Such a great game. Evergreen content, no invalidated progression, great story for an mmo, ways to explore and experience the world are far more extensive then most games period, deep customization of both appearance and build for the playable classes, and more. EOD is not the best expansion as a whole, but it is a solid extension of all the existing things that make GW2 such a special game. Highly recommend!

Good review Phil! I agree with most everything you said, it was even refreshing to hear you mention the challenges of navigating Kaineng. My hope is that they might add some additional ziplines to it, and perhaps show existing ones on the minimap to get around easier.
Just a balanced, researched, and seemingly unbiased review. I couldn’t have articulated this better myself even having played GW2 for nearly 10 years, and your compliments and gripes are pretty much universally shared by the player base. If you’re not a dedicated GW2 player, you did an astounding job researching!
GW2 is a great game with a great future. The player base has more than doubled over the last few years and they've already announced work on a new expansion due to the major success of End of Dragons. It really is one of the best times to jump into this world for those that have yet to do so.
Is it really worth to start a whole new MMORPG with a few expansions already released ? I have like 200h in Lost Ark, but the grind is getting boring already... I've played the hell out of GW1 and i've bought GW2 as well a long time ago, but i think it never grabbed me somehow. I guess i was too much into moba games back then. However, i liked the combat and how it played since it takes a different approach than your typical grindy MMO, and you can progress in alternative ways as well. I just don't know if it makes sense to jump in now being so many years behind in everything.
@@DoctorStrange01 in the current state, I'd say to you to jump in if you are into researching about the game (even if just a bit). After the leveling bit, the game opens up A LOT, and getting into what you want to do will be very confusing if not using external guides and talking to other players. The wiki, for example it's the best I've seen for any game out there.
Best mmo out there. The not vertical progression makes all the game relevant, more so when a new expansion launches and you can tackle previous content in a different way. And with the new expansion already announced, the news of the playerbase doubling in the last 3 years and the content thats coming next... Man, I've never been happier as a GW2 player. Great review, amazing game, best comunity.
This is a really well written review. This writer definitely did his research about the great aspects of EoD while also being able to bring up issues that the veteran players know.
Its amazing game i have been playing for last 9 years and i still have a lot of stuff to do new expansion is really cool and new direction so far looks promising.
I feel like this is a little harsh but I guess it's meant to be, it's a professional review from people who probably only play the game every now and then for reviews, so they can't go way off into the weeds with detail and a heartfelt review both for time limits and because they don't know that much about the game, ultimately. The only thing I suppose I actively disagree with is that the masteries here aren't game changing like mounts and gliding. First off, the Siege Turtle is a multiplayer combat mount, two major new breaks from existing mounts which already you acknowledged previously as something that seriously shakes up the game. So more of the "same" (its still a mount I mean, the actual function of it is radically different) but whether its an entirely new feature never touched before or an addition to a previous system because there's so much potential there doesn't change that it is a game changer just like the original mounts and gliding. Not to mention, fishing complete with a skiff system to compliment it?! THAT is undeniably game changing. ANYWHERE with water now has potential hours of both relaxing and intense frustrating fishing, depending on how you go about it. I feel my re-exploring old maps has been changed as drastically by skiffs and fishing as much as by gliding. Maybe mounts still have an edge though. Also I'll just throw this out there from a somewhat biased perspective, I fcking love this expansion so much. Most of the things (such as story) are being universally praised as the best so far, but I also LOVE the environments. Exploring, getting new maps, seeing new lore and new places is my favorite part and what keeps me playing most of all. I loved the previous expansions but I also find every single region of Cantha infinitely more exciting than desert or jungle. The soundtrack is utterly astounding and blows me away, which is really saying something because it was amazing previously
Complaining about verticality again? Ughhhh I remember the rage people had with HoTs. It’s like dude….. just wait til you learn the map and you don’t get lost anymore . Would you rather have a fun vertical jungle gym of a map months later that is fun to fly and glide thru or just have yet another flat city that was easy to navigate at first but later on is just whatever?
Great to see such a fair review of the game, neither too focused on flaws nor pretending there aren't any. I love this game and I'm optimistic about the future it provides, glad to see it get some coverage even though it usually falls under the radar. If you're reading this and you're on the fence about trying Guild Wars 2, I can only recommend it. The core game is free and even if you decide to get expansion content, it's pay once, play forever, with no subscription whatsoever.
Guild wars 2 is a great because I can stop playing to go play something else come back and feel like I didn't miss anything or have to work hard to catch up.
While it's not perfect, it is definitely a great game and has kept me coming back year after year. YOU DON'T NEED TO HAVE PLAYED GW1 TO GET IN ON GW2!!!
