More and more people are requesting ANBERNIC to release a plastic version of the RG405M, I see it in the comments every time. I don't think we will have to wait too long before an RG405P is released by ANBERNIC!
At this point, an rg406p seems far more likely than them returning to the t618 chipset.
I just hope the 406p is small, I don't need a retroid sized brick, i want something that can emulate some ps2 and fits in my pocket, not a bag, a pocket @@ColinRowlands
Wow your review is very detailed, subscribed!
I've had mine since it's release I'm glad I got it and will buy the next iteration.
Very detailed review, and pointing out a lot of things that other reviewers do not such as the stick snapping, and screen bright spots. You’ve earned a subscriber!
I just ordered one today, this will be my first emulation handheld after considering getting into the hobby for years. Hopefully they don’t release a new version anytime soon.. 😬
Picked up an RG405V from the Droix sale as I love the form factor and wanted the bigger battery capacity. You’re so right about the 480p 4:3 aspect ratio and the 4” screen size offers just a bit more flexibility, but the 405m was just a bit too expensive and heavy for me. The more modern system are on the Steam Deck so the T618 has more than enough power. GammaOS is incredible and the whole experience is perfect for me.
I love mine. The battery life and the metal shell makes it feel like a premium piece of retro hardware. It fits into my pocket and just feels premium. I have my PC if I want to play more graphically demanding games.
I'm glad you love it! I keep picking mine up for some suikoden!
Yes. I have a 556, several 353s, Arc and the RG405M is by far my favourite. Pocketable and powerful enough for most things. Some Android games have issues with the aspect ratio of the screen, but so far... it is a blast to take!
I played through (nearly) God Of War 1 for PS2 on the RG405M and absolutely loved it. I still prefer the Retroid Pocket 3+ and now 4 overall, but I think for people who want something that feels great an more compact this is still worth it. Also, I think metal devices make great gifts...
Yeah, I'd really like to see a clear plastic (in various colors) of this one, maybe updated like a 405M Plus! Something to compete with the RP4P a bit more directly. I'd buy one! Love the video, friend! 💚
I do wonder what the next evolution of something like this would be. As we get more powerful, active cooling is necessary it seems, which bulks up the size
@@RetroBreezeYT Oh, definitely! It makes me wonder when we're going to get those fancy Frore AirJet coolers in handhelds or even laptops. They'd be perfect!
Love your content
Thank you!
I want a RG405W (wide) in plastic with 4"-4.5" 3:2 aspect ratio screen. I'll be first in line for pre-ordered 😊
Definitely want more 3:2 devices! I still return to my RGB10 Pro often!
Good review. I think this is a good portable option if you also have an Odin 2 and/or steam deck. I decided to play anything N64 and below on here.
Odin 2 will be above that
Steam deck will be xbox360 and PC
how’s GBA on a 4:3?
Just got one for as low as $45 dollars! I bought it at the swap meet. Definitely recommend the anbernic rg405m!
Fantastic deal! Congratulations!
I've loved this, and its vertical cousin, the 405v, since buying them. I like the design, the feel in my hands, everything. I've gotten used to the stock firmware, it's really not that bad when you use it day to day. I'm sure Gamma OS is fine, but being a Linux user, installing it is not possible (it's a Windows based installation for those that don't know it).
My pet peeve about the retro handheld community is that whenever a new device comes out, any device seemingly, the previous darling is all of a sudden "not good enough" anymore. Like all of a sudden, they stop working or can no longer handle the games they surprisingly could handle with ease just a few short months ago....it's really pathetic in my view. The best thing about this industry is they churn out new devices almost weekly of late and that makes devices like the 405 series better value as the price drops on them. It doesn't make them less useable, but it sure does make them more affordable and that's a win for us all! Great re-review, you've earnt a new subscriber here.
Would playing in a car be fine with the screen brightness all the way up?
I would love to see a video on the RG556.
I hope to get one too! Even just for the OLED!
Is there a 4:3 android handeld with a better soc for ps2/gc emulation? i like the retroid pocket 4 pro but i dont want a 16:9 screen as I hate black bars on the sides. the RG405M would be perfect for me if it had more power and maybe a 4.5" oder 5" display.
Awesome review!!! I love my RG405M. With GammaOS its almost perfect!! I can't wait for the RG556 to come out
待っていた!素敵な動画ですね
ありがとうございます!
I love the size of this device I just wish it had performance atleast similarly to the retroid pocket 4 pro for some ps2 emulations
Hopefully there will be another powerful handheld with a 4:3 screen soon!
I'm more surprised no one has made plastic shell for it like they have done for button replacements
I guess there's a lot of design work and measuring to go into it. Also no telling what could happen to the thermals, etc. I also think that most people don't want to do a screen removal!
Can you tell us what Games play great for GameCube? Sonic battle 2 Luigi’s mansion Zelda windwaker Metroid prime etc?
I’ll be soooo mad if they don’t update the 406M with 4:3 aspect ratio. I heard about the 405M too late in the game. I want pocket N64 and dreamcast /GameCube and that’s the best aspect ratio for it. The screen looks amazing those games. But it’s an older device at this point.. so I hope they decide to update it, but what Chip could be used? It just needs to play GameCube and PS2 and it’s perfect to compete the 4:3 retro game emulation. If they keep the metal and 4:3 aspect, and hopefully add hdmi or usbc video out i’m all in.
what about key mapping in gamma os ?
