed through it and did great. To a kid, that’s a huge building block for life.. and that trail gave me that and a few other good lessons. I still religiously care for my feet.. all these years later the pain and trench foot have not been forgotten lol. Had no idea what I was doing and paid dearly for that one. Good video.
First and foremost, thank you for posting your adventures on the AT trail. Now little bit about myself. In June I turned 65 years young. Then 10 years ago I had my left leg removed below the knee and was on ssdi. I saved my money after all my bills were paid and started to buy my new gear to do a thru hike of the AT. One year after getting my leg removed I was on top of Springer mountain at the shelter. The shelter was almost packed with new hikers. But I noticed one of them from videos on TH-cam. Cataz Hack. He asked me if I had a trail name yet. I said no. This one is yours Peg Leg. Then I told him that back in 1977/78 I did a thru hike of the AT. But in my much younger years with a great friend. Back then my trail name was BigFoot. Only because all the hikers saw my foot prints in the dirt and said, that's a bigfoot. That's how I got it. But I had bad luck the second time, when I got to west Virginia my custom hiking poles broke in half, so I caught a bus to Philly and got on the Amtrak train back to Jacksonville FL I only did it because I saw a woman amputee do a thru hike and said if she can do it so can I. Her trail name was the bionic woman. She gave me the power to get up and go. Now 4 years ago I thought I twisted my back really bad. To make a long story short they found a E-Coli infection on my spinal cord. We killed it before it killed me. But now I can't walk more then 25 feet before having to sit down. My hiking and backpacking days are now gone. But I watch your videos and others who I have followed. But my good friend asked me if I wanted to go camping with him. So in January we are going to Gold Head State Park in Keystone For. For 3 days and two nights. He's going to help me set up my two tents. Only to air them out. But my main tent will be a MSR Elixir 2 tent. The other is my AT tent which is a big Agnes tent. I can't remember thee model name. And depending on the weather, my back can't handle the cold weather so I will bring my north face mummy bag that I used on my first thru hike. If it's warm out I will have my American made quilt. That's rated to -10 degrees. The north face mummy bag is rated to -35 degrees. My mom bought it from a brand new company just for me. How did she know that I would grow up to a 7 foot 3 inch tall man. Nowadays I deal with alot of lower back pains. Taking Percocet and other drugs, like naproxen. And that pain spray called Stopain. That stuff works great and you can get it at Walmart. Just spray it on and let dry then spray your sore area again and feel the pain go away. My backpack was a Osprey Atmos 65 liter pack pack and my stove was a jetboil with the coffee press. And my only two canned goods I had was 2 cans of anchovies. So when I got to a hostel I would buy a frozen pizza and then slice me up some pepperoni from my to large rolls and put a can of anchovies on my pizza. That stopped the other hikers from asking me for a piece of pizza. That's how I met this your girl who was a few years younger then me. She came up to me sitting outside and said do I smell anchovies and I said yes. A long hair middle aged woman three years younger then me. And I said yes it is. Then she asked me for my trail name and I told her. She said thats a strange name. Then I showed her my leg, and said oh I'm sorry. No worries my dear, would you like a slice. From that day forward we hiked together until I left the trail. I found out later that she made it all the way to maine, but coming down that mountain she fell really hard and broke her leg in three places. They had to call for a scooter to get her off the mountain and to a hospital. We still stay in contact with each other. She lives in NJ.. Both times I did some tree knocking and a few times I got a far off knock back. Plus one night a bunch of us heard two of them talking to eachother. Swoop,Swoop,Swoop. And some knocking. The other hikers thought somebody was playing a joke. Nope Squatses were out there. But thank you for sharing your hiking with everybody out there. More people need to get into this hobby. Hell my mom first got me into hiking and then into backpacking. My name now is Big Mike. And my shoe size in a 18 EEEE. A tall man that weighs in at 298 pounds. But that's going to drop. Take care of yourself.