New Kaineng City is a beautiful map and I love just walking around there but I agree navigating to a specific area is a bit challenging. It already has helpful tools like the ziplines and teleporters but they aren't that usable because it's hard to tell where they go. Ziplines only show where they go when you get very close to them and teleporters only open up a text menu with locations availabe. Ziplines should have a faint outline of where they go at all times so I can tell from a distance if they are taking me where I need to go. Teleporters on the other hand should open up a map showing possible locations. With those improvements navigating the city would be way less annoying.
Verticality makes maps hard to navigate? Yes, but that's the magic of GW2, the maps of the game are just the best ones. If you stand that as a bad point, it's clear you love mediocrity
I really really like the expansion. The regions are good, however I dislike the big city because it's too big and empty and the DE area is literally nothing else than the DE area. I wouldn't go back to it. However visually I really enjoy the first part of the expension maps. Also the story final feels Really underwhelming, if you've done the DE meta
I was always attracted to MMORPGs and their core concept engulfed me every time, until I quit every single one of them after a 2-4 weeks of playing because I felt bored, overwhelmed, grinded to the bone or all at once. Until GW2 launch that is. 9 years and hoping for at least 9 more. Still a 10/10 game.
You need to get to level 80, and at that point you can start the End of Dragons story, which will get you to the new EoD maps pretty quickly. You'll be skipping a *lot* of story, though, so it's recommended to just play everything in order, maybe asking for a friend or someone to taxi you to one of the new EoD maps, so that you can play in them without needing to do the story (will still be some spoilers, since the maps take place in the same period as the story).
well done review 👍😊🙌 GW2 is the MMO that has significantly raised my personal expectations of other MMOs and my benchmark against which this genre as a whole has to be measured ..... and that's a very high hurdle, even if not everything is always only perfect with GW2 ..... for me, GW2 was the only reason why I finally treated myself to a modern and powerful gaming PC in 2021, no other game was worth it to me
I am sorry, buy from the meta, elite specialization, map design, etc, this expansion feels really half assed. Heart of Thorn is still the best expansion.
Only thing I love about GW2 that I wish other MMORPG game could be the same is, the gear progression. I'm still wearing full set ascended from 4 years ago, which work perfectly fine through every expansion. Compare to recent MMO I play like Lost Ark... So many content locked behind item level. Even my home, FFXIV, I still need to buy gear from market board for fast access to new content.

I am really not sold on this one, as someone who's been playing since 2012, there just doesn't seem to be enough here to keep me playing, add in the large amount of woke propaganda, and my wallet is sealed shut
I'll be 100% honest here. I have played around 7k hours over the past 9 years and I absolutely love the game. I loved HoT and PoF. even the LW maps. But I can't help but feel sad about EoD. Before launch, I was hyped. when it was announced, I flipped my table. CANTHA? heck yeah. But after seeing the first footage I was like ... meh. The coloration is just beyond fucked up for me. Too much saturation everywhere. Elite specs (except for thief) seem uninteresting to me. First map felt just like a checklist. second map was the best of the bunch, even though designing a city like that while skyscales a re a thing is questionable. 3rd map was a grey copy auric basin while I couldnt even bring myself to play the 4th. I have not touched the story, so I can not judge on that. I have spent about 15 hours doing stuff in EoD just to not return in like 3 weeks now. I see why many people hype this up and like it, but I just can't help but feel extremely disappointed. If I were to rank the expansions, EoD would 100% be the worst of the bunch. Soundtrack and fishing slaps though, so at least some things I can enjoy.
@@McMarc_1993 Feels a bit like a hot take. It sold better than than PoF, most people i know enjoy it and i personally think it is the best expansion launch of both HoT and PoF (also played since lauch and have about 6.5k hours). The Specs i have tried feel really good (Mechanist, bladesworn and Willbender) , PvE balance right now is excellent and frankly the maps have the same philosophy as HoT which had my favorite maps until now. Love the events and coming from Gw1 i really like their aethetics. You say echovald is "gray auric basin". Well i can actually see the old Canhan map in it. Especially in Arborstone. PoF was fine but never really had any reason to go back there besides the odd collection. EoD maps have good lore, good collections and very good metas. I do not feel the coloration is any different than the game was in general. It is a matter of taste but Gw2 always had very saturated colors anyway and the PP effects are all over the place.Maybe try without PP?
@@mormegil231 It's more the whole esthetic that buggs me out. I guess when I heard Cantha my expectations were too high to ever fulfill. I will give it more shots of course, I love the game and am always on the hunt for some more sweet AP, but for now, it just hasnt really gotten me. Havent touched the strikes yet, so maybe theres some cool stuff left for me.