10:26 - God of War: Chains of Amogus. A classic.
I'm still trying to decide between this, the rg505 and retroid pocket 4 but I'm leaning heavy towards the rg405m
I had the same 3 way toss up and settled on the RG405M. Once I learn the system and how to operate an emulator a bit better I think I'll spring for the retroid 4.
@flefly I love my rg405m. I'm not a big gamer but love being in my handheld
08:48 -- So, after watching your video, I went to check on my RG405-M, & sure as shit, mine's also got a slightly bright(er) spot on the same spot of the screen. Perhaps you're onto something suggesting an internal electronic component is pressing on the back side of the screen. If you do a tear down I'll be sure to watch.
Shame to hear yours has one too 😞
I prefer my Retroid 3 + Metal edition, just a nicer screen and colourway with better hell effect analog sticks. My second choice, would be the RG405M or the Retroid 2s Metal edition.
COLD HANDHELD? HELL YESS
I also have white spot on screen in same place . This irritates me a little, but to find out what is pressing on the screen, you need to peel it off. I won’t do this because I’m afraid of damaging the screen.
Yeah same here. Couldn't bring myself to open it!
I think it's just a bad LED I have it also
I do not get why people request plastic handhelds. They look and feel so cheap.
I'm planning on buying one of these by the end of the year. I hope that during the year Anbernic releases an RG405P; plastic case, D-Pad/stick positions swapped and slightly cheaper.
How does it compare to the 505 I know the 505 has a bigger screen does it have the same chip set
Yeah it has the same Unisoc T618 chip as the RG405M.
is this console still good if i buy it just to play some premium pixel games on android? or is it better for me to wait for RG Cube?
Personally I would go for a wide-screen device like the 556, RP4, etc. Android games often don't scale well to the square or 4:3 screens
Just picked up a Retroid Pocket 3+ and an Anbernic 405m. 3+ for streaming/Android games, and 405m for retro pre-PS2/GC gaming.
Getting my game on! 😊
Great combo!
This doesn't play PS2 well.
How did you put Smash Remix on the emulator?
Just build it using the steps on the site then copy it to the device. I used the M64Plus Z emulator
HDMI out and Bluetooth for controllers? Please tell me it does and is it really worth to buy
Yes for Bluetooth, no for hdmi
I dont own one, but damn is that design sleek and sexy!
I just wish it had video out
Oh yeah, good point!
To this day this is the most powerful handheld with a 4in 4:3 screen. I really think Ambernic hit it out of the park with this thing because most games your going to play on this are 4:3 anyway and I really wish they would update the internals with maybe a 720p 4:3 screen.
I agree, but I think the compact size and overall design are just so good, even without the metal shell. I'd really love to see a 405P!
@@RetroBreezeYT same, I think this thing in plastic would be perfect to cut down on some of the weight because it is pretty heavy.
I highly doubt a 960 x 720 LCD screen is a readily available component. Would likely need to be manufactured specific for the device, and that would make it massively expensive.
Powkiddy found a 4in 720p screen and they sell their rgb30 handheld for $90.
@@turnbasedtoddy7664 that’s a 720 x 720 (1:1) display. Good luck playing 4:3 content on that at 720p.
I wish it had the pad above the joystick
I think a lot of people feel the same!
The 450m is damn good. I skip with this device the Retroit Pocket 4 Pro and RG556 cycle. the 450 eats everything up to dreamcast and on top most with upscaling. but be aware! you have to tinker with the 450m in GammaOS. besides the R2 and L2 are downright useless. stuck easely in the shell by long button press like in racing games. its a bad design choice compare to the 351m. they stick to close together. the screen is "okay" but not great. a little to big for 640 * 480 resolutions. overall, its a very solid device. not perfect but close.
Personally I just say wait for the RG406M instead. 😕
I’ve been debating if it comes out in metal again. They would have sold a lot more in plastic if not for the price alone. Also would be more competitive at a lower price
There still not thing quite like interm of look and perform of rg405m. I still think this sell well. No reason for a 406m
It sure looks premium
Love my 405m but the triggers were fucked after a month unfortunately.
try to loose the 2 upper srews on the back a bit. this solution helps me. fingers crossed 🤞😎
@@Kasmodiah1 okay I'll give a try.
$250 for this device with the RP4 pro around?
Lots of differentiating factors besides the performance! Not to mention that it's available for a much lower price than $250!
ONE HELL OF A CONSOLE EVEN IN 2024 ....👍👍👍👍👍👍
Can it run wii game perfectly?
Nowhere near capable of Wii
@@RetroBreezeYT why wii is so tough to run? Ps2 is same generation as wii and more graphics
It's weird you saying "it's still powerful to this day" like it's a ten year old console or something. It was JUST a year old when you made this video. Are people's attention spans this short now?
I love the look of this one but the quality control seems atrocious. Screens falling out etc. I wouldn’t buy anything more expensive than the RG35XX from this company.
my dislikes:
- stock OS
- sound
- start and select button they feel and sound horribly cheap
- the analog sticks are really bad for ego/3d person shooter, basicly switch sticks
Agreed on all counts!
250? Geez. The official site and amazon sells it cheaper and brand new
i got mine for 180 and it works fine
10:25 AMOGUS ???????????????,,
WiSh the display was more sharper
The display is perfectly sharp on this one!
TWO FITTY? Hell naaaah
On the high end. Like I say, you can get it for far less, especially second hand.