My other gear that I used this last time is a Thermorest neosir mattress, my messkits kit from my first hike. I take that always with me because my second friend Danny died for ALS. A 2 quarts plastic canteen that I filled at fresh water sources. The German water filter, one hose in the water and the other into the canteen, or my 3 liter water bladders. A container of garlic power and black pepper. I don't use salt. As for food I had Clif bars and pop tarts for breakfast. For lunch sometimes I had tuna fish on crackers. And for dinner I had pasta sides or rice sides and I had two large rolls of summer sausage and two long pepperoni sticks. For the pasta sides I had a zip lock bag of powdered milk, plus my Splenda for my coffee. All bag less foods were in ziplock bags. Plus for emergencys I had 2 dinner MRE's. As for clothes I had a few hiking tee shirts with pockets and basketball shorts. A raincoat and skirt and a light wind breaker and a down parka. No underwear. Plus a few darn tuff socks, only because I only needed one sock to change every few days because I'm a amputee. A wrench for my leg to tighten the screws. And my ball cap. No sunglasses, my glasses change from light to dark. My small troll with a golden handle and a hand saw like you got. My knive was a gift from my mom many years ago so that's what I had, a military bar. It has never let me down and two spare fuel cans for my jetboil. And a knit cap. A metal GI cup and a plastic hospital cup which were on the outside clanning, to keep the bears away. A P-38 can opener a master blaster, a roll of toilet paper in a zip lock bag. And my neck wallet. Watch out for wild boars. One nearly tore our tent down rooting and trying to get in...be careful. The AT is not like it was in the 70s...The wild people are now worse than the wildlife.😮

It was quite a long hike for a beginner.
If some came up to me and said you can have a million dollars or be able to walk like you used to do. I would pick the second. I miss hiking in the woods so much it hurts sometimes
That would be one of the reasons I carry a Grayl - no waiting for a water tab or bleach or anything like that to take effect. I use the Platypus most of the time, but the Grayl gives anything suspect a second filtering.
i had odd encounter while hiking boundary peak in nevada. i had seen a bright light on a mountain far a way from me...odd becuase there is nothing that should cause it out there. i kept climbing up boundary peak....dead tired....only person out there....then as im nearing the top i see a blonde haired woman at top....in pony tail...i saw no pack...and she looked very fresh...we waive at each other and she skips away. im confused , but am happy there is someone up there to take a summit pic of me...i get up there and she is no where to be seen......i was only person

I'm always looking for things out of the ordinary. After spending days or weeks in the woods, my eyes start to pick up on things that shouldn't be there.
I’d love to see the Scottish Highlands! They were part of the same mountain range as the Appalachian with the Atlas, as the central Pangean Mountain range, so technically we share the same mountains haha
Some of my other gear was a battery to charge my phone. Plus the cords to charge both of them. My headlamp i bought at Walmart white and red lights. My pack liner i used a 55 gallon trash bag, heavy duty. My first aid kit was like yours expect I had my needles and Novolog for my diabetes. The big Agnes tent did not come with a ground cloth but I bought that liner that they use when building homes before they put on the siding. It got thrown away once I came home. Plus two one liter bottles for drinking. I also brought those lemonaid powers for my water bottles. Tastes like country time lemonaid but no sugar. A bear bag and cord with a good sized rock. And a few bic lighters. One for the stove one for my shirt pocket. And two towels one for cleaning me and the other for the messkits. And a bug net for my head. I think that's it. Pack loaded with food and water in the bladder cane out to 45 pounds.
14:46 Nice job removing that tree across the trail. Was that a Silky saw? I recently purchased the lightest Stihl folding saw. It's under 5 ounces and cuts like nobody's business! Not big enough for my hot tent stove, but it'll cut forearm sized wood, which is a good medium sized diameter for my Seek Outside hot tent stove. I see that you have another video up!😊
Always trust your gut. I've spent a lot of time in forests across the globe and have encountered many things that seem off. It is not worth it to ever second guess your observance. Sometimes, the body tells you to leave as the brain rationalizes its perception. Never let the brain rule over instinct. Just go. ❤
Beautiful place and vlog. In Bill Bryson's book- A Walk in the Woods, he walks the Appalachian Trail and mentions seeing a hiker ahead of him, who he could never catch up despite his best efforts. Spooky!
Hello from Northern California! TH-cam decided to send me your channel this morning! So happy to be here! We have the ‘Pacific Crest Trail’ running through my area here that many hike. It runs from Mexico to Canada some 2650 miles. Take care and safe travels.❤what size pill does one use for water purification? I wish to buy some to have on hand for emergencies. I see they come in 49mg. Is this for a small bottle maybe a liter of water or should one buy the higher mg. Tablet. Thank you ❤
So why not carry extra water? I mean theres roll wheel strollers lil where u can put some extra container of water? Maybe extra gallons ? Just suggestion
Despite the general consensus. I had plenty of water one hour into my day. As far as long-distance hiking is concerned, the idea is to have just enough to get one to the next water source since a liter of water weighs well over pounds. Wheels are not allowed on the Appalachian Trail or in designated wilderness areas. It sounds like a great idea in theory, but the AT is straight up, straight down all the way to Maine. A cart or wheeled vehicle would be more hurt than help. Thanks for your question.