So you haven't played the story, dismissed all of the elite specs bar one, and haven't tried Dragon's End at all? Without even injecting my own views or bias, it seems as though you haven't interfaced with 90% of what EoD even offers at launch in the first place. TBH considering your post, I don't understand what you've done in those 7k hours, no interest in elite specs rules out PvP, WvW, and Raids/Fractals, ignoring the story makes me assume you don't care about that, and ignoring the most trained/popular open world meta (Dragon's End) makes me think you don't frequent open world meta trains or anything. I'm just wondering, what do you look for in the first place from GW2? In terms of my bias, HoT was the most exciting launch for me by far, as elite specs, raids, gliding, and huge spike in overall difficulty made the game immensely more engaging, but I still view all 3 expansions as fairly equal in substance and quality (relative to how successful the game is at the time). EoD dropped with a solid set of base content and features, and I think what is more important than that is that it is an emblem of the renewed hope for the community that GW2 is going to grow and become bigger/better. For the last few years the community has been very doom and gloom, after Anet initially was going to move on to a different project, on top of corporate buy outs, devs laid off/leaving... people were expecting the end. EoD stands in defiance of that, especially with the early announcement of the next expac, along with clear and laid out plans for development of content for everyone (living world for casuals, CM strikes for sweaties, huge fixes for WvW and balancing for PvP). I think there is a small amount of hopium in the community's overwhelming positivity towards EoD, but there are certainly no shortcomings regarding this expansion either. If you've loved Guild Wars 2 over the past few years (meaning not much endgame content like fractals/raids/wvw balance), then EoD knocked it out of the park. And even if you are a sweaty endgamer, then hope is on the horizon as Alliances are finally coming to WvW, Strike CMs promise to be the new 'raid' content, and the already extremely frequent balance patches and promises of sweeping balance changes in the future will keep it all fresh and tight, especially compared to before.
You are not completely alone, I heard some - but very few - other voices. I enjoy the new expansion. Kept me busy for 6 weeks now and I am not even done yet. Both PoF and HoT didn't manage to keep me engaged for that long. I do get the issues you have with the aesthetics, as each of the new maps have a very unique feel and the Seitung map is definetelly trying to be very colorful. That just might not everyone's cup of tea. I can see where you get the similarities with auric basin for the third map - but to be honest, auric basin still is my favourite HoT map, so I don't even really mind. Still I think that echovald is probably my least favourite of the EoD maps (Arborstone is a great hub though!). As the video already stated, the last map is probably the most complex and demanding meta we have right now in the game - but at the same time a lot of fun. I didn't stress out too much about the turtle egg, and just when anet added a different way of aquiring it I also beat the meta for the first time. So if you enjoy doing meta events, this might actually be worth trying. While the story is solid, the story presentation is the best we ever had in GW2 in my opinion.
i enjoyed GW2 for a little while... once i max leveled i was done. The game is just too easy. When you can level from 1 to max without dying once then there is a problem if you ask me. also, the bloody loot nonsesne was too much. felt like a cheap phone game everytime I opened my bags.
I really just wish they'd make Guild Wars 3. Bring back some of the things from the first game that people loved with the things that worked in the second game.
No list of how this game has utterly failed. Good thing all these new playera cant see the internal struggles us players have fought for 10 years its bullshit
Oh man if only the game wasnt so incredibly ugly. Awful textures, empty worlds and lack of modern lighting/shadow effects makes the game so hard to look at. Even the cgi cutscenes look worse than most modern games
@@RedNuii the environment is way our dated. I honestly don't see how you can't see that. Sure artistically looks good, but polygon count is horrid, and AA issues.
For me GW2 is more like a Singleplayer RPG where you happen to see other players. You get the new expansion, play it and then people quit until next one comes out. Game has sadly no end-content. GW2 is simply not a MMORPG for me because 1st it does not meet the "massive" requirement due to its tiny playerbase and 2nd because group content it not relevant.
By "no end content" do you mean no brain numbing farming and grinding like the competition ? That's not content, that's you spending time and possibly money on a level of effort comparable to work without getting paid for it.
"no end content" lol. also the game does not die between expansions. I have played WoW, Elderscrolls, FF14 and Star Wars, all og those felt more single player to me.
What? You clearly dont Know what are you talking about. Gw2 is known for been massive in every game mode. It have a healthy amount of active players and now more than ever. Dont talk about thing you dont know.
I would argue the "massive" keyword fits guildwars better than ANY other MMO. Have you tried the 100v100v100 PvP mode, aka World vs World? Have you joined the 50+ open world meta events or World boss fights? You dont even need to party and group up to join those events, thats what a massive multiplayer world really should be. If you think playerbase is the one element that makes a game massive then all popular online games like, Apex, League, Fortnite and so on should include the keyword.
