    *Update on the FIT file export. It CAN be done from the Active app. (woohoo!). Active app -> Results (or previous activity list) -> Open activity -> Top right three dots ... -> Export FIT file. I think I fat fingered the button and it went into rename activity mode.

    Personally, I'm a big fan of Bryton GPS units - I have two, a 420 and a 750, and in over 10000km combined riding between the two of them I've had exactly zero issues with either, or with the app. That being said, I'm not a power user (literally, I have no power meter, nor do I have electronic shifting or any other fancy sensors) and I could certainly see based on this video why people who are might want to look elsewhere. However, for the price point I got my 750 at (considerably cheaper than a comparable Garmin here in China) I am not going to complain in the slightest. Everything that I need to work for me works for me perfectly well. If I hadn't recently purchased the 750 I probably would have bought this S500.

      Under the hood (FIT file format, sensor support, etc), Garmin set the benchmark very high. It's not a secret though. They could all simply duplicate how well Garmin do FIT file data.

    I've gone from a Bryton 420 to the Garmin 530, and I don't regret it one single bit. Yes the battery life is a bit shorter, but not so short I have to charge it every time I ride. But the rest of the functionality is just another level. And don't get me started about the Bryton "active" app. That's a hot piece of steaming 💩

    • @WayChuangAng

      haha.... I feel you. I own Bryton rider 410 and my experience with their bryton active app is dismal. They can't even get bluetooth sync working correctly most of the time. Recent app updates actually mitigate the issue, but still it doesn't work some of the time. It's an improvement, but after trying for so many years, I just lost hope with Bryton. I stick to using USB to transfer the data when Bluetooth sync fails. It's frustrating to see this basic functionality like this not working properly.

    Honest review... fully agree. I have owned Bryton Aero 60 - then I got new bike with cheapest Garmin 130... and it was much better than Bryton. App on phone better, functionality better, Strava segments, notifications, alerts, extra apps. In this moment I offered Bryton for free to my family member - and jumped to Garmin 530. And - so far - not missing Bryton... But - if they would fix what mentioned - it could be a good computer....

    Your musings on pricepoint are basically where I was at a few years back; I could grab a Lezyne Mega XL for less than $200AUD, or a Wahoo or Garmin for around $500AUD. I was watching workmates struggle with getting their Garmin units to sync with their phones, and decided to take a punt on the Lezyne. I've been very happy with the battery life, ease of use, and even their customer support - if I was any sort of power user I suspect it might come up short on features, but it's been reliable for me.
    If this Lezyne packed it in tomorrow, I'm not sure what I'd get to replace it; margins have got to be negligible for the smaller players, and Lezyne haven't released a new model since bought mine, or a firmware update in roughly a year. I still don't have anything more than a couple of bikes and a couple of cadence and speeds sensors, so would I bother spending big on an overkill unit? Or aim for something from one of these smaller fish, at a much lower price point? Hrm.

  • @brent4adv

    I talk to my bike computer all the time but not in the way Bryton has imagined with their feature. I'm usually cursing my computer for telling me that my HR is too high and my power is too low when I'm getting dropped. Eh well.

  • @mlegrand
    @mlegrand 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Shane, some of us want inflated power meter numbers. That's what we call a feature. My gut feeling is that Bryton needs to really invest in some knowledgable user testing. Maybe correct a bunch of error message that don't quite read like there's a full understanding of english. I don't think mine came with that extra Garmin mount switch. That's nice. I do think it's impressive how many features Bryton has been able to develop while keeping the price point low. But now with that slight price bump, it puts the s500 up against some serious competition. I'm currently still recommending the Garmin 530 for people I don't know and maybe the Wahoo Bolt if I know a user can get away with it. I've also been wondering when and what Garmin might do next. If a future 540 is still around $300 it might really change the landscape of the market but who knows. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    I use a 450 and agree with the issues and a shame to see things that are not fixed in future models :-( One positive - I use the 450 on my mtb at night (no navigation needed or power data) and it's cheaper price (i paid less than £100) and long long battery life means it is not so much of an issue if I crash and break it and I can permanently keep the screen backlight on. Something about its old skool screen style I like in this situation. But it in no way compares to my old Garmin 810, especially the Connect app as mentioned. Thanks for the S500 review.