I live and work on the Appalachian Trail and have hiked over 8,000 miles on it over the last 45 years. The AT is one of the SAFEST places in the lower 48. I'd be more concerned about the crazy people in the local Walmart parking lot. Thanks for watching and for your concern. It's genuinely appreciated.
Maybe I'm just old and not with it, but why would meeting another hiker on that trail freak anybody out? Seems to me there would be a lot of them out hiking and wanting to experience the same thing as this guy. Can't expect to have the whole trail to yourself. Now if it was a bear he was seeing and freaking out over, that I could understand perfectly.
Often near boulder fields, or places with nefarious names. One theory is that they are the feral, exiled ancestors of the giants that were hunted into extinction during a previous reset
@BrantHikes my daughter lives 2 miles from the Gap I walk the trails a lot and befriended a park ranger. He told me there are Big Foots and strange beings deep in the Hills. But the government silences them .. I 100% believe him
1:26 fae- a green one behind you almost on ground and a 6 foot centepede looking one a second before that green fae, Fae are generally plant based too so they are hard to detect, some are sprites, there are so many its absurd. Watch the green one move between frames there are 40-60 frames per second so we can slow them down this way. 10:19 massive being crawling up trees top screen almost center, few seconds before something jumps from a tree to ground to left. 13:27 very large tree all the way to right, there is a black humanoid trying to blend in eith the front. If you look at these time stamps stop the video on th time, goto highest resolution, use a big screen not a cell, zoom in almost all the way, then advance forward and backwards frame by frame slowly to you see what Im saying otherwise you will never see anything, you are bing followed by Fae, insectoids, Dogmen, and a few sasquatch, and some very white thin stick looking humanoids mainly in the trees that are difficult to see but as you advance look for movement. Otherwise they move too fast and we will never see them. this is an equilizer. 14:22 at a couple frames is a brown thing leaning off a maple next to your left ear, it moves and isnt a burl. These beings are everywhere, especially on the appl trail. They have abilities. Ive been examining 10s of 1000s of videos in 20 plus years and it takes pratice but you quickly learn what to look for and make startling discoveries. These beings outclass us in everyway. I dont care if Im not believed but this video is full of them, I just thought Id warn you. Thats as far as I go cause its a long long deep rabbit hole.
@@BrantHikes I live near Cherokee,NC,and I can't go anywhere without finding them. It's a vibration thing, more or less. Only seen them 8 times in about 4 years or less, but they talk to me every night near my home and nearly everywhere I go,even in suburbs of larger cities. It's not just about the Sasquatch, though;it's also about the changes taking place all over the Earth. Got audio recordings out the whazoo of all kinds of different stuff, but I don't use cameras or flashlights, and that changes the game to one of respect towards them. You mentioned the AT,and I spend a lot of time not far from there at night, outdoors, and "on my own".
@brotherlittlefoot2216 That's amazing! I've never had a sighting, although I'm always looking. My eyesight is also not the best. They must feel my respect for the forest because they've never made themselves known to me in over 45 years of spending days & nights at a time in the woods. Some may dismiss this as hippy-speak, but if I'm getting uneasy vibes, I move on to a place that feels 'right'. Magnetics, vibrations & harmony are far more important than many people realize. Thanks for taking the time to write back
@@BrantHikes They actually put off electromagnetic - or some other kind of energy. It's that strange sensation of being watched, but it's not just mental,it's physical 1st. I am friends with them everywhere I go. If you ever get that uneasy feeling in the forest, just touch your heart and say either in your head/heart or out loud,"I love the Earth;I love the trees, the rocks, the water, and the Peoples of the Forest, the Creator, and I mean no harm." You'll likely then feel an instance of relief which will equate to being yours and theirs,lol.... Just like us,they have family and territory to protect. once they know you mean no harm, they relent a little, and then you're on probation w them for the rest of your life in the forest, lol.

Ghost of missing hikers from the past!!! There are a lot of them!!!!
Loving your fall adventure, as opposed to watching thru hikers freeze in January, doing this section.
i had odd encounter while hiking boundary peak in nevada. i had seen a bright light on a mountain far a way from me...odd becuase there is nothing that should cause it out there. i kept climbing up boundary peak....dead tired....only person out there....then as im nearing the top i see a blonde haired woman at top....in pony tail...i saw no pack...and she looked very fresh...we waive at each other and she skips away. im confused , but am happy there is someone up there to take a summit pic of me...i get up there and she is no where to be seen......i was only person
Apparently, that sort of thing happens a lot. Spooky
@BrantHikes I wish I would of got the blonde lady....but only got the light on the other mountain on video th-cam.com/users/clipUgkx0vY6KAxMf6mzTGl76SwFVb4-LUFA5Ur5?si=GBX8sJETS5dWMDbx
@@thomasmontoya7279 That's a super bright light to be that noticeable in daylight
You ought to scope out tree line, tree tops see if any bugfoot tree crosses or signs??