You do you buddy, but that seems like an odd rule. Guild Wars 2 is set on an Earth like planet, and like Earth, it has different continents that are analogous to different cultures. Earth has Europe on one side of the world and Asia on the other, just as Guild Wars 2 has Tyria (Europe analogue) as well as Cantha (Asian), not to mention Elona (Africa/Middle East) too... what about that makes you want to write the game off?
Everything matters because it has no vertical progression at all. If I have a job and get a 5% raise and inflation is 5% I've gone nowhere. Vertical progression makes numbers go up endlessly but your opponents go up endlessly too. In Guild Wars 2 you have skill progression not stat progression. Why would anyone want to be a coatrack for greatness?
I gotta say this expansion was incredibly boring. GW2 still lacks any reason to stay once the story is done. Even then this time the story was even worse

Soundtrack and fishing slaps though, so at least some things I can enjoy.
wonder if this is a hot take? I've seen so much positive talks about it, but surely I can't be alone feeling that way ... right!?
A review with only trailer footage!? Did you even play it?
PCGaming is still going??
wait more than 7 years for a new content, it does not give good signs for the future
Where did you get 7 years from?
i enjoyed GW2 for a little while... once i max leveled i was done. The game is just too easy. When you can level from 1 to max without dying once then there is a problem if you ask me. also, the bloody loot nonsesne was too much. felt like a cheap phone game everytime I opened my bags.
PvE is pretty easy, but have you tried WvW? It's not everyone's favorite game mode, but that is where most of the challenge and fun is for me.
I really just wish they'd make Guild Wars 3. Bring back some of the things from the first game that people loved with the things that worked in the second game.
No list of how this game has utterly failed. Good thing all these new playera cant see the internal struggles us players have fought for 10 years its bullshit
Is it just me or is the graphics ugly as hell?
Wish I could like this game. I find its world and gfx off putting. :/
If you like gay stories, this is the xpac for you.
First? 😹😹
1st to commnet Bruh! I been waiting years for that 1st... YEARS i tell you
Oh man if only the game wasnt so incredibly ugly. Awful textures, empty worlds and lack of modern lighting/shadow effects makes the game so hard to look at. Even the cgi cutscenes look worse than most modern games
"empty worlds". How? I see people in whatever map I go to.
Lay off the drugs
i completely disagree the story of gw2 is hot trash there so much wrong with it it not even funny
Overhyped expansion. Glad people enjoy it; i just cant; farewall Gw2
Too out dated... needs new engine
He literally said in the video that it’s undergoing a transition to DX11. Likely to finish its beta soon
@@RedNuii dx11 won't fix the outdated graphics
@@Hi11Zones Im not sure what you mean by outdated graphics. The game looks really good, better than all the other MMO except maybe BDO.
@@RedNuii the environment is way our dated. I honestly don't see how you can't see that. Sure artistically looks good, but polygon count is horrid, and AA issues.
@@Hi11Zones Never had many issues, and most definitely not in any of the expansion zones. Maybe the core maps but not the new content.
Still would rather play gw1
are you playing gw1 tho
The game's still there, have fun! :D
Gw1 is a bad joke compared to GW2
@@ROCKNROLL947 GW1 is a fine game, it's just different from GW2

Love GW2, but not so comfortable mixing European medieval environment, with orient. I will pass.
Cantha was an established thing since original GW :)
@@invidia9222 Paaass!
May I ask why?
You do you buddy, but that seems like an odd rule. Guild Wars 2 is set on an Earth like planet, and like Earth, it has different continents that are analogous to different cultures. Earth has Europe on one side of the world and Asia on the other, just as Guild Wars 2 has Tyria (Europe analogue) as well as Cantha (Asian), not to mention Elona (Africa/Middle East) too... what about that makes you want to write the game off?
no offense but thats the dumbest reason ive ever heard about someone not wanting to play a video game
How come no one mentions that half the gw2 community is woke activist LGBT or both?
Where is this woke activism you speak of? Must have missed it

The most boring MMO of them all. No vertical progression at all, nothing matters.
Vertical progression is where nothing matters. You must be new to MMOs. Horizontal is where literally everything matters.
Yet the only MMO that actually feels like u playing MMO xD
"nothing matters"... *Looks at every single piece of content/expansion added to WoW over the past 16 years barring the most recent patch*
Hmm.....
I don't like to get milked with vertical progression like wow so they force me to pay & keep me busy with new gear over & over again
"the strongest gw2 has delivered yet" did you play while you were high?
I gotta say this expansion was incredibly boring. GW2 still lacks any reason to stay once the story is done. Even then this time the story was even worse