    • @gplama

      Thanks for the feedback. This scenario is where Bryton could really double down on and target their GPS units. Competing head to head with Garmin, Wahoo, and now Hammerhead at the real 'premium' level is always going to be tough. If they stepped back a little and refocused on the budget or mid-budget level, really nailed all the features (and standards of FIT file format/data), I think they'd be better received.

  • @sand9577
    @sand9577 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I have the Garmin Edge 530 and there's simply no contest...Connect IQ alone makes any Garmin device stand above other GPS computers. If it's not built-in, someone at Connect IQ has made it; barring that, you can add that functionality yourself. I also considered getting a Wahoo, but for the functionality and lack of bundles, any Wahoo is horribly overpriced. "Wahoo is simpler" well then, don't charge the same as the equivalent Garmin device that has WAY more functionality and BUNDLED sensors.
    I've been using my Edge for two months now...no issues whatsoever, I've tried almost all the features and they work exactly as intended, the mapping functionality works great; with a caveat, as long as you have your courses planned out the Edge 530 mapping will get you there, but if there's a change of plans that's when you hit a wall, that model just doesn't allow mapping on the go as easily.
    Long story short, if you can afford a Garmin GPS, go for the Garmin, everything else just...doesn't compete.

    • @gplama
      @gplama  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nailed it. 100%. ConnectIQ is massively underrated. Following the Bryton product trajectory, how many years would we predict it'd take for them to reach a point where they have an 'app store' and support a developer network? If this isn't in their long term plans then they at least need to get the BASICS sorted. The FIT file sensor IDs/activity type setting/watts issue/etc are things that shouldn't be a problem in 2022. Yet... here we are.

    The one thing i seem to like about this unit is no wifi, using Bluetooth instead. I think that's where the K2 drops the ball. If I am about to join a group ride and forget to download the route, I now need to connect my K2 to my hotspot and download. If I could go into say an app and download the route to the app which then will send to the unit. I think that process it just easier and faster in my opinion.

    Also, what was going on with the Karoo 2 GPS plot? Is that a recent bug? That's been one of the few things that hasn't been poor (that I was aware of) thus far. Since the SRAM takeover they did issue a patch which seems to have fixed the majority of sensor dropouts, which is auspicious.

There's only so many hours in a day to get frustrated with tech and handball shitton of free product feedback, and end up with videos that have low views and poor TH-cam revenue. Unfortunately for Bryton this week was a slow week, and I wanted to cover a few things about the S500 that hadn't been picked up in other reviews.

    I own a rider 750. It works well but i very much hate the byrton active app. The piece of shit is very sluggish and takes so long to respond i wonder whether im back on a 2010 smart phone. But thankfully, the Rider 750 has Wifi and I don't need to use the Bryton app at all. Anyway, next time im shopping for a bike computer, Garmin all the way.

    The 750 GPS sucks. The logging is ok. Next bike cpu will be a Garmin or Wahoo

      my question was which protocol is causing the sticky watts, BT or ANT+ or both? and in my original comment i wrote that the gps's track is far from superior (i have WT rider friend who is using it a while), but better than previous Bryton's tracks. I'm waiting for Edge 840 with dual-band and multignss, the Epix2 and F7 Sapphires tracks are very promising/superior with running or walking , so on bike it would be almost perfect (as my Xiaomi MI8 dualband tracks in my jersey backpocket )

      @@gplama yeah, the sticky watts are exist in my WT friend's logs also, i checked it now (they are using Shimano pm as i know , but dont know the protocol, but i assume ANT+ has higher priority when the user is pairing it, luckily i never had Brytons :D)

    I will never buy another Bryton product. I bought a Bryton Rider 750 which I really like but the battery failed after 4 months. They replaced it but it took over a month. The second one’s battery failed after 7 months and over 2 months later I have given up hope that they are going to replace it. Their customer service is terrible, so I recommend that you stay away from all Bryton products.