Do you ever encounter those on your journeys?
I'm always looking for things out of the ordinary. After spending days or weeks in the woods, my eyes start to pick up on things that shouldn't be there.
I've seen the tree crosses before
he's probably freaked out about you too! lol, that would be me.
Hi there, I'm Lynne from Scotland . You cropped up on my feed through Celebrating Appalachia.so thought I'd join you virtually on your scenic hike.
I’d love to see the Scottish Highlands! They were part of the same mountain range as the Appalachian with the Atlas, as the central Pangean Mountain range, so technically we share the same mountains haha
Thanks Friend.
I really like your type videos, no crazy music, sounds of nature and foot steps😁 But it is very quiet...not even birds? Be safe!
Ola I love your videos
I've had something similar happen but on a street at night. The woman vanished, and there was absolutely nowhere she could of gone.
Thanks
I see that you have another video up!😊
@danielkutcher5704 Yes, Silky pocket boy curve 170mm
Those blown down trees sure looked clean sawed not blown and haphazard looking when naturally broke ?
Yes, the trail crew came in and sawed them after they blew down.
Spooky!
I had forgotten about that part of the book
I vividly remember that climb out of Tesnatee Gap! It royally kicked my rear end. I even had thoughts of quitting the trail after that one...lol
Tablet. Thank you ❤
Thanks for stopping by! I usually break my purification tablets in half. A drop of bleach will purify an entire gallon
I’d like to hike the app’trail but not alone, with several people would be ideal 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 it’s on my bucket list tho 😃
Come to Georgia in March. You definitely won't be alone!
Beautiful nature
@@BrantHikeswow! Thanks for explaining .. I understand now .
Love your yt channel! Keep up awesome shares❤
The Appalachian trail is the most dangerous in the U.S., not because of the trail itself, but because of people. Be careful out there.
I know exactly where youre at😅. Steep climb up wildcat but a great place at the gap for trail magic😊...easy hirch into either!
Does the Natchez Trace and the Appalachian trail come close to each other
They're pretty far apart
I really hate it when people don't film the strange encounters and just talk about them. How do we know it's even true?
We met the 3 Amish men on the Vermont border May 18 th ,!😮 Bacon Wrap
What strange encounters?
Dude probably turned or just stopped and waited for you to move on down the trail because he didn’t want to be invading your space.
WOW awesome video :)
♥️🙏♥️ saw your video I’m from Weslaco Texas maybe that was the spirit that you saw in the woods be careful out there take care🌲🌲🌲🌲👋🤠👨🏽🦼🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲
Dehydration is serious business.
Ghost hikers in the clouds
Maybe I'm just old and not with it, but why would meeting another hiker on that trail freak anybody out? Seems to me there would be a lot of them out hiking and wanting to experience the same thing as this guy. Can't expect to have the whole trail to yourself. Now if it was a bear he was seeing and freaking out over, that I could understand perfectly.
Bigfoot gets lonely too. They grab people regularly. And the people are rarely found. When they are found, they are missing their shoes. Or one shoe.
Often near boulder fields, or places with nefarious names. One theory is that they are the feral, exiled ancestors of the giants that were hunted into extinction during a previous reset
Man as old as those mountains are, there’s literally no telling
Crazy stuff been watching David paulides some places have those names for a reason thanks man@BrantHikes
Emitissimo, Great truth from you! I agree, well said by you! Seen 'em several times.
Don't do drugs
My brother lives off the trail in tn/ nc side. He will walk it a little distance.
Nice area.
R u at the Cumberland Gap?
The Appalachian Trail in Georgia
I've read about strange things occurring at Cumberland Gap
You need to read audio books , you’ve got a soothing voice.
Probably bad water.
Yea I woulnt trust can be poisoned by weird people
There's really more of a chance of municipal water being poisoned than a spring out in the middle of nowhere
The water was fine. I've drank bad water before, and that wasn't it.

My favorite side Trail & shelter in Georgia. Been there at least a dozen times
If you only knew how many Sasquatch were actually around you anywhere in the forest, lol.
Do you know how many? Now I'm curious. Please tell
