I don't think you need to put down one person just to prop the other. Cavill is easily better because he fits the character in a lot of ways and he is a real fan who understands what makes Bond work. Also, Johnson has done a lot of gritty independent movies - he is not likely the type of pretty boy you're envisioning.

No 1 is Sean Connery, no 3 is Roger Moore and no 5 is Pierce Brosnan. Pierce Brosnan almost got the James Bond role, but lost it due to his contract on Remington Steele. Henry Cavill lost James Bond role due to his not famous enough at the time, but then he got Superman and became sensational actor. So, it's an easy decision. Choose Henry Cavill. Regarding James Bond storyline, everytime there's a new Bond, there's always a new team assembled with different style of Bond movies.

To make it overly serious, will push some audience away. My wife refused to watch Craig as James Bond outside Casino Royale, even then she said Craig is not her choice as James Bond.
